November 22nd 1926 saw the publication of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle by Hugh MacDiarmid, one of Scotland's Greatest Twentieth Century poets.
I've lost count of the amount of times I have tried to fight my way through this poem, but I have no patience with it's rambling long verses, it's bloody 2685 lines long!!! The principal aim of the poem is to grapple with 'this root-hewn Scottis soul' and to analyse the nation of Scotland. I've said before here that I like my poems short, give me MacDiarmid's The Little White Rose any day of the week....
The rose of all the world is not for me.
I want for my part
Only the little white rose of Scotland
That smells sharp and sweet—and breaks the heart.
But this post is about the one described as his masterpiece, I wonder what Burns would have thought of it, I suspect he would have approved of the words, but the length, am no too sure. I'd rather grab the offerings that stand out in the poem, highlighted by others who have endeavoured to make it through "A drunk man", better men than me, at least I can say I have read wee bits of it, thanks to these folk.
Hugh MacDiarmid (a pen-name adopted by Christopher Murray Grieve) almost single-handedly forged a Scottish Renaissance movement that severed the nation's literary ties with the folksy sentimentality of the 19th century and dragged it into the European mainstream. MacDiarmid chose to write in Scots rather than Gaelic, but saw that it was necessary to improve the capabilities of the language by reviving old Scots words and borrowing freely from Gaelic and other sources. Thus he created a synthetic Scots, later sometimes known as 'Lallans'.
Critics continue to debate the dominant themes in MacDiarmid's poetry and rake through the embers of this awkward genius's life. Perhaps he is best summed up in his own words from A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle: 'I'll hae nae hauf-way hoose, but aye be whaur Extremes meet.'
I'll leave you with a few lines of the poem and links to more of it, the Youtube link tells the story how long it is with the time it takes for the man to recite it. two and a half hours! The words in these four lines say it all for me "It's gey and hard wark!..."

The adventures of two amiably aimless metal-head friends, Wayne and Garth. From Wayne’s basement, the pair broadcast a talk-show called “Wayne’s World” on local public access television. The show comes to the attention of a sleazy network executive who wants to produce a big-budget version of “Wayne’s World”—and he also wants Wayne’s girlfriend, a rock singer named Cassandra. Wayne and Garth have to battle the executive not only to save their show, but also Cassandra. Credits: TheMovieDb. "Yeah, that first period, I didn't really feel myself for whatever reason. It just felt like I wasn't really on it. After that first period, I got back into the locker room here. Scotty Murray, the goalie coach, came up and talked to me. He just said, 'You've got 23 guys here that love you.' You know. And I thought, you know, thinking about my dad in the stands, too.
"You know, there’s so many things like where it gets down to it. When you don't feel good, you've just got to find ways to just persevere and battle through it, and certainly it felt like I did that tonight. But more importantly, the whole team did that tonight."
The Caps are made of love and dads, basically.

Stranger Things Characters as Star Trek characters because Why Not and Fuck You:
Dustin - Nog (DS9) Smart and annoying, just a goof. Honorable Mention: Chekov (TOS).
Will - Wesley (TNG) DOn't start hating now, Wesley is smart and genuinely kind. Honorable mention, maybe Rom (DS9) for being such a sweetie. Will has Data potential but humorously I think Data is more extroverted.
Mike - Worf (TNG/DS9) A little stubborn and blunt, good hearted. Mike almost got the Wesley title for being whiny and smart but I wanted to highlight his inner romantic more.
Lucas - Scotty! (TOS) The perfect blend of practical, dedicated, and intense: with a fun loving side. Honorable mention: Odo (DS9) for grumpy pragmatism and a hidden simp.
El - Lal (TNG) Intelligent, compassionate, not quite normal. A litttle teeny bit of Troi in the 'mind powers, good taste in sweets, and sometimes the unfortunate plot ragdoll' department.
Erica - 50/50 Moogie (DS9) and Guinan (TNG) for independant, witty, old soul and gives no fucks. Boss bitches all around, plus Moogie has good fashion sense I think Erica would admire, and she doesn't take no for an answer.
Max - Tasha Yar (TNG) Hard exterior, soft interior. Been though a LOT. Has difficulty accepting love.
Billy - Don't care + L + ratio + Dukat + Brunt + those people who tried to say Data wasn't human + Lore for being a moody cunt with daddy issues.
Robin - Bashir (DS9) Chatty, neurotic, and gay. Also winner of the Lt. Barclay award for being bitchless. Sorry queen.
Steve - 50/50 Riker and O'Brien (TNG) for dad energy, fuckability and sheer Put In Situations syndrome. Also, I've never seen Star Trek: Enterprise but I think a lot of characters have his vibe. Sprinkle of Kirk (TOS) for Gets Beat Up And Looks Hot.
Nancy - Major Kira (DS9) Vengeful, tactical, occasionally flirtatious. Can't seem to get her romantic shit together. TF are you getting massages from O'Brien for? Would probably make out with her own clone.
Joyce Byers - Dr. Crusher (TNG) for being a concerned, yet capable milf. Honorable Mention: Dax (DS9)and no it's not because she's hot it's also because of her youthful energy, her directness, and ALSO she's hot.
Hopper - It's giving 50/50 O'Brien and Sisko (DS9) for Badass Dad Who Throws Punches and Is Inconvenienced.
Eddie - This one was a tough one because I needed someone who can be very big personality yet also very scared and vulnerable. Bashir has the right geekiness, but no (genuine) badassery. Hilariously I think Quark embodies some Eddie energy, and he also fucks, but he doesn't have Eddie's soul and Quark is certifiably a middle aged dude without a youthful vibe. One could say Q, but even in distress Q keeps his cool more. Somebody help me out, maybe there's a Voyager character for this. Maybe an Enterprise person I can't think of.
Chrissy - Leeta (DS9) Beautiful, genuinely sweet.
Murray Bauman - Probably McCoy (TOS but! It's also giving the quirkiness of the Doctor (VOY) with like some distinct Odo (DS9) in the Stop Fucking Around And Be Serious About This Because I'm Paranoid department.
Anyway my biggest lesson from this was that very few Stranger Things characters have the dignity of Star Trek characters. There are no Picards here.

NBA Contract Extensions: Rockets' Jalen Green Signs 3-Year, $106M Deal; Pelicans' Trey Murphy Secures 4-Year, $112M Extension
NBA Contract Extensions: Rockets' Jalen Green Signs 3-Year, $106M Deal; Pelicans' Trey Murphy Secures 4-Year, $112M Extension Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green has officially agreed to a three-year, $106 million contract extension, as confirmed by CBS Sports NBA insider Bill Reiter on Monday. The deal includes a player option for the third year. Green, 22, becomes the third player eligible for a rookie-scale extension to accept a non-max deal this offseason. Earlier on Monday, Trey Murphy III of the New Orleans Pelicans also finalized a four-year, $112 million extension. This follows a similar deal made by Moses Moody of the Golden State Warriors on Sunday. Prior to these agreements, notable players like Scottie Barnes (Toronto Raptors), Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), Evan Mobley (Cleveland Cavaliers), and Franz Wagner (Orlando Magic) had signed max contracts. Jalen Green's Performance and Future Potential The deadline for rookie extensions was set for Monday at 5 p.m. ET. At his peak, Green has shown signs of stardom, averaging 29.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists during a 15-game stretch last season. However, his overall performance has been inconsistent, with averages dropping to 16.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists in his last nine games. Green's contract reflects the disparity between his potential and current production. While the Rockets are committing to him, it is not at the same level as the commitments made to players like Barnes and Cunningham. By opting for a shorter deal, Green is betting on his ability to improve, potentially positioning himself for a max contract after the 2026-27 season. Trey Murphy's Extension with the Pelicans Meanwhile, Murphy's four-year, $112 million contract with the Pelicans is without options, according to reports from ESPN. Last season, Murphy had a slow start due to a knee injury but averaged 18.1 points on an impressive 66.1% true shooting, along with 6.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in the final 24 games. His three-point shooting during that stretch was notable, hitting 41.7% of his attempts on nearly 9 shots per game. As the Pelicans navigate their roster, Murphy's role may evolve, especially after the team traded for Dejounte Murray while retaining Brandon Ingram. Murphy, who operated as the team's sixth man last season, is expected to take on a more significant role despite currently dealing with a hamstring strain that may sideline him at the start of the 2024-25 season. Warriors Extend Moody, Kuminga's Future Uncertain Moses Moody has signed a three-year, $39 million extension with the Golden State Warriors, a deal viewed as favorable for the team. Moody has shown productivity, but his position in the rotation remains uncertain with the Warriors’ deep roster. Coach Steve Kerr praised Moody's recent performance, noting his improved confidence and skill development. In contrast, the Warriors have reportedly decided not to extend Jonathan Kuminga. Despite Golden State's offer of around $30 million annually, Kuminga opted to bet on himself, aiming to showcase his potential as a star player. Drafted seventh overall in 2021, Kuminga had a breakout season but has yet to solidify his role alongside established players like Draymond Green. As contracts are finalized and players navigate their careers, the landscape of the NBA continues to shift, with these extensions setting the stage for exciting developments in the upcoming season.
