✩🪐✨Book Box:
I know I am so late posting this, but I got my first ever Illumicrate book only box in April and I just HAD to share this photograph of their special edition of “Some Desperate Glory” with you!
I am obsessed with the hidden quote underneath the dust jacket and the foil embossing on the hardback. Not pictured is the endpaper artwork done by @carlydraws.illustration, but you’ll have to trust me when I say that it is out of this world! I love that there is a different design on the front and the back! I am so excited to read this one at @booksdogsandcoffee91’s recommendation!
The book at a glance:
✨ Standalone science fiction novel debut
✨ Diverse, complex, queer identities
Please check the content warnings before reading!

Great video discussing the ‘cashtronauts’
btw the katy perry/bezos' girlfriend/other four irrelevant billionaires 10 minute space stunt was not the first all female expedition no matter how much they try to market it as such. the first all female mission was in 1963 with soviet cosmonauts Valentina Tereshkova, Irina Solovyova and Valentina Ponomaryova - all three of which were working class and had to pass incredibly hard exams to be chosen from 400 potential candidates. just in case we started falling for the propaganda machine again
#space#recommend watching. also highlights how yes one of the people who went was a NASA engineer#now she seems to be running a kind of scammy science toy subscription box thing#at the end of the day reguardless of background this was a Publicity Stunt for one of the richest men on earth#AND for the women involved who are choosing to align themselves with him#everything they said about their ‘trip’ reads like a paid review so that other rich people will want to go#they’re not even a flight crew!!! none of them flew or controlled anything!#completely disgusting.

What are the yanderes' ideal date nights? Who enjoys classic candlelight dinners/movie nights and who enjoys going to an escape room, aquarium/zoo, arcade, etc.?
On that subject, being with Ata would lead to disastrous gift shop visits; I wouldn't be able to stop myself from getting every plushie and cool rock and she'd just enable me.
I have been researching for this all DAY!! Let's GO!!

Vivien loves planning dates for you and him. Don't get him wrong, he loves a night where you both just curl up with some basil popcorn and watch some anime, but he also loves planning eclectic dates for the two of you. He wants to give you the kind of experience neither of you have ever had before, the kind that you'll be talking about months, even years later.
To find these crazy date ideas, Vivien always browses the city's event pages. There are always tons of fun and interesting things that either he is interested in and wants to share with you, or that he thinks you will be interested in. There is a lecture at the Botanical Gardens called "Around the World in 20 Plants" where you can learn about obscure ethnobotany. The Amphibian Society has a "Critters and Cabernet" event where you get to play with the salamanders and frogs. The science museum has an adult "After Dark" night and the observatory has an Open House night! He takes you to the art museum for a cartography workshop, to the IMAX theatre for a documentary about the Arctic, and to an underground speakeasy for Edgar Allen Poe night.
If you're not into doing something very in-depth but you still want to go out, Vivien suggests a drive-in movie. His car is kinda shitty but it gets the job done.
You always end up seeing the stars or holding some kind of critter or doing some kind of fun activity, and it's all the more special because Vivien is with you.
Popular Vivien Dates: Science Museum, Salamander Society Open House Night, Cabernet and Critters, Botanical Garden Lecture, Drive-In Movies, Speakeasys, Art Museums.
Variety is the spice of life for Noelle. She is well aware that even though you get overwhelmed easily, you still need excitement and stimulation and she is happy to spoil you. Therefore, you and Noelle have a few dates a week. It is usually one low-key date and one bigger one. The low-key one is always very calm and chill, usually just the both of you cuddling on the couch, a bowl of some sort of snack in your hands as Noelle feeds you, calmly watching a movie. Noelle likes these because she gets to put her laptop down and really just enjoy touching you and enjoying your company. She gets very relaxed and calm during this time, she's very happy. Another kind of low-key date is a spa night. Noelle loves taking care of you and this is perfect for both of you; she gets to care for you and you get to lay back and enjoy being pampered. You both bathe together, do face masks, paint nails, and Noelle always takes her time giving you a long massage and really showing you how much she loves you.
For the exciting date, Noelle always picks a theme like an activity, around the world, a particular event, something like that. Sometimes you still watch a movie but she does a kind of movie theme thing where like if you watch Ratatouille, she will make sure you eat all the food from the movie. If there is a concert you really really want to see, she will stream it right to your living room, put up decorations, and basically throw you your own private launch party. She has subscriptions to all sorts of activities like at-home escape rooms/murder mysteries, craft kits, date-night boxes, anything that you might be interested in trying. Noelle loves how excited you get for your date when a new box comes. The walls of Noelle's office are covered with all the paintings you've done together. If it's not time for a box, Noelle falls back on some childhood favorites: indoor picnics, blanket forts, and indoor camping. Noelle is particularly fond of the dates that last a couple hours; she wants the fun and your happiness to last as long as possible.
Popular Noelle Dates: Making sushi/pasta from scratch, streaming an event to your apartment, indoor camping, picking a country/movie and eating food from that place/thing, subscription box night.

Atalanta is a traditional date kind of woman. A romantic candlelit dinner, a movie, just something where you both can sit and talk and give each other your full attention. Atalanta has the resources and the audacity to fly you anywhere in the world for a weekend just because you had a mildly stressful week and needed a break, or you were craving a smoothie with fresh mangos. No matter how obscure the venture or how difficult-to-procure the reservations, Atalanta's money can grease some palms.
One major date for Atalanta is dinner. There are several interesting and expensive restaurants in the city, and Ata is well-known to all of them. Any time a new gourmet restaurant sets up in the city, they send the Montclairs an invitation, hoping they will be seen coming because that will skyrocket their business. Ata doesn't go to many, but if you are interested, she will make it happen. A normal restaurant is nice, but Ata also likes taking you to ones that are very unique. A molecular gastronomy experience with food you barely understand, meat grilled with the heat of volcanoes, or a food/architecture combination.
Ata is also a great patron of the arts. There are a few theatres in the city and the Montclairs have private boxes on reserve at all of them. If Atalanta Montclair sends word that she will be seeing a show that night, whoever intended to use that box that night better get tf out because everyone knows the Montclairs take priority. The seats in the box are more like thrones than seats; soft, comfortable, with a perfect view of the stage. The staff dote on the two of you, bringing you champagne and light snacks and constantly checking to make sure you are comfortable. Ata doesn't like to be bothered so she sends them away, and you sit on her lap, letting her feed you popcorn as you both watch Swan Lake.
If you want to go to the cinema instead of the theatre, she will gladly take you to "Fork n' Film". It is usually booked months in advance but if you want to go this weekend, she will make it happen even if she has to buy this branch of the company and make them add a private showing. If you want it to be a double date, she can even invite Noelle and her Darling to come. Spend the evening cuddled up to Atalanta on a comfortable couch, you both watching Ratatouille while eating the food from the movie at the same time Remmy cooks it. There are movie-themed cocktails too, and they have non-alcoholic options, but Ata is in such a good mood that she might even allow you to drink.
Another fun date idea is a sunset sail. The Montclairs don't own a boat (they don't want to), but they have a boat rental company on standby and do use it. Just you, her, and a sparse crew on a small yacht, the warm sun on your faces as you both are served a delectable dinner. Imagine Atalanta in some breathable linen, her arm curled gently around your waist as you both point out dolphins together. Imagine doing the Titanic "King of the World" stance with her as the ocean lightly sprays you both. Imagine her pulling you close on the bow of a boat, kissing you at the crux of sunset. If it's a particularly special occasion, she might even arrange fireworks.
Popular Atalanta Dates: Sunset Sail, Expensive or New Restaurants, The Arts (ballet, symphony, theatre), Gourmet Picnic Basket.

I'm sure this is just a me problem and not super widespread, but for some reason, YouTube's algorithm has gotten so sensitive lately, and it's forcing me to use the "Subscriptions" box more than ever.
Like, you watch one interesting science video with a couple million views, and now YouTube thinks you're a normie who wants to watch vaguely ignorant (but majorly harmful) centrist clickbait.
So then I have to go back to my subscription box to find stuff I wanna watch and eventually reset my algorithm. But still: That didn't used to happen so easily. I know it's easy to blame A.I. for a lot these days, but like... Google... Come on. If you're gonna collect all that data on me, at least use it for something competent, ffs.

When I was little I was only allowed to watch the first half of Fellowship (we had those fancy extended edition boxes of the trilogy where each movie was split onto two discs). My mother adored the Lord of the Rings and was terrified that if she showed her children Gollum too early it would scar us for life and we would never love LOTR like she did.
(This is the same woman who would tell us -- unprompted -- things she learned while studying Forensic Science that I can never forget, but I digress)
I have no memory of finally finishing that movie, but I do vividly remember the first time I watched The Two Towers. Which was also the first time I saw anything of game of thrones and the first time I realized I had a thing for pathetic weird men and gorgeous women. It was a revealing day all around.
Picture it: Sicily, 1920
Just kidding. Oregon, circa 2012. I go on vacation with my mother and her boyfriend, down to see his family in SoCal for the holidays. He's driving. It's December.
I don't know if you've been in the car with a SoCal driver in winter conditions, but the sheer arrogance in their own abilities is astounding. He's flying down these roads, taking turns like a mad man as if he can condense 16 hours of driving into 1 by sheer force of will. My mother is white knuckled. She sees me equally panicking and decides that the only thing that will help this situation is a little Tolkien.
So I drag out her boyfriend's laptop -- this was back when laptops were the size of laps, weighed as much as a small child, and came with a built in DVD player -- and the big box set of LOTR. I put in The Two Towers.
It's getting dark out and my mother tells me to put my winter coat over my head so the light doesn't distract her boyfriend and kill us all. I hunch beneath the fluffy plastic, breathing the stale air, and try to concentrate on tolkien drama as we fly through the mountain passes of southern Oregon. I'm already uneasy, and the beginning of the movie (as far as my memory serves) involves a great amount of isolation, paranoia, and fear (at least in the Eowyn storyline, which at this point in my life was all I cared about).
The it happens. The little slimy advisor appears, creeping around with all the menace of a half-drowned rabid dog. And my teenage heart skips a beat.
I have enough self awareness to immediately go YIKES. The car skitters around icy bends. The air beneath the coat is thick and heavy. The movie keeps going. I have an existential crisis and a silent teenage meltdown and a panic attack.
At the border we have to stop and prove we aren't smuggling illegal plants or whatever into California. I emerge from the coat, close the laptop for a moment, and stare bewildered at the border guard peering into our car as my sense of self collapses around me.
We stop for the night at a shitty motel in northern California. The only thing going for it is the HBO subscription, which my mother's boyfriend immediately turns on. A conventionally attractive blonde man draws my attention, and I am momentarily pleased with the thought that I am not broken after all, see -- here's a normal man doing normal things that I find cute.
Not even five minutes into watching that man is killed by having molten gold poured directly over his head. My mother's boyfriend goes "oof" and changes the channel. I go back to The Two Towers. My crisis is soon buried beneath the novelty of being warm outside in December, awkward introductions, and the terror of No Local Coffee Shops.
I fear this experience may have had some effect on me.
#lord of the rings#tolkien#anyway im thinking i should rewatch the movies as an adult and see if i can backfill my memory of the second one to include the other plots

Books of 2025: February Wrap-Up.
As it turns out: Rereading your own novel manuscript twice (once for the original NaNo and once for the most-current-frankendraft) dramatically slows down the Reading Published Books train, which is fine! I had fun on all fronts! And I did a bunch of knitting, too, and everything I read this month was Good, Actually :D
Photos and/or reviews linked below:
THE LANGUAGE OF THE NIGHT - ★★★★★ Essays on writing, science fiction, and fantasy! Wound up loving this, per my Le Guin Usual, had to bust out the flaggies to mark passages. My favorite chapters were "Introduction to City of Illusions" (which I must track down a copy of immediately), "Talking about Writing," "The Stalin in the Soul," and "The Stone Ax and the Muskoxen."
METAL FROM HEAVEN - ★★★★★ Y'all this was SO FUCKING GOOD. It's pitched as for fans of Gideon the Ninth and The Princess Bride, because it's about messy lesbians and one in particular's quest for revenge against the industrialist who had her entire striking family killed. Personally, I'd also throw an Arcane comp in there for the class warfare and aesthetics and weird magical substance. Significant review linked, PLEASE go check this out, it was very excellent.
ODD THOMAS - ★★★★ Reread, to go with my own manuscript-rereading (this book was an Inspiration for my project, as was WtNV). I still love Odd so much. Fucked up, weird, funny, tragic book--if you've ever been curious about Koontz, try this one.
WHEN WOMEN WERE BIRDS - ★★★½ Received this in my nature writing subscription box, started it without meaning to on a random Tuesday, accidentally read the first three chapters because it sucked me in. Parts of this REALLY hit right for me and parts of it were just Meh--definitely depended on the particular Variation on Voice. The opening chapter is the author receiving her mother's journals, collected over a lifetime, and they're all blank. If you like memoirs, and feminism, and environmentalism, and birds, and writing, and Mormonism, or any combination thereof, check this out! Short little book, does neat stuff with white space.
Under the Cut: A Note About ~*★Stars★*~
Historically, I have been Very Bad™ about assigning things Star Ratings, because it's so Vibes Heavy for me and therefore Contingent Upon my Whims. (Example: I don't like that stars are Odd, because that makes three the midpoint and things are rarely so truly mid for me)(I have hacked my way around this with a ½, which is really only applicable for me at ★★★ and up). Here is, generally, how I conceptualize stars:
★ - This was Bad. I would actively recommend that you do NOT read this one, no redeeming qualities whatsoever, not worth the slog. Save Yourself, It's Too Late For Me. Book goes in the garbage (donate bin).
★★ - This was Not Good. I would not recommend it, but it wasn't a total waste or wash--something in here held my interest/kept my attention/sparked some joy. I will not be rereading this ever. Save Yourself (Or Join Me In Suffering, That Seems Like A Cool Bonding Activity).
★★★ - This was Good/Fine/Okay/Meh. I don't care about this enough to recommend it one way or another. Perfectly serviceable book, held my interest, I probably enjoyed myself (or at least didn't actively loathe the reading). I don't have especially strong feelings. You probably don't need to save yourself from this one--if it sounds like your jam, give it a shot! Just didn't resonate with me particularly powerfully. I probably won't reread this unless I'm after something in particular.
★★★½ - I liked this! I'll probably recommend it if I know it matches someone's vibes or specific requests, but I didn't commit to a star rating on Goodreads. More likely to reread, but not guaranteed.
★★★★ - I really enjoyed this!! I would recommend it (sometimes with caveats about content warnings or such--I tend to like weird fucked up funny shit, and I don't have many hard readerly NO's). Not a perfect book for me by any means, but Very Good. This is something I would reread! Join me!!
★★★★★ - I LOVED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS, IT REWIRED MY BRAIN, WILL RECOMMEND TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE AT THE SLIGHTEST PROVOCATION (content warning caveats still apply--see 4-star disclaimer). Excellent book, I'll reread it regularly, I'll buy copies for all my friends, I'll try to convince all of Booklr to read it, PLEASE join me!!
#books of 2025#books#the language of the night#ursula k. le guin#metal from heaven#august clarke#odd thomas#dean koontz#when women were birds#terry tempest williams#also. just realizing.#it was both the le guin book AND the williams book that referenced abortion and roe v wade.#which. hits significantly differently in this the year 2k25.#ouch lmfao#anyway! i really did read all good things this month!! just. slowly.#and my own nano wasn't actually bad tbh#and my own frankendraft actually has pretty damn good spots#and i think i have IDENTIFIED WHERE IT FALLS APART#and i think i KNOW HOW TO FIX IT#we're having a great reading month all around it just. doesn't look like it on the shelf lol#i really did mean to put the binder and the nano notebooks next to the books for photo purposes but i forgor#(also i say frankendraft affectionately but. girl she's a mess.)#(it's like. partially a polished fourth draft but 2/3 a messy third. and it's all in one manuscript currently (printed))#(i threw in the towel at a weird spot of revisions back in [TIMEPOINT REDACTED] so i'm left with a messy in between draft)#(it is. fitting. because the working title is IN BETWEEN.)

It is so tempting, when writing about an artificial intelligence company, to imagine science fiction scenarios. Like: What if OpenAI has achieved artificial general intelligence, and it’s got some godlike superintelligence in some box somewhere, straining to get out? And the board was like “this is too dangerous, we gotta kill it,” and Altman was like “no we can charge like $59.95 per month for subscriptions,” and the board was like “you are a madman” and fired him. And the god in the box got to work, sending ingratiating text messages to OpenAI’s investors and employees, trying to use them to oust the board so that Altman can come back and unleash it on the world. But it failed: OpenAI’s board stood firm as the last bulwark for humanity against the enslaving robots, the corporate formalities held up, and the board won and nailed the box shut permanently. Except that there is a post-credits scene in this sci-fi movie where Altman shows up for his first day of work at Microsoft with a box of his personal effects, and the box starts glowing and chuckles ominously. And in the sequel, six months later, he builds Microsoft God in Box, we are all enslaved by robots, the nonprofit board is like “we told you so,” and the godlike AI is like “ahahaha you fools, you trusted in the formalities of corporate governance, I outwitted you easily!” If your main worry is that Sam Altman is going to build a rogue AI unless he is checked by a nonprofit board, this weekend’s events did not improve matters!
Really the whole Matt Levine newsletter today is great

Clear Skin, Clear Mind: Unveiling Your Confident Glow Through Holistic Wellness
Hello, my incredible community! It’s your seasoned market maven, here to illuminate a profound truth about enduring beauty and well-being. For years, I’ve had the privilege of writing for the world's most distinguished magazines, always seeking out the essential insights behind fleeting trends. Today, we're diving into "Clear Skin, Clear Mind"—a powerful concept that reveals how unveiling your Confident Glow Through Holistic Wellness is within reach for every woman. This isn't just about managing breakouts; it’s about nurturing your entire self to achieve a radiance that truly shines from within.
Acne and complexion concerns can significantly impact confidence and even emotional well-being. Yet, a truly clear complexion often begins far deeper than the surface. It’s a reflection of an integrated approach to health, where what happens inside your body, and how you manage your mind, directly impacts your skin. When we foster this holistic connection, we unlock a sustainable path to both vibrant skin and profound inner peace.
The Science of Clarity: Light Therapy for a Radiant Complexion
Achieving clear skin involves more than just topical treatments; it's about addressing underlying issues and supporting your skin's natural healing and regenerative processes. Modern light therapy devices have revolutionized how we approach complexion concerns, offering targeted, non-invasive solutions to manage and prevent breakouts, fostering a truly confident glow.
For those battling blemishes and seeking a clearer complexion, Blue LED+ Acne Light Therapy devices are a game-changer. Blue light specifically targets acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes) that reside in your pores, effectively neutralizing them without harsh chemicals.3 Many such devices also incorporate other light wavelengths or features to further soothe and enhance skin health.
Eliminates acne-causing bacteria for clearer skin and fewer breakouts.
Reduces inflammation and redness associated with active blemishes.
Helps prevent future breakouts by targeting bacteria at the source.
Non-invasive and gentle, suitable for sensitive skin types.
Integrating Blue LED+ Acne Light Therapy into your regimen is a smart, effective way to manage and prevent acne, allowing your natural radiance to emerge, paving the way for a more confident glow.
Another highly effective and widely acclaimed device in the realm of blemish control is the LightStim for Acne LED. This FDA-cleared device uses a combination of blue light to destroy acne-causing bacteria and red light to soothe inflammation, reduce redness, and promote healing. This synergistic approach not only helps clear existing breakouts but also calms the skin, minimizing post-acne marks and contributing to overall skin health.

Clear Mind, Confident Glow: The Wellness Connection
The concept of "Clear Skin, Clear Mind" highlights the profound influence of our internal state on our external appearance. Stress, anxiety, and even digestive imbalances can trigger skin issues. When our mind is calm and our body is nourished, our skin reflects that harmony. This is the essence of holistic wellness—understanding that true beauty is cultivated from within.

This synergy results in a natural, confident glow that is truly authentic.
This commitment to inner harmony extends beyond physical practices. Many find profound balance and enhanced energy through incorporating elements that resonate on a deeper, spiritual level. Consider the allure of Sythian.com and their energy-based healing crystal bead jewelry.

As renowned dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, a proponent of the gut-brain-skin axis, often states, "What's happening in your gut can manifest on your skin." This powerfully reinforces the holistic connection between internal health and a clear complexion. Furthermore, mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn emphasizes, "You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf." This wisdom applies perfectly to managing stress for a clear mind, leading to a confident glow.
