scientists have big brains but the energy payoff is that their souls atrophy at a faster rate than usual so to combat that they need to read more books. and by more books I mean more clarice lispector
#should I give my neuropsychologist pi my copy of family ties and tell her to chill the fuck out#I’m being serious#every time I have to directly speak to her I get deep fear in my heart and her valley accent does not help matters#I can’t grow up to be whatever that is I need to keep my whimsy about me#I respect her like crazy btw I just think she needs to imbue her soul w some literature#And ik bc whenever my life is just nuts and bolts science I go crazy#Just like I am rn

#i love love love how much his design and his voice and his eccentricities pull from golden age classical hollywood like !!!!!!!!!!!! wow!!!!#even the way he says academy like it makes it sound like he’s speaking about THE academy (aka the academy of motion picture arts & science)#(aka the oscars)#but anyway the browns and ivories paired with gold accents is SO classical hollywood of him#inky.reca#obsessed OBSESSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thank you for the ducks, me and my home country also really love Donald Duck and other ducks and Don Rosa is a celebrity to us
i'm so bummed that the ducks aren't very big here in the uk! the rest of europe has it right. the ducks deserve to be beloved. whenever i travel to other european countries i gather all the duck i can find. i have so many books in different languages just because i physically can't resist a book filled with ducks.
the first scrooge book i ever scored on an english bookshelf was don rosa's life and times of scrooge mcduck and it's one of my favourite books i own. i just fell in love with scrooge. i love him so much, he feels like family to me. i love his family, and i love how funny and weirdly honest the familial relationships are. i just... augh. i want to hug every duck book i own. they literally are like serotonin on a page, for me. life can't be so bad, if i have ducks.
i think the thing that makes me love the ducks so much vs a lot of other media is that donald and scrooge especially are just. so. they're defined by their flaws. scrooge is stingy. donald is quick-to-temper. those are their defining characteristics but they're still the guys we love and we root for even though their defining characteristic should make them unlikeable. but we LOVE them. and they're at each other's throats but we loooove them we looove them we love them. they're jerks to each other but we LOOOOVE them...
i think i remember reading something about the success of donald duck overseas vs the success of mickey mouse being that - mickey is the poster child and kind of has to be sweet and sanitised, but donald can get messy and that's why we love him. and i love him.
love a little cutey ducky with anger issues from birth
sighs.. family...
#i found this great online store for second hand books and i've been hoarding up loads of science fiction novels from it lately.#but i didn't see if they have any duck comics there!! maybe they do.#im running out of space for all these books. but i just love having physical comics#i love comics !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#i remember having my first scrooge mcduck book in hand and pointing to the pages mom!!! look!!#scrooge mcduck is from glasgow!! just like you!!#as someone with a scottish family i gotta tell you. the clan mcduck can be something so personal.#i read aloud lately (new development) and i gotta tell you. reading the duck comics is a delight.#because a scottish accent is one of the few accents i can pull off with confidence. and so the comics are so fun to read that way#sci speaks

got curious because I was thinking about a friend I had whose british accent seemed super sophisticated and elegant to everyone at school, and then she was like "thanks I got it from Dan and Phil" lmao
#dan and phil#phan#dunno if this question applies to enough people but I think a lot of us watched them growing up so hopefully?#this is real science i promise#been thinking about the cursed amount of britishisms i use these days though for reasons unrelated to this#immovable object that is a carefully practiced american accent vs force of 'i can't be arsed' you know#one day I'll say it ironically and never stop. it always works that way. how disturbing#anyway pls share Nuance if u got any I'd love to hear stuff#.kas

Accents can be very deceiving and I noticed that once again when Pasin, who had been talking in korean with a thai accent the whole show, suddenly spoke thai on the phone and sounded like someone who had never once spoken thai, making me realize I had fooled myself to think Pasin was played by a thai actor because of his fake accent with familiar intonations
#a shop for killers#no characteristic of a person tells so much of their origins as the language they speak#but people can imitate. they can learn other languages and use all kinds of different accents.#so what is like science can also be like a party trick#(and it's fun either way!!!)

Wish the word agricola had trickled down from Latin into English. Great word
#unfortunately when I speak Latin I have an English accent bc I learned it from an elderly woman with a thick accent herself. perils of#Catholic school#i say this as if I speak Latin. i meant say a Latin word pretty much#could be reused as a soda in a science fiction future. wow. the world is abundant with possibility

I've actually been scrounging for an ending to Ellenville, because it's hard to actually 'end' a tragedy with something that feels complete, and that last post hit me with yeah, that's right. Because we live in a world where blood is protection and the cost of safety; and it fits in so neatly with the themes of death as stasis and longevity.
The 'end' is the regulations in place. Not even watching it happen, but success. This is The Pushcart War but epic fantasy.
#ellenville#ptxt#Jean Merrill is up there with Jean Craighead George for the imprinting I did on Pushcart War and Toothpaste Millionaire.#Which is ironic as FUCK because my curriculum definitely wanted me to take away 'You can be entrepreneurial too! Which is killing big truck#And undercutting big toothpaste business by packing yours in sterilized baby jars!' when I actually took away what Merrill#wanted which was: 'Hey isn't it fucked up that large companies think they can push you around and we need a capitalist underdog#success story to feel happy about our lives and role in the ongoing oligarchy of capitalism?'#Homeschooling with sonlight was fucking wild. I read so many good books as a kid and credit it to the fact I grew up with empathy#But it also meant I grew up with States Rights narratives and libertarian propaganda I had to unlearn.#Total aside because this is a tag essay anyway and I don't want to make a new post: I found out my advisor was also homeschooled#Which is probably why we're the exact same person I'm just 12 years behind them without the accent. My own brother almost#mistook them for me from behind and he gets pissy about it lol. 'There are two of them now!'#BUT I SWEAR I'M NOT COPYING THEM. WE JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE THE EXACT SAME HISTORICAL INTERESTS AND#SLAVISH DEVOTION TO GEOLOGY THAT TRANSFORMED INTO THE APPLICATIONS OF GEOLOGY AS A SCIENCE.#In my defense they have a much broader and recent focus on geology: usually for the impact of mining/geology on historical events.#Whereas I like the economic and logistical side of things. Like who hated who because they had beef over the same mines Nitrate War style

Il dit ‘Je m’appelle Descole. Je suis un homme de science destiné à accomplir de grandes chose.’ (My name is Descole. I am a man of science destined to accomplish great things.)
#rough translation#not an autistic man of science here I see#fun note is that it’s pronounced des-cohl the proper French way because there’s no accent over the e#I don’t remember how the other languages say it#thyme plays l’appel du spectre
