I am not French. I am American.

Napoleon set up the Maison d’éducation de le Légion d'honneur originally as girls schools for girls whose fathers, grandfathers, or great-grandfathers were awarded the Légion d’honneur. Today, access to these scholls is still by hereditary right.

The schools might have been based on the model of the Saint Cyr school, but there were also differences and Napoleon did make note not to make them too much like Saint Cyr.

Napoleon signed the decree on December 15, 1805 at Schonnbrunn Palace that ordered the creation of three schools that girls would enter at the ages between 7 and 10 and leave the schools at the age of 21.

Napoleon had originally planned to open a school for the orphans, boys and girls, created by the Battle of Austerlitz, but this was originally abandoned. There were many military schools around who were attending the education of the boys, but since the revolution the schools that educated girls, mainly by convents and nuns, had disappeared. The schools Napoleon created were meant to take care of the orphans of his best soldiers and military men who had died in battles.

The education was to be simple, he wrote to Madame Campan who ran the schools, “Bring up for us believers and no thinkers.” The education was to “master vanity”, which Napoleon believed was most active in females, and teach these young girls to be modest wives and mothers.

The three original schools were: Ecouen, Saint-Denis, Les Loges.
