Okay I’ve been listening to the McElroy’s since like 2018 and tbh I haven’t heard about the drama or their ‘downfall’ (they’re still doing national tours and releasing new merch so idk how much of a downfall it is, maybe just more of the entertainment industries natural ebb and flow of popularity)

BUT my comment isn’t about that.

As someone with a father who likely has NPD (not officially diagnosed- he would never talk to a therapist, but he shows all the signs), listening to Travis and how he interacts with his family is a fucking breath of fresh air. Putting my thoughts under a read more bc they got kinda long

Because he’s been open about his NPD, and open about the work he’s done because he doesn’t want to treat people poorly. If you listen to MBMBAM or Schmanners you can also hear how he listens to his brothers or his wife when they’re trying to reign him in, and you can hear how they also work with him and don’t expect him to be perfect all the time. It’s subtle sometimes, but it’s there

Listening to Travis really showed me that NPD doesn’t have to take control of someone’s life. People with NPD CAN choose to listen, and get help, and try to be better. Listening to him showed me that nothing my father did was my fault, or was unavoidable. Because people can choose to be better, and he just didn’t make that choice.

Idk this got really long but it’s exhausting seeing fandom completely turn their backs on someone for not being the most perfect and morally pure person, because that person doesn’t exist. If fans don’t learn that even their most precious heroes are still human, then we’re never going to be able to actually enjoy things without the fear that someone, somewhere, is going to decide that it’s problematic.

really fucking sucks that the catalyst for the mcelroy brothers' "downfall" was when one of them *checks notes* displayed symptoms of the mental illness he was very open about, in a way that was deeply embarrassing but ultimately pretty harmless

If you want practice with English idioms and to learn where they came from (which I know helps me sometimes) the show Manners Schmanners has Idiom episodes all the time! You can probably look up those episodes in particular!

But yeah idioms and other metaphorical language is ROUGH

Candlenights 2020 Announced!

From The McElroy Family website:

“We’re pleased to announce we’ll be doing a Candlenights Special this year! This pre-taped extravaganza will feature video segments from MBMBaM, Sawbones, Shmanners, Wonderful, and Still Buffering, as well as appearances from special guests! All benefits from the show will be donated to Harmony House, which seeks to end homelessness in the Huntington area through permanent housing and supportive service programs.

The show will air on December 19th at 8PM ET. Tickets are pay what you want with a $6.25 minimum, and the show will be available through January 4th, 2021. We will have an exclusive Candlenights 2020 poster available for sale, and all proceeds from sales of this poster will be donated to Harmony House, along with all proceeds from sales of Candlenights merchandise bought from December 19th through January 1st.”

I need new podcasts!

Hey friends! I work a job that allows me to have headphones in pretty much all day and I've noticed that what I choose to listen to can greatly affect my day.

When I'm at work, I need something funny and engaging and around an hour long (maybe more, but no less than 40 minutes please!). I'm currently up to date with TAZ, MBMBAM, WWDTM, and WTNV (which I love but is absolutely not practical for my job since its only 20 minutes so I need to stop and switch episodes pretty often.)

So I'm looking for something in that vein. I love Ologies, the IASIP podcast, Sawbones, Planet Money, Hidden Brain, Radiolab, and Parks and Recollection, too, but I use those as evening podcasts for falling asleep. I'm looking for something with more energy that may be more game oriented to keep me entertained while I aimlessly wander and put away books.

(Also no true crime please!)
