Honestly, I have to wonder if what's going on here is that the creators are somewhat anti-LaRusso and anti-Mr. Miyagi. Especially Hayden Schlossburg. I mean, their writing for Daniel and Sam in the first season comes off like they wanted the audience to dislike them. And there was a recent interview where Jon Hurwitz seemed to suggest they like writing more for characters like Tory, Johnny, etc. than they do for ones like Daniel and Sam.

They’re fans of Cobra Kai and Johnny Lawrence first and foremost, that much has been clear over the course of the show, but WOW they really came out and ADMITTED IT with their whole chest.

It’s infuriating because they put Johnny on such a great path in the first few seasons—he was a fuck-up who’d make so many mistakes in his life, who was on a path to fixing those mistakes. But then…in s4 (probably even s3, but I’m being charitable), they regressed Johnny back to how he was at the start of s1 with no negative consequences. His alcoholism? Haha no silly he just likes drinking it sooo much, that’s normal! His insensitive comments? Haha he’s such a goof isn’t he. His bad parenting of Robby? Haha no he just makes mistakes and does the best he can to fix them, Robby should be glad he’s even bothering to try!

And my god, the way they conflate being passive with being a pacifist (thus stripping away so much of what made Mr. Miyagi who he is—he was never passive, he made the choice to be a pacifist and it was hard and he had so much grief inside him) and act like Miyagi-Do is a soft baby creed that can’t work in an actual fight…*screams in frustration*

I just…*heavy sigh* they’ve already destroyed so much of what makes this show good, crushed the resonant themes and character arcs under their heels. The least they could do at this point is not ruin Mr. Miyagi any further (just say the scrolls are full of family pictures or whatever, or make them empty KFP-style (tying back to “true karate is inside you”)). I might come away from this show feeling somewhat fulfilled if they do.

It’s late October and the grapes are off the vines here in the 2024 harvest. I haven’t seen any Eiswein candidates in my travels to date. The Schlossburg Grand Cru region is just north of Kaysersberg , soaring above the city. I would love to see the city from the top trellises — another ascent, I know!

Over de grens in Noordrhein-Westfalen ligt het prachtige slot Burg op een bergkam langs de rivier de Wupper. De burcht is gebouwd in de vroege 12e eeuw door graaf Adolf II van Berg. In de 17e eeuw raakte het zwaar beschadigd tijdens de 30-jarige oorlog tussen Guliks-Kleefse successieoorlog tussen de graven Kleef & de Pfaltz tegen het Heilige Roomse Rijk. De burcht was zo beschadigd dat het in de 18e eeuw al niet meer werd genoemd op kaarten. Aan het einde van de 19e eeuw, onder invloed van de Duitse eenwording, werd besloten om het kasteel her op te bouwen. Van 1880 tot 1925 werd gebouwd aan de burcht. Tegenwoordig heeft de burcht een prachtig uitzicht over de Wupper. ————— The German Schloss Burg has a long history dating back to the 12th century. It was build by count Adolf II. For the sake of my own sanity, I'm going g to assume that Hayden Schlossburg's comment about Robby deserving the pain S4 was him speaking from Robby's perspective. I would have to argue it's true to some degree. Certainly Hayden Schlossburg comes off that way when I look at the things he says about Tory in his tweets. And let's be real, I'd say Tory's "sexy, tough Cobra Kai chick" thing (along with being played by Peyton List) has a lot to do with how people perceive her character. Tory getting support from Amanda probably also contributes to fan perception (given that Amanda is one of the most universally liked characters).

It is clear that in season 4, the writers did throw Sam under the bus by making her seem gratuitously aggressive. They also set Tory and Robby up as the people the audience should root for, when based on their prior actions they really aren't. Asking the audience to root for Tory over Sam given the past two seasons of bad behavior Tory has shown towards Sam just seems like bad writing. And it's definitely odd that the writers seem to do a 180 on how they want the audience to view Sam, especially since she is supposed to be one of the protagonists.

I would go so far as to say that this is an example of the show not knowing to have balance in the writing for a rivalry. The writers often heavily imply that we should root for one character over another, or frame one character as "the good guy" and the other as "the bad guy" without a lot of nuance. And they also have a big issue with course-correcting (in season 4's case, course-correcting legit criticism over Tory being a bit two-dimensional and not-so-legit "criticism" of Amanda being too lenient on Sam).

Let's be real, they could've found a way to make Tory sympathetic without having to paint Sam like she's Satan personified for being angry at Tory. They took the easy way out by giving Tory a "sob story" and the trappings of things that are meant to make the audience sympathetic to her without considering what these things would mean to someone in Tory's situation.

When it comes to the writing having bias towards Tory, I think it's safe to say that biases do exist in writers' rooms, and some of the writers' voices are louder than others in the room. Meaning that the the ones biased towards Tory happen to be the ones who have the most influence. (I think that's definitely true of Hayden Schlossburg based on his Tweets; not so sure about Jon Hurwitz or Josh Heald)

Yeah looking at Hayden’s past tweets, he definitely seems to have Tory as his favourite. Afterall, he ships Toriguel. Having bias is bound to happen with writers, but that shouldn’t stop them from telling a story and moving the plot along with the characters. They haven’t done Sam any favours. Like you said in your previous most, Sam is supposed to be a protagonist, one we should be rooting for. Instead, fans have hated her and rooted for Tory, the one who we shouldn’t be rooting for and has had all her previous deeds overlooked, whereas Sam has been continuously vilified by the fan base. Her hate is unbelievable overrated. And yeah it’s like you said, it is because Tory is played by Peyton List. I don’t know whether the writers have written Sam in that way purposefully- are we supposed to hate her? Are we supposed to root for Tory?

If that’s the case, then It should’ve been apparent from the beginning of the series- Sam is someone we’re not supposed to be rooting for, but hey come season 2, we are gonna get someone who you will be rooting for and hey let’s get someone ‘hot’ 🙈🤦🏻‍♀️
