My 52 Weeks With Christie: A 2022 Revisit to The Pale Horse Part 1 The Pale Horse by Agatha Christie Word of Warning: If you haven’t read Christie’s The Pale Horse, proceed at your own risk, as this write-up contains spoilers. I’ll try and mitigate them if I can….but in covering what I want to cover in this piece, there isn’t a good way of avoiding plot points. So if you’ve already cracked this…

My cardigan is turning out to be so cute I cannot wait to be done with it and wear it out.
06|11|2023
I decided to take the whole week off from studying. Initially my plan was to study for the first couple of days of the week and then rest, but to be honest I was quite productive last week, and most importantly I really need time to recharge before my new classes start. This is the second week of the new self care journey I am doing with my friend @oneardentstudybuddy, and I think that a week of rest to get back some enrgies is a great addition to it. I don't have big plans other than doing what I feel like doing and not feeling guilty about it.
cozy hobbit autumn activities and productivity:
read first thing in the morning
ran some errands with my dad and got new pyjamas pants, they're slightly big because I'm smol but seem to be super warm and I cannot wait to get super cozy
sat down with my bujo to check in on my study progress in the past couple of weeks and I am actutally really proud of myself for eveything I have accomplished last week
spent the afternoon working on my crochet project, listening to podcasts and drinking tea
did my daily Irish practice on duolingo
wrote the first draft of a book review I'll be posting soon
today's self care:
had my monthly therapy session
1/7 days off from studying
I'll make sure to turn my phone off at least half an hour before sleep and read a couple of pages of a book

Pantone chose Greenery as 2017’s color of the year, and it was reported that the decision was intended to help sway the public towards embracing more eco-friendly trends and policies, an idea that I find every bit as ludicrous as the reasoning behind picking Ultra Violet for 2018. (Political divisions will not be healed by more purple clothing.) Greenwashing is useless for so many reasons. Commercial greens are often made with pigment green 7, which contains chlorine and can’t be recycled or composted safely. Pigment green 36 also contains chlorine, as well as bromide atoms, and inorganic pigment green 50 is “a noxious cocktail of cobalt, titanium, nickel, and zinc oxide,” writes the design expert Alice Rawsthorne in a 2010 article for the New York Times. “Ironic, isn’t it?” the German chemist Michael Braungart adds. “The color green can never be green, because of the way it is made. It’s impossible to dye plastic green or to print green ink on paper without contaminating them.” Green has become greener, fake flowers have become ever more convincing, but our unquenchable thirst for the false purity of an aesthetic Eden remains.

PISTOL-PACKING STRAIGHT OUTTA THE FASHION HOUSES OF NEW YORK, PARIS, ROME, & TOKYO -- IN THE MIGHTY MARVEL MANNER.
PIC(S) INFO: Mega spotlight on assorted house ads for the "Dakota North" American limited comic book series published by Marvel Comics from June 1986 to February 1987. The series was co-created by writer Martha Thomases and artist Tony Salmons.
OVERVIEW: "Just like movie trailers, house ads are an important part of the deployment of the medium that is often cast aside, because they represent an uncomfortably naked commercial aspect. Also like movie trailers, they are often much better than the actual thing they exist to promote. Take, for example, the house ad promoting the mostly forgotten "Dakota North" miniseries from 1986: it’s a thing of wonder; of beauty, even. Tony Salmons, an artist known more for his comedic touch, draws the self-assured protagonist gazing directly at the reader, holding a gun to her side, not pointing at the reader or any possible antagonist (this is a pose rather than a promise for action). Her jacket opens, promising something that wouldn’t pass the PG-13 rating, only to be blocked by the title of the series. Above her, a single word with dots enhancing each letter: S*T*Y*L*E.
such a note-perfect evocation of that famous adage about how “all you need for a movie is a girl and a gun” (a quote attributed to Godard, but goes much further back to the days of "Birth of a Nation" director D. W. Griffith). It promises everything the reader might want, and it owns, entirely, any criticisms that might be lobbed at it.
Is it shallow? Exploitative? Pandering? Heck yes! It’s STYLE. Nothing in the actual series looks quite this good, though possibly this has more to do with the terrible print quality. To this day I can post that particular house ad on social media and pick up engagement like no one’s business – you don’t need to know anything about "Dakota North" to be impressed by it. The image is iconic enough to stand on its own. What it promises, nothing can truly deliver. Better stick to your dreams.
Here’s an important thing: I attribute that the ad was drawn by Tony Salmons (and probably colored by Christie Scheele for that matter), because he was the artist for the series and he has a rather unique style (sorry, S*T*Y*L*E) of his own. But his name isn’t on it. For most house ads, especially in ye olden days, you won’t see artist signatures, and finding out who made what is a game of guessing and digging. It’s a massive part of the comics industry – or used to be before the internet pushed all ads online and off my mind, that has almost nothing written about it."

Daredevil: The Man Without Fear
🥳 Daarin krijgen we ‘Daredevil: The Man Without Fear’.
Verdict
‘Man Without Fear’ voelt aan als een project dat recht uit het hart komt. Frank Miller en John Romita Jr. leveren beiden topwerk. Dit verhaal gaat over Daredevil. Wie hij is, wat hem maakt, wat hem drijft. Het is echt en rauw.
Het grootste compliment is dat dit verhaal sindsdien zo’n beetje de blauwdruk is geworden voor Daredevil’s verschijningen, ook in andere media. Mijn advies: kopen deze strip! 🙌

Can trees withstand the UV and X rays that come from the sun?
Do trees absorb UV radiation?
Studies about spectral absorbance, reflectance and transmit- tance of tree leaves to UV radiation (e.g. Yang et al., 1995; Grant et al., 2003; Qi et al., 2010) generally conclude that about 90–95% of UV is absorbed, 5–9% reflected and <0.1% transmitted through leaves regardless of tree species.
Do plants absorb UV rays?
Flavonoids and anthocyanins absorb UV radiation, and they generally accumulate in the epidermis, where they could keep UV radiation from reaching photosynthetic tissues (Hahlbrock and Scheel, 1989). The epidermis blocks trans- mittance of 95 to 99% of incoming UV radiation (Robberecht and Caldwell, 1978).
Is UV light good for trees?
Ultraviolet light has been shown to help speed up the process of photosynthesis and lead to increased plant growth. One study published in the peer-reviewed journal Oecologia found that exposure to UV-A light increased photosynthesis by 12%.
How do plants protect themselves from UV rays?
Plants have evolved "sunscreen" flavonoids that accumulate under UV-B stress to prevent or limit damage. The UV-B receptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8) plays a critical role in promoting flavonoid biosynthesis to enhance UV-B stress tolerance.3 Nov 2021
Does radiation damage trees?
There are many endpoints for estimating effects of radiation in exposed trees. Suppression of reproductive ability, reduction in fertility of the seeds, dried needles, morphological changes, death of trees and reduction of primary forest productivity can be considered among such endpoints.
Can plants survive without UV?
What Kind of Light Do Plants Need to Grow? Contrary to popular belief, plants do not need ultraviolet (UV) light to grow. Plants require blue and red light, which are not a part of the UV color spectrum. Blue light encourages chlorophyll production, which helps the plants create strong and healthy stems and leaves.30 Sept 2019
Why don't plants get sunburn? - BBC Science Focus Magazine
Scientists have known since 2011 that plant cells have a protein called UVR8 that can detect shorter wavelength UVB rays, which is the type of UV radiation most responsible for sunburn. This protein signals the cells to begin producing compounds that block further UV damage and repair DNA damage.

Where their foot is touching the blue half of the cover is 6 arrows in rainbow order. The title says Queer: A Graphic History. The names Meg-John Barker and Julia Scheele are in the bottom corner. A review says ‘A concise, precise & beautifully illustrated introduction’ - Kieron Gillen, writer, The Wicked + The Divine. End ID]
Queer: A Graphic History Written by Meg-John Barker and Illustrated by Julia Scheele was extremely helpful to me in understanding what Queer Theory actually is. I had first learned that Queer Theory was a thing when my English class learned about different lenses that you could analyze books through. I did a presentation on queer theory and was assigned a very dense textbook chapter to read. It made very very little sense, and I decided I didn’t like queer theory. This book does an amazing job giving a timeline of what Queer Theory is and how it was started, who some key thinkers were, and where they succeeded and failed, all while providing amazing illustrations to look at. Each page or two is basically a different topic, and they all build on each other. This book is also written very conversationally, as if the author was talking directly to you, and so there isn’t a lot of confusing language. When there is an unfamiliar term, however, the author makes sure to take their time in explaining it so that the reader can fully understand the concept.
Queer Theory is still very very confusing, but this book helped me understand what the point of it is, and how different people go about it. I highly recommend that anyone who is curious about the subject should read this book as an introduction!

Note
Can you recommend any books about non-binary identity other than your own? I just finished "Gender Queer", and intend to buy a copy as a present for a family member who's trying to wrap her head around the concept, but if you know of any other material on the subject I'd really appreciate it.
Hello, yes! Here are some other books you could try:
Sissy: A Coming of Gender Story by Jacob Tobia, a prose memoir
She Wants It: Desire, Power and Toppling the Patriarchy by Jill Soloway, a prose memoir
A Year Without a Name: A Memoir by Cyrus Grace Dunham, a prose memoir
Carework: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, a series of prose essays
Femme in Public by Alok Vaid-Menon, a poetry collection
Pansy by Andrea Gibson, a poetry collection
The Gender Creative Child: Pathways for Nurturing and Supporting Children Who Live Outside Gender Boxes by Dr. Diane Ehrensaft, prose nonfiction
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Leguin, prose sci-fi
Out of Salem by Hal Schrieve, young adult fiction (light horror elements)
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor, literary fiction
Grease Bats by Archie Bongiovanni, slide of life humor comics
Across A Field of Starlight by Blue Delliquanti, sci-fi comic
All of the above are books I have already read. Below are three I haven't read yet, but they come so well reviewed I feel confident recommending them:

God's Own Country: A Happy Ending for Gay Film
In Yorkshire, northern England, 24-year-old Johnny Saxby lives with his father, Martin, and grandmother, Deirdre, and runs a family farm together. Johnny has to do endless farm work day in and day out, so in his free time, he often numbs himself with alcohol and sex. One day, a Romanian migrant worker, Gheorghe Ionescu, was hired by Martin to help with the busy lambing season. Johnny does not get along well with this quiet and handsome 27-year-old young man until one day he tackles Johnny to the ground and warns Johnny not to call him "gypsy" again. On the next day, they have a rough and passionate sex in the dirt and later gradually become closer. When Martin suffers a second stroke, Johnny realizes the responsibility of running the farm falls entirely on his shoulders. He asks Gheorghe if he can stay with him and maintain the farm together, but Gheorghe believes if they cannot redefine their relationship, this plan will not survive. Johnny then gets upset and drinks to excess and has a random sex with another man, which is found out later by Gheorghe, so Gheorghe leaves the farm with sorrow and anger. But in the end, Johnny brings Gheorghe back and Gheorghe moves into the house from the original caravan.
The above description is about the British film God's Own Country, written and directed by Francis Lee in 2017, which won the world cinema directing award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival as the only UK-based production. This film is partly based on Lee's own experience, who is a gay people used to live in Yorkshire. As an uncommon gay film with a happy ending, God's Own Country expands queer media territory into the countryside and migrants. While God's Own Country presents a new perspective to view gay people, it also reinforces problematic narratives through its depiction of traditional masculinity, representation of migrant, and "normalization" of gay identity. With three main themes presented, this review post also discusses the connection between masculinity and gender performativity, migrant and intersectionality, and gay identity and homonormativity.
From the character setting, and storyline, to the environment, God's Own Country is permeated with a traditional and binary "masculinity". The protagonist, Johnny, is a young sheep farmer living in the Yorkshire countryside who often engages in binge drinking and furtive casual sex. When he finds the one he wants to stay with (Gheorghe), he messes up since he does not know how to deal with this romantic relationship. And when he tries to bring Gheorghe back, it seems very difficult for him to express his apology. The depiction of such character is easily connected to a kind of traditional "masculinity" that is unemotional, violent, strong, high self-esteem, etc. Or, to put it in another way, an aggressive young man lives in a wild farm who does now know how to start an emotional communication.
Judith Butler (2006) argues that "there is no gender identity behind the expressions of gender; that identity is performatively constituted by the very 'expressions' that are said to be its results" (p. 34). In other words, "our gender is our expressions and behaviours (rather than those expressions and behaviours being the result of some underlying gender identity)" (Barker & Scheele 2016, p.79). People's gender then is more like an expression that is believed to be appropriate and correct within their cultural environment rather than a fixed nature within their bodies. In this sense, the masculinity of Johnny is more like an "intelligible" way to perform within his condition - a young sheep farmer in the countryside. The "good" thing may be Johnny, as a gay man, is not depicted in a stigmatized or stereotypical way that happens in many shows, but its depiction seems to reinforce the binary understanding of gender.

God's Own Country was released in 2017, which coincides UK's attempt of withdrawing from the European Union. Gheorghe, as a Romanian migrant worker in the film echoes the issue of migrants in Britain. Both as gay men, the nation, race, and class of Gheorghe is quite different from that of Johnny. Such demographic factors are greatly influencing the way Gheorghe interacts with Johnny who is a white, work-class, native British. When they first met, Johnny called Gheorghe a "gypsy". Later when they are in the bar, a white racist there also deliberately teases Gheorghe because of his identity.
Intersectionality refers to the overlapping of social categorization and how it is linked to the interconnected oppression. Doty (1993) also argues that cultural factors such as "class, ethnicity, gender, occupation, education, and religious, national, and regional allegiances influence our identity construction" and "can exert influences difficult to separate from the development of our identities queers" (p. 5). Although Gheorghe's identity of being gay does not bring him too much direct discrimination in the film, his race and class affect how he interact with Johnny and other people (such as the white racist in the bar mentioned above). And Gheorghe's conflict with Johnny is raised due to his identity, i.e. how Gheorghe as a Romanian migrant worker has a romantic gay relationship with a white, British farmer.
Moreover, how the film represents Gheorghe and his relationship with Johnny is also problematic. "The formal axe around which the film functions is the act of looking and being looked at, in particular the suspicious staring of the foreign 'outsider' by the white 'insider'" (Williams 2020, p.77). That is to say, the presentation of a Romanian migrant is from the viewpoint of a white British man. Although Gheorghe as a migrant seems to be depicted as the "savior" of British white man Johnny, Gheorghe's intersectional identity is actually not fully represented but more portrayed as the support or supplement of the main white character. For example, it is Gheorghe who saves Johnny from the heavy workload and mental loneliness, and teaches him how to "love" someone instead of just having brutal sex.
Unlike Brokeback Mountain (2005) or Boys Don't Cry (1999), queer characters do not struggle too much with their identity and social discrimination in God's Own Country. The gay identity of Johnny and Gheorghe seems to be very "natural" and "ordinary". Even when Deirdre, Johnny's Grandmother, finds a used condom in Johnny's room and realizes that her grandson may have sex with another man Gheorghe, she only emphasizes to Johnny that "he is only here to work". Johnny's family seems to accept their gay identity and relationship very well, or in another way, their gay identity and relationship are somehow "normalized" in the film. Furthermore, within their own relationship, Gheorghe is depicted as a gentle lover who is trying to tame his aggressive partner. And their relationship from the hostile beginning to the happy ending is very similar to traditional Hollywood romantic heterosexual films.
Homonormativity "is a politics that does not contest dominant heteronormative assumptions and institutions, but upholds and sustains them, while promising the possibility of a demobilized gay constituency and a privatized, depoliticized gay culture anchored in domesticity and consumption" (Duggan 2002, p. 50). In other words, although gay people may seem to be accepted and included in the mainstream or heteronormativity dominated system, they are actually framed and hidden under the heteronormativity and thus lose their identity. Although it may be good that the gay identity and relationship of Johnny and Gheorghe are treated as nothing special, the essence behind that may be the gay culture is depoliticized and thus loses its nature of being gay. Even gay couples may no longer be depicted as gay couples but heterosexual couples.
As an Asian, heterosexual college student, I may not be able to resonate with the film too much. Probably the scene where Gheorghe is discriminated against by a white racist can trigger some of the experiences around me. And although this film tells a story of a gay couple, the way this film puts their relationship yet is quite "familiar" to me, because of the last point I discussed above (homonormativity).
Originally, the explicit sex scene in this film makes me feel a little bit "awkward" and I feel like such scene is not very necessary. However, my knowledge in queer media studies makes me reconsider the role of sex in this film and I find that it is actually very "meaningful". Johnny used to be very aggressive in sex, but after the "tameness" of Gheorghe, Johnny gradually enjoys the touch and understands that there can be "love" (or emotion) in sex instead of just fulfilling the sexual needs. That is to say, the sex scene in this film actually sees the growth of a young man, the understanding of love, and the finding of oneself.

Review - Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker and Julia Scheele
So fun fact, this is not a book about the word queer or queer community. It’s a graphic novel explanation of academic Queer Theory.
Which I didn’t know when I picked it up, so I wanted to make that super clear. I just think the cover is a bit misleading. It had me thinking this was more of a generalist work when really its highly academic. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t read it though! Its a good introduction to Queer Theory. I just didn’t know beforehand.
I think Queer Theory works about as well as a graphic novel as it works as anything else. Queer Theory is DENSE and difficult to understand (at least for me) and the graphic format allowed for some visual representation of complex ideas. But there were also a lot of talking heads. Quite literally. Most queer theorists are shown with their most famous words in word bubbles above their heads.
In my opinion, some of the best parts are when we see real queer people either illustrating or repudiating some of this theory, particularly the parts where cis gay men love to speak for all of us in deliberately confusing language (*coughcoughLeeEdelmancough*). Barker and Scheele don’t let them skate on this, providing differing viewpoints and outright critiques. I liked that.
I also loved the way bisexuals are wholly and completely integrated into this book in a way I’ve never seen from a Queer Theory text. Even when the examples are not strictly about bisexuality, we are still included. There is a example that has nothing to do with bisexuality persay, but showed a researcher talking to bi communities, reading bi books, going to bi conferences, and HELPING BI PEOPLE. Seriously this panel almost made me cry. We never get this kind of consideration. Usually the best I hope for in general queer/LGBTQ nonfiction is to not have any blatant biphobia. I never hope for holistic inclusion. Meg-John Barker is bisexual and perhaps that is why this book lacks the usual unchallenged monosexism.
So if you’re looking for an introduction to Queer Theory that is bi-friendly, visually inclined, and about as accessible as this subject is ever going to get, I say pick this one up.

As soon as people awoke to the beauty of nature, they began to copy it, carving breasts into rocks and crafting cloth into petals. But the darkest chapter in the pantheon of flower making occurred ages after Sheba attempted to stump Solomon and centuries after ancient Chinese artists began creating lotus blossoms from silk scraps. [...] One London flower maker, a nineteen-year-old girl named Matilda Scheurer, died on November 20, 1861. Her death was widely publicized, and accounts of her illness ranged from credible to lurid. Yet we know that her final illness was “horrible,” writes the historian Alison Matthews David. “She vomited green waters; the whites of her eyes had turned green, and she told her doctor that ‘everything she looked at was green.” An autopsy confirmed that arsenic had reached her stomach, liver, and lungs—arsenic she inhaled while at work, dusting artificial leaves with green powder to make them appear more lifelike.
Scheele’s Green, the Color of Fake Foliage and Death, Katy Kelleher in The Paris Review (May 2 2018)
#katy kelleher#*mine#this article is very interesting--especially the last paragraph about the noxiousness of artificial green vs its eco-friendly symbolism

For Better or For Worse: Postnuptial Agreements and Intervention By the Court
Postnuptial understandings are an undeniably well known strategy for life partners to shield their riches from future cases from an isolated companion because of relationship breakdown. A postnuptial understanding is a type of marriage contract that is arranged and marked after the wedding with its motivation to reject and ensure resources or bolster commitments without, or notwithstanding, a prenuptial understanding.
A postnuptial understanding is another option and protect against real or affirmed pressure emerging when a marriage contract is marked excessively near an approaching wedding date. A postnuptial understanding can be drafted to correct a prenuptial understanding that may no longer mirror the gatherings' aims for money related courses of action upon marriage breakdown. You can check out our Lydia Moritz Lawyer Reviews for more details.
Numerous individuals accept these are standard understandings that can be drafted inexpensively and rapidly, yet these kinds of understandings require cautious and explicit drafting to mirror the gatherings' expectations, dealings between the gatherings with full monetary divulgence that incorporates valuations of benefits.
In Ontario a postnuptial understanding, similar to some other marriage contract, is dependent upon the legal necessities of Canada's Divorce Act and Ontario's Family Law Act.
It's imperative to realize that any residential understanding can be dependent upon intercession by the courts for any of an assortment of reasons.
Intercession by the Court – Spousal Support
There is expansive circumspection in the Divorce Act and subsections 33(4) and 56(4) of the Family Law Act to permit courts to arrange spousal help in spite of the presence of a substantial local understanding managing spousal help commitments. The standards coordinating a court regarding when to utilize its attentiveness to abrogate previous spousal help understandings require an assessment of various components as set out in: Miglin v. Miglin. That procedure makes it hard to anticipate when a spousal help understanding will meet those prerequisites.
Forestalling Enforcement that Would Lead to Unconscionable Results
The Ontario Court of Appeal verified that area 33(4) of the Family Law Act isn't coordinated to unreasonable understandings, however to unjustifiable aftereffects of an arrangement deferring support. An understanding that was reasonable and sensible when it was marked, may, through conditions that happen later on, bring about unseemly results at the hour of a help application: Scheel v. Henkelman.
Forestalling Enforcement of Unconscionable Agreements
Rather than subsection 33(4) of the Family Law Act, subsection 56(4) permits a court the attentiveness to put aside unreasonable understandings and systematizes the general law of agreement appropriate to unjustifiable understandings: Scheel v. Henkelman.
Intercession by the Court – Failure to Make Financial Disclosure
Alluding to area 56(4) of the Family Law Act, the Ontario Court of Appeal maintained the choice of a preliminary adjudicator to put aside a marriage contract in conditions where the spouse neglected to make total honesty of his huge resources. The court found that his exposure was fragmented and lacking, and his inability to make total honesty was a conscious endeavor to deceive his better half: LeVan v. LeVan.
Segment 56(4) doesn't permit the court to change a residential understanding by giving that it doesn't make a difference to specific resources.
In Moses Estate v. Metzer, the Ontario Court of Appeal held that a whole agreement or a segment can be saved however not revised:
[14] Section 56(4) of the Family Law Act allows a court to "put aside a residential agreement or an arrangement in it… " This considers putting aside an agreement or arrangement completely. It doesn't allow the court to, in actuality, change a household contract by giving that it doesn't make a difference to specific resources
Courts have reliably held that the legal obligation of revelation incorporates the presence of the critical resources, yet in addition their degree and worth. Inadequate exposure, regardless of whether consensual or honest, falls inside the ambit of segment 56(4).
Area 56(4)(a) has been found to incorporate a necessity for mates to uncover salary. A salary report arranged by a specialist is regularly fundamental for an independently employed companion. Before rights are given up the gathering must comprehend what they are surrendering. Such exposure is especially pertinent when the marriage contract tries to confine spousal help which may somehow or another be payable: LeVan v. LeVan, see additionally Virc v. Blair maintained by the Ontario Court of Appeal in Virc v. Blair.
Besides, involved with a marriage contract can't go into it knowing about the weaknesses in their revelation and afterward depend on those inadequacies as a premise to have the agreement saved: Butty v. Butty. At the end of the day, one gathering's non-exposure can never be utilized to help their own position.
