Rose (Flower) the Human

(I'm not well practiced with drawing humans by any means. I was initially going to hold off on drawing any scavengers until I get to Dragonslayer, but I think Rose is an important character in The Brightest Night that deserves a mention)

I don’t know why but there’s something sad about Dream’s Dairy still sitting in that chest in the corner of the cell (with pages 2 & 3 being blank for some reason)…

Like a piece of him will always remain in the cell… perhaps we can go even further and say that the note about Steve represents the attachments Dream can never have, highlighted by the death of the cat and Rat on that very chest. And the other note refers to the house and home that he can’t have, not if he wants to be safe. Maybe the book lying alone in the cell represents the things he lost to end up there, an attachment like Spirit, a home like the Community House. And maybe for funzies we could say the blank pages represent other things missing: his friends and his lives… I don’t know, it makes me think too about him writing other dairies and burning them all… maybe he couldn’t bring himself to burn this one… the last piece of Techno he has left…

I will do anything for humans to not be centric in arc 4. I was fine with their inclusion in arc 3 but do not give them a bigger role...... one of my favorite things abt wof was the lack of humans

@maze-of-my-design making a separate post since it's diverged somewhat from the original point of that post but also. grips your shoulders. it's the social expectation of it all it's the trying to find some anchor in the middle of her grief it's the elevating Joker on a pedestal and modeling herself after him once she stops trying so hard to model herself after Kasumi it's the "when you admire someone of the opposite gender you get a crush on them, right? that's how that works" it's the arc of learning to accept Sumire for who she is as opposed to who she thinks she should be. I need to finish that fic

God the fucking parallels between Kamen/Fiona and Hollow/Levi are driving me insane

Fiona helps create Levi, treating them with compassion and even giving them her voice

Fiona sacrifices everything to join Kamen on the Demeter 227 in a desperate attempt to salvage their marriage

Kamen, through negligence and selfishness, destroys Fiona

Hollow controls Kamen by feeding him images of Fiona and tormenting him with memories of all the ways he failed her

Kamen gives in to his guilt and lets Hollow consume him

Hollow, while carrying Kamen, purposefully destroys Levi

Levi comes back changed, filled with organic material and able to experience physical and emotional sensation

Kamen realizes he wants to live, he wants to do right by Fiona even though she’s gone

Levi destroys the overgrown form of Hollow, reducing it to its original form and freeing Kamen from its control

Levi goes on to live independently, working symbiotically with the environment of Vesta

Kamen helps create and sustain the new human colony

hearing wof discourse can be a very mixed bag but one sentiment ive seen a lot is the agonizingly powerful hatred towards humans/scavengers. I have never seen anyone say they have a favorite character and follow up with a scavenger. I’ve seen people discuss how much they want to put them through victorian-child-killing-antics. I’m convinced the fandom wants there to be a scorching 2

personally, I’m not really interested in the humans who exist in a dragon series but I hope arc four is pantala-pyrrhia relations driven instead of human driven. I would find it really bizarre if the Invincible Lord or whatever his name was rolls up and gets treated like an actual threat. “OH NO! ITS THE INVINCIBLE LORD!” like just get a dragon to lay on him, problem solved.

Scavenger’s Reign is phenomenal

One issue I personally have with WOF that I don't see brought up often is the tonal inconsistencies. It's especially noticeable in TFoH for me. Freedom felt like a tonal mess because one second she'd be explaining how she had been trapped with her tormentor for five thousand years and the next she'd be making some qUiRkY quip or joke. Idk, just something I noticed

Yeah it's really quite annoying. In the ladder half of arc 3 I feel it's most apparent. One chapter it'll be a baby babbling to themselves or CAPS LOCK SCREAMING and the next it'll be "I have been in unimaginable amounts of pain and suffering and there is no way for me to escape" before then going instantly back to something else.

Freedom is such a messy character in of itself. You can't introduce a character like her halfway through the last book, spend most of her screentime having her yell at Luna and Dusky, then suddenly make her character do a 180 after seeing Gay People and want to be good now. Yeah yeah "oh it's so sad that she gave herself up for the greater good" and all but like...she's not a great character.

I think it's mostly because it seems like Tui is really burnt out on WoF. Like she gets bored constantly and tries to add in jokes or hold down a single key for a bit longer than she should. It really is quite jarring when it's all silly and wacky before then instantly being hit against with a character calling somebody a "bozo".
