Hope you don't mind me spamming you a bit. I appreciate your reviews and commentary! Other movies that came to mind which I enjoyed were Ready Or Not, The Invitation, Don't Breathe, Black Christmas, Last Night inSoho (technically this is a horror movie). And because it's popular, what are your thoughts on A Quiet Place?
I don't mind one bit. These are fun questions, especially this one. Buckle up lmaoooo.
Ready or Not - I liked it, and it inspired the wedding dress in one of my darker stories.
The Invitation - Hell yes, love a dark dinner party movie. Won't spoil why.
Don't Breathe - Loved. So depraved. If you haven't seen it I won't spoil, but holy shit lol. Kink alert.
Black Christmas - Yes! Prefer the original by a mile, but enjoyed the Blumhouse take too.
Last Night in Soho - Need to see this, it's on my list.
A Quiet Place -Just my passionate opinion: I fear there is no movie I despise more. My disdain is well-known among irl friends. I'm about to go off.
Krasinski referring to his film as "elevated horror" put him on my bad side from the start. Really low to put down others to promote himself. Dismissing an entire diverse genre, disrespecting everyone who paved the way.
Krasinski gets (takes) far too much credit for things that have been done and done better, including the climax which mirrors The Descent Part 2, shot-for-shot. Don't Breathe is another example of the have-to-be-quiet premise.
Huge hit among non-horror fans who didn't know better and raved about its originality. Meanwhile gushing, "I'm not even into horror." Soo maybe they hadn't seen much? Especially lesser known movies. The horror tent is big enough for all, but he brought new fans into it while infusing them with his condescending attitude.
Far too many gratuitous close-ups of himself going 🤫. This man's ego, stg.
Some of us detected a strong whiff of right-wing energy. Pro-life in a risk everyone's lives for a fetus way. Pro-gun in a rural, white, get off my land way (btw I'm obsessed with John Wick. it's not the use of guns in this, it's the energy).
He bragged about how his wife was so unaffected by her most intense scene (childbirth) that after it she said, "Who's ready for lunch?" Why is that so good, John? Is your view as a director that actors should snap in and out of character and not be affected by their roles? If she needed to cry or rest, would he think less of her? Personally I admire people who feel. Also, harder to imagine paying a man the same compliment.
I have one nice thing to say, which is that it's nice to see deaf/hard-of-hearing representation, and it was the least they could do good to cast an actress from the community as his daughter.👍
If they committed to total silence instead of using a dramatic score, that would've been cool.
You can do your own take on an old concept and make it good. But to meanwhile put down everything else to distinguish/promote himself?? That ain't it.
Anyway, I still hate-watched the sequel (not nearly as bad) and may do the same with the prequel 🤪.

I painted a book box I've had for a very long time. It may not be to the same standard as Rick Perry and the art department, but I'm proud of it
@quiddie please enjoy your and Lou's legacy ;)

I really do believe that any devastating queer horror film worth it's salt that breaks into the mainstream should have just as many one star reviews from confused cis people as it does five star reviews from people saying it changed their life

Your headcanons on HIM’s diner: who goes there from the main cast, its star rating, HIM’s customer service, if HIM hires, etc.
Ahhhhh, the good ol' Otto Time Diner!
Tumblr media
I'd love to hear your headcanons because, honestly, my only headcanon is that Him basically created the diner for the whole bit of messing with the girls that one day and shut down the restaurant after like two or three days. ...maybe he kept it open a bit longer and started giving people food poisoning for fun, but I just think he eventually got bored of it.

Art delayed due to me losing my glasses in a freak go karting accident. I'm not kidding, I am so blind without my glasses, and I only have my prescription sunglasses now.
Here's what I was working on, and very much intend to finish once I have new glasses.
Tumblr media
This is referencing the classic baphomet pose, btw. I guess you can also see my current process with this? I've been working with lighter to darker colours, making the shapes cleaner as I go. It also means the colours look nice.
I am furious that I can't currently do the cross hatching I like, without my glasses. I have to be literally 10cm from the pages to draw accurately. Literally FINALLY got to a point in which I'm happy with an art piece, and now I CANT DRAW IT.

After today's (yesterday's) Midnight Society Pals post, I naturally looked up Mr. Maugham's "The Magician," and-
Tumblr media
Aleister, please tell me that you didn't accuse him of plagiarizing this review. That you wrote of his book. Please tell me that you, O great accuser that you are, claimed that he plagiarized something else. Something that was actually written BEFORE Maugham wrote "The Magician."
I'm gonna get through Crowley's entire literary canon, fiction and nonfiction, by hell or high water, so I'll have an answer EVENTUALLY (been too busy for much research lately), but. Mister Perdurabo Sir. The bar is on the floor.

Do you have prompts for friends dancing in a grand ball and just having a good time in general?
I read way too much Austen for class so oh boy do I ever have you covered
There's actually quite a lot of talking that happens during the dances, so they can be sharing jokes and gossiping about what other people are wearing.
If you're wanting a more traditional ball structure, the amount of times people danced together could be very telling. Dancing with the same person multiple times was a sign of romantic interest, so the two friends are trying to balance hanging out with each other while dancing with not being viewed as anything more.
Or you could move into a fake dating plotline.
There might be games set up for those who don't want to dance, aren't socially expected to dance, or are simply unable to. The characters could spend the time playing games.
Interestingly, refusing a dance with someone was essentially saying you weren't going to dance at all, so A swoops in and claims that B has already accepted their offer to dance earlier and is thus unable to dance with C. Additionally, you can throw in snobbery, finery, and passive aggressiveness where needed. Balls were important social events as much as they were for fun, so outright snubbing someone could make for an interesting turn of events, or the characters could test the limits of how far they could go with veiled comments before they get caught.

cannot stop thinking about supply chains and I think my brother is getting a little tired of hearing about it but lo and behold, we visit my uncle and it turns out he’s obsessed with Great Lakes freighters and he showed me his little books about freighters and his photos he takes and a calendar he made with pictures of freighters and we talked about shipping and the local industries up here and his favorite boats and all. I do not think our politics align like 85% of the time but we were on perfectly synchronized wavelengths for the moment
