maria marionette is surprised. even if she wears cute, girlish clothes, she’ll be the first to admit that her body type is a straight rectangle without curves of any sort. it hasn’t really been an insecurity of hers, but it made her think it wasn’t really possible to draw or photograph her in a desirable light when she’s just too cute so she really appreciates your art showing herself in a different perspective. 

kyo kaneko is flabbergasted. his jaw remains unhinged as he stares at the pages in some strange mixture of disgust and fascination, eyes moving from you and the sketches at a cartoonish pace. he’s not completely against it, but you’re really using him as a reference for anatomy practice? him? the crayola twink with an ass flatter than paper? he’ll probably tell you to stop drawing him naked and put your skills towards commissions instead because he knows you could make a decent amount of money with your talents.

aia amare is amused. she’ll cut them out or at least copy them to hang up in her room, probably at her desk area where she works. it’s nothing too strange to her, she’s probably drawn you in suggestive poses as well— hell, she’s probably drawn you heavily pregnant with her child as a joke regardless if you are male or female. if you want, she’ll even give you advice on how to improve your anatomy and claim you draw her tits too small.

aster arcadia is flustered. his pale face is comically red from the tip of his nose to the shell of his ears, yet he still won’t let you pull it away from him as he flips through the pages. the type to run around and jump onto furniture to prevent you from taking back the sketchbook, he just wants to keep staring at them because he’s in awe of the way you managed to capture his androgyny. 

scarle yonaguni is flattered. a mix of aia and aster’s reactions, she’ll also want to keep her own copies of your drawings of her and will play a lengthy game of keep-away because she isn’t ready to part with them yet. she’ll hang them in her bedroom as a reminder of how sexy she is in your eyes, giving her a confidence boost every morning when she wakes up. will offer to do nude modeling for you, but if you actually take her up on her offer, she’ll end up getting too embarrassed and antsy to stay still in such a vulnerable state under your gaze.

ren zotto is nonchalant. he’s the most normal about it all, probably didn’t even register what you were doing until he noticed you acting strange about it so he did a double-take. will point at the paper and say something like “my dick doesn’t look at like, that— i thought you out of anyone would know that” with his iconic fuckboy laugh as you sputter that it was just a sketch and you weren’t done yet.

Review: A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Synopsis: A Study in Scarlet was written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1887. This is  the first of the Sherlock Holmes books. The novel starts out with Dr. Watson meeting Sherlock Holmes for the first time. They decide to rent rooms at  221B Baker Street together. While living together, Dr. Watson becomes fascinated with Sherlock Holmes and his knowledge of deduction. Soon Dr. Watson follows Sherlock Holmes on a case where a man is found murdered in an empty house. Sherlock Holmes quickly solves the case and we find out the backstory of the murder; a tale of love and revenge.

Storyline: In the beginning of this novel we see the start of the friendship between Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes, which I loved and found very interesting. Then we got the discovery of the crime and the solving of it by Sherlock Holmes. That I enjoyed as well. It seemed like a typical, cozy Sherlock Holmes mystery. Then the unexpected happened. We got the backstory of the murder, which involved the American West and early Mormons. That setting caught me completely off guard, as it was so random for the first Sherlock Holmes book. Not what I would have expected! Once I got over my surprise however, I actually really liked the backstory. It added emotional depth to an otherwise cold murder case. The result was a well rounded detective story that I got a lot out of.

Setting: A Study in Scarlet is set partly in Victorian London and partly in the American West (in Utah for much of the time). The London setting was cozy and enjoyable as expected. The American West setting besides being completely random in a Victorian Novel, was actually done quite well.

Characters: The characters were great in A Study in Scarlet. Dr. Watson is a great narrator and I liked seeing his bafflement at and yet admiration for Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes is an iconic character and will forever be my favorite detective. His powers of deduction and analysis will always be fascinating to me. I loved the characters in the backstory as well. I emotionally felt for them, which is not something I would expect in a Sherlock Holmes mystery. I even greatly sympathized with the murderer, which is unusual for me.

Did I Like It?: I loved it! This was such a well rounded story and mystery. I felt so satisfied at the end. I have read most of the Sherlock Holmes books, and I’m glad I finally picked the first one up. I still think The Hound of the Baskervilles is my favorite as it’s more what I would expect from a Sherlock Holmes novel,  but A Study in Scarlet is now a close second favorite.

Do I Recommend This?: Yes! If you have never read any Sherlock Holmes books, I suggest you do! You don’t really have to read them in order, but if you want to this is a good one even if it does get a little random. Sherlock Holmes books are must reads if you like mysteries or Victorian literature.
