I know that you mostly post about the Temu Royals but I am finding the new communications strategy of the Waleses to be quite interesting. They invited an amateur photographer, Liz, a young woman with cancer to take the photos at the investiture William did today, Catherine was there too but unannounced.
It seems to me they’re trying to keep thigh control over their social media while appearing more “approachable” but leaving the RR in the dark.
What do you think of it?
Quick little disclaimer first: I don’t want to be posting mostly or only about the Sussexes. I would rather actually not be posting about them as much as I do but I don’t get a lot of asks about other happenings in the BRF. I’m thinking about taking some longer breaks as we get into my busy season at work because this is too much Sussex.
I like the new media approach. I feel like it’s something William and Kate have wanted for a very long time - to have more control over how they’re covered. Not in a censorship kind of way, but more in a
putting “mystique” back in “royal mystique, or drawing a very sold, very defined line between what the public can access and their privacy. - so when everyone blew their top about simple edits to a family photo, they decided to take advantage of the moment.
The rota to me is a double-edged sword. On one side, they’re responsible for covering the royal family and providing information about them to their public. But on the other hand, they’re a money-making for-profit endeavor. They will only ever always cover the royals in ways that makes them, or their bosses, money. Meaning controversy, scandal, secrets, and gossip sell better than standard straightforward reporting - aka, the Court Circular.
The second part of it is the intrusiveness and pervasiveness of media today. First, the pervasiveness: the 24/7 media cycle has entitled the public to demand constant coverage of all newsmakers (politicians, athletes, musicians, actors, royals, etc.) to justify their interest in them. Because the public demands constant coverage, it’s similarly entitled, and enabled, the press - especially the rota - to demand to be in the newsmakers’ spaces. They believe it’s their job to be constantly present and they enforce their presence with controversy, scandal, secrets, and gossip under the guise of “informing the public.”
Then second, the intrusiveness: the use of social media has entitled the public and press to not only demand inclusion in the newsmakers’ private non-public spaces, but also to offer commentary and criticism over those spaces and that portion of their lives.
So because of that pervasiveness and intrusiveness, the lines between private and public and between fact-based reporting and opinion editing has blurred, and blurred so badly that it’s nonexistent. It probably didn’t help to have royals like Charles, Diana, Camilla, Andrew, Sarah, Harry, Meghan, and Eugenie running to talk to the media every single time they were offended or wanted attention. (And it also didn’t help that some reporters were hacking phones either.) Because certain senior royals were friendlier with the press, it ushered in an era of open transparency that enabled the public and the press - including the rota - to demand identical access and transparency from all royals in their personal lives/personal relationships - William and Kate especially.
After all, look what happened when Kate asked for privacy and needed some time to recover from a major surgery in hospital; the public and the press demanded she show herself and when she didn’t, it became controversy and scandal and the gossip proliferated in an attempt to force her out, and members of the rota were actively participating in that too.
Anyway. All this to say that KP’s new media strategy of disengaging with the rota to communicate directly to the public themselves using their own channels is good. I think so, at least.
The rota has gotten too big for its britches, in a way, especially if they felt emboldened to criticize Kate’s desire for privacy to convalesce from major surgery - and then a shocking cancer diagnosis - in private. They’ve needed reform for a long time, since the mid-90s-ish (when the 24/7 media cycle first became problematic (and I have theories on that too which I’m happy to discuss if anyone else wants)), which Harry was right to want and work towards.
Except Harry’s vision for reforming the rota and the monarchy’s relationship with the press was, essentially, censorship and autocratic control (ie “print only what I tell you to print and nothing else”), effective immediately. William’s solution seems to be more baby steps; letting the rota still have most of their access to do most of their work, but removing their ability to cover certain private or personal events (eg the birthday photos) and occasional work engagements (eg this latest investiture), then hopefully being able to scale that up to where the rota is actually doing their job to report on the monarchy, vs generating controversy or scandal to sell headlines. I do hope that William’s plan to modernize the monarchy’s media strategy means that he will diversify the rota and open it up to more publications and more new media - including from the realms, instead of letting traditional Fleet Street publications/tabloids hold the monopoly (because I do think that power has gone to all their heads, and I do agree with Scobie on Endgame that leadership of the rota needs to be on a rotating term basis, instead of always permanently Rebecca English).
I do think yesterday’s investiture where there was no media but the one photographer was probably a one-off event, perhaps along the lines of “make a wish” (but not really; I do think the Waleses felt for Liz and really wanted to give her/her family special, happy moments after having dealt with their own similar challenges this year.)
Personally for me, I don’t think there’s much to comment on about whether all future investitures will be embargoed or press-restricted until/unless it happens again because once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence, thrice is a pattern.

rating all NuWho finales based entirely on how cool the titles are
because yea
(putting a read more because this will take a while, lol)
Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5/10. Bad Wolf is a cool name! For cool ppl! It’s the season’s mystery! It slays! But The Parting of the Ways? That could be used for like, half of the finales in this show. That’s a generic name. Not a fan. It even has one more “the” than it ought to. That’s a tryhard name. (Rose and The Doc don’t even part ways for another season! It’s a LIE!)
Army of Ghosts / Doomsday
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10. Army of Ghosts! That’s freaky! It catches my attention! I’m interested, Mr. Davies, tell me more about that! Doomsday is also a generic name though. Like it could be used anywhere. It gets more points than S1 however because Doomsday is a very cool word and I like it a lot.
Utopia / The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10. YES. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THESE TITLES. Utopia? That’s a word that can’t be applied to many other episodes! That’s a memorable word! That’s a fun word! The Sound of Drums? What the hell is so significant about drums?? In a FINALE episode?! There must be something SCANDALOUS about the drums, tell me everything! (And they did! But this isn’t about what happens in the episode this is just how hard the titles fuck.) Last of the Time Lords??? Holy shit! That means we’re delving into that aspect of him specifically, and you can’t duplicate that easily! But more importantly, that sounds cool! Cool names, absolutely W from whoever named RTD’s stuff.
The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5.5/10. Same boat as S1, tbh. The Stolen Earth? Excellent, no notes. Journey’s End sounds generic af though. But I gave it a half point lead because Journey’s End has the Vibes more than The Parting of the Ways, lol.
The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10. Yea I see the vision Mr. Moffat, I see you. Love what you’ve done with the place btw. Like, neither title is generic! And both are super interesting! Look honestly I forget how to do commentary I’m just one sleep deprived fan who likes Vibes they just slap OK
The Wedding of River Song
Tumblr media
9/10. Oh. Oh yes. Oh I am LOVING this. Nothing gets me going like seeing a wedding that is somehow the culmination of a high stakes season. Like, how is there a wedding there?! And. River Song is there? Do you promise? đŸ„ș
The Name of the Doctor / The Day of the Doctor / The Time of the Doctor
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6/10. OK I’m honestly not sure which ones are finales or not, but y’know what? The name matching is fun. I like that. That is good. But besides the first one, these are p generic episode names. Sorry.
Dark Water / Death in Heaven
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8/10. Dark Water is a p good episode name. It’s not the most interesting, but I like it. BUT ***DEATH IN HEAVEN***?! Now THAT is a finale title! I have never SEEN such a title! THAT is an IMMACULATE title! SPLENDID!
Heaven Sent / Hell Bent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10/10. The matching names? The rhyming? The low-key religious theming? The ominous nature? EXCELLENT. No notes Mr. Moffat. Great vibes.
World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9/10. I would give this striaght up 10/10 if I could figure out what “World Enough and Time” meant. The vibes are perfect but like. What does it mean 😭 And The Doctor Falls??? OH MY ATTENTION HAS BEEN GRABBED BY THE THROAT DO GO ON PLS—
The Battle of Ranskoor av Kolos
Tumblr media
4/10. Kolos? What is this, PokĂ©mon XY? Anyways, I feel like this is just dialogue that would be said in passing in a sci-fi novel that everyone forgets. Sorry 😞
Ascension of the Cybermen / The Timeless Children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/10. Cybermen are OK. It’s a fine title, I have nothing against it. The Timeless Children??? The vibes are just SPLENDID here. Especially because it’s a Bad Wolf situation where it’s like “hey wait a fucking minute I’ve heard that somewhere else—” Good stuff! W for Chris.
Chapter Six: The Vanquishers
Tumblr media
6.5/10. Adding chapter to the title does make it automatically cooler, so that’s a bonus half point right there. Otherwise, it’s neat. Like it’s good. The vibes are fine and I like them, but not THAT fine, y’know?
The Legend of Ruby Sunday / Empire of Death
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7/10. Look, even if it’s not generic, anything with “death” in the title *feels* generic. The Legend of Ruby Sunday still saves this tho, because I am INTERESTED, girl. TELL ME EVERYTHING
In conclusion, episode titles peaked with Capaldi.

there was a time in the drag race fandom around 2015-2018 when a lot of teenagers got into it because of season 7 and they all started writing fan fiction about the queen's drag personas fucking each other but then would get really grossed out & scandalized when the queens talked about their actual sex life. things like sniffing pits, leather stuff, fisting, things gay men in nightlife scenes tend to enjoy. i don't really have anything to add or insightful commentary it was just really funny every time it happened lol

something i wish people highlighted more wtih bigb is how utterly disloyal he is! constantly, underlying all of his actions, he is disloyal!
that got a lot of attention in last life with cleo, his day one ally. yeah he didnt want to turn against her... but he did. he was willing to sacrifice her for his own gain, and it was VERY satisfying when she got him out.
but this has persisted in every season, which i havent seen anyone point out! double life? oh he loves being soulmates with ren, but when grian comes along... they're having secret meetings in the moonlight and trading baked goods. ren's heartbroken when he finds out, buuut it gets swept under the rug when they turn red, buuuuuut bigb and gri are still meeting. red-b doesn't lay a finger on not-red-gri, and it is so ironic that grian was the one to get him out.
limited life- god, limlife was my favorite season. the NOSY. NEIGHBORS. surprise thats what this post is really about. pearl and bigb's relationship is so, so so, so so so so so good.
when cleo tells pearl not to trust bigb, that if he's boogey he would betray pearl in a second? HE WOULD. his first loyalty is to himself, and he openly states when pearlizzy gets boogeyman that he wouldn't tell pearl if he was. (though, in pearl's commentary... if pearl really had the reins, she might not have told him, either?) he isn't entirely loyal. he doesn't say he would kill her, but, yknow.
which makes it so fascinating that his partner is pearl of all people, because she is constantly, fiercely loyal, in past seasons and in this one. jimmy tells bigb to see judge judy alone, and pearl insists the nosy neighbors come as a pair, and secretly follows them to make sure b's ok. pearl tells bigb to take the 30 minutes for the trap she's making because she wants him to win. pearl does everything she can for b.
and bigb likes her, of course. pearlizzy says "and my best friend..." and bigb follows with "is me!" but while bigb never ended up betraying pearl, but he almost did. episode 7, grian and joel invite him into the bad boys to replace jimmy, which he instantly accepts but asks them not to tell pearl. if they asked pearl, she'd reject them in a heartbeat, i can already hear her "i'm not leaving my buddy"! bigb, though, didn't even try to invite pearl to the bread boys! the reason this never turned into a big scandal like past seasons was because... well, joel was on death's door, and grian thought it best to just become a new nosy neighbor. bigb didn't get a big moment out of this, and you know how end-of-season alliances get crazy! this was short, and people forgot! but ohoho i didn't. (<-lying)
secret life? oh lord. he was alone and lying til the heart foundation picked him up, and he lies there too! he keeps banning people from the foundation and claiming that skizz and tango said to, and he does this for no reason. he works with martyn in episode 7 for like two minutes, and then both of them stab each other in the back. when bigb scott and cleo are hiding from the boogeys, bigb... tries to give them away? for some reason?
though, also... his task was to help red lives one session, which got skizz hurt by tim. but... when his task was complete, he protected skizz! bigb stabbed tim which scared him off when he was chasing skizz!! skizz thought that he stabbed tim himself, and bigb didn't correct him, so i assume neither of them noticed, but like he did. he was loyal here. given past trends i am so excited to see where secret life ends. will bigb break the cycle or continue the prophecy?!
"wait" i hear you say, "what about 3l?" i havent seen bigb's 3l.
conclusion: WATCH BIGBST4TZ2. nobody is doing it like him and one day i will make a full propaganda post. "but you insulted him so much" I WANT TO STUDY HIM UNDER A MICROSCOPE OK he does wrong things and it fascinates me and it can fascinate you too. thank you goodnight

okay finding a swiftie and scandal/olitz blog just made me super happy and now i need your season rankings and scandal hot takes
omgggggggg I am very excited to answer this. I am obsessed with this show rn. disclaimer: I am a huge fitz stan and will defend him in almost every situation but I try to be rational I promise. that man is crack for me. I feel like shonda studied my brain before writing him.
rankings first:
season 3 > season 2 > season 1 > season 5 > season 4 (would’ve been top three without the fuckass kidnapping plot > season 7 > ninth circle of hell > season 6
now my hot takes. I typed this up after I finished the show for the first time about a month ago (I’m rewatching rn). I’ll put a cut bc I don’t wanna bother y’all
- this goes without saying but I love fitz. I enjoyed his character thoroughly throughout the show and he never really did anything to annoy me. he gets a LOT of shit but does the least egregious things out of all the characters except mellie. I will defend every single one of his actions and he gets a lot more interesting when he grows a backbone instead of acting like a human ping pong ball that his wife, mistress, and chief of staff use (so after his son dies and his mistress leaves him to go be on an island because idk. reasons). he needs to get up though. post-rewatch update: he’s not a ping pong ball at all. he is manipulative as hell and idk how I couldn’t see it during first watch. however, he’s also a great president and generally i do believe that he’s a sincere, warm romantic who gets gradually corrupted by his time in office especially during his second term. he is super warm and supportive towards the end though. the scene in season 7 where he tells olivia that he sees the old her again even though she doesn’t made me cry.
- this brings me to mellie. I adore her until she’s president. she is one of the best developed characters in the series (even though I think the rape plot could’ve been done better bc it was clearly not planned/later shoehorned in). her presidency was built up for six seasons only for her to whine about girl power, deserving a presidency she was never elected for, and wanting to get laid. at least fitz was actually in love with olivia. meanwhile Mellie is now a doormat bc ??? this is really Shonda’s fault bc you can tell trump being elected threw a wrench in her plans. also the feminist speeches are so bad. ‘shattering glass ceilings’ okay cut your hair into a hillary clinton bob while you’re at it. the modern day political commentary is a bit much during the latter half of the show as a whole but I digress.
- this brings me to olivia. I always root for her even when she annoys the shit out of me. Kerry Washington is an incredible actress with boatloads of charisma (same as Tony). sometimes she’s entirely irrational but everyone worships the ground she walks on anyway until season 7, where she does one bad thing and gets crucified for it. unpopular opinion but I enjoyed the dark olivia arc and her ultimate redemption. she’s kinda horrible a lot post-kidnapping but no one gives a shit because everyone loves her which can be frustrating until they all do too much to ice her out in s7 (except fitz bc he’s fitz).
- everyone on this show has daddy issues. every single person. olivia’s daddy issues are interesting but they’re never resolved
- papa pope is incredibly inconsistent. sometimes he will send a man to his daughter’s bed. other times he will kill her boyfriend’s son because he took his child from her (????). really he ruins her psychologically for multiple seasons but gets away with it because she kills one innocent person and he crawls to fitz to save her (??????)
- jake was my third favorite character until season 7. they butchered him at that point. shonda makes it exceedingly clear that Olivia will never choose him but it’s a bit much sometimes. his ending is also horrible and undeserved
- the ending in general is ????? we deserved a little more than a damn hi. why did David die. why did Cyrus get away with everything. also ik that portrait scene is supposed to be powerful but it doesn’t make a ton of sense. also papa pope gets away with everything because the senators are worried about the optics of being controlled by a black man. also the whole ‘papa pope was the mastermind behind everyone and everything because he could manipulate people’ thing was very tired
- Shonda does not understand her own characters because wdym Cyrus Beene isn’t a villain? Maybe in the first few seasons when he’s loyal to fitz but after? he’s the worst person in season 7
- I love Quinn and Charlie. I mostly enjoy huck but we needed closure about his damn family. I love abby too but her ending was also meh.
- overall I very much enjoyed the show even when it annoyed me and made no sense
- the scandal subreddit watches an entirely different show based on the conclusions they draw. one thing we agree on is that the ending sucks.

From attacking each other online to attacking fellow bar patrons, it’s been another busy week for the stars/former stars of the ‘Teen Mom’ franchise! In an effort to bring you up-to-date on the latest Teen Mom OG and Teen Mom 2 news, The Ashley brings you the Teen Mom News Pile.
Here are some of the major (and minor but interesting) ‘Teen Mom’-related things that happened over the last week or so

Jenelle Evans & Farrah Abraham Basically Accuse Each Other Of Being Bad Parents
It’s been a minute since we’ve had a Jenelle/Farrah battle on The Interwebs, but this week, the Backdoor Teen Mom and the Lady ‘o’ The Land took a few swipes at each other via Instagram!
The online tiff began when Farrah debuted her new romantic victim partner on Instagram. Her haters speculated in the post’s comment section that her new beau was likely a “John”. When one person suggested that Farrah left her teen daughter Sophia home alone for Thanksgiving to go frolic in the Caribbean with her new man/thing, another person suggested that Child Protective Services (CPS) be called on Farrah.
Farrah responded to the comment by screenshotting it and replying with her signature “Farrah Speak” word salad commentary— which also included an out-of-nowhere dig at Jenelle.
“It’s possible to have it all haters,” Farrah wrote. “Fix your mindset. CPS is so JanelleEvans
haters are very confused.”
As The Ashley previously told you, Janelle Jenelle and her husband David Eason are currently under CPS investigation for various things. Jenelle did not appreciate Farrah taking a swipe at her, causing her to pounce on Farrah later that day online.
(The Ashley is leaving in the misspelled word to preserve the “Jenelle Speak” of the message.)
“Someone do a wellfare check on Farrah Abraham’s daughter,” Jenelle wrote. “Her mom seems very unstable in her videos online.”
The next day, Jenelle jumped on social media to further defend her own parenting.
“I’m not trying to prove myself to anyone
it’s really not that serious,” she said with a laugh. “I keep seeing comments like, ‘Take care of your kids, worry about your kids!’ Every single day, 24/7 that’s all I’m doing. Just because I don’t have a camera stuck in my face anymore and you guys don’t see every scope and aspect of my life, doesn’t mean that I don’t take care of my children.”
“Y’all are so worried about my life, yet you want me to stop posting,” she continued. “Yet you still want to know more. It’s very contradicting. The Internet is very contradicting.
“You post something online about your kids and they’re like, ‘Don’t do that, you’re exploiting them.’ And then if you don’t post them, you’re conceited. So which one is it? Do I take care of them? Or do I not take care of them? I guess we’ll never know.”
Farrah has yet to respond to Jenelle’s statement.
Mackenzie McKee Addresses Racist Comments She Gets For Dating a Black Man; Says She’s Tired of Her & Boyfriend Kheesy Hall Being Compared to Leah Messer & Jaylan Mobley
Former ‘Teen Mom OG’ star Mackenzie McKee took to TikTok recently to respond to social media comments she has received from people comparing her relationship with boyfriend Khesanio “Khessy” Hall to Leah Messer’s relationship with former fiancé Jaylan Mobley.
As The Ashley previously told you, Mackenzie and Kheesy are slated to appear on the upcoming season of ‘Teen Mom Family Reunion,’ despite Mackenzie getting the boot from ‘Teen Mom OG’ years ago following a racism scandal that ultimately played out on the show.
Like Leah and Jaylan–- who got engaged in August 2022 after a year of dating, but went on to split just two months later–- Mackenzie and Khessy are in an interracial relationship, but according to Mackenzie, that is the only similarity between the two couples.
“Let’s talk about this comment because you are NOT the first person who has said that, we actually get this comment a lot,” Mackenzie said while referencing the comparison comment on her screen. “Now, [Khessy] does not know the ‘Teen Mom’ cast, so he doesn’t know anyone’s story, but there are so many ‘Teen Mom’ couples that have come and gone. [Leah and Jay] is the only one that people ‘compare’ us to. It has nothing to do with our story, it has nothing to do with anything.”
Mackenzie went on to note that she was married (to ex-husband Josh McKee) for a decade, so her relationship with Khessy is the first time fans have seen her in a serious relationship with someone else, seemingly hinting at her disappointment by some people’s reaction to it.
“
I find my literal soulmate, I find someone that you guys have seen–- we’ve been in a relationship for a year–-
and this is nothing against [Jaylan and Leah], I love Leah, but no one is saying why they are comparing us,” she said. “They don’t want to admit why that is the one couple that they are comparing us to.”
Mackenzie went on to claim that “so many of the comments” she’s received since she began dating Khessy have also criticized her dancing skills, the music she listens to and her decision to wear her hair in French braids. She stated that people now insinuate that she only does these things because she’s dating a Black man.
“Now all of a sudden I can’t dance? Or that I’m only dancing and listening to the music that I’ve liked this whole time and now I get to actually come out and be myself? All of sudden, I’m only dancing that way because my boyfriend is Black– that’s why you guys are saying that,” she said.
Mackenzie then did a little comparing of her own, stressing how much happier she is with Khessy than she was with her ex-husband Josh.
“I was stuck in a relationship where I had to listen to Merle Haggard and wasn’t allowed to dance,” she said. “I have danced since I was a little kid and if you know me, you know I love to dance. Did you think I just pulled these moves out of nowhere? I have always loved to dance.
“The difference is, I am actually now allowed to do what I love and be who I am,” she continued. “Nothing against no one in my past. I’m just saying.”
Mackenzie wrapped up her TikTok by calling the comparison comments on social media “absolutely ridiculous.”
“
You guys would not be saying them if my boyfriend–- my soulmate and the person who literally swooped me off my feet and changed my life–- was white,” she concluded.
Maci Bookout Reveals She Got Offered a Job at High School
Maci recently opened up about a job offer she recently got and, for once, it has nothing to do with her longtime gig on MTV!
During an interview with The Hopeaholics Podcast, Maci revealed that a local high school asked her to be the head coach of their girls’ wrestling team. However, Maci expressed her hesitation to take the job.
“I coach wrestling and I love coaching, it’s such a passion of mine. But I just got offered to be a high school head coach for a girls’ wrestling team,” Maci said, adding that the job was her “dream” after coaching her kids’ club wrestling teams.
“For me this is an amazing opportunity, and I don’t really have anything to lose,” Maci added. “But the girls who are wrestling do
I don’t ever do anything halfway but this is across town
I would have to be there every day and then leave there and go to the other club that I coach. So they’d be like, seven hours of driving and wrestling every day.”
Maci said she isn’t sure if she should take the job.
“I think it scares me,” she said.

My Final Thoughts on 7x11 (Taken from Shattering’s latest A/N...)
I’ve been catching hell for this POV but I will continue to own it: at this late date, after everything that’s gone down? It is going to take a lot more than a minor bullet wound and a Resignation to make me accept Olivia Pope’s Redeption Arc as a thing. I mean, it was kind of inevitable but I’ve spent so much time rooting for her demise, both physically and socially, it’s kinda a letdown. I mean, I’m a sucker for a happy ending. As cynical as I am, I always grin like a nut when people get to be happy but
maybe I’m petty. Maybe I’m not as empathetic as I should be. That’s okay. That’s something to work on.
But, I definitely enjoyed 7x11 as a whole. I love how Quinn got free from Rowan’s delusional ass and reunited with her family. I loved how Liv spent most of the episode getting swift kicks to the teeth from Karma. I love it when a bully gets their just desserts. I love a good YEET. Olivia being kicked out on her ass by Mellie and usurped by Joke Bastard (of all people!) was the best YEET ever. “You can’t take Command” but hubris can fuck over Command quite nicely. I also enjoyed Olivia taking a bullet, even just to the arm. I cheered. If they wanted me to be sad and heartbroken about it, they shouldn’t have ruined her character so thoroughly beforehand. Call me a Hater. I don’t give a fuck.
There are only a few eps to go and while 7x11 had a few good baby steps for Liv being worth a damn again, this ain’t the time for baby steps. She’s gonna have to pull out all the stops to make things right with everyone, especially Quinn and Fitz. I’m sure that they’ll find a way to pull it off. They’ve done miracles before but a part of me, a big part of me doesn’t trust Olivia not to be pulling one last Move. And even if she isn’t, that same part of me is rooting for her to be alone in the show’s endgame. Death is still on the table but being alone? That’s worse than death, honestly, especially if it’s self inflicted loneliness.

Scandal. Season 6. 7/10
About everyone’s lives after an assassination happens after the president elect is chosen. A terrorist group ends up taking charge of everything that happens behind the scenes in the government.
What makes you want to rule over a country and have power over everything? What makes you take advantage of that power? I guess I wouldn’t know considering I’ll never be there,
Look at so many people from minority groups trying to become president. I love that they bring in minority rights every so often. I love when they talk about the struggle of being black. I love when they talk about the limits of being a women in today’s society. I love Shonda Rhimes.
Everyone is such a strong character. It’s like survival of the fittest out here, except they’re all fit. How are they all so capable and powerful? They’re all so smart too.
How does Cyrus pull guys so well?
I’m really aware of the Windows Surfaces everywhere.
How did Olivia get born into this family?
Memorable Quotes: “No one has ever broken you.”

Naur i really thought violet would be involved other than snide commentary but alas i am disappointed yet again
Idk if it was snide per se but her motivations this season really confused me!! At first she was like ‘maybe I can change Anthony’s mind’ abt the whole not looking for love thing. And like shared all those smiles with Lady D in episode 3 etc, looked happy about the courtship with Edwina.
But then she changed her mind and was always asking Anthony if he was sure he wanted to marry Edwina? Or telling him there were ways to get out of it? But really didn’t do anything beyond that at all. Didn’t discuss with Lady D or anything?
And she was clearly noticing Kathony stuff as early as episode 2 but needed Daphne’s confirmation to figure it out. And then once it was confirmed was like,,,well we can’t have scandal so you gotta marry someone else Anthony??!?!
Like. I’m not expecting her to say ‘run off be with kate right now,’ but asking him if he was going to REMARRY SOMEONE ELSE THAT SEASON???!?? Marry not for love because he’s clearly not in a place where he can do it??!!?
I’ve discussed this matter with @grantairesbottle and it’s clear violet knew he didn’t love Edwina but didn’t know he loved Kate. Or else why would she suggest that in ep 7?
She must have thought it was just lust again or using Kate as an escape like he did with the mistresses.
But then she flipped on a dime after Kate woke up with no explanation. Like what made her realize it was love with them? I assume it was him breaking down in that moment, but it was written very unclearly.
This is not violet slander it’s just a little shade. It’s clear she doesn’t know her son, who she has been running her family with for ten years, at all. He has kept a lot from her so I can’t entirely blame her, but she’s unobservant, unaware of herself and doesn’t have a clear set of priorities.

An Agreement Between Gentlemen (Chapter 13/14)
The penultimate chapter of the E/R Bridgerton AU, regency-era fake-marriage fic. In a return to form, this chapter is entirely SFW. (Chapter 1 tumblr | AO3, chapter 2 tumblr | AO3, chapter 3 tumblr | AO3, chapter 4 tumblr | AO3, chapter 5 tumblr | AO3, chapter 6 tumblr | AO3, chapter 7 tumblr | AO3, chapter 8 tumblr | AO3, chapter 9 tumblr | AO3, chapter 10 tumblr | AO3, chapter 11 tumblr | AO3, chapter 12 tumblr | AO3)
When this Author picked up the mantle left behind by the previous Lady Whistledown, it was with the intention of bringing a little levity to the otherwise long and sometimes dull proceedings that encompass the season, and to provide some color commentary that pokes fun at those otherwise generally unwilling to make light of themselves.
To that end, this Author has remarked upon and highlighted the general scandals that accompany this season as every season, the kind that serve to provide some drama to otherwise dull lives, but risk very little in terms of lasting damage.
This Author has never intended for this to cause actual harm, and as such, owes an apology to the Marquess of Enjolras and Mr. Grantaire. This Author does not dabble in morals, or legality; the sole concern of this column has been amusement, and the ruin of two gentlemen otherwise described by most who have met them as good men is something this Author cannot and will not be a part of any longer. While this Author cannot overstate that there was no prior knowledge of the truth behind the Marquess’s marriage, nonetheless the extra attention shone on it by and through this paper has brought harm, and for that, this Author is truly sorry.
While no promises can be made in regards to accidentally reporting similar in the future, this Author will certainly make every attempt to better vet sources before publishing rumor and innuendo. And the promise this Author does make is that the only additional mention of the Marquess of Enjolras or Mr. Grantaire in this paper will be for happy tidings, with best hopes for whatever they may face in the future. LADY WHISTLEDOWN’S SOCIETY PAPERS, 6 JUNE 1831
The summons did not arrive with the usual fanfare, so much so that Enjolras almost missed them entirely.
No gilded envelope hand stamped with the King’s own seal, no scarlet-clad guard from the palace delivering it. Just a small, plain parchment envelope instructing Enjolras to attend to His Majesty the King the following day.
In truth, he very nearly almost missed it entirely, since Porter, who normally would have brought him such things, was confined to bed for the immediate future as he recovered – and the surgeon had been quite strict in his instructions. But Grantaire, far less used to having the number of servants Enjolras did, had seen it sitting on the table in the foyer and brought it into the dining room with him when he came in for breakfast.
“This is good news,” he told Grantaire after scanning through the note, though Grantaire didn’t look convinced.
“To be summoned in front of those with the power to strip you of your titles and lands and throw you in the Tower for the rest of your days, unless they decide to chop off your head instead?”
Enjolras rolled his eyes. “Better a meeting with the King and Queen than the constable,” he pointed out. “Besides, there’s a limit to what they can do, and if they’re intervening now, it will serve to prevent the worst from happening.” He stood to leave the breakfast table before pausing and bending to kiss the top of Grantaire’s head. “In any case, the usual death in this situation would be by hanging, not beheading.”
“Because that’s so comforting a thought,” Grantaire said sourly.
“It should be.”
Grantaire stared at him. “The thought of you being hanged instead of beheaded?”
Enjolras gave him a look. “No, that the King wants to meet with me. I’m not fool enough to think my death by anything other than old age would bring you any comfort.”
Grantaire pretended to consider it. “Going out in a blaze of glory as you attempt to bring the whole damned system to its knees might.”
“Only if you are by my side as proof that I have won you over in the end.”
Grantaire’s expression softened for a moment. “I would die by your side in an instant, but I don’t think that’s proof of anything.” He kissed Enjolras before returning to the subject at hand. “In any case, why should the King wanting to meet with you bring me any comfort whatsoever?”
“Because it means the Crown wants this handled quickly and quietly,” Enjolras said. “Meaning very likely no public trial, and almost certainly no public execution.”
“That would be more comforting without the qualifiers ‘very likely’ and ‘almost certainly’.”
Enjolras sighed. “There is very little in life that is absolutely certain besides death and taxes.”
Grantaire smirked. “And as I have heard you rail about numerous times, the certainty of taxes is not always applied evenly.”
“Do you know, that may be the most romantic thing you have ever said to me,” Enjolras said, grinning at him.
“Oh, hush,” Grantaire said, but he was laughing, and seemed, for the moment at least, to forget his concerns about Enjolras’s impending appointment with the Crown.
They resurfaced in full force the following day as Enjolras adjusted his cravat while waiting for the carriage to pull around. “How do I look?” he asked, and Grantaire cast a baleful eye at him.
“Dressed well enough for a meeting with the King and Queen, and not at all like you’re headed to imprisonment or worse.”
Enjolras managed not to roll his eyes, mostly because he did not think it would help the situation. “Luckily for both us, I highly doubt the latter options will come to pass.”
But Grantaire didn’t smile, just reaching out to take Enjolras’s hand. “Just come back to me,” he whispered.
“I have every intention of doing so,” Enjolras told him, his voice low.
Grantaire sighed. “You know I’m going to be a nervous wreck until you do,” he said. “Just like I am every time you’re in danger, even if normally you’re the idiot who’s put yourself there.”
Enjolras half-smiled. “Arguably I’ve put myself in this danger as well.”
Grantaire gave him a look. “We’ve had this argument before,” he said evenly.
“Yes, and I still refuse to cast any blame on you.”
Grantaire just shook his head. “An argument we’ll have to continue another time, it seems.”
Now Enjolras managed a real smile. “Yes, and all the more reason for me to return. You know I hate to leave a fight unfinished.”
“No, you hate to leave a fight unwon,” Grantaire said pointedly, but for the first time all morning, he looked a little less miserable, and Enjolras took that as a small win in and of itself.
“Are they not one and the same?” he asked innocently, leaning in to kiss Grantaire, who stopped him, his face falling again.
“Enjolras—” he started, and Enjolras frowned.
“What?”
Grantaire searched his expression for a moment before blurting, “I have never once wished you to be less than who you are, and I do not wish it now. The man I love does not back down from a challenge, and his tongue is sharper than any sword.” He paused as if choosing his next words carefully. “But I beg of you, tread lightly. I will not love you less for holding back if it means you survive to fight another day.”
Enjolras did kiss him then, a slow, heated kiss that said hopefully everything he couldn’t bring himself. “I cannot promise my mouth will not get me in trouble. But I do promise I will not deliberately seek it out.” Grantaire made a face and Enjolras gave him a pointed look. “It’s as good a promise as you will get from me.”
“I know.”
“And yet you don’t seem satisfied.”
Grantaire sighed. “I will be satisfied when you are home with me again.”
“And with luck, that will be before you know it,” Enjolras told him bracingly, so convincingly that he almost believed it himself, enough to get him out the door and into the carriage before finally allowing himself to feel the nerves he’d been trying to swallow all morning.
What he had told Grantaire was the truth: this meeting almost certainly meant no real punishment was in store for him.
But he had very little idea of what was in store for him. And that worried him most of all.
----------
Enjolras slowly closed the door behind him, unsurprised when Grantaire immediately appeared from the drawing room, a glass of whiskey in hand, which, judging by the glassiness of his eyes, wasn’t the first he’d had. “Are you ruined?” he asked.
“Define ruined,” Enjolras said, a little grimly.
Grantaire scowled. “Perhaps now is not the time to be glib.”
Enjolras just shook his head as he crossed to him, dropping a kiss on his lips and grabbing the glass of whiskey from his hand, downing it in one gulp. “I wasn’t,” he rasped, handing the glass back to Grantaire and making his way into the drawing room. “The fact is that there is a limit to the punishment I can receive, barring criminal conviction and without an Act of Parliament.” He collapsed onto the couch, reaching up automatically to loosen his cravat. “The Crown has taken what actions it can, which is to say, I am no longer the Viscount of Digne.”
He delivered the words solemnly, but Grantaire just blinked in response. “I did not realize that you were.”
“It is a customary title bestowed upon the current Marquess of Enjolras, with some associated lands,” Enjolras said with a shrug. “Both will be given to more deserving peers, I’m sure.” He hesitated before adding, “Also, none of our issue will be eligible to inherit my title or any lands, save for that which I own outright.”
Grantaire stared blankly at him. “Any of our issue?” he repeated. “As in children?”
Enjolras made a face. “Well, technically my issue. I don’t think the Crown cares so much about yours.” He cleared his throat. “But if I were to remarry and sire children, none of those children would inherit.”
Grantaire raised both eyebrows. “And what are the chances of that?”
“Absolutely none,” Enjolras said, barking a dry laugh. “The King has also told me that my services to his Court will no longer be necessary, meaning my various ceremonial duties will doled out to others and my power at Court, so to speak, is diminished. Beyond that, I retain my title of Marquess and associated lands and riches, which means I will lead a very comfortable life.” He reached out for Grantaire’s hand, lacing their fingers together before raising his hand to his lips to kiss his knuckles. “With you at my side, and without having to hide. So to answer your question, no, I don’t consider that ruin. I consider that a gift.”
Grantaire looked relieved, but he still hesitated. “Even though I will be almost certainly landless and penniless?” he asked, and when Enjolras just frowned at him, he sighed and elaborated, “I doubt highly my father will continue to grant me my allowance and use of the houses when he receives Le Cabuc’s letter.”
Enjolras squeezed his hand. “The Enjolras purse has sustained this family for generations. There’s more than enough left to take care of the man I love.”
Grantaire searched his expression for a moment. “Yet you don’t seem completely satisfied. What else did the King say?”
“Well—”
Before Enjolras could elaborate further, someone cleared her throat from the doorway, and they both turned to look at Enjolras’s mother, who looked unusually somber. “Am I interrupting?”
On instinct alone, Enjolras started to pull his hand away from Grantaire’s, but Grantaire held tight, squaring his shoulders as he met Enjolras’s mother’s expression coolly. “As a matter of fact, you are. Your son and I are having a private conversation.”
He turned back to Enjolras, who tried not to laugh at the look on his mother’s face. But to his surprise, his mother did not immediately snap some dismissive rebuttal, instead inclining her head slightly. “And you have my apologies for intruding, especially at this trying time. But I need to speak to my son, alone, especially in light of his recent visit to the palace.”
Enjolras wasn’t surprised that she had somehow heard about his summons. “Whatever you have to say, you can say in front of me,” Grantaire said firmly. “Your son and I are sharing our lives, and that includes dealing with whatever family affairs you’ve brought with you.” He again turned to look at her. “And need I remind you, your part in our deception has not yet been revealed, but I will be more than happy to tell anyone and everyone who will listen what drove your son to the desperation of a fake marriage in the first place. I doubt highly your friends among the nobility will be impressed by what they learn.”
Enjolras’s mother’s lips pursed, but again, Enjolras was completely thrown by her response. “Thank you,” she said simply, and Grantaire’s cold expression slipped as he glanced over at Enjolras, who just shrugged. “I can see that you are protective of my son, and while I may not appreciate your tone, I do appreciate knowing that my son has found someone who loves him as...vigorously as you clearly do.”
Grantaire’s eyes narrowed, but Enjolras cleared his throat. “It’s fine,” he told Grantaire, squeezing his hand once more. “I trust her enough to have a conversation with her, and I can fight my own battles as needed.”
“Are you certain?” Grantaire asked in an undertone, eyeing Enjolras’s mother warily. “I believe you can fight your own battles, but it’s her I don’t trust
”
Enjolras rolled his eyes affectionately. “I have managed this long,” he assured him.
“Fine.” Grantaire stood, but before leaving, he bent and kissed Enjolras, a long, slow kiss that Enjolras was fairly certain was for his mother’s benefit more than his own.
Not that he minded, since getting to kiss Grantaire and enrage his mother in the same blow was as close to perfection as Enjolras was likely to see in his lifetime.
Then Grantaire straightened again and winked at Enjolras before finally leaving, sidling past his mother with little more than a second glance. For her part, his mother looked mostly impassive at the display she had just witnessed, and she finally fully entered the room, perching imperiously on the armchair. “I suppose it’s too much to hope for tea,” she said with a sniff.
Enjolras barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes again. “You might have heard that my butler was attacked,” he said sourly. “I’m sorry if him being laid up recovering from being shot is inconvenient to you.”
“I did hear about Porter, yes, but that’s not to what I was referring,” she said. “Have the servants started fleeing en masse?”
“None have yet offered their resignations, if that’s what you mean,” Enjolras said.
“Of course it’s what I mean,” she snapped. “This is a tainted household now – I doubt most will want to stay. Especially as they’ve no way to ingratiate themselves with whomever the next Marquess will be.” Her lips pursed again. “Do you even know which distant relative is your heir, now that you will almost certainly never sire children of your own?”
Enjolras shrugged unconcernedly. “A third cousin, isn’t it? Lives somewhere out in the west, if memory serves.”
Her eyebrows knit together. “I’m surprised you know that.”
“You once told me all about him when I threatened to abdicate after Father died,” Enjolras said mildly. “You seemed to think it would convince me to think otherwise.”
“Clearly it did.”
Enjolras laughed dryly. “I hate to tell you, Mother, but that actually played a very small part in my decision.”
She scowled. “Perhaps you should have abdicated back then. It may have made for an easier transition for all involved.”
“Perhaps so,” Enjolras said honestly, as it wasn’t the first time the thought had crossed his mind. “But we are well past that point now.”
“In more ways than one.” She paused, giving him a searching look. “I don’t suppose there’s any point in trying to convince you to reconsider.”
Enjolras shook his head. “None.”
His mother nodded, her expression unreadable. “Then that’s the end of it.”
Enjolras hesitated, before saying, as casually as he could manage, “You seem
decidedly less surprised by this whole situation than I would expect.”
“What precisely is there to be surprised about?” she asked.
There were any number of things that Enjolras had expected her to be either shocked or scandalized by, let alone surprised, but the look on her face stopped him. “You mean
you knew?”
“That you were
otherwise inclined?” she provided delicately. “Of course I knew. A mother always knows.” Her expression twisted. “Though I rather hoped you would grow out of it, or at least do the sensible thing and marry a woman while seeking your amusement elsewhere.”
Enjolras shook his head slowly. “I’m not certain I see that as the sensible thing.”
She considered it for a moment before shrugging. “Perhaps not,” she said. “But more sensible than being stripped of your lands and titles.”
“Not all my lands, or all my titles,” Enjolras told her. “The Viscount of Digne is the only major one.”
She made a face. “No real loss there, the bishop in that area rules it with an iron fist and will probably be glad to see the backside of our family.”
Enjolras trusted her to know more about it than he did or frankly cared to. “And there’s a few minor lands that will be redistributed but for the most part, Grantaire and I have made it out unscathed.”
Again his mother made a face. “I don’t know that I would go that far—”
“I imagine you wouldn’t,” Enjolras muttered.
“—But all things considered, it could have been much worse.”
On that, at least, she was correct. “And I’m certain you’ll be glad to know that your own holdings will not be affected, nor your allowance,” he told her. “And Grantaire is letting you keep the dowry.”
That seemed to surprise her. “That is...generous of him,” she allowed, before frowning at her son. “But you speak as if all you think I care about is money.”
Enjolras just arched an eyebrow. “You have given me little evidence to suggest otherwise.”
“Caring about the well-being of my only son isn’t evidence enough?”
He managed not to roll his eyes, but just barely. “Faux sincerity isn’t your strong suit, Mother,” he informed her. “If you wish to convince me, you’ll have to try a different tack.”
To his surprise, she laughed lightly. “Maybe I will, when all the dust has settled,” she said, standing and brushing invisible dust from her skirt before telling him, “I will be leaving the city for the near future, and possibly even the country for a bit. I need my friends and allies at court to think that I was not party to this.”
“You weren’t,” Enjolras said, his brow furrowed. “And you are certainly at liberty to tell anyone you need to as such.”
“I have, and I will,” she said. “But I will also not outwardly condemn you the way they would wish, and that to some is enough to make them think otherwise.”
For the first time in what Enjolras was certain was his entire life, he was speechless. He had frankly expected her to do exactly that in order to maintain her social standing. “You could,” he blurted, ignoring the raised eyebrow she gave him. “Condemn us, I mean. I would not hold it against you if you did.”
“You and I both know that you absolutely would,” she said dryly. “But more than that, you are my son. For all your faults and all our disagreements, public and otherwise, that has never changed. And it will not change now.”
Enjolras was again taken aback by what she said. “Thank you,” he managed, before adding, a little wryly, “I think.”
A small smile crossed her face. “You’re welcome, I think. And now I should leave you to the start of your new life.”
She turned to head to the door, clearly deeming her role in this complete for the time being, but Enjolras stopped her, his curiosity getting the better of him. “What do you think of Grantaire?” he asked. “Now that you know what he is to me.”
She looked back at him, surprised. “You have never sought my approval before.”
“And I’m not seeking it now,” Enjolras said. “Just curious what you think.”
She nodded slowly. “He is not who I would have chosen for you,” she said after a long moment. “But then again, this life is not what I would have chosen for you.”
It was no more than what Enjolras had expected, but before he could say anything, she continued, “I know what you think of me, that you think me cold, and vain, and cruel. And there is certainly more than a little truth to that.” He looked up at her sharply, surprised by this most of all. “I know I shall always play the role of villain in your story. But despite what you may think, I have only ever wanted you to be happy.” She hesitated. “And it makes me terribly sad to know you have chosen a path where the world very well may never let you be happy.”
Enjolras just shook his head slowly. “The difference between you and I, Mother, is that I have never needed the approval of the world to be happy.” He gave her a sharp smile. “Hang what anyone else thinks. So long as I have Grantaire, we will make our own happiness.”
She returned his smile. “I do not doubt that you will. As I said before, you two make quite the pair, and whatever else you may think, I am glad that you two found each other.”
With that, she left, and Enjolras sat where he was for a long moment, digesting everything that had transpired. This had been a day of surprises, from his meeting with the King and Queen to now his conversation with his mother, and he shook his head slowly before standing to go find Grantaire.
He found him in the library, sitting sideways in an oversized armchair, his legs draped over the arm of the chair as he skimmed through a book with seemingly little interest. He brightened when he saw Enjolras come in, tipping his head up automatically for a kiss. “Is she gone?” he asked as Enjolras settled onto the sofa across from him.
“For now, yes.”
Grantaire’s eyes narrowed. “But not forever?”
Enjolras shook his head. “No, I’m afraid not even this scandal was enough to be rid of her forever. But I am...strangely not as bothered by that thought as I once would have been.”
Grantaire blinked. “Did she hit you on the head while she was in there with you?”
“Something like that, anyway,” Enjolras said with a laugh. “But enough about my mother. Where were we?”
He eyed Grantaire appreciatively, mentally trying to determine the mechanics of what they could do with him in that position, and Grantaire scowled. “Certainly not doing that,” he informed him, sitting upright. “You were finishing telling me about your audience with the King and Queen.”
“Oh. Right.” Enjolras shrugged and looked away. “Well, the Archbishop is apparently pushing for us to be excommunicated.”
Grantaire snorted. “Does that mean I no longer have to go to church?” he asked idly.
Enjolras rolled his eyes. “Well, among other things. But there’s an issue.”
“What’s that?”
“We could be imprisoned if we’re excommunicated, for a start.”
Grantaire just arched an eyebrow. “Just as we could be imprisoned for sodomy?”
Enjolras made a face. “The Crown has no intention of pursuing those charges,” he said. “But getting excommunicated could lend credence to future attempts at levying those charges, at likely the least opportune time.”
Grantaire considered it for a moment. “Well. We’ve faced worse prospects.”
Enjolras frowned. “You seem remarkably blasĂ© about the prospect of excommunication, considering how concerned you’ve been about the possibility of imprisonment or worse for the other charges.”
“Mostly because you don’t seem particularly worried about it, and I imagine if this were an actual threat, you’d be somewhat less calm,” Grantaire said evenly. “Besides, I had several glasses of whiskey while you were out so it will take quite a bit for me to get riled at this point.”
“You didn’t seem to have any difficulty getting riled at my mother,” Enjolras pointed out.
Grantaire smiled grimly. “That was a more immediate danger.”
Enjolras shook his head. “Well, you’re not wrong about this not being an actual threat, I suppose. The Monarchy has little desire to create a public spectacle via excommunication and as the Head of the Church, I imagine that’s the end of the matter.”
Grantaire nodded slowly. “Does that mean you’re actually going to tell me what’s wrong?”
“Excommunication isn’t enough?” Enjolras asked, mostly rhetorically, and when Grantaire just gave him a look, he sighed. “Fine
I need to get word to Combeferre and Courfeyrac. We have much to discuss ahead of our next meeting.”
“Are you purposefully avoiding the question, or
?”
“I promise I am not,” Enjolras said, his voice low. “But they need to know, because this concerns all of us.” He paused, trying to figure out how to word what he needed to tell both Grantaire and his closest lieutenants. “I was...as surprised as any that the King did not wish to pursue any additional punitive matters. As a whole, the punishment dealt to me is mild, to say the least. And what troubles me is the reason he gave for why.”
Grantaire frowned. “He gave you a reason?”
Enjolras barked a dry, humorless laugh. “Oh, he gave me many. Most were mere platitudes, that out of respect for the service of my father, he would take no additional measures, etcetera, but he also alluded to his hope that our...situation would not inconvenience my political work.” He cleared his throat before adding sardonically, “That he hoped our allies would not abandon us with my public declaration of depravity.”
“And you suspect he actually hopes the opposite,” Grantaire said slowly.
Enjolras nodded. “I’m not going to pretend that my political sympathies are or have ever been well-received at court, and I think most were content to look the other way and pretend that the protests and political actions were the fun side project of an otherwise bored noble. Something I would grow out of in time. But now
”
He trailed off, and Grantaire’s expression turned grim. “Now they might not be so content to look the other way.”
“No,” Enjolras agreed. “And if I or any of our number were to get arrested—”
“Arrested again, you mean,” Grantaire said with the hint of a smile that Enjolras did not return.
“—My position is no longer enough to stave off any significant consequences.”
Grantaire went very still. “Meaning what?”
“Meaning I may not be ruined. We may not be ruined. But Les Amis may be.”
----------
In lieu of coming over to Enjolras’s to discuss the situation, Combeferre suggested via return message that they call a special meeting of Les Amis. “That seems unusual,” Grantaire murmured, his brow furrowed as he read over the brief message. “Why would they not just come here?”
Enjolras shrugged. “Perhaps they don’t want to be seen entering a den of sin,” he said, more blithely than he remotely felt.
“Jest all you wish, but you cannot pretend the thought hasn’t entered your mind,” Grantaire said. “Not that I believe any of our friends will turn on us entirely, but they are all trying to make marriages of their own, and to be tainted by association
”
He trailed off, and Enjolras just shook his head. “That is their prerogative, and I will not hold it against any man to abide by his conscience.”
“Or by the prospect of increasing his purse?” Grantaire asked sourly.
Enjolras shrugged again. “If that is truly their reasoning, I doubt highly we would be associates for much longer in any case.”
Still, it was with an unusual amount of trepidation that they approached the Musain, and Enjolras hesitated before instructing his driver to drop them off at the back of the building by the worker’s entrance. “I do not doubt they would still receive us at the front entrance,” he told Grantaire. “I am, after all, still a marquess and a certain amount of respect must be paid. But I would rather not put them in that position all the same.”
Grantaire managed a wan smile. “You need not explain yourself to me,” he said. “I understand as well as any that the situation is complicated.”
Enjolras glanced at him. “Speaking of,” he said carefully, “have you heard yet from your father?”
“No.” Grantaire’s tone was clipped as he avoided meeting Enjolras’s eyes, looking out the carriage window instead. “I have not heard from him one way or another, so I have no indication if he has yet received Le Cabuc’s letter.”
“Could Le Cabuc have been bluffing?”
Grantaire shrugged. “Anything’s possible, but I doubt it,” he said. “He always did prefer my father to me.” He hesitated before adding, “I thought I might make a preemptive trip back to the house and gather some belongings. Just some personal effects, and things from my mother and sister that I would rather not lose to my father’s whims.”
Enjolras nodded slowly. “That is probably not a terrible idea.” He hesitated before asking, “Do you wish for me to accompany you?”
“I suspect that would cause more problems than it’s worth,” Grantaire said. “If I go by myself, I can hopefully slip in and out mostly unnoticed.”
Enjolras had expected that answer, but he couldn’t pretend that it didn’t sting, just a little. “Of course.”
Something of what he was feeling must’ve shown on his face, but Grantaire’s expression softened as he added, “Which doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t love for you to return with me, or that I won’t miss you dreadfully while I’m gone.”
“But this is the reality of the life we’ve chosen,” Enjolras said heavily. “Going in the servants’ entrance to avoid being seen. Travelling incognito to not cause a scene. Less visitors or invitations to visit because people won’t wish to be associated with us.”
Grantaire eyed him warily. “I feel as though you are trying to make a point.”
Enjolras shrugged. “Just that I do not care about any of those things. But I would understand if you did, and if the reality of our life together does not align with what you may otherwise have expected.”
To his surprise, Grantaire laughed. “How many times must you and I have this conversation?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I wish that you had chosen a better life for yourself than one stuck with me, who was always titleless and is about to be in short order landless and penniless to boot, just as you wish I had chosen a better life for myself,” Grantaire said, a little impatiently. “But you and I both know that the best choice, the only choice, is each other and whatever accompanies that.”
Enjolras laughed as well, feeling a little relieved that they were on the same page in terms of what mattered. “You’re right.”
“I usually am,” Grantaire said smugly before reaching for Enjolras’s hand and lacing their fingers together. Une vie et un amour, remember?”
“Fidelitas usque ad mortem,” Enjolras said, his voice low, and Grantaire smiled.
“And I still aim to be.”
Together, they stepped down from the carriage and made their way into the Musain through the backdoor. The workers they passed barely gave them second glances, though Enjolras assumed that was likely because they recognized them as frequent patrons, and knew better than to stop or question them.
But despite arriving almost a half hour before the meeting Combeferre had called was set to begin, when they reached the backroom, they could hear the buzz of voices through the closed door. Grantaire gave him a startled look. “Has the meeting already begun?”
“It certainly appears that way,” Enjolras said, feeling inexplicably nervous as he stared at the closed door, straining to hear what was being said beyond it.
“Did Combeferre not say that it would start at 9?”
Enjolras nodded. “He did, but
” He trailed off, not willing to vocalize his doubts. Instead, he squared his shoulders and opened the door, walking in with Grantaire at his side. Combeferre and Courfeyrac stood at the front of the room, the rest of their number assembled, all looking unusually somber, and all conversation stalled as soon as they looked back at Enjolras. “Forgive the interruption,” Enjolras said coolly, closing the door behind him. “I did not realize the hour of our meeting had changed.”
“It didn’t,” Combeferre said, his expression impassive. “But there was certain business we felt we should attend to before your arrival.”
“What sort of business?” Grantaire asked with a frown.
Combeferre did not seem deterred by his tone. “The business of determining if your continued membership amongst our association is beneficial or a detriment, mostly.”
“I see,” Enjolras said, his heart sinking in his chest. “Well, don’t let us impede your discussion.”
“We have nothing left to discuss,” Courfeyrac interjected. “All that remains is to vote.”
Grantaire reached out and took Enjolras’s hand, lacing their fingers together firmly. Combeferre cleared his throat. “All those in favor of expelling Enjolras and Grantaire from our number due to their sexual deviance and the threat that it poses to Les Amis and our efforts?”
Not a single hand rose in the air, and Grantaire squeezed Enjolras’s hand.
“And all those opposed?”
As one, all of their friends raised their hands before standing and applauding. Joly and Bossuet were positively beaming, Courfeyrac wolf-whistled, and Combeferre stepped forward to embrace Enjolras. “There was never any doubt which way the vote would go,” he told Enjolras, “but I knew you would not be satisfied if there was no vote at all.”
“Besides, if we start exiling people for buggery, there are more than a few of us who would be in trouble,” Courfeyrac said cheerfully as he embraced Enjolras as well.
“Hear, hear,” Bahorel chortled.
Joly took Bossuet’s hand and squeezed it. “Grantaire helped us avoid a scandal of our own, and we owe him our loyalty,” he said. “Besides which, I swore to go through fire for you, and I would not forsake that oath lightly.”
“Thank you, my friends,” Enjolras said quietly, his chest tight with emotion.
Grantaire squeezed his hand once more before leaning in and whispering in his ear, “It appears I am not the only one who understands the meaning of loyalty until death.” Enjolras wordlessly squeezed his hand in return and Grantaire smiled at him before asking Courfeyrac, “But one of our number is missing, is he not? Where is your erstwhile roommate this evening?”
“Oh, he has found the girl he was looking for,” Courfeyrac said airily. “It turns out your little announcement was good for more than one thing – she was the one who swooned in his arms!”
Much laughter greeted that announcement and Enjolras shook his head. “Leave it to Marius
” he started before trailing off, glancing around the room at the smiling faces of each of his friends, all those whom he loved most in this world. “Thank you all,” he said softly. “I know this will not be easy, but I appreciate your continued faith and love.”
“Our goal has always been to fight against oppressive powers in whatever form,” Combeferre told him. “And condemning men based on consensual acts in their bed chamber would be playing into that oppression.”
“Just promise us one thing,” Bossuet interjected.
Enjolras raised both eyebrows. “What’s what?”
“No funny business,” Bossuet said, mock-sternly. “No suddenly agreeing with everything the other says just because it’s your lover saying it.”
Again everyone laughed and Enjolras shook his head good-naturedly. “I don’t think we’re in much danger of that.”
“After all,” Grantaire added slyly, “what I love far more than him agreeing with me is that delightful shade of red he gets when he so vehemently disagrees with me. Who am I to give that up now?”
“In truth,” Enjolras said when the laughter again died down, “we aim to keep things as much the same as we can.”
“And we’ll be relying on you lot to keep it that way,” Grantaire said.
“There’s one other promise we would ask,” Feuilly said, glancing around. “Or at least, that I would ask.”
Enjolras’s smile faded, just slightly, at Feuilly’s far more serious tone. “If it is in our power to grant it, we will.”
“No more lies.” There were a few murmurs of agreement that Feuilly waited to die down before continuing, “There is not a man among us who does not understand the reason for your deception, but we in this room are brothers, and we deserve the truth no matter what consequence it may bring.”
Grantaire took Enjolras’s hand once more and squeezed it before affirming, “No more lies. We owe not just you the truth from here on out, but each other as well. And it’s the very least that we can give in return for your generosity and personal sacrifices.”
“In that case, let us open the wine and get the celebration started,” Jehan called, standing up on his chair to be seen. “To Enjolras and Grantaire!”
“To Enjolras and Grantaire!” everyone repeated, whatever glasses they had in hand, and Enjolras rolled his eyes with obvious affection before leaning in and kissing Grantaire as everyone cheered.
Grantaire was grinning as he pulled away, and that sight alone was enough to make everything they had endured and everything that they had left to endure absolutely worth it in Enjolras’s opinion. But before he could say anything to that effect to Grantaire, Joly and Bossuet grabbed Grantaire by both arms, tugging him away. “You owe us more than mere truth,” Joly said, with an almost evil grin. “You owe us details.”
“Exactly,” Bossuet said, wearing a matching smile. “And we want to hear all about your first time bedding Enjolras.”
“We promised the truth, not all the gory details,” Grantaire protested, making a pleading face at Enjolras, who just laughed.
Before he could rescue him, Combeferre pulled him aside. “I wanted a moment, if it is not too much of an imposition.”
Enjolras clapped him on the shoulder. “For you, my friend, never. Especially as I believe I owe you especially an apology for our deceit.”
Combeferre shook his head. “I understand it more now,” he said. “And honestly, I’m surprised I did not put the pieces together earlier.”
“Grantaire said he was always a little obvious, even if I never noticed either,” Enjolras said good-naturedly.
But Combeferre just shook his head. “Grantaire may have been, but it’s you I should have noticed.”
“Me?”
Combeferre shrugged. “Looking back on it, all the clues were there, least of all how you allowed Grantaire to stay, not just for meetings, but well into the night when you were ostensibly working, a privilege bestowed on no one else. And I cannot help but think that if I had noticed sooner, we would have had more time to plan, to minimize the fallout.”
Enjolras just shook his head. “My friend, you could have told me until you were blue in the face that I was completely and obviously in love with Grantaire, and I would never have believed you,” he said. “It was something I needed to figure out with him.” He made a face. “Though you are right that I should have told you sooner, before we made our announcement, so that plans could have been made in advance, and for that, I do owe you an apology.”
“One that I readily accept,” Combeferre told him. “And the only recompense I ask from you is the answer to this: are you happy?”
“Yes,” Enjolras said, without even needing to consider it. “More so than I thought was possible, or at least probable.”
Combeferre gave him a wide, genuine smile. “Then the rest we will deal with when or if the time comes.”
Again, Enjolras’s chest felt tight with emotion, with the weight of how much his friends cared for him and Grantaire. “I truly do not know how to thank you, how to thank everyone, for what you have given Grantaire and myself.”
“There is no need to thank us,” Combeferre said. “Especially since you have given us something equally precious.”
“What do you mean?”
“You are free,” Combeferre said simply. “And that gives the rest of us hope.”
----------
Enjolras let out a sigh of relief mingled with happiness as he sat down in the waiting carriage. Grantaire clambered in after him, and sat down on the bench next to him instead of sitting across from him. “That went well.”
“That went far better than well,” Enjolras said.
Grantaire glanced sideways at him. “Surely you did not expect Combeferre or Courfeyrac to abandon you, or honestly any of our friends.”
Enjolras just shrugged. “In truth, I did not know what to expect.” He nudged Grantaire gently. “Thank you, by the way.”
“Whatever for?”
“For making my life complete,” Enjolras said honestly. “And so completely happy.”
Grantaire smiled at him, his eyes shining even in the dim light of the carriage, but he promptly ruined the moment by asking, “How much wine did you drink?”
Enjolras rolled his eyes. “I had half a glass at best,” he protested. “Not nearly enough to undermine my sincerity. Nor my conviction that somehow, against all odds and, frankly, against our own efforts to the contrary, everything for us is turning out better than I ever could have imagined, let alone hoped.”
Grantaire rested his head against Enjolras’s shoulder. “We have been extraordinarily lucky,” he murmured.
“We have been,” Enjolras agreed, squeezing Grantaire’s hand. “We have our friends, and we have each other. Whatever else comes our way, so long as we still have that, we will be fine.”
“More than fine,” Grantaire corrected, raising Enjolras’s hand to his lips to kiss his knuckles. “Our future will be happy. Of that, I am as certain as anything.”
“Being in love really has changed you if you suddenly start espousing convictions,” Enjolras teased.
But Grantaire just smiled at him. “It’s changed us both.”
“For the better?” Enjolras asked.
Grantaire kissed him, a gentle, sweet kiss that was a promise of more to come. “For the best.”

The Best Yuri of 2019
Tumblr media
2019 was a challenging year for many, in and out of the anime community, which is still reeling from the horrific attack at Kyoto Animation’s first studio in July that killed 36 people. However, I want to take this moment, as we start a new decade, to reflect on some of the greatest achievements in Yuri.
2019 marked the genre’s 100th anniversary, 100 years since Nobuko Yoshiya released her landmark lesbian novel Yaneura no Nishojo that shaped and created Yuri as we know it. It was possible Yuri’s best years ever, as more incredible titles were released and localized, we experienced fantastic events and moments, and more. This article is part of my continuing celebration of all things Yuri!
Note that many of the works mentioned came out before 2019, but they either were first released in English during 2019 or hit particular high points during this year. Now then, here is the best of Yuri in 2019!
15: SukeraSparo
This Japanese Yuri visual novel developer is starting to reach new heights as they set their sights on releasing new and innovate Yuri titles. The English release of The Expression Amrilato, an educational Yuri visual novel that teaches the player Esperanto, was one of the most unique and creative works I have the pleasure of playing this year. But, they outdid themselves this year, releasing a sequel, Itsuka no Memorajxo, creating one of the most beautiful Yuri games in Folklore of Kudan, and founding a sister brand, SukeraSomero, “to fill the world with YURI!”
Tumblr media
The Expression Amrilato is available in English for PC on Steam and Mangagamer
14: Mage & Demon Queen
This outrageous and vivacious webcomic hits its stride in Season 2. After setting a solid foundation, this masterpiece by Kuru “Color-LES” is finally able to explore some more interesting plot lines such as its characters’ pasts, conflicts between the demons and humans, and figuring out who’s gonna be the bottom (it’s Malori, it was always going to be Malori). It is chock full of modern humor and moments I can only describe as hilariously kinky, while rarely feeling gross of sleazy. I can only wait to see what is next for these star-crossed lovers.
Tumblr media
Mage & Demon Queen: is available to read in English on Webtoon
13: Yuri Anthologies
In 2018, Yen Press gave us the first hint of some Yuri anthologies starting to squeak into the West with Éclair, but 2019 threw the floodgates open! New works are coming out in both Japan and the West, featuring multiple artists coming together to create works featuring workplace romance, isekai, first-time stories, and even MARRIAGE!! Additionally, creators released volumes collecting their various short stories, like Rouge Nagashiro’s Eve and Eve, and some series saw multiple artists contribute to an already established world such as in the Bloom Into You Anthologies.
Tumblr media
12: SHWD
Sono’s science fiction Yuri doujinshi series, published in English by Lilyka, is everything I did not know I wanted in a Yuri series. It showcases pulse-pounding action as the women of the “Special Hazardous Waste Disposal” fight to take down the horrific Dynamis. It has musclebound beasts of women that exude strength, power, and femininity at all times. And it has a compelling story about overcoming personal conflicts and learning to rely on others.
Tumblr media
SHWD is available digitally on Lilyka
11: If I Could Reach You
No other series this year delivered an emotional gut-punch like If I Could Reach You. This tragic and beautiful manga by tMnR follows a young girl as she attempts hopelessly to overcome her attraction to her brother’s wife. Everything from the artwork to the dialogue masterfully communicates the devastation and pain that the protagonist Uta feels. It is beautiful and devastating, and I carry every awesome moment on my mind continuously.
Tumblr media
If I Could Reach You is available digitally and physically in English from Kodansha: https://amzn.to/36vsYPe
Honorable mention: SQ/Tamen de Gushi/Their Story
2019 was a little bit of a slow year for Tan Jiu’s webtoon, thanks to an extended hiatus, especially when compared to 2018’s triumphant and spectacular storyline. However, small moments of genius like Sun Jing’s father’s phenomenal visual monologue keep this work in peak form top and my heart. I hope that its recent Japanese serialization on Comic Walker help even more people enjoy it.
Tumblr media
10: Still Sick
In my recent review, I called this workplace romance a “Yuri manga for Yurijin,” and there is no way I could come up with a more apt description. Still Sick surprised me with its self-awareness, knowledge, and commentary on the genre. It has an incredibly deep story about two complex and layered characters that ignite each other’s passion, in more ways than one.
Tumblr media
Still Sick is available digitally and physically in English from Tokyopop: https://amzn.to/2rVRH07
9: Going Beyond Girl Meets Girl
Yuri stories tend to repeat the same story, two girls meet, they fall for each other, they get together, THE END! The past decade or so has finally seen more stories adding sexual elements, in contrast to earlier S works, and some even explored the dating life of two schoolgirls. However, we have recently seen something remarkable: works featuring couples “graduating” (literally or metaphorically) and enter the real world. Series like Citrus, Kase-san, and, briefly, Bloom Into You explore the relationships as they exit the honeymoon phase and get into the meat of lesbian livelihood.
Tumblr media
Kase-san and Yamada is available for English preorder: https://amzn.to/2MXnp4w
8: Nagata Kabi
Over the past few years, Nagata Kabi has redefined what the Yuri genre can be. Her powerful autobiographical manga essays My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness, My Solo Exchange Diary, and Genjitsu Touhi Shitetara Boroboro ni Natta Hanashi communicate her experiences with queer identity, mental illness, and alcoholism. No work of fiction could ever hope to reach Nagata’s strength and crushing honesty. Nagata’s manga has and will continue to change readers and the genre for years to come.
Tumblr media
My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is available digitally and physically in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2MZ7DWJ
7: Bloom Into You
Nakatani Nio’s popular Yuri series Bloom Into You crushed it in 2019. It concluded serialization, ending on an incredibly high note, and dominating the market in both English and Japanese, selling over one million copies (well deserved). Additionally, Sentai Filmworks released an excellent collector’s edition of the 2018 television anime adaption that is now a must-have for Yuri collectors. But my favorite aspect of this series is the spin-off light novel series featuring one of its best characters, which have already begun English release.
Tumblr media
Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka is available digitally and for physical preorder from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2SVPVHG
6: Heart of the Woods
When I heard that one of the co-creators of Highway Blossoms, one of the better English Yuri visual novels, was creating his own studio, I was pretty excited. But nothing could have prepared me for Studio Élan's first release, Heart of the Woods, which blew me away. The enchanting adventure full of exceptionally queer characters shattered every expectation I had. I am looking forward to its Switch port and voice acting patch, as well as more titles from Élan.
Tumblr media
Heart of the Woods is available for PC on Steam. Switch edition coming later this year.
Honorable mention: Hayama-sensei to Terano-sensei wa Tsukiatte iru
Oui Pikachi’s manga about two teachers navigating a new relationship is one of my new favorites. Everyone is so supportive of the title characters as they stumble their way through an honest and mature love. However, I am only giving it an honorable mention this year, as I am sure it will be on this list next year after Seven Seas releases the first volume in English as The Gym Teacher and School Nurse are Dating!
Tumblr media
The Gym Teacher and School Nurse are Dating! is available for preorder in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/39JhXMs
5. Sexiled
Ameko Kaeruda’s spectacularly feminist and outrageously funny light novel series Sexiled is could ever ask for and more. I feel in love with its compelling female characters and their riveting battle against the sexist conventions of their society, all of which painfully mirror reality. This work is cathartic, empowering, and so very, very gay.
Tumblr media
Sexiled is available digitally in English from J-Novel Club. Physical edition coming later this year: https://amzn.to/35u6NaW
4: Yuri Life
I adore domestic Yuri. Granted, I love a good romance and fantasy, but so many of these stories exist that it feels overwhelming, and sometimes it is just good to sit down and read about two women who love each other living their everyday adult lives in bliss. Kurukuruhime’s Yuri Life, which I have enjoyed ever since it was first uploaded to Pixiv and am so proud to own in print, is precisely that. Nine couples being cute and living together in a variety of humorous, scandalous, and adorable situations. Yuri cohabitation has never been so good! Now, if I could only get some Yuri titles about women raising kids together

Tumblr media
Yuri Life is available digitally and physically in English from Yen Press: https://amzn.to/35stSLg
3: Children’s Cartoons
For the past several years, children’s cartoons and media have slowly begun to allow bits of queer representation onto the screen. While we are still a long way from having Elsa kiss a girl, the small and large victories on children’s television give me hope. Some of my personal favorites include an episode of Nickelodeon’s The Loud House about a lesbian date, a lesbian couple and agender character (using they/them pronouns) in Craig of the Creek, the female protagonist of Twelve Forever developing a crush on another girl, and of course the unbelievable amount of queerness that She-Ra and Steven Universe shove into every moment. I wish I had more series like these when I was young, and I am thrilled that my students get to grow up with them.
Tumblr media
2: Our Dreams at Dusk (Shimanami Tasogare)
Yuhki Kamatani’s Our Dreams at Dusk is easily 2019’s best manga. The incredible story explores many real aspects of LGBTQ identities, gay, lesbian, trans, non-binary, and asexual included, in an emotional and resonating masterpiece. The artwork is stunning and more expressive than words could ever be. I stand by what I said in my review, that Our Dreams at Dusk is the greatest manga I have ever read and wholeheartedly believes that it was deserving of the only 10/10 score I gave in 2019.
Tumblr media
Our Dreams at Dusk is available digitally and physically in English from Seven Seas: https://amzn.to/2s282AE
Honorable mention: ‘The Conditions of Paradise’ Licensed
One of the best moments of this year came out of Anime Expo when Seven Seas announced that they had licensed Morishima Akiko’s Rakuen no Jouken and would be releasing it as The Conditions of Paradise in 2020. Not only is The Conditions of Paradise a fantastic and mature work of Yuri literature, but it is also over a decade old, having been published originally in 2007. This license, more than anything else, helped me realize how far Yuri came this year. Not only is the hottest new series being adapted, but a historic and profound classic of the genre.
Tumblr media
The Conditions of Paradise is available for preorder in English: https://amzn.to/2FjTE9M
1: Yuri Publishers
Not too long ago, it was rare for us to see more than a few Yuri manga releases in a year if any, but now we are at the point where a publisher can do an event announcing five Yuri licenses in a single day! As of this year, all the major publishers, and plenty of smaller ones, are actively licensing, adapting, and publishing amazing Yuri works: Yen Press, Viz, Kodansha, Seven Seas, Tokyopop, Renta, J-Novel Club, and more keep giving us incredible Yuri. I also have to mention the incredible work Lilyka Manga is doing, working directly with mangaka to adapt Yuri doujinshi titles into English, something I would have never dreamed of a few years ago.
Tumblr media
As Yuri enters its second century, we are staring down the rest of 2020, a year that will no doubt go down in current Yuri history. The year will see a record number of Yuri manga releases both in Japan and from licensed series in the West. We are getting several promising anime series like Adachi to Shimamura, Magia Record, Oshi ga Budoukan Ittekuretara Shinu, a Princess Principal movie, and more. I cannot wait to see what this year will hold for YuriMother and the Yuri genre. I hope you all stick with me through it as we navigate the waters of a newer, gayer, and greater world of Yuri.

Tags: Alternative Universe - Canon Divergence, Season 3 AU, Fluff, Flirting
Story:
It really was a gamble, this: inviting David over to stay the night. They hadn’t spent any time together outside of the store except for things related to the store itself, and Patrick just hadn’t worked up the courage yet to invite David out for a drink. In his defense, he’d done his research and found out that the only bar in the vicinity was a sleazy dive bar on the edge of town. That sounded more like the venue for a mindless hookup than a romantic first date.
Which, is this a date? Patrick really can’t be sure. Yes, David had accepted, but the man probably thinks his sister having lice is nothing less than a doomsday situation and would do anything to get out of it. But he didn’t blink an eye at Patrick’s pretty obvious attempts to wine and dine him, so at least Patrick is not being rejected outright. Even if David just considers them friends. Which is absolutely a hundred percent fine.
“So, in the interest of getting to know each other better, I noticed a member of the baseball in your room,” David says in a way that is so him. “If that is the baseball.”
God, Patrick is so far gone for him.
He has to curl his lips inwards to stifle a laugh before it escapes him. “Yeah, you got it right. Lou Gehrig was actually called a baseball player, just in case you were wondering.”
“Isn’t that what I said?”
“Close enough,” he says, deciding not to get into the fact that Gehrig was a first baseman, not just a player. “I guess I’m just a bit picky about the terminology and everything since I played it all throughout school and for fun in college. I’m actually looking for an intramural club in town right now, if you know of any.”
“Were you trying to say ‘instrumental’?” David asks, his face scrunched up cuter than Patrick should find it considering the other man is trying to mock him. “Because the closest thing to that is the Jazzagals, and I have a feeling you’d have a hard time fitting in.”
“No,” he replies, not able to stop the grin that plasters itself on his face. “Sports that are done for fun are called intramural sports. It’s a real thing, David.”
“Right, right,” the other man stutters out, clearly embarrassed. He takes a long sip of his wine before continuing. “Do they at least feed you afterward? Because I don’t really see the point in getting all worked up and sweaty for no real benefit in the end.”
It’s a good thing Patrick is not eating or drinking anything because otherwise he would have choked. He almost blanks on the entire topic of conversation.
He feels it’s only fair to give it right back.
“Baseball is a good way to release a lot of pent up energy. I normally feel pretty great being sweaty after a round.”
The look on David’s face is priceless. His cheeks up to the tips of his ears are beet red.
“Umm...that’s. That’s good to know. I was dying to find out what that was like,” David replies, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Patrick offers softly, “Maybe you could with me?”
David’s eyes widen to practically the size of their dinner plates. Fuck, he’s got to salvage this; he went too far.
“Be on the same team, that is, if you’d want to learn more about it. If I find one in Schitt’s Creek.”
“Oh! Right, well I don’t think that’d be a good idea,” David deflects with his classic smile. “I broke my nose playing basketball for ten minutes, so being athletically-inclined is not one of my strengths.”
With David, there’s always a story. However, Patrick decides not to embarrass David any further by delving into that tale.
“And what did you do, growing up?”
The man across from him almost lights up.
“I’ve always been drawn to fashion, the arts. Once my mother introduced me to the Avant-Garde style, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My friends and I were more into the anti-establishment free expressionist movement, so I wasn’t a part of any organized clubs in school or anything,” David finishes, as though the ‘anti-establishment free expressionist movement’ doesn’t need any further clarification.
Those words coming out of anyone else’s mouth, Patrick would think that they are just pretentious—and David absolutely is, make no mistake—but the way he tells it, his passion is there and genuine. It’s the same quality Patrick recognized when David first walked into Ray’s office, looking to set up a general but very specific store.
They finish dinner and a good bit of the wine (mostly thanks to David) quietly but comfortably. Patrick teases David to help him with the dishes even though he knows the man will balk at anything to do with cleaning, and he gets a good laugh out of David’s insistence that he is a guest, proceeding to complain that this is “practically like staying at the motel” where he has to clean up after Alexis “all the time.”
It’s so strange how close this feels to something domestic, as if they are together in a way, and yet not. Patrick is very much aware of the invisible barrier he establishes between himself and David. He’s careful not to brush by David as he passes him to put a glass back, always conscientious of where his hands are at all times. It’s just so hard at times like these when he wants nothing more than to hold this man in his arms.
Patrick’s got to act natural here though. After all, he was the one who invited David over. And they’re business partners. He’s got to learn how to stamp out his crush before it leads to him putting himself through anymore heartache and embarrassment.
“So, it’s only about 7,” Patrick starts, painfully aware of the still very early evening hour. “How about I put on the TV for a bit and then we can turn in for the night?”
“Okay,” David agrees without any fuss, a rarity for him.
Patrick goes through the channels, but David insists on watching 27 Dresses when it shows up on the screen.
“I heard from the director herself that Katherine Heigl was a terror to work with,” David says with an odd fondness in his eyes.
He’s been with David long enough to know it’s the look his business partner gets when he’s reminiscing about his life before Schitt’s Creek. But the longing for renewed celebrity status in David’s eyes doesn’t compare to when he talks about the store. A dazzling spark lights those dark brown eyes, and his hands become restless in clear excitement and agitation for the vision he’s building. Building with Patrick. God, he could write a song about those eyes.
“—but James Marsden makes it more than worth watching it for soo. Patrick? You still with me?”
“Yeah,” he’s quick to reassure, snapping back to reality. He smiles warmly at the man sitting beside him and gives the most honest answer he can: “Always.”
David folds his lips on top of each other, looking away almost...bashfully? That’s not it. He’s probably just embarrassed that Patrick admitted that. There’s only so much Patrick can lie about to David though.
Luckily, there isn’t much talking happening. At least, not from him. David, however, chats through the whole film, giving bits of specific trivia and commentary. Patrick smiles along despite not understanding half of it. Still, just when he’s looking at the screen, it’s as though he can feel David’s eyes on him. But anytime he musters up the courage to gaze back at the man sitting next to him, David’s eyes are fixed on the movie, so probably he’s giving in to wishful thinking.
As the credits roll, David unwinds in a truly hilarious, exaggerated way, his arms outstretched in half arc while he lets out a big and adorable yawn.
“You must be exhausted after giving director’s commentary for two hours,” Patricks offers with fake sympathy.
“Hilarious, but as a matter of fact, I am a little worn out after today’s shift at the store,” David counters. “And I can go on way longer than that about a movie.”
He chuckles a bit at that, letting David win this one. However, as the man looks uncertainly between the couch and the stairs, Patrick knows instantly what’s on his mind.
“So I’m thinking we can put you up in my room—”
He stops when David gives a scoff, his eyes the size of saucers.
“Well, I wasn’t expecting you to be this forward,” David says, almost as if he’s scandalized.
Shit.
“No no no, David I wouldn’t—I’m taking the couch tonight, you don’t have to worry—“
He has to keep himself from spiraling because he’s so embarrassed David has confirmed he knows Patrick’s interested in him. But David has to know Patrick would never suggest they share a bed, let alone sleep together, when they have never even kissed. But that would only happen if David was interested. Which this has only made clearer that he can’t be.
Patrick takes a breath before continuing.
“I just figured with you having to stay at the motel most of the time that you’d like a real bed. You’re my guest.”
David at least has the decency to look slightly admonished.
“I um, right. Of course, I knew that,” David lets out quickly in a nervous laugh. “I was joking. Obviously. So I’m just going to...go. Sleep in your bedroom now.”
David nods along as he says the words as if he’s carefully considering each of them, and Patrick is at a complete loss to conjure up anything meaningful to reply with at this point.
David backs into the stairwell before righting himself, practically fleeing up the steps. Patrick moves to position himself at the bottom of the stairs so that the other man can hear him, but he’s not brave enough to follow after David now.
“I didn’t get a chance to change the sheets yet, so I can—“
There’s the sound of water running, so Patrick stops while he’s ahead. He pads up the steps and collects some clean sheets from Ray’s linen closet before refitting the bed.
He hopes David can sleep tonight because there’s no chance he’s ever going to be able to again.
Notes:  I am so sorry this update took literally 7 months; anyone who's been reading this and waiting for an update has the patience of a saint. Unfortunately, my life recently has been a series of hectic events, and I've had a massive case of writer's block. Plus the rest of the story went through about six different drafts before I was happy with it. The good news is that the story is actually all written out now, and I will be uploading the final chapter within the week! Let me know what your thoughts are! Likes and reblogs are appreciated!

RTX RWBY 2019 Panel Summary
Sorry this was late, I had an inconvenient shift at work.
Comics/Books/Manga:
We’re getting a new book from Schoolastic called Before The Dawn. Some people thought this was the STRQ prequel but Schoolastic’s website has confirmed it’s an After The Fall sequel focusing on CFVY and SSSN. Apparently there’s something about the teams splitting up going around on the web so hopefully Scarlet and Sage won’t get cucked for screentime again, but after AtF made Yatsu and Fox cool I’m hopeful they’ll get some deserved limelight. Just hope the cover’s better this time...
We got some new intel on the RT/DC collaboration. The RWBY comic will be written by Marguerite Bennett, with art by Mirka Andolfo and Arif Prianto, and will “follow the adventures of Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang as they continue to try to protect the world of Remnant from the supernatural threat of Grimm.” That they’re wearing the Mistral outfits has me hopeful it’s not just another retelling of Volume 1. More info about the comic is set to be revealed at a Sunday panel about the RT/DC comics.
Talking of Volume 1 retellings, Buntou’s Shonen Jump manga is getting a physical release in Q1 2020.
Viz Media’s The World of RWBY lorebook is still on track for an October release.
Tumblr media
Art by Mirka Andolfo
Merch/Video game news
Merch news was mostly dominated by the announcement of a full life-sized Crescent Rose model that will be on sale on the RT store.
Gaming wise, the crew reminded everyone that Crunchroll is still making a shitty Bejeweled clone called Crystal Quest set to release at the end of July.
RWBY is crossing over with a mobile game called Knights Chroncle. It seems to be fairly popular as it’s crossed over with Fullmetal Alchemist and Fairy Tale in the past. RWBY and Cinder are confirmed to appear. It starts on July 11th. If it sounds good I’ll give it a spin.
RT is working with a company called Good Smile. I don’t know anything about this but my more merch-aligned friends have told me this is very good news.
Tumblr media
Volume 7 news
We have two new main writers- Eddy Rivas and Kiersi Burkhart. Eddy helped write Red Vs Blue Season 10, the Unofficial Fan Guide and has served as a sort of loremaster for RWBY for some time new. Kiersi is a published author who has two books under her name and is the first full-time female writer for the show. Her previous works have been praised as a mix of “Game of Thrones meets Harry Potter” and for handling dark and sensitive topics such as rape culture with appropriate care.
There are four episodic directors, including Kerry and Connor Perkins (the android sent by Cyberlife who helped co-direct Volume 6).
Volume 7 scripts are nearly done- they’re working on the finale.
Kerry confirmed that Volume 7 will be thirteen episodes like V6.
We got our first looks at the new Atlas outfits for RWBY. I’m overall very impressed at these, barring maybe Yang- I’ll wait for a full-body shot. Looks a bit too similar to Vernal for me. But otherwise, Ruby, Weiss and Blake look stellar. RIP Weiss’s scarf though.
No character short this year, which follows up on Miles’ comments last year that the shorts took too much time and money away from the season proper- hi Volume 5. That they don’t need to actively course-correct any of the villains like they did Adam (am I still allowed to say that without having people on Reddit spam “WASTED POTENTIAL” at me?) means they didn’t need to so IMO it’s fine that we got no short. I do feel bad for the Ironwood and Winter fans who were hopeful they’d show up. They even flew out Ironwood’s VA seemingly just to get people hyped into thinking he’d be introducing an Ironwood short.
What we instead got was a work in progress clip of the first episode, showing RWBY, Qrow and JNR fighting Grimm based off saber-tooth tigers (they’re still in their Mistral outfits). Ren apparently gets to actually fight and gets a cool combo move with Weiss. M&K revealed in the commentary that the 14th episode of V6 would have been RWBY’s first hours in Atlas before that episode got cut, so it seems a lot of those concepts are being refitted for the V7 premiere.
Volume 7 is currently set to premiere on November 2nd, but Kerry took great pains to note that the airdate may change depending on production.
Entertainment Weekly has a summary of the volume:
Tumblr media
“Enemies and allies banding together” to me screams of Em and Merc so hopefully they’ll get something to do this year (Merc vs Yang rematch and EmWeiss fight hype let’s fucking go!)
Tumblr media
Q&A
There wasn’t a lot of new stuff to come from the Q&A, but still some interesting tidbits.
Miles and Kerry revealed that Volume 7 will have a scene dedicated to explaining Semblances when asked if two people could have the same Semblance (hopefully it goes better than Ren’s Semblance scene in Volume 5). Kerry made a joke of how “we’re not retconning anything, we just did a shitty job of explaining everything the first time.”
Mama Schnee is all but confirmed to be appearing in Volume 7.
Kerry spoke rather candidly about the crunch in RT Animation when asked how he handled stress in the wake of the crunch scandal (@ anyone who tried telling me RT would never respond and that the Glassdoor story would never do anything good, ha. Ha.). It was actually surprising to hear him actually address it. Per Kerry, the team are trying to take steps on fixing the crunch situation, including hiring more staff and setting looser deadlines. Kerry stressed that the November release date wasn’t set in stone- that if they’re not ready by then, they’ll push the date back. Hopefully he wasn’t BSing, but we’ll see in a year after contracts expire whether or not it was all smoke and mirrors.
There’s only one RWBY panel this year (we are getting an After The Fall panel on Saturday but I have no clue what to expect from that barring maybe Before The Dawn’s art) so barring news about the DC comic on Sunday, that’ll be it for most of the pressing RWBY news. Overall a decent year for RTX RWBY. The new outfits look good, though I hope JNR and Merc/Em get new outfits too.

MFackenthal: A Week in Reviews
Tumblr media
Welcome all to the first ever “MFackenthal: A Week in Reviews” - the post where I list everything I have read this week and provide a short description to entice you to read them too.  This is where we learn that I spend too much time on tumblr.  As this is my first post like this – if you have suggestions for how I should do this post in the future – please let me know.  I consider this blog always to be a “work in progress” and I welcome ideas for how best to organize things so to be better for you my dear readers!
What follows is a list of the fics I reviewed this week.  Quick note: This list does not include headcanon posts, ABC posts or any post that wasn’t directly related to a story or storyline.  This also only includes reblogs and not work I “liked” but wasn’t able to provide commentary on.
This means that if you want to find out what I specifically thought about each chapter, that can be found on my blog.  To more easily search my blog, search the phrase “mfackenthal reviews ________” and fill in the blank with the blog name.  IE “mfackenthal reviews maxattack-powell” to find the work I reblogged specifically by @maxattack-powell.
In case it’s not obvious: I recommend ALL of these fics and ALL of these authors.  I cannot say enough about the fabulousness that is these authors.
The list is organized by love interest.
If the “read more” works then you’ll find the full list under the cut.

The Waterfall, part 7 of The Other Brother Series by @captainkingliam
The Test, part 8 of The Other Brother Series by @captainkingliam
Original Characters:
23. Okay – if I had to choose a favorite of the week – this would be my favorite.  Of course, this piece was written for me and makes me character in the world of A Prince of the Sea as written by @captainkingliam.  This references the only fic I have ever written and may be the only fic I ever write.  (We’ll see.)  I still claim what I wrote was more support than fic.  You can read it here: The Case of the Maligned Prince. Luca sends me my favorite flowers.  I love you, @captainkingliam!
The Case of the Maligned Prince – Luca Tribute by @captainkingliam
24. I love Luca!  This is the series about Luca.  I’m the president of a fanclub about Luca and his siblings. Obviously, I’m invested in this story and think you should be too.  In case you don’t know, Luca is the oldest son of Riley and Liam and this story is about his social season.

Secrets – Part 12 of “Everything you Ever Wanted” by @lizeboredom

32.  Chapter 2 of 23 about the Queens of Stormholt.  I’m a bit behind on reviewing this work, but I think we’re up to chapter 9.  I’ll be reviewing this week, if I can.  Catch up with me.  If you read The Crown and The Flame – or even if you didn’t.  It’s time for us to revisit it through this series.
The Queens of Stormholt: Chapter 2 by @kennaxval
note: Another big thanks to @drivenbyfantasy for creating the graphic.  She and many others (notably: @maxattack-powell, @captainkingliam, @theroyalweisme, @trianiasti, @queencatherynerhys, @tmarie82, and @lizeboredom) helped me think through what this post would look like each week.  Thank you to all of you for your help and to any of you who read this!
One final note:  I reblogged 56 fics this week.
Yes, I have a problem. No, I don’t (yet) want help.
Last, but not least, on the off chance that I missed a fic that you know I reblogged, my apologies! It was unintentional and is not a reflection on you, but upon my inability to maintain my own blog.  Also, if a link or a tag doesn’t work - I am sorry! My excuse:  56 links.

Tony Awards Thoughts
So it looks like, at least for now, the CBS website lets you watch it for free (at least in the US). Here are my thoughts using those time stamps (be warned I have a long running commentary)
0:23 Oh is this going to be a parody of her playing the piano on last year’s Tony’s
1:05 How has neither one of them won anything? I mean I get if they said neither one of them one a Tony cause I mean, they both did shows that one time
but anything?
1:18 Is there anything more Broadway than saying the same rehearsed thing at the same time and pretending it was just part of the banter? Oh theater tropes I love you
1:36 That’s always been something that bothered me, people assume that just because something didn’t win the Tony doesn’t mean its not a great show, and the show that wins might not even be the best one that season (you know who you are). I love the Tony’s but its an award show, people don’t stop watching tv shows and movies or listening to artists that didn’t win or weren’t nominated, it makes me sad that so many shows close post Tony’s just because they weren’t the big winner. Anyways

1:53 THEY CELEBRATED THE LOSERS LIKE ME, these A list celebrities that are totally not losers are soooo relatable ;)
2:40 A few years ago Something Rotten did what I thought was a brilliant advertising campaign listing amazing shows that lost the Tonys like them, so the fact that it was put into song gave me a fond flashback. See? SEE??? Oh it feels so good to be vindicated on tv
3:49 “If you make art at all your a part of the cure” :)
4:10 THEY HAD THE ENSEMBLE MEMBERS BE THE ONES IN THE OPENING NUMBER RATHER THAN THE LEADS THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY. If only my high school self could have seen this she would have felt so much better
6:42 I didn’t see any of the plays this year but I heard the most about Angels in America this season so not surprised. Looks interesting
7:45 Happy Pride Month
8:40 Bake a cake for everyone who wants a cake to be baked would actually be a pretty good diction warmup
14:10 Kinda surprised that they didn’t pick Rather Be Me or Apex Predator considering those are the really marketed songs. “Where We Belong” seems a lot like “Status Quo” from High School Musical. I mean you’ll get that about high school clicks in the lunch room with a blond queen bee but like, even the dance moves felt similar, and the lunch tray dancing, even the giant cat decal. But like, it's not as catchy? I didn’t expect them to win anything tonight but I really don’t think they’ll win anything now? Is that mean? Just cause it feels like it was supposed to be a high energy number and it didn’t have that energy I thought it would. Also come on, just cause you want the girls to be shallow and dumb doesn’t mean the lyrics have to be that cringey. This feels like a less good version of if Legally Blonde and High School Musical had a baby (I absolutely love Legally Blonde that was not intended to be an insult to either show).
15:00 Is it me or did Amy Schumer look like she wanted to say something but Rachel Bloom kept talking. But it didn’t really have any joke setup or serve as a good segway for commentary, what could she have wanted to say?
15:35 Later on I’m going to see if I can find the award speeches that didn’t get televised. most of the world doesn’t get broadway they get regional theater, I wanted to hear what they had to say
15:45 Nick Scandalious feels like a cartoon name you’d see in an Onion article about the Me Too movement. His face even looks like the generic celebrity that had a TMZ scandal five years ago. I thought I read it wrong at first lol
16:40 I was cracking up they know their brand so well. The air quotes on emotional, perfect!
17:10 Mini Sara and Josh are so cute!
17:50 Ok I missed the reference, what is the giant bird lady from?
18:10 oh
20:57 celebrity child picture counter: #3 Amy Schumer. Also guess which year the musical described as “a comedy about class and sexism” is from? Yup it’s My Fair Lady, the audience laughed like I did in that sort of this is funny but also sad kinda way
26:00 This was so overacted and hammy and one day I aspire to that level of loud printed robes. Coincidentally my name is also spelled like Eliza but my voice is not nearly that good. Also does it count as drag if they are clearly men in dresses with some comical makeup or is there another name for it when they aren’t actually trying to look feminine?
26:18 The twitter usernames were too small to see on my screen who were the twitter pictures of?
26:30 See above comment
27:00 What show did Billy Joel work on? Also Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and Josh Groban maybe my mom will finally enjoy theater
29:12 Oh my gosh that picture of Titus Burgess is amazing as is that suit. And that intro is so Titus its great
30:07 Renee Fleming we’ve got the Opera world here too? It’s so many famous musicians from outside broadway on broadway, think of all the crossovers
32:50: Yes spongebob get Josh Groban to sing more thank you for your service. Ok I’m not a huge fan of spongebob but they have to win for sound design that guy is on overload
33:27 Lol it explains so much why the songs sound disjointed cause they got a billion people to write them. Also lol I was waiting for that joke
33:50 Also what I thought would happen would be a medley that way Spongebob who really is the driving energy of the show and Squidward played by the Broadway darling would both have a song. This wasn’t how I expected them to do it, but I was sort of right so I’ll count it. I’m not really a fan of Spongebob the musical (I’ve listened to it twice once when it first came out and once during Tony Season. I’m not one of the people who hate it off the sheer premise and won’t give it a chance, but I just thought it was meh and not worth having the most nominations.) But Squidward’s song is very me, not in terms of melody cause that is I find most of the melodies to be rather generic but the lyrics are 100% me trying to convince myself. Also all I will be thinking about for the rest of the will be what tap dancing must feel like its gotta feel weird how long do you think he spent practicing it with and without the extra legs. Or it might be nightmare fuel with the sea anemone contributing to it, who knows? Probably both,
38:07 still don’t know whose handles those are
38:28 ^^^
38:40 Ok when I saw the outfits I was expecting a Chorus Line Parody, but this Sia parody fits this every genre but musical theater theme of this Broadway season
39:20 Eight times a week, and all the subsequent puns
40:28 Can I just say I love this return to singing interludes over awkward award show banter?
41:44 I saw the Bands Visit a few month’s back and I still don’t know how to describe it. Normally I would guess it would be the second fiddle of the Tony’s but considering the “purists” it’ll probably win most of the awards
44:16 With all the previous reaction shots you knew it had to be Nathan Lane. I always forget how well spoken he is because of his typical roles but he is really well spoken and sincere rather than trying to wise crack and it was so sweet. It made me smile
47:43 His face saying “blow high” has got to be a gif right?
51:45 The entirety of the Carousel number was me thinking if I had a higher sex drive this would totally make me thirsty. They also used very creative ways to physically embody the shape and workings of a ship but then again I’m admittedly biased. Listen to that number you know their vocal prowess was not why they picked it
52:12 I mean, I know that crew gets less attention than cast and plays less attention than musicals but I would watch the full version stop cutting out the speeches. C’mon I love costumes
53:04 I know your joking but that hurts
53:19 yes #4 famous kid photo Uzo Aduba
55:49 Ari'el Stachel’s speech is made all the more poignant when you realize everyone else in his category were white. Despite this season’s commerciality you actually do have shows and casts with Asian leads and African American leads and Latin American leads and Middle Eastern leads somewhere between the sea of shows like Spongebob and Frozen. Show these shows some love, prove that Hamilton wasn’t the anomaly but the rule
56:55 They brought the Parkland teacher for the theater education award! Fitting 65 students into a high school teacher’s office for hours to protect them is not easy, she saved lives that day
58:17 I thought #5 Matthew Morrison was a girl in his child pic
58:40 They went to Parkland?!
59:35 OMG they’re performing!?!
1:00:10 Seasons of Love is the Perfect song for this, they sound so good too!
1:01:18 Girl has an amazing voice! Dang to get up there in front of all of these famous performers on live TV after the media has already hounded them and putting yourself out there is courageous
1:02:45 I can’t see the handles
1:03:11 Will they be able to top NPH’s Tony magic trick though??? Probably not but let’s see
1:03:31 So cheesy but tbh if I had a Harry Potter wand I’d be even cheesier
1:03:46 Was that line improved or was the tech delay intentional?
1:04:22 C’mon Squidward already pulled the same “trick” you have ensemble block the audience pov while someone enters from the back. Didn’t even come close to topping NPH
1:04:43 Little Patti Lupone I can’t believe she allowed them to include her picture of lil’ Patti
1:05:04 I just wanted to include Patti’s line about a “deep appreciation for outspoken women” cause I actually said “you go girl” out loud
1:05:35 Yeah, fun fact, Tony wasn’t a man but was actually short for Antoinette. They referenced it multiple times before, including earlier tonight, but it was stated most explicitly here
1:06:35 Is that a young or modern Claire Danes, I can’t tell
1:07:39 Also it’s really cool that an older woman won something, I feel like the stage gives more roles for older woman that other acting industries, also if people argue that she was political she served political office. Also how cool is it that apparently people were there from every recognized country?
1:09:27 so that’s how they do Sven, I knew Olaf was supposed to be an Avenue Q style puppet but the way they move Sven is really cool (it’s the technique they used on things like War Horse, I don’t know if it’s considered costuming or puppetry or what the official name is)
1:10:20 Anna looks exactly as I pictured her, and they changed a few minor lyrics for it to fit the stage
1:10:44 There are so many quick changes tonight
1:11:22 Elsa did not look like what I imagined her to be, but the costumes are on point
1:12:00 The chorus versions of these songs have beautiful harmony, but Olaf shouldn’t be there yet right? Isn’t he “born” in Let it Go
1:12:47 Alright I’ve been waiting to see how they’ll do the snow effects!
1:14:00 They got out of building the castle by already having it built at the beginning of the song, which is smart technically but I wanted to see how they do it, unless it’s one of those things that’s a surprise for when you see it live.
1:14:25 Never call it “Daddy’s Day” ever again. Never.
1:14:46 I can’t see the handles
1:14:59 How could you not show Chita Rivera’s lifetime achievement? I’ve been lucky enough to see her in more than one show and she is incredible.
1:15:13 And you also cut out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s?? You made the wrong cuts Broadway
1:15:25 It looks like they’re going to show a tribute I’m excited!!!
1:17:42 Two things: Andrew Lloyd Webber has written a weird collection of musicals, like when you see clips of them back to back you realize just how weird of a collection it is, and Josh Groban needs to be the next Phantom
1:18:08 That exchange was so physically awkward they haven’t even started talking yet and I feel the cringe
1:19:18 Is “I swore I’d never do something like that” shade against the La La Land debacle? In 2018? Or am I reading too much into it
1:19:21 I saw the Band’s Visit but I also saw Once on this Island and I thought that one would win Direction for sure but I guess I was wrong
1:22:36 I read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it’s a weird read, but I haven’t seen it live so maybe it’s directed brilliantly, who knows? Who else thinks its a weird read?
1:23:56 He’s getting the Tony audience to sing his boyfriend "Happy Birthday" instead of giving a speech and that is both adorably sweet and such a power move. Also a rare occasion of Happy Birthday being sung on key
1:25:10 They’re having DEH perform? You cut out people who actually were awarded tonight for people who already were featured on the Tony’s last year? And that song is a weird choice for a In Memoriam considering that show doesn’t really
respect the deceased. Weird
1:28:17 Give the tech more time in the limelight! You cut out Chita and Webber’s speeches for a weird tribute and you have weird stunts with tech like the magic thing yet cut out all their stage time. I know this is standard Tony procedure but it is something I will comment on every year until it changes
1:29:20 That move for “work hard for the money mom” line was uncomfortable
1:30:30 They really do sound like the original singer
1:31:53 So that’s how the performers follow the conductor. They have a huge teleprompter-like screen in the back of the audience
1:32:52 This cast seems specifically tailored to gather different subsections of internet geeks and I will not tell you which categories I fall into
1:33:18 I never knew “the Jimmy’s” were a thing when I was in high school
1:34:54 THOSE are the great themes of Harry Potter? Really?
1:36:10 Aww look at little Cinderella
1:36:34 How are they going to build that stage for the Tonys? They built a river inside the theater for it before!
1:37:00 Well it makes sense that they’d only include part of the set, you can’t really recreate an entire building. Yes I’m so glad they included Mama Will Provide. That song is like the definition of a Tony performance song. Why did they include the Daniel bit, that was so awkward and broke up the flow
1:40:40 If anyone would be chill with the goat it’s Nathan Lane. Yup, there a live goat at the Tony Awards
1:41:21 Don’t joke about that
1:41:41 Are you going to cut out every technical award
1:42:32 Too relatable
1:43:16 Is this that song from Chorus Line in real life
1:44:10 English Major life
1:46:03 The angel from Angels in America is so Extra TM
1:46:54 That Tony Kushner line was forced
1:47:18 Awkward segway but REMEMBER TO VOTE
1:47:38 That Judy Garland line ties in perfectly with the Happy Birthday to the gay couple
1:48:04 That reaction to the word “money” is me. And also is a gif right?
Am I so much of a Tony nerd that I both knew and was shocked that the accountants weren’t the normal ones from Ernst and Young but instead were from Grant Thorton. Why do I remember what company normally tallies the Tony votes? Why did they change companies? Why do I care so much? But seriously what happened
1:49:00 That phrase just sounded so odd, just the way it was said “my television Daddy-O Tony Shalhoub”
1:53:15 I don’t have the accent and I’m about as white as white can be, but I really want to perform this song somewhere at some point. I have family in this area even though I don’t look like I would but and I just connect to it. The melody is gorgeous and the chorus reminds me of the lullabies of when I was very little.
1:54:15 Every time the young photos come up it puts a small smile on my face
1:54:37 Good on them for putting their money where their mouth is. They actually helped fund arts programs in places where they were cut
1:55:05 I wonder what the rest of the scenic guy’s speech for Spongebob was because this tiny clip seemed so passionate (and just has such an interesting aesthetic). Gosh darn it Tonys stop pretending the only backstage people that count are the directors and producers, you have all these other people who put in so much hard work yet you consistently ignore them. Even orchestrations, choreography and score?? Orchestrations, choreography and score are crucial for musicals to exist as unique entities from plays. You make jokes about people sitting through 5 hour plays but I would gladly sit through a five hour award show if you just included the technical awards.
1:57:10 me trying to open anything ever
1:57:14 Yes! I was so worried they would go with the super old school ones that get constant revivals. I mean, they picked the show that had “1000 pounds of sand, a 100 gallons of water, a goat and 2 chickens into his theater” when you have safer, more conventional bets. Everyone kept sleeping on Once on this Island this Tony season to talk about their feelings about the Spongebob’s and Mean Girl’s of the world but this is such a good show. Maybe this’ll get this show the love it deserves.
1:59:30 what did Robert DeNiro say on the recording the sound cut out. Did the mic cut out did he say something inappropriate, I’ve been avoiding Tony news what happened?
1:59:55 It’s got more than just a big cast, dancing, and a history lesson. You know that applies to, idk like 60% of famous Broadway musicals lol
2:00:06 when someone gives that pregnant of a pause you gotta wonder what the story is there
2:00:27 Truth
2:00:40 “Jersey Boy” that’s such a good one liner, actually, it might sound sarcastic online but that was a funny one liner in context
2:03:00 Is Bruce Springsteen really going to just do spoken word poetry the whole time? Also I don’t know why but this makes me think of Fun Home
2:06:05 Oh he’s going to sing after all. Though that story is about as Americana Fourth of July as anything I’ve ever heard on the Tony Awards ever and that’s saying something
2:07:39: who are these people?
2:08:00 Didn’t Kristin Chenowitz and Alan Cumming do this exact same shtick when they hosted, what 2 years ago? And there’s was much bigger I mean really go big like that Glinda the Good dress or go home.
2:08:23 Was there really no punch line? Also aww baby Kelli O’Hara is precious
2:09:07 The actor’s name sounds like his character’s name and I enjoy that
2:09:39 Well these actors are very different from each other
2:11:28 I am a sucker for genuine sincerity and that combined with some of the earlier moments like the Parkland moment brought me close to tears
2:12:45 Look at this award shows actual diversity, and not just using one show for diversity and nominating a bunch of actors you have 3 out of 6 female leads be people of color and none of them are a “token” and they all support each other. Hailey Kilgore is so young and such a good actress and I wanted her to win so much but she seemed so excited for the person who did win and they all seem happy at the result you don’t have any of that polite loser face they are all genuinely supportive and this makes me happy. I’m happy, look at those smiles I’m smiling, I love it when they show women supporting each other.
12:14:06 “my stupid little heart with so much joy” is me watching these people tonight.
12:14:27 Still can’t identify these people
12:15:00 Josh Groban’s reaction to Bernadette Peter’s name is me. Honestly Josh Groban is killing the potential gif game tonight
I’m sorry I just can’t take this description of them as “empowering stories” seriously when half of your nominations are Spongebob and Mean Girls
2:16:10 Tonight the Band’s Visit really swept. Honestly some seasons shows don’t win any awards that deserved it and other seasons shows that (while still deserving) probably wouldn’t have won win and it’s all kind of arbitrary, but I’m glad out of this batch it won, it was really the only show out of the four that would have gotten the Tony Award ticket sales boost and it got it.
2:17:35 “Music gives people hope and makes borders disappear”
2:19:08 yes another Josh Groan duet!
2:19:25 I love Miss Peters too
2:20:44 This number made me smile, this whole night made me smile. I was worried I would get frustrated by the night with Spongebob and Frozen and Mean Girls and all the potential for it to be a cynical snark fest or a capitalist money grabber spectacular. There are about 10 billion ways I saw myself not liking this year’s Tony Awards before it started and not only am I relieved that I was wrong about the mood of the night but I am elated. I love me some deadpan humor and some snark but you rarely see one of these nights just wholly be genuine and not tongue and cheek and it was such a breath of fresh air. Even the hokey bits like the stupid magic jokes and banter or weaker songs like that Mean Girls number, because everything was in such a kindhearted atmosphere, didn’t feel as bad as they otherwise would have.

My Final Thoughts on 7x10 (taken from Shattering’s latest A/N...)
Sometimes, what's wrong with people is their own Evil. That's true in real life and in the case of Olivia Pope? Yep. Okay, NOBODY expected her to stop being a piece of shit in 7x10. All right, maybe two people expected better of her (and I love you and admire your lack of cynicism!) but 98% of remaining Gladiators went in looking at Liv suspect and we were right to do so. I mean, it would've been nice if The Intervention worked fully but I knew in my heart that over 2 years of this POWER plotline wouldn't be resolved in one episode, no matter how good it was until the last 10 minutes. It just would've been too much like right, just like Olivia choosing to accept her true loved ones offer of help/a way out of the mess she created without prison time and actually facing the consequences of her ghastly actions with dignity would've been. That's okay, though.
At this point, I'll take her facing the consequences with absolutely no dignity. Mellie is about to fire her arrogant, lying, murderous, lane leaving ass for good and Quinn is likely gonna shoot her in it afterwards. 7x10 eliminated the last excuses for Liv's bullshit. It's not Fitz. It's not Rowan. It's not Joke. It's not even PTSD. Olivia Pope stood there and made her choices in a fully lucid state and as usual, she chose wrong. It's sad to see how far she's fallen but everybody loves it when the Evil Queen and her Minions get their just desserts. That is what is about to happen and I'm ready for it.
Again, up until the last 10 mins, I legit enjoyed the episode. There was a lot of excellent ensemble moments with Fitz, Marcus, David, and the remaining Gladiators. Every Olitz moment (what few we got) was on point. Quinn and Robin are alive and Charlie knows. Joke may have "shockingly" gotten inside of Olivia again but the fumbling flounder fool spent most of the episode pressed & depressed, especially with Cyrus (the highest point of the ep was the scene in his office!) and yeah...let's all say goodbye to Olivia Pope. Whether she dies or not, she's DONE. Her professional life is about to be in tatters and she's about to be utterly alone all because of her own decisions. That's good. That's karma. That's justice. That is completely needed. As for Olitz getting to be happy together? That's what fanfic is for.
