The Bachira-Isagi Partnership post-Second Selection Arc

One thing I constantly think about is how being able to fight on your own is essential to surviving in Blue Lock. Author keeps emphasizing individual strength over teamwork and partnerships. The latest chapter (ch 191) featuring NagiReo's codependency has both Isagi and Nagi's teacher shaking their heads.

It makes me wonder: what exactly is the Bachira-Isagi partnership?

And will this partnership harm either of them?

In chapter 84, we have Bachira saying goodbye to Isagi as his partner:

He has acknowledged how just being Isagi's "partner" won't be enough for him to survive in Blue Lock. Having an "ego" revolving around Isagi was too tepid, borrowing Rin's favorite word. And so Bachira decides to play for himself.

But at the end of that match, chapter 85, we have this:

These panels above illustrate a shift in how Bachira viewed his partnership with Isagi. Instead of ending it completely after thinking it was a hindrance to him improving, Bachira instead took a step back. He realized that playing with Isagi, being partners with him, wasn't exactly the problem. That's just putting the blame on the other person.

And come chapter 113, in the U-20 match, we have Bachira declaring his love for Isagi in his head while going back to calling him partner:

Now, one question:

Why does Bachira use the word "partner"?

The word "partner" in sports anime/manga always brings to mind the word "support." And "supporting" is exactly how the BachiSagi partnership was like in the First Selection Arc. We have Bachira passing the ball to Isagi, while Isagi makes the goals.

In Haikyuu, there's Kageyama setting for Hinata. In Diamond no Ace, there's Mizuki catching for Sawamura.

In these typical partnerships, only one person is making the points, while the other is just there to help make those points happen.

But post-Second Selection, the BachiSagi partnership ceases to be like this.

These panels from chapter 90 tell a lot about their current partnership:

In the end, Bachira didn't pass to Isagi in this game, but to Rin.

Wait, wouldn’t that make Rin his partner?

Nope, not at all. Because in that play, although Bachira didn’t pass to Isagi, Isagi was the one being challenged. Bachira would no longer pass to just anyone, so Isagi had to up his play and prove himself worthy of receiving Bachira’s pass. And that, my friends, is exactly what their new partnership is about. It’s a partnership no longer revolving around who passes and receives the ball, but a partnership revolving around how they challenge each other.

So why not use the word “rivals”?

Well, they are still rivals, just not in the typical sense. And when it comes to talking about the BachiSagi rivalry, we can’t avoid talking about Isagi’s other rivals. I’m not gonna go too in-depth in the other rivals though coz those need entire posts of their own, so lemme just make this short: With Isagi’s other rivals, there must always be a winner and a loser.

(From hereon, the word “rival” is never gonna refer to Bachira just to make things easier for me to write.)

Every time Isagi defeats a rival, the rival always ends up losing something while Isagi gains something.

When Isagi beat Niko, Niko was left crying. When Isagi defeated Nagi, Nagi felt frustration for the first time. And when Isagi made the decisive goal in the U-20 match, Rin resented Isagi for being the one acknowledged by Sae.

But when Isagi defeated Bachira in chapter 85?

Here’s how Bachira looked:

That’s not the look of someone who has lost something, but rather the look of someone who has gained something. And he did gain something--or rather, someone:

He gained Isagi.

And that’s what makes Bachira different from Isagi’s rivals. Regardless of him winning or losing against Isagi in a match, on a personal level, he is always winning.

And that’s why he calls Isagi his partner.

To summarize their relationship, I think this panel from chapter 141 did it well:

Note how Bachira is calling Isagi "egoist" here, and how Isagi is calling Bachira "monster.” 

Yup, that’s their relationship. Isagi is the striker (he’s the protagonist, after all), and Bachira is the monster who will be constantly challenging him to bring out his best.

And that brings me back to this panel from Chapter 3:

It’s been so long that one could easily forget that, from the beginning, Bachira was Isagi’s source of courage. Let me also include this page from Chapter 28:
