Day Seven - Vow / Heartbeat / Waterfall

Alright, I couldn't help myself. I had to do the two of them getting married in San Lorenzo. I chose to interpret the Green Eyes amulets as not only gratitude for saving their people, but also a symbol and acknowledgement of the wearers being soulmates. Whatever status of companionship. Joining them in heartbeat and seeing eye-to-eye.

Initially, though, I feel like they got wedded traditionally in a Hillwood church (like they both dreamed) with friends and family. But they also decided they wanted to be wed by the green eyes as well, since I head-canon Arnold would have spent his high-school and/or college days with his parents in San Lorenzo.

The three have grown up since TJM, of course, so I feel like it would mean the world if the princess-now-probably-queen wedded the two in person to a recluse audience after the traditional one. Kind of like a blessed send-off for the Volcano Boy and the Golden Corazon Girl. (And maybe a chicken wedding gift? For a future son?)

I actually made a small reference of this in the previous post! Look closer at the pictures on Helga's corkboard right near Olga's marriage picture and you'll see something similar to this pose, but in the Jungle Movie outfits. This picture is clearly more thought out than the little reference I made then, but I thought it'd be a cute little callback~ I really loved making this special moment between the two.

I really hope you liked this, I do have something planned for Day Eight, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every single moment this week! Am I the only Hey Arnold fan who dislikes Arnold x Helga? I always thought their relationship was toxic, even when watching the show as a kid.

I'm gonna be honest, anon, I disagree wholeheartedly, and I'm about to go off on a hyperfocus induced rant lol so if you aren't prepared for a dissertation, this is your warning.

Okay, despite using the word dissertation, this is not going to be structured I any way. Strap in, it's about to get needy. I will give you a timeline, though:

Pre-FTi part one (ep1-mid series before FTi movie)

I very much see Shortaki as a beautiful example of enemies to lovers.

In the beginning, both are kind to each other. In pre-k Arnold helps Helga, but they also wave across the snack space. Yes, after Helga gets bullied she turns hostile, but I think it's important to remember that their friendship is ultimately started on kindness.

Pre-FTi(P1) is a lot of just establishing the character and Hillwood, but still we don't often see Arnold truly upset with Helga. For the most part, she's a nuisance at worst. In episodes like The Vacant Lot and Save The Tree, we see Helga help Arnold/her fellow classmates with things that matter to them. Yes, she tries to play it off, but in Save The Tree specifically she says she's helping Arnold "because [her] dad has been bugging [her] lately" - not too many nine year olds would climb up into a tree their parent wanted to demolish for business SOLELY because said parent had been "bugging" them. So despite her frequent annoyances to Arnold, he has clear evidence early on that she's kind deep down.

In Monkey Business we get the reverse - Arnold, despite all of Helga's torment, shows genuine care and concern for Helga, even though he doesn't really believe in her faux diagnosis. If he truly disliked her, he could have simply not shown up.

Pre-FTi(P2) Arnold states on multiple occasions that he doesn't think Helga is a bad person, both to her and others. He considers her a friend, despite their rocky relationship. She's done enough over the years that he's seen proof that she's a kind person.

On top of that, Arnold is known for being wise beyond his years, in some cases even more so than the adults around him. Let's not forget in Benchwarmer when he realizes the reason the coach mistreats everyone else is out of misplaced love for his kid - it's not that far a stretch that Arnold would assume Helga *also* lashes out/mistreats others out of some kind of misplaced or maladaptive emotion. He's already shown the emotional maturity to understand such a concept, even if he doesn't have the vocabulary for it. Which would further explain why he sees Helga as a kind person despite her constant antagonizing.

Furthermore, in the episode School Play, Arnold clearly suspects something after Helga claims she didn't want to kiss him. At that point I don't think he was ready to admit to himself that it was a crush, but he noticeably smiles when he tells her "whatever you say" in response to her protests and excuses.

FTi is a hell of a movie in the best way, and could easily get it's own rant on several topics, but namely for this one I want to focus on the roof scene.

First of all, it's the first time Arnold gets truly upset with Helga, albeit without knowing it's her initially. Upon figuring out it is her, he's shocked and confused because Helga's kindness has never been so out of her way before. Things like Save The Tree more or less just required her to show up. Saving the neighborhood required her to put together an elaborate trail of information, an alias, and full on espionage far beyond the normal lengths available to a 9yo even in their universe. It's not that Helga's never been kind, before, it's that she put SO MUCH effort into something that was important to Arnold, who she supposedly hated, at clear and significant detriment to herself both present and future.

The love confession, unsurprisingly, takes Arnold completely off guard, because up until that point they had more or less been frenemies/a one sided friendship, but upon saving the neighborhood and things settling out, Arnold notably isn't *upset* with Helga about the whole thing. He's awkward and confused, but not angry about it.

Post-FTi we get stuff like, notably, April Fools Day, where Arnold appears to be starting to return Helga's feelings, at least in some way. Again, if he viewed her as someone toxic, he would likely try to stay away from her, not woo her even after being lied to.

TJM shows us (and Arnold) Helga's most selfless act to date - entering the video essay contest so that Arnold can go search for his long lost parents. Arnold already tried to enter - he knows how much work it took just to made their mediocre entry. For Helga to make a winning entry would have taken significantly more work, which Arnold recognizes. She put in an unparalleled amount of effort to do something that could (and did) change Arnold's life for the better forever. That's a huge gift to give even someone you care about, nevermind someone you "hate".

And throughout the movie Helga continues helping, even whilst going through her own personal emotional turmoil. Despite being broken hearted and resigned that Arnold will never return her feelings in the way she wants, she still helps him continuously. Because that's what you do when you love someone - it's not conditional.

Meanwhile Arnold is so focused on finding his parents and everything that it's not until the end that they're finally able to connect and express mutual feelings.

Basically, the way I see it is this:

Both of them have their issues - Helga is closed off and reactive, Arnold is idealistic and naive. But both of them are good, caring people who want to see the best in others, especially each other. Their communication isn't great, but they're kids. They communicate as best they're able, and to a degree we do see it improve over the course of the series.

And that whole-series progression is part of what I like. They're the definition of slow burn, and in that time we get to really see them grow and mature, and learn how to work with each other even when they butt heads. If they just jumped from Downtown As Fruits to TJM, I'd say it was toxic, too. But there's so much mutual growth and understanding that happens during the course of the show as a whole that I just can't agree with that. People change. And they mature and learn and get better.

The end of TJM shows Helga already slowly growing, despite her discomfort. Where previously she might have knocked Arnold aside for trying to hold her hand, she instead retreats into herself. It's not perfect, but it's growth. And change takes time. That little bit of growth tells me that Helga would keep working on her issues (especially if she continued seeing Dr. Bliss), and Arnold is willing to be understanding and supportive while she does it.

So yeah, that's my shortaki defense rant. I love these two beyond any other ship, and nothing can change that.

Hey Arnold Girl Gang AU txt

It’s come to my attention that I never actually shared the details I’d written down for this AU so here we are!

FTI happens. TJM doesn't happen.

Family situation getting worse for Helga in 6th grade. Ends up running out at night at some point. Gets into trouble, is saved by a cool teenager,senior hs, (Angie) on a motorbike. Helga refuses to go home at first, Angie sees this and knows she'll try to run for it if she presses the issue. Lets her hang out with her for a while and ride the bike. Once Helga's feeling better she agrees to go home, Angie drops her off, lets her know where to find her if she ever feels it's too much. Helga takes her up on it. Angie becomes a good sister figure for her. Angie lets her meet up with her bike crew, they all treat helga well and accept her, helga loves it there.

Angie has a mission to get back at someone that deeply wronged her in the past, get justice/put them away. It's difficult bc they're rich, and powerful with connections.

As Helga hangs out with her more, her and Phoebe start to have problems bc Phoebe thinks Helga's getting into bad things w/ bad pple. They fight in 8th grade and don't talk to each other for months.

Angie is killed in an accident the summer before Helga starts HS, the crew know it's faul play and Helga overhears them talking, but there's nothing they can do. Person they're after is too powerful. They all liked Helga and feel bad for her, they give Helga Angie's jacket. Helga is devastated, doesn't know what to do. it's the first time she's lost a loved one, and angie was basically the sister she wish she always had. She runs, tears falling, to Phoebe's house. Phoebe opens the door and sees Helga's state and immediately forgets being angry and takes her in. Helga explains everything, she never wanted to talk about Angie to Phoebe before, but now Phoebe understands. Helga makes it her mission to finish what Angie started, but she can't do anything then. A long the way she helps other girls out like Angie helped her and she gets her own gang she's leader of without really trying to be by jr year, but she soon realizes having as much help and resources as possible will be advantageous so she allows it. They're considered outcasts and dangerous b/c they're like, vigilante justice types, and don't bother to correct bad rumors. If pple think they're just a regular bad gang it keeps eyes away from whatever the true goal/operation is. Which is Helga getting vengeance for Angie.

Arnold is kind of pining in the bg lol The more closed off Helga got and the more different classes they had as they grew up made it so they didn't interact much but he was always still curious about her bc of FTI. He doesn't buy the rumors completely but is concerned, and in HS decides he's gonna try and rekindle the friendship and maybe eventually talk to her about FTI. Gets roped into the mess and realizes his feelings for her at some point.

Arnold leaves umbrella with kitten he found in a box near and before school. “Don’t worry little guy, i’ll come back for you after school lets out”. After school he's thinking about Helga as he makes he way back to the kitten to take him to a foster or something.  pple think she changed for the worse but he knows better. He was afraid of all the rumors too at first but paid closer attention to her and realized she still pretended not to care about anything but actually cares a lot.

looks up and sees helga looking down at kitten. She picks it up and puts it in her leather jacket. It's started raining by then. Arnold's touched by this, debates with himself, looks at umbrella, makes a decision and runs after her/calls out to her.

Helga stops, eyes shocked, but then resigned/ frustrated and without looking back walks faster. "Helga Please!" she stops, sighs in exasperation/rolls eyes. Arnold catches up, 'Can I walk you home?' *flat* "No." "But-!" "How many times do I have to yell at you to leave me alone, Arnold?" He misses Football Head. "You know I can't do that" "Well then maybe you should learn t-" "Look. If you don't want me to walk you home that's fine, but at least take the umbrella ok?" "And what about you, genius?" "My place is right around the corner, you still have a couple blocks to go. You need it more, especially if you want to help that little guy out" Helga looks down at kitten who meows. "..." "Come on, you can give it back tomorrow at school, ok?" Offers it to her, makes her flashback to preschool, eyes soften. Takes umbrella, "I owe you nothing." "Not a thing", big smile. "Well, why are you just standing their like an idiot, start running before I change my mind" "Oh! Right! See you tomorrow Helga!" "... god dammit."

Helga won't admit it ,bc she had long since put out the fire for that old flame, but the reason she felt compelled to take the kitten was bc it has green eyes the same shade as a certain annoying football headed blonde. And the fact that it was just abandoned there in the rain hit close to home for her as well.

Saw this post blow up over night and I had a few points.

It’s rather rare that any program on XD get ratings close to anything airing on the Big Three. In the case of the finales of Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb, they both surpassed ratings of an above average Teen Titans Go episode. It’s not a matter of visibility; it’s just that most don’t go out of their way to watch the channel unless they really want to watch.

2. You might know this already, but it’s good to know. The ratings that you see published after a television airing are curated by the Nielsen company. They have an amalgam of people that have their own TV box that records what they watch and for how long. They do their best to get a diverse sample of families, but their ratings are most likely not a totally accurate view of how well a show is doing. Cable providers and their clients probably have their own means of measuring viewership, but they don’t usually publish it unless they’re bragging about how well a series did. Anyway, Disney probably isn’t paying too much attention to the channel’s ratings projected through Nielsen. They probably have a more holistic approach to measuring viewer response in addition to their own metrics and tests.Even so, XD seems widely experimental at this point; not sure if it returns investment to the Mouse House, but it doesn’t seem all that profitable. Make of that what you will...but try not to pirate the shows in the meantime lol

The outpouring of fan art, songs, theories, and other expressions of fandom fanaticism are undecidedly helping; Disney wants to see the show is making waves and having an impact on people. Keep doing what you’re doing; but stuff, make stuff, talk to ppl on the show, just raise awareness. Believe me, it’s helping.

4. Dan and Swampy are somewhat like demigods(I’d call them lesser gods but it doesn’t sound as good) in the world of animation. Not to elevate them high upon a pedestal undeservedly(tho we love them and their work so), but they are some of the most powerful ppl in this industry today. They’ve truly got it all, which is part of the reason why Disney gave them the opportunity to pitch another show nearly three years ago. If the planets align just right, they could go on with Disney indefinitely like Butch Hartman and amass show after show with the House of Mouse. That doesn’t mean that MML couldn’t be unceremoniously canned, but it’s a lot less likely. I think the season 3 pickup is coming, but it has a better chance if there is a very positive reception. Again, the tactics listed on the previous point sometimes aren’t enough. In the cases of Wander and the 7D, it just wasn’t enough. Those shows were far into cancellation by the time the response got through. Though those shows could get rebooted at some point, I find it unlikely. It’s all relative. I’d recommend trying to watch on the app, though I know that it has fewer offerings to ppl w/o cable.

5. Milo has been raking in fairly good views. OP was probably worried about the two periods in March and September in which MML pulled in amazingly low ratings. We’re talking ratings just a cut above Nicktoons ratings at their worst, which has about 50,000 ppl watching. It’s well below average, especially since those weeks got good promotion to my knowledge. It’s shocking to see, but sometimes dips in viewership happen for unexplained reasons. The beginning of Sept. seems like a bad time to drop new episodes due to the school year starting up again. It might help to look through the other XD offerings to see if they suffered from a drop in the same week/month. If others did suffer in the week, it was a poor time for the channel.

So, I don’t think we have much to worry abt rn. If we see some schedule reshuffling or a drop in reruns shown, it might be time to break in an extra support beam. I think we’ll be okay for now.

I’m seeing WAY too much nowadays that good cartoon shows are NOT GETTING THE SUPPORT THEY DESERVE. Due to Cartoon Network’s SHIT scheduling, and Disney’s fucking HORRIBLE idea to transfer all their cartoon shows to DIsney XD, shows like Steven Universe and Milo are in SERIOUS trouble.

But Milo’s got it really bad. Here’s a list of their recent episodes and how many views each one got:

They’re averaging around .20 million views, and it’s descreasing by the minute. Even WE BEAR BEARS and UNCLE GRANDPA gets 10 times as much as this, maybe even more.

This is urgent. I am not kidding. If we don’t do something about this this wonderful show will be canceled. If you can, PLEASE DO NOT WATCH IT ILLEGALLY. The show NEEDS SUPPORT. Tell your friends about it, because lord knows Disney isn’t gonna provide adequate advertisement. Write to Disney telling them how much you love it. This show’s future is resting on all of us. Please make sure it doesn’t go away.
