[ID: "Epic handshake" meme of two muscular arms locked in a firm handshake, one with the caption "Plastic straws are the issue", the other "Synthetic leather is the issue". Where their hands are clamped together it reads "Meat-eaters not wanting to face the fact that the number 1 issue affecting animals is whether or not they get farmed & eaten and if their (and our) habitats get destroyed by fishing, farming and related industries" /end ID]
The best way to save animals (including humans) from harm, protect the environment, reduce pollution, fight back against the climate crisis & reduce plastic use is to drastically decrease the production & consumption of all animal products including fish & leather. The evidence on this is clear, while evidence supporting the notion that non-plastic straws and real hide leather are superior choices with a big enough positive impact to justify the amount of hype surrounding them is not.
"In the oceans, fishing nets, are among the most prevalent form of plastic pollution. One study published in 2018 found that 46% of the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic estimated to be in the infamous Great Pacific Garbage Patch came from fishing nets." - BBC: Plastic or paper? The truth about drinking straws
"A significant reduction in meat consumption is essential to mitigate climate change..." - Wikipedia: Environmental impacts of animal agriculture

Whales are freaking awesome
Tumblr media
When I was a kid I loved the series Ocean Girl and it totally got me fascinated with whales. They are just so intelligent and for the most part very sociable. They are fascinating to me. Most of all I am fascinated with them because they look at us humans and are like: "Yo, fellow intelligent creature!"
There are a ton of videos online with all sorts of whales coming to human divers or humans on boats and show them where they got tangled up with fishing hooks and fishing lines. Because they understand that humans are likely to want to help them - and because they know humans will understand when they show them. This might seem very random, but it actually betrays so much intelligence from their side - and the ability to understand how humans are thinking in some regards.
In Australia there was a school of orcas, that worked together with humans to capture other whales. While we now can talk about the moral of this (class traitors, man!), this is interesting because it was wild whales that were not trained to do that. They just worked together with humans.
There is also another thing: While those entire SeaWorld types shows are horrid and whales of no sort belong in a fucking swimming pool... We also have seen in the wild that dolphins and some whales will do tricks for humans knowing that humans might actually feed them for that.
I find this so interesting, because it is one of those things were once again we humans just think of ourselves as so much more intellgent than other creatures out there... But we are not really the only kind of intelligent creature nor the only animal able to understand the intelligence in other animals either.
But we also need to do better to protect those animals. Because we are horrible to me. Also the polution. The normal one and the noise polution as well. We should just do better by those creatures, man.

I made this late at night, don’t know wtf was going on
yeah my gf thought I was taking drugs, the text to her originally before I made this image was, “All I can think of is a British man who loves destroying the environment hearing a video from a different British man that said “if you were a seahorse, and I fucked your wife?”Then he decided to never destroy the environment again after saying a monologue referencing the video”

Whoever decided to read this today, I want you to know that even the smallest thing you do today, whether it would be crushing up your water bottle or cans to save space in landfills or recycle or even complement something today has the power no matter how small to make a difference in the world. Whether you make somone smile or help save the ocean so much by recycling YOU are amazing and I thank you for helping us! Don't give up, you don't know how much you help.
Signed- a girl from the internet.

I love Boats (but they probably suck)
Tumblr media
I wanna talk about the ocean this week and because of that I wanna talk about boats. Well, ships.
Something you gotta understand about me, I love the ocean. While I never grew up next to the ocean, my aunt and uncle had a vacation home on one of the German islands in the north sea and we spend a lot of time there. I always found the ocean always soothing. And because of that I always loved boats.
I am pretty much immune against sea sickness. I have been on ships during strong storms and such and never felt sick. On the contrary, I found it kinda soothing. Whenever I got to sleep on ships (even with stormy seas) I slept like a little kitten.
If I got a research position on a ship, I would be the happiest little alpaca.
But... I also see that there is a big problem with boats and ships how we use them in today's society. See, when the whales started to attack those yachts in the Mediterranean a lot of folks I know would argue: "But what about the normal people who just love boating?"
And I was like... "Uhm, dunno what to tell you, but 'normal people' cannot afford to have their own boat."
Sure, a lot of them still are workers, but they are still wealthy enough. And here is the thing: All those boats on the ocean are actually not a good thing for the animals living in the ocean for several reasons. There is the just straight up polution that the different boats leave there. Through the burning of fossil fuels, but also through all sorts of waste ending in the ocean.
And currently there are just too many boats on the ocean. Especially too many boats that are just there for recreational purposes. Be it someone with a small yacht, be it s fucking asshole billionaire with the big yacht, or be it those stupid cruise ships that are just bad for everyone and everything.
So, yeah... I love boats. But... I think that maybe we should have less of them...

Ocean Acidification
Ocean Acidification threatens the whole foundation of the ocean food chain. Shells of marine life gradually dissolve away, leaving those animals spending more energy on building shells than on finding food, which makes it harder for them to grow and survive and the predators that eat them will struggle to survive as well.
Ocean Acidification threatens coral reefs due to climate change. An increase in greenhouse gasses causes climate change and ocean acidification, and a change in the climate causes a change in the ocean. When the ocean is warmed, sea levels rise and storm patterns change which smothers the coral reef and destroys its structure. Eventually, changes in precipitation will increase freshwater, sediment, and land-based pollutants like fertilizer and other nutrients, to runoff into the ocean and increase algal bloom and murky up the water, which reduces the amount of light able to pass though. Ocean currents altar, and the changes in connectivity and temperature cause a lack of food. Finally, pH levels will reduce and growth and structural integrity will decrease.
Ocean Acidification affects the temperature of the ocean by warming it. Zooxanthellae are compounds made by coral polyps, creatures making up coral that receive shelter. They turn sunlight into energy, which they provide mostly to polyps. Coral and zooxanthellae are temperature specific, and if it gets too warm zooxanthellae cannot convert sunlight to energy efficiently, leaving extra energy which becomes toxic chemicals. Those toxic chemicals remove zooxanthellae. When they are all gone the coral turns white, coral bleaching. If these zooxanthellae are missing for too long the coral structure will become a wasteland.
One way we can decrease ocean acidification is by shrinking carbon footprint. This means reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses we produce. Some ways we can do this is by driving less, burning less fuels that we pollute our atmosphere with. We can also use energy efficient appliances and reserve water and trees.
Another way we can reduce pollution is reusing and recycling. Factories run to produce more and more plastics and other nonbiodegradable things. While our factories run they release greenhouse gasses and smoke. The things we produce get thrown into wastelands rather than be used again, and this pollution harms a variety of life. We can also reduce harmful chemicals we use, like chemicals we spray outside to kill bugs and pests. People also consume lots of non sustainable animals, which leads to an endangerment of species, and we already have a large enough food waste rate. We should consume animals that we have more of that can sustain reproduction and life well.
Humans are constantly burning fossil fuels when simply participating in daily activities. Driving, throwing away trash, killing/consuming animals, using paper and water, working in an industrial setting, tending to farms and livestock, use of electricity and nonrenewable energy, all cause pollution. The pollution caused leads to climate change by the carbon dioxide emission, which is the source of ocean acidification. Climate change warms the ocean and takes up less carbon, and our marine life consumes these carbonate ion molecules. But when carbonate ions react with water it releases hydrogen ions, which makes the ocean more acidic and slowly dissolves life.
just a lil smth for school :) AWARENESS!!!
