Why I do not blindly praise Biden's "accomplishments."
Half of his accomplishments aren't even of his own doing.
He did not single-handedly solve the pandemic. Covid still exists. Everyone just learned to live with it.
He didn't single-handedly rally the entire world into supporting Ukraine; they didn't need America to tell them to do that.
In fact, a lot of his accomplishments aren't even accomplishments.
He didn't do shit to lower our everyday expenses. I spend $50 for groceries, and I'm lucky to leave with 2 bags worth of food. If the price of gas goes down by 5 cents, I know damn well it wasn't because Biden finally told Big Oil to stop price gouging.
He didn't do shit to put a stop to the ever increasing gun violence in our country. We got middle schoolers shooting up their fucking schools. Sorry Biden, but your little half mumbled speeches aren't doing shit to solve this purely American crisis.
So, what has he done?
He signed a bill that blatantly infringes on our freedom of speech.
He sent $17b to Israel, where it has been used to help fund their campaign for genocide.
The USA is a for-profit corporate hell-scape. Food has become a privilege, not a right. People are choosing between paying rent or paying for groceries. And you can be arrested just for being homeless.
Yet, time and again, our politicians turn a blind eye to these issues and pretend they don't exist. If legislation is proposed that would improve your quality of life, they vote against it. Why? Because one of the often overlooked realities in our country is the existence of corporate owned prisons. Rather than solve the housing crisis, you can just charge people with a misdemeanor, imprison them for failing to pay the fines, and profit off their incarceration.
But we can afford to send $17b in taxpayer dollars to fund genocide.
That is the US of A; land of the free only if you're in the 1%.

This is such bullshit. I like TikTok, it's a fantastic platform for people to get their info out there. I'm really hoping this doesn't go through.

An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress
The DATA Act and the RESTRICT Act are un-American
518 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I'm alarmed by the Ban TikTok discussion & the RESTRICT Act. We're a democratic country with a First Amendment that guarantees free expression. How does banning a social media platform abide by that principle? Especially since the US government condemns authoritarian governments in other parts of the world for blocking US-based social networks. Examples:
When Nigeria banned Twitter for seven months in June 2021, the U.S. condemned it, reiterating its support for "the fundamental human right of free expression & access to information as a pillar of democracy."
Individuals responsible for the blocking of social media applications in Iran were condemned as "engaging in censorship activities that prohibit, limit, or penalize the exercise of freedom of expression or assembly by citizens of Iran."
When American digital platforms have been banned or severely restricted by governments--including the Chinese Communist Party, Pakistan, & Uganda--seeking to silence & obstruct the open flow of communication & information, the US calls these entities out for it. So why are we doing the same?
TikTok is a red herring. The DATA Act & the RESTRICT Act are very broad & could lead to other apps or communications services with connections to foreign countries being banned in the US. The stated intention is to target apps/services that pose a threat to national security; the way it's currently written raises serious human & civil rights concerns that should be far more important to you.
Caitlin Vogus says: "Any bill that would allow the US government to ban an online service that facilitates Americans' speech raises serious First Amendment concerns…" And those concerns will impact marginalized & oppressed people & groups more.
The "reasoning" behind Ban TikTok is not sound. The racist fearmongering around China is bad enough. Worse is the core of the argument -- data being collected & shared & used against people -- is a problem with ALL social media. Why isn't Congress focusing on that? The apps on your phone (Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Twitter) are constantly monitoring you & sending information about you to data brokers. Info that can be easily tied to you as an individual despite claims that all the data is "anonymized".
Congress should be addressing the larger problem & not one social network. Restricting what data they can collect about users & forbidding them from selling that data will address the issue with TikTok, too.
I urge you to kill the DATA Act & the RESTRICT Act. They need to be tossed out & more measured legislation proposed in their place that addresses the foundational problems of social media apps & services & the data they collect & who they share it with & how they & other entities use that data.
I know that's not as easy or sexy as Ban TikTok! It does address our Constitutional right to assemble & free expression. That's far more important than knee-jerk reactions & bandwagon jumping.

I know I keep talking about how if TikTok gets banned it sets a precedent that Congress can come after any other social media and ban that too, but I don't think it's getting through.
Be that because most of you think "Oh it's just TikTok- Good riddance!" or you just think it won't effect you, I'm not sure- but I need you all to understand that the bill they're pushing is not just a "Ban TikTok Bill" it's an Internet Censorship Bill.
Here's the bill if you want to read it for yourself.
If you're thinking, 'Just move to a different social media, it's not that deep," You're wrong. There is no "Oh just move to another social media." Any social media they believe is making it too easy for people to come together and organize they will come for. Yes, it could even be tumblr.
This is bigger than just TikTok getting banned.
Congress does not want people having easy access to information. They're pushing fascism, and I'm not being hyperbolic.
They don't like that around 150 million US Americans use TikTok. Or that it's become the largest and easiest place for people to come together and organize. Or that it's also become a place where news travels fastest and gets the most coverage. News of the Iran Protests, the Strike in France, The Ohio Train Derailment, The 300+ anti-trans bills, all the anti-abortion bills, Stop Willow, Save ICWA, and the growing desire for a General Strike in the US, just to name a few, all got massively more coverage on TikTok than on the main news sources.
Congress does not like that.
If they can cut off our access to information, then it's easier to stop us from trying to hold them accountable. You can't protest what you're not aware of.
I also need you all to remember this all started because Zuckerberg actively lobbied with Republican PR firms to get TikTok banned because he couldn't compete with it. He's hoping everyone will come back to Facebook and Instagram if it's gone, and he worked with Republicans to do it. He did it for money.
If this passes we will literally have Zuckerberg to thank for this further descent into fascism, and yes, cutting your citizens off from outside information is what fascists do.
And I can't stress enough, he did it for money. He knew what he was doing, knew this would push us further into fascism, and he did it for money. We need to delete Facebook and Instagram if this passes, if not before. He doesn't get to be rewarded for this.

As of now, Florida and Kansas have passed bills that align with KOSA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So many people have held back on speaking out against KOSA or signing petitions because "it probably won't pass." But we have proof that it very well can and will.
So what can we do right now?
The same thing we've been doing: bring awareness and protest.
Here are a few websites you can visit to sign petitions:
https://www.badinternetbills.com/
https://www.stopkosa.com/
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/02/dont-fall-latest-changes-dangerous-kids-online-safety-act
You can also call your state reps. This post explains how you can do that.
Good luck, everyone! Don't give up yet.

I think abt this tiktok all the time
[ID: A captioned Tiktok by @nextdreadpirate. A comment in the middle of the screen says, "Always tip the maid" as a skinny white man trots into the middle of the screen. He's wearing a frilly maid's dress and cap and holding a notebook and pen. The comment disappears as he says, "Hi! Welcome to the maid cafe where we're-" He turns to the right, does the nya hand gesture with each hand, then kicks up a heel, showing off a black pump. "-cuter than kittens!" He finishes, then drops the pose and turns back to face the camera, shuffling a bit closer and leaning in as he talks. "I'm the diversity hire, Bryson. Are you here for the gamer discount?"
A door opens in the background, and Bryson stands up and turns to the left, holding out a warning hand. "Okay, I can explain," he says to people offscreen, starting to laugh. Someone laughingly says, "Oh my god," and another person starts laughing as the video ends. End ID]
