if you want soft linen, you have to scrunch it up and wrinkle it and wash it and dry it and then scrunch it up some more.
linen is made from a very stiff grass fibre, so you gotta abuse it a lil to soften it. seriously. it'll get softer with each wear.
just make sure that what you're buying is *actually linen*. stores and especially amazon sellers will tag shit with *anything that looks right* so you gotta check the fibre content. if it's labelled linen but the tag/fibre content says any word that is not "linen", don't get it. it won't behave like actual linen.
rayon is a different plant fibre, bamboo is heavily processed in a way that is NOT actually environmentally friendly, wool *can be* rough, depending on the sheep breed and weave of the fabric. cotton can be heavy if it's a heavy weight fabric, just like higher threadcount sheets are heavier. a 7oz linen or cotton is better for durability than a 3oz, but it's heavier. just like the leather in a leather skirt is thinner and lighter than the leather used for a belt or satchel.
as always, there is nuance. there's a lot of info to remember and keep track of.
easiest things to remember are the names of natural fibres, your body measurements, and that stiff fabrics often need to be worn in like a good pair of shoes.
Idk exactly how to explain this but the softness of real wool and real linen is very different from the artificial softness of polyester “sherpa”, fuzzy faux-fur, spongey acrylic knits and people have gotten too used to the soft plastics and now associate wool with “itchy” and linen with rough and cotton with “too heavy” and then go and wear 100% polyester fleecy sweatshirts and say it’s so warm and cozy but actually they’re just staticky cooking in their sweat locked inside a plastic membrane and you are paying too much to be wearing filaments of petroleum products and the money isn’t going to the people sewing them either. I’m saying you all need to touch grass and the grass in this situation is good quality textiles made of natural fibres.

The mourning suit. This is the costume that instantly made me go "WHAT? oh, no" Because look at it. It looks like it's made of wool. This is the moment it appears, half way through episode 33. What.
There's no embellishment, no shine of any kind, no transparency unless it's backlit. I can't tell what the material really is, but it looks like a fine dark grey wool with a subtle richness of shade in the weave, and a sort of crepe edging (which the sleeves also have).
That seam along the top of the shoulder is surprising: visible seams hardly happen in his other costumes, except when they're revealed by patterns, and specifically not there.
None of these high-necked, imperious undershirts. No glitter. No train. No storm-clouds of gauze, no explosions of gold, no river of velvet in five shades of honey, no roots of the forest, no flames, not even the black satin or the silver moonscapes he wore in the human realm. Just a leather belt on top and skin underneath. Not even a buckle.
The total effect of he way the sleeves hang, the textures, and the composition of the shot above, is to make him look tiny in relation to Shangque. Our eyes are invited to abandon the delusion that he is tall or imposing, and recognise the body of a dancer.
The headpiece points down more than up, and hardly even shines. It could be jet, and you can hardly see it from the front, it just makes absurd little antennae above the ears.
It's ankle-length, and there's no train at all; the shape is relatively practical, like the hunting dress, or like Shangque's outfit.
Of all the costumes, I think this has two other outstanding, and contradictory, properties:
it's the one that can only be created instantaneously out of the fabric of fantasy spacetime by the character's state of mind. In the previous scene, in the same location, he was still wearing the Fire Gown. What purpose or occasion could possibly explain this having ever been made for him? It's intentionally unclear how either clothes or bodies are supposed to work in-universe, but can you imagine this sitting in a sandalwood chest in Moon Palace waiting to be magically summoned? It's a nope from me.
It's the one that's most explicit about someone having made it. There's a visible shoulder seam, and another that joins the sleeve.
This outfit is an extreme contrast of visual texture with every other thing the character has worn, up to this moment.
And, to my Western eye, the colour and unadorned texture, not to mention the lapels, bring an association of ideas which I will call on the art historian Anne Hollander to explain. She's writing about the genesis of the modern Western suit, about 1810:
"Formerly the play of light on rich and glinting textures had seemed to endow the gentleman with the play of aristocratic sensibility, and made him an appropriate vessel for exquisite courtesy, schooled wit, and refined arrogance without having to reveal the true fibre and calibre of his individual soul any more than that of his body. ... ... Brocade and embroidery had once indicated the generic superiority even of quite inferior individuals, and had displayed the beauty of the costume, not the man. Careful fit witout adornment, on the other hand, emphasizes the unique grace of the individual body - indeed creates it, in the highest tailoring tradition. The man's rank, or even his deeds, are irrelevant to the fine cut of his plain coat; only his personal qualities are shown to matter. ... ... The perfect man, as conceived by English tailors, was part English country gentleman, part innocent natural Adam, and part naked Apollo the creator and destroyer ... expressed not in bronze or marble but in natural wool, linen, and leather, wearing an easy skin as perfect as the silky pelt of the ideal hound or horse, lion or panther."

As a visual comparison, here are three actual suits being worn in masterly fashion by (l to r) Tony Leung, Wang Yibo, and Eric Wang in the trailer for Hidden Blade (2023), which happens to be on my dash:

I also think it's a great illustration of another point she makes: the similarity of these three different suits focuses your attention on how different these three men really look. But that's another story.
I should spell out here that it's possible, and likely, that my association of ideas here was mostly a coincidence based on the very first glimpse, and the mood they were really going for with this costume is nothing more than humility and grief. The concept of a suit is not just texture and colour and visual simplicity: the complicated, multi-layered inner construction that uses the unique structural properties of wool cloth to create that illusion of panther-like simplicity is important, and tailoring is not being used in that way for this costume, at least not visibly. Other costumes have more fit-and-cut going on than this one.
But, either way. The drastic visual contrast is telling us that we are down to business now, the setup is over, it's all unwind from here.
So, I called this the mourning suit, since that's what he's mostly doing in this series of scenes, and I can't resist the opportunity for a pun that goes with the colour scheme.
And I felt like I was being told: now we find out who he really is and what he does when the chips are down. I for one was delighted to see that "who he really is" still includes "hilarious bitch", among other things. Pour one out for Lady Chiedi. Changheng is right there. The grey underlayer has a subtle pattern.
He continues to wear this right through episodes 34 (this beautiful scene where he tries to be a dick and then silently concedes Shangque's point). The dark top layer is split at the sides, which creates this cute fanned-out tail, like a bird.
Shangque is such a good friend.
The breakdown in Ep 35. This was the nearest I could find to a full-length view of this outfit that's close enough to see anything.
It's still with us when a revelation triggers "RTFM: The Comeback" (see this):
In another visually shocking departure from everything we've seen before: there's no long under-sleeve covering the wrists. The big sleeves just fall back as the 'rescue' theme rises in the music.
The goodbye snog. This grey underlayer actually seems to be two layers, which brings this to the usual number of visible layers, it's just that the inner layer hasn't got the high neck we were seeing before, and the top layer goes under the belt rather than over.
The dramatic exit - and I was delighted to see that as well as "the bitchy part" and "the part that Reads The Fucking Manual and compares it with the data", we also still have "the dramatic flouncy part" of his personality.
Minus glitter, dramatic eyeliner, rivers of velvet or clouds of gauze, he's still backing himself to seize the situation by the throat, and I love that for him.
After this, it isn't worn again.
Anyway: the point of this costume is to pack an emotional punch by its contrast to everything else, and it does that very well.

I suspect that this impression that certain fibres only come in certain form is also responsible for the way most people mix up fibres and weaves and don't realise the terms refer to two different aspects of fabric categorisation. People say cotton and think plainweave quilting cotton, they say things like linen and satin in one breath. I have, in fact, seen and touched wool gauze with my own eyes and my own hands. In fabric sample form. I used to work in a fabric factory, taking care of the database of fabric samples we used to refer back to when making fabric and checking if everything was correct. In the three to four years I worked there, I don't think we ever made that wool gauze, but IT'S STILL POSSIBLE. People just forgot it's possible, have no idea what to do with it, and no one orders it being made. Also, funnily enough, being handmade in some cases is very much why some of these fabrics could be so fine yet still strong. Machine processing fibre is harsher on it.
One side effect of my research for this novel being steeped heavily in textile history is my swelling disgust with modern fabrics.
Firstly they're so thin? Like most things you see in Old Navy or even department stores might as well be tissue paper?? Even some branded sports t-shirts I've bought in recent years (that are supposed to be 'official apparel' and allegedly decent quality) are definitely not going to hold up more than a year or two without getting little holes from wear.
This side of even two hundred years ago fabrics were made to be used for YEARS, and that's with wearing them way more often because you only owned like three sets of clothes. They were thick and well made and most importantly made to LAST. And they were gorgeous?? Some of the weaves were so fine and the drape so buttery we still don't entirely know how these people managed to make them BY HAND. Not to mention intricate patterning and details that turned even some simple garments into freaking ART.
I know this is not news, the fast fashion phenomenon is well documented. Reading so much about the amazing fabrics we used to create and how we cherished and valued them, though, is making it hard not to mourn what we lost to mass production and capitalism. Not just the quality of the clothing and fabrics themselves, but the generations of knowledge and techniques that are just gone. It makes me what to cry.

Further thoughts:
Polyester, nylon etc are plastics. They don't breathe or wick away moisture well. Don't choose them for summer projects, especially not if you're prone to sweating and overheating.
Lighterweight breezy wovens are better in hot weather than skintight knits. Try switching from T-shirts and tank tops to natural fibre blouses / shirts, and thank me later. 😁
Personally, my sensory issues are precisely with the plastics (atopic ecsema, my skin is sensitive to their plastickyness). Usually they don't feel softer to me unless it's actually a plush fabric. Microfibre, rather than just polyester, and even then I'm obliged to be ashamed to say real fur feels better to me. Flipping and feeling through satin or gauzy garments in a thrift shop, I would always inevitably land on the rare actually silk one, or a rayon one. So it's not a universal truth that polyester's better for sensory reasons. Just like a cotton gauze and a cotton canvas are two very different things... fibre content does not tell you everything in this way. "Use fabrics you like" is the one universal truth when it comes to sensory issues! And another very good reason to shop in local shops or thrift shops, if you have access to any.
Also, because they're not good at breathing and wicking away moisture, the plastics are equally not great for really keeping you warm in cold weather, again, especially if you're prone to sweating. Speaking from personal experience here - they just make me warm and sweaty quickly, and then, being sweaty with my sweat trapped against my body, I quickly get cold again instead.
Wool is unbeatable in the cold. It's unfortunately pricey, but blends that are about 75-80% wool are a bit more affordable I think, and should still do the job wool is great at. (I actually have this experience with yarn and a RTW sweater and "pashmina" more than fabric, so, sorry, this is a bit of guesswork. The absolute best pashmina I have - lightweight yet amazingly warm - is one actually made of cashmere and silk, but that one was a gift. 😅)
Linen is unbeatable when it comes to being pleasant in summer. It tends to be rather stiff when new and slowly soften with wear and laundering. You can buy linen blends with viscose/rayon, which are (I think?) more afforable, soft and drapey right from the start, a bit less prone to wrinkling like there's no tomorrow, and still feel great.
I live in metric land. We don't use oz/sqyd, we use g/m2. And we don't shorten it to the weight unit only. For reference, I think quilting / craft cottons are somewhere in the 115-140 g/m2 range. Cotton twill in 160 g/m2 is the lighterweight version used for scrubs; for a more hardwearing version definitely go above c. 240 g/m2. - I'm currently a bit confused by "4 oz denim". 160 g/m2 is 4,7 oz and I wouldn't really call that a denim; plain old 4 oz is c. 135 g/m2, which is in plain old quilting cotton range, and I'd seriously hesitate to call a cotton twill in this weight anything approaching "denim". Having tried the conversions from oz, I'm... honestly baffled as to why it remains in use like this because it's a much larger unit than grams, and therefore must be quite clunky for differentiating between weights. Especially at the lower end, in lighterweight fabrics, I feel like it's all the decimal points that get left off that make all the difference.
Also, the reason silk uses different units may have something to do with the fact different fibres behave differently at the same weight, so it's not always the weight itself that tells you what to expect. Some fibres are "heavier", others are "lighter". Silk is a particularly lightweight fibre, so fabrics with a certain "hand" will be lighter than they would be in, say, cotton.
From all of the above, my personal rule of thumb for online fabric shopping is: rely on e-shops that tell you as many of the technical details as possible (exact fibre content in percentages, weight, preferably also specific weave / fabric type), rather than ones that just wax poetical about the fabric's properties. (The usual suspect is the word "silky", heh. That hides a multitude of sins.) The former know what they're doing, the latter are just trying to sell you something and may not be telling the full truth.
How to choose fabrics for projects (a list of advice and comments)
-Use your project to judge what fabric you want to use! For instance, if you are making a summer shirt you should use a lighter material that has a texture like sheeting rather than flannel or wool. If your pattern plans for stuff cut on a bias (sideways across the fabric), take that into account when you choose the fabric!
-A lot of formal from-store patterns will suggest appropriate fabric types for that pattern. Consider their advice, but feel free to discard it if you find a fabric you like better that will still work. (Just make sure that the fabric will work! You don’t want to end up with the equivalent of a swimsuit made of flannel!)
-Thick (like fleece), heavy (like heavy denim or canvas), very stretchy (like t-shirt jersey), or slippery (like polyester) fabrics are harder to work with. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t use them, but you might want to get a little experience before you tackle them.
-Choose fabrics that you can wash, and wash them before you use them! Hanging to dry in a steamy bathroom will help a lot with wrinkles if you don’t have an iron.
-Poly-fleece aside, choose fabrics that do NOT have polyester or other synthetics in them, in many cases the polyester is being used as a filler. For instance, if you are making a shirt, look for your chosen weave (flannel, medium weights, twill ect) as 100% cotton, linen or even hemp.
Polyester (and acrylic) are awesome materials - they make wrinkles fall out better and make fabrics softer. And if you have sensory issues, you might decide that you want the blend or something pure polyester! BUT polyester blends will tend to wear out faster.
(What I am trying to say is: choose the content of your fabric with intention and care.)
-Most fabric thickness is measured in oz/square yard. 2.6 oz/sqyd is the thinnest non-fuzzy fabric considered safe to wear or use in stuff like drapes without adding a fire retardant (thinner fabric is a fire hazard). Some fabric mixes are considered safe too, you can look up the standards pretty easily if you are worried. (Just be aware if your life needs to include a light gauze nighty!)
-Heavier fabrics will last longer before the fabric starts to disintegrate. For instance, a 4 oz denim will be lighter and more flexible, but wear through much faster than a 10 or 12 oz denim. (10-12 oz is the typical weight for older jeans, 5 oz jersey is a heavy t-shirt, most cotton sheeting is about 4 oz, plush sweatshirt knits can be 14-20 oz.)
-Silk is weird, its measured in “momme” (mm).
-If you can, support locally owned fabric shops! They tend to have a better quality of fabric and people more knowledgeable if you need to ask questions.
-Look for deals! Thrift stores will often have both clothing and bedding you can pick apart and yardage from closed stores and people’s stashes. Fabric stores will often have remnant piles and stuff (colors and patterns) that are discontinued. By nature of my job I buy fabric by the bolt in plain white and then dye it - that is always also a possibility, too.

Hi! I sew! And this is something that bugs me a lot. I wrote this a while back but it may be useful:
FIBRE vs FABRIC: a quick summary
BASICALLY: Fibre/Material and Fabric are different. It's like the difference between a table and the material of the table.
A table can be constructed from various materials (e.g. wood, metal).
A fabric can be knitted/woven out of various fibres.
The properties of a fabric (how it feels to wear, how it handles) will depend on the fibre and the weave/knit.
Fibres
Are things like cotton, wool, polyester, rayon, silk etc. Aka the material used to make various kinds of fabrics.
Some fibres are natural, some are manufactured (synthetic). Not all synthetic fibres are bad, and some synthetic fibres are biodegradeable.
📌 Here's a very quick rundown (non-exhaustive). I'll stick an infographic below for anyone who's curious.
Natural Fibres
From plants or animals. Biodegradable, comfortable to wear.
Cotton, Linen, Wool, Silk, Bamboo, Jute, Hemp, Ramie
Leather is not a fibre per se but I'm including it here because it's a natural material that lasts a really long time if you take care of it properly. This also applies to real Fur.
Cellulose Fibres
Plant-based synthetic (man-made, manufactured) fibres. Biodegradable, also generally breathable and comfortable to wear.
Viscose, Rayon*, Lyocell (brand name Tencel), Modal, Acetate
*cuprammonium rayon is sometimes found under the brand name Cupro
Other Synthetic Fibres/Materials
Not biodegradable, to my knowledge. May not be very comfortable to wear unless it's a sports fabric.
Polyester, Nylon, Elastane aka Spandex (brand name Lycra), Acrylic, Polyutherane (PU) and vinyl, Microfibre fabrics, etc.
Note that:
Not all polyester and nylon is uncomfortable to wear. We associate polyester with cheap, hot clothing, but many performance (athletic) fabrics are also made with forms of polyester — your moisture-wicking fabrics, swimsuit fabrics, etc.
PU leather / vegan leather is plastic. It's NOT environmentally friendly in its production, and it doesn't last. Yes, they are experimenting with various types of fruit leathers and such but those still have to be mixed with plastic to be produced, and the production process is resource-intensive and expensive. Leather (and its supply chain) are not perfect, but leather is way more environmentally friendly from a longevity point of view.
Fabrics
Are also called textiles. They can be either knitted, or woven using various kinds of weaves. The density of the weave and thickness of the fabric will determine how heavy (weight) the fabric is, and the way it handles.
📌 The names for different types of fabrics are based on their common characteristics (things like weight, material and weave/knit pattern).
Some common fabrics you may have heard of are:
SATIN — usually made of either silk or polyester, woven in a satin weave. People will often say silk when they mean satin, and it drives me nuts.
CHIFFON, ORGANZA, TAFFETA, DUPIONI, JACQUARD, DAMASK — all different types of weaves. They used to be made out of silk, but these days you mostly find them in polyester (or rayon if you're very lucky).
VELVET — Closely woven fabric with a 'pile' on one side. Silk velvet is very rare nowadays just because it's so expensive (it tends to be silk-rayon blends), and it's near impossible to find silk velvets like they had historically. Like most other fabrics, it's mostly been replaced by polyester However, a similar natural-fibre alternative to poly velvet (cotton velveteen) does exist.
DENIM — usually made of cotton or a cotton-blend (e.g. with elastane), in a medium to heavy twill weave, usually in blue/black colours.
JERSEY — is a type of knit. Cotton jersey, silk jersey, polyester jersey, bamboo jersey etc. all exist.
BROADCLOTH — usually cotton or wool, in a tightly woven plain weave, and it's usually light to medium weight. The density of the weave means that it feels very smooth to the touch.
RIPSTOP — nylon fabric that's made to be water resistant and strong.
CAVEAT:
These names often overlap / are mis-used / get mis-translated or have different meanings in different places. So you can look at something labelled "X Type of Fabric" and know what it should "generally" be like, but it's not a hard and fast rule.

TL;DR
Fibres ≠ Fabrics
Fibre composition is what you want to pay attention to when shopping. Fabric terminology probably doesn't matter so much for the average consumer of mass-manufactured clothing.
If you're environmentally conscious and/or want more comfortable and breathable clothes, try to stick to natural or cellulose fibres.
PU leather and vegan leather are plastic. They are not good for the environment. Please don't buy into this swill. Companies literally only use vegan leather because it's cheaper AND they can attract consumers who mistakenly believe it's better and more ethical.
Stop calling things silk when you mean satin,,
Yes I am frustrated by how much fabric is polyester, but I'm also very annoyed by people who know absolutely nothing about textiles just assuming every fabric word they don't recognize must be plastic.
Big "oooh there are CHEMICALS in my food that I can't pronounce, they must be bad!!" energy.

"Come, Omega".
The voice drifted to her through the darkness, slow and soft. Like a great swath of velvet, floating through the void on some untouchable breeze. It curled around her, brushing across her cheek with a caress that was gentle and familiar. She breathed in contently as it draped about her shoulders, wrapping her in a warm embrace.
A blanket to banish all the bad things.
Her eyelids grew heavy, and her head began to hum with a sleepy haze. Lulled by its comforting weight, she was too numb to notice the way its hold around her was tightening…
"Come away from there, now," it cooed.
Her face creased slightly with drowsy confusion.
But why?
Her thoughts were sluggish, her mind filled with fog. Vaguely, she felt herself being dragged, the way a mother might steer a straying child. As her feet moved clumsily, something was lost from her touch; the sensation of her palms being peeled from the smooth surface of glass.
Now there was nothing. Nothing except the velvet, everywhere and all around.
So…why did she feel so alone?
"It is time for them to go".
Panic cut through the daze in her head with a knife of realisation.
Oh, no.
She didn't want this. She didn't want this AT ALL. She tried to yank the blanket off her, but its tender embrace twisted into rigid restraint.
"You are staying here".
No. NO.
She began to rip at it. She had to get it OFF her. Seething at her retaliation, it began to writhe over her, attempting to smother her into submission. As if flung into a churning sea of satin, she spluttered and flailed against it, desperately fighting to stay afloat.
Anguish snapped inside her like a metal coil wound too tight, and she howled at the darkness. "NO! I WANT TO GO WITH THEM! WHY CAN'T I GO WITH THEM?"
A wave of cold silk swept over her head, submerging her. Shock rocketed up her spine as she felt it rush into her opened mouth and plunge down her throat. She gasped involuntarily, and nothing but fabric inflated her lungs. Her chest seared with agony.
She was drowning.
Gripped now with hopeless abandon, she tore at it, her fingernails splintering as they raked across unyielding fibres. Impatient with her defiance, it knocked her over and pinned her down with brutal ease, the vastness of it unending, the weight of it overwhelming. The seams that pressed against her frayed, allowing loosened threads to weave into needle-like points that poked into her flesh with careless cruelty.
She froze at the threat, tears streaming down her face. They were everywhere, all over, and they promised a hot, piercing sort of pain.
Her hands trembled as she forced herself to let go, blood oozing from her fingertips. Eyes squeezed shut, she willed herself to stay still, perfectly, perfectly still, but, her body was betraying her. Tremoring with the terror of anticipation, she hoped the numbness would reclaim her. She hoped for obliviousness, for a drug-induced miasma, anything. But even as the burning in her chest reached unbearable, she somehow knew not even suffocation would offer an escape.
After an excruciating delay, the voice finally answered, drifting lazily around her. Slow, and soft. Light and unburdened. Like a great swath of velvet, totally unconcerned by the child bleeding on its fringes and choking on its hem.
"You already know why," it said.
Thousands of razor-sharp points split open her skin, and Omega wished she had the air to scream.

Omega glanced at the chrono. Three more hours.
She moved her piece on the board. The board, of course, being Gonky's head. And the move, interestingly, being the absolute worst move she could make. She enjoyed playing games with Wrecker, but unbeknownst to him, this was her favoured terrain, and he was utterly outmatched. Just as he had used a smoke grenade when training her to disarm explosives, she, too, was pulling her tactical punches. For now, at least.
Wrecker grinned at her apparent 'blunder' and made a relatively decent counter-move. She sucked air through her teeth with mock dismay.
"Oh, rats," she muttered, folding her arms and cupping her face with one hand, feigning a look of deep concentration.
"HA!" Wrecker slapped his knee triumphantly at her reaction. "Betcha didn't see THAT coming!"
Omega smirked behind her hand. As she was deciding by which route she would allow Wrecker to win, Echo approached, two ration bars in his hand.
"Chow time," he announced.
"Aw, YEAH! I'm starvin'!" Wrecker leapt from his seat and snatched up his portion enthusiastically, demolishing it in one go and grunting with pleasure.
Omega accepted the remaining ration bar with a little less gusto. Just looking at it made her stomach churn uneasily; she really didn't feel like eating. Unfortunately, she could feel the heat of Echo's expectant gaze and realised he was waiting on her.
Stars…
Mustering considerable effort, she bit off the end and chewed mechanically. "Mm," she vocalised with false satisfaction, lifting her face to show him a mask of delight that she hoped was convincing.
Apparently appeased, Echo turned, headed for the cockpit. Keeping her eyes on his back, Omega broke off a small section from the other end of the ration bar and thrust the large, middle portion out towards Wrecker. He opened his mouth wide to loudly express his excitement but Omega silenced him, pressing her finger against her lips and jerking her head urgently in Echo's direction.
Mouthing an exaggerated 'oh', Wrecker took the hint. Gingerly, he accepted the rest of her ration bar, and then immediately stuffed it into his mouth quietly as he could. Meaning, of course, not quietly at all.
Omega grimaced as Echo stopped dead in his tracks, swivelling his head to eye them suspiciously. Wrecker put on a rather over-the-top air of innocence, leaning back in his chair with his hands behind his head while Omega made a show of eating the last morsel of her meal.
"Mm, famks, Echo!" she said, mouth full, returning her attention to the game as if nothing was amiss. On the edge of her peripheral vision, she watched Echo hesitate, but he said nothing as he left.
Once gone, she exhaled with relief and fixed Wrecker with a scolding look. He chuckled and gave a rather sheepish shrug.
Maybe she'd let him lose the match, after all.

She took a fleeting look at the chrono… Two more hours.
"Omega, could you pass me the--".
Before he could finish, Omega placed the welder in Tech's open hand. He hummed appreciatively and brought it up through the tangle of wires hanging above them to reach the motherboard. It sizzled where he pressed its stylus against metal.
They were both lying on their backs, crammed together underneath the Marauder's flight console. The underside panel had been removed, granting them access to the inner circuitry of the navigation computer. Omega couldn't lay side-by-side with Tech because the breadth of his shoulder would keep her from seeing up into the narrow compartment. So, she had wiggled herself into an oblique angle, the crown of her head practically pressed against his ear.
He lowered the welder.
"Now I need the--".
Omega took the welder and replaced it with the oscilloscope attachment. He glanced at it in his hand and, again, hummed pleasantly at her unerring aptitude.
"Here," Omega offered, reaching up to hold the mass of cables to one side as Tech attempted to manoeuvre it into place.
"Take care not to touch the dynoram," he warned. "It is live, and if you are electrocuted, I will never hear the end of it". The comment was made with equal parts sarcasm and seriousness. Omega giggled.
"Hunter would kill you," she playfully teased.
"Indeed," he replied, dryly, "that is, assuming neither Echo nor Wrecker got to me first. Or any of the other life-forms you have seemingly endeared yourself to. In fact, Hunter may have to wait in line, as there would undoubtably be a queue".
"I better not touch the dynoram, then".
"Please don't".
Omega grinned.
Tech clipped the electrodes into place and checked the readout on his datapad. "Excellent, the auxiliary power supply has been restored".
Working in tandem, they stuffed the wires back in before closing the compartment; Tech held the panel steady in its frame while Omega used a power tool to bolt it in place.
"Perfect," he said, shuffling out from under the console. He offered Omega his hand as she crawled out after him, and he pulled her easily to her feet.
"Alright! What's next on the list?" she asked eagerly, dusting off her tunic.
"Actually, that is the last of the maintenance for today," he told her as he packed away his tools.
"Oh," she vocalised, obviously deflated. "So, what are you going to do now?"
"I was going to catalogue our most recent combat data".
"Can I help?"
He looked down at her. "It…isn't really a two-person task," he said, a little apologetically.
"Oh". Omega watched him awkwardly as he stowed his tool kit. Wringing her hands together with mounting restlessness, she cast her eyes around the room in the hope she'd spot something to occupy herself with. Seeing nothing, she returned her gaze to Tech, who had settled himself in the chair next to the central comms and was busily typing on his datapad.
"I-I guess I'll go see what the others are doing…" she muttered quietly to his back.
Head bowed, she wondered if he even noticed her leave.

Omega stared at the chrono. One more hour.
Lying in Wrecker's lap, she tried to focus on the Holoshow they were watching. It was a cooking competition program. Wrecker was certainly enjoying it, making comments about how good the food looked and which dishes he'd like to eat (unsurprisingly, all of them), and laughing heartily at the absurd degree of mayhem that ensued when things inevitably didn't go to plan. One contestant's Devaronian souffle had emerged from the oven 'not quite fluffy enough'. The way the amateur chef was staring at it, eyes wide, hands pressed into the sides of his horrified face, one might assume the souffle had just spoken to him and now he was questioning his own sanity.
At the very least, Omega was grateful for the distraction it offered; Wrecker seemed utterly oblivious to her own plight. While she could feel the deep rumbles of his stomach against her back, likely enticed by the delicious display, her own was bubbling with nauseating apprehension. It felt like she had swallowed several spoons, and they were trying to dig their way out, scraping languidly against the walls of her guts. It was unbelievably uncomfortable.
Good.
Hunter strolled into the room from the gangway and Omega determinedly avoided his eye contact.
"Alright, you two, your sleep cycles are up".
Omega whined in unison with Wrecker as Hunter switched off the Holoshow.
"Aw, c'mon, Sarge, at least let us finish the episode!" Wrecker moaned.
Hunter shook his head. "Not up for debate," he stated. "Omega, go brush your teeth".
"But, Hunter, I'm not even--"
"Teeth. Bed. Now." he ordered.
She made a sour face like she'd been forced to suck an unripe meiloorun, and hopped off Wrecker's lap with an audible huff. They watched her stalk toward the refresher, shoulders hitched high and tiny hands bunched into fists, the door hissing closed behind her.
As soon as she was hidden in the private confines of the 'fresher, her façade faltered and she dug her fingers into her hairline. The indignation melted away, like wet paint in the rain, and she sagged against the cold metal wall, her body buckling under the gravity of her own anxiety. Vaguely, she could hear Wrecker and Hunter arguing, their voices vibrating through the durasteel.
"The kid's been through hell and back," she heard Hunter saying, "what she needs is rest".
"We are resting!" Wrecker retorted.
"Wrecker, I meant sleep. Can't you tell she's exhausted?".
"Hmph, she seems fine to me," he grumbled.
At the mention of sleep, Omega felt her diaphragm contract against her will, drawing in an involuntary sob. Clapping a hand over her mouth, she begged her legs to bear her weight as she moved to the basin, stepping up on a stool so she could reach the sink. Quickly, she turned the tap on and hung her head over it as hot tears pooled in front of her vision. She hoped the noise would drown out the sound of her sniffling. The last thing she needed right now was for Hunter to know she was crying.
When she finally looked up, she found herself staring blearily at her own haggard image in the mirror. Was that even her? She frowned at the redness of her eyes, and the dark circles blooming on the skin beneath them.
When will this stop?
There was a knock at the door and she visibly jumped.
"Omega," Hunter crooned, "c'mon, hurry it up, kiddo".
She glowered at him through the wall, but knew he wasn't the real subject of her frustration…
Despite her best efforts to draw out the process of brushing her teeth, Hunter eventually tired of her procrastination and fetched her from the 'fresher, escorting her to the Gunner's mount. He waited patiently outside the curtain for her to change into pyjamas before climbing the ladder to tuck her into bed.
"Alright. Got everything you need?" he asked, pulling the standard-issue GAR blanket up to her chin. She nodded wordlessly, not looking at him. There was a moment of terse stillness and she could sense Hunter frowning over her.
Oh, no. He knows. He can tell.
She closed her eyes, attempting to hide whatever clues he might be able to see there. Then there was the gentle feeling of his fingers as he carded them through her hair, and she nearly wept at the softness of his touch, the concern of his gesture. Afraid he would leave but terrified he might stay, she shifted away from him and onto her side. His hand retreated from her as though it had been stung, and she ground her teeth against a pang of regret.
"G'night, kid," she heard him say reservedly.
There was a flicking sound as he turned off her fairy lights, and she watched the room sideways as it was thrown into semi-darkness, the blue of hyperspace cut into thin ribbons by the slats of her blinds.
"Sleep well".
He drew the curtain behind him and she listened to him walk away, the space between them growing wider. A miserable pout warped her features as she felt his absence more keenly with each step he took.
If only he understood…she couldn't do that at all.

Omega waited. Five minutes. Ten minutes. She stared up at the ceiling, watching it ripple with the rivulets of passing systems.
Twenty minutes. Forty minutes. When the pain that gripped her empty insides was no longer sufficient to keep her awake, she quietly clambered to her feet. Time for Plan B. Clutching at her own sleeves, she stood in the centre of the room, leaning slightly against the back of the Gunner's chair.
An hour. Two hours. There she remained, standing doggedly against encroaching unconsciousness. Every now and then, her head drooped against her chest and her legs caved at the knees, but the sensation of slipping drew her back from the edge.
Three hours. Four. Omega groaned quietly as she straightened yet again. She was tired. She was tired of being tired. Tired of the struggle, of the fight. She wanted to just give up, she wanted to fall into that void and sleep forever. But the knowledge of what lingered there...in that beckoning darkness. The thing that waited for her…
Against her will, the world faded away.
Omega hit the floor with a soft thwack, her jaw snapping shut as it impacted her mattress, forcing her teeth to sink into the soft flesh of her tongue. She jolted upright with the pain and tasted coppery blood.
Maker…
She rubbed her eyes. She couldn't go on like this. How many hours had it been? She just wanted the cycle to be over already so that she didn't have to be alone anymore. Making some excuse to herself about stretching out sore limbs, she peeked out from behind her curtain and surveyed the common area. No one seemed to stir.
Taking Lula with her, she descended the ladder and padded barefoot to the set of racks immediately to her left. Wrecker was sprawled on the bottom bunk, his blanket discarded on the floor. Just as she did every cycle, she gingerly tucked Lula into the crook of his elbow. As if he could sense its presence, even through the layers of his slumber, Wrecker curled over a little to press his face against it. Omega smiled softly. It meant more to her than he knew…
She looked up. From this angle, she could see blankets spilling over the sides of the top bunk, but not its occupant. She guessed it was Echo. His cybernetics made lying on a hard flat surface uncomfortable, so he usually slept atop whatever mound of bedding he could build in order to soften the contact. Often, he complained about how he missed his hammock from Kamino.
Continuing her patrol, she came across Tech, slouched in one of the chairs by the common room console, silhouetted by the light of the screen he had left on. He was fast asleep, snoring quietly, a gadget in his hand. He did this a lot. Tech could rarely be corralled onto a bunk, usually because he just couldn't stand to put a project down half-finished. Omega regarded him for a moment. It was one of the rare times in which he looked truly calm, his awakened face almost constantly taut with stringent focus. Deftly she managed to pry the whatever-it-was from his loose grip and lay it down. Then, she retrieved Wrecker's blanket from the floor and gently draped it over him as best she could, standing on tippy toes to slip the goggles off his face. She nodded to herself with some satisfaction. That was better.
Reluctantly leaving Tech behind, she moved further down the gangway. The door to the cockpit was closed and she pressed her hands and face against the durasteel. Behind it, she heard nothing at all. Hunter must be in there. Whether awake or dozing, she couldn't tell. He could do both silently.
Resting her forehead against the cold metal, she lingered there, almost wishing he would sense her. Briefly, she thought about going in, but her muscles spasmed in protest. Exhaling with exasperation at her own baffling stubbornness, she turned around and managed to take three steps back the way she came before she stopped. The distance between her and the Gunner's mount stretched out dizzily and she paled at the prospect of returning to it.
A guttural retching noise unexpectedly cut through the quiet, and she blinked with surprise. It was followed by muted coughing, and she realised it was coming from the refresher. Omega crept towards it and listened by the door. There was nothing for several seconds, and then she heard an unmistakable gasping sound. Glancing at the control panel, she could see it hadn't been locked, and without thinking, she reached for the release switch. With a barely perceptible hiss, the door slid open, and the bright light of the 'fresher interior spiked at her fatigued eyes intrusively. Ignoring the stabbing pain in her head, she tentatively took a step inside and squinted against the glare.
Her heart sank at the sight that greeted her.
"Echo…?"

learning about fabrics was a mistake. ‘draped in silks and satins’ satin is not a fibre type you are thinking of silk and more silk, also we are the fantasy arctic circle at at war with fantasy Asia so wearing imported silk would be most likely frowned upon in the king’s court. ‘embroidered in a fine brocade’ brocade is woven, and at this point, also made of silk from fantasy Asia, see above. ‘peasant roughspun’ ma’am you have basically set your fantasy novel in the industrial revolution which killed the cottage weaving industry in favour of the increasingly mechanized looms that more or less lead the charge or industrialization, never mind that even prior to that weaving was considered highly killed and valuable labour.

ive not decided yet if theyre a kid or an adult (they do look quite scrawny) but i was thinking theyre into fabrics, sewing, weaving, knowing about different kinds of fibres, knowing how to handle and care for wool and satin and the like! either as a hobby, a field of study, or a full on job (tba)
i dont think anyone knows about their spideryness but i like the idea of them having one or two roommates
as far as special abilities go, their web can fluff up! its very good for making hammocks and nets to safely catch people with. very disconcerting to the average citizen, though.
theyre on the more friendly and familiar side, mostly focusing on getting people out of dangerous situations and rescue rather than fighting villains.
