It's interesting to hear this from someone who has a clue how it works. From my point of view, I'm looking at someone like Kaori Sakamoto and thinking "why is a grown woman with this stunning physical presence and musicality always dressed as a little girl or as a femme fatale, and ok this is good jazz, but it's the same jazz, and the men get to do all these ridiculous movie acts?" And watching all the Asian teams and feeling disappointed that i wasn't seeng ANY different music or aesthetic approach. I was genuinely wondering what the explanation was.
It sounds like this is not going to change unless the fans make a fuss about it.
we aren’t ready for the conversation about how figure skating fans perpetuate some crazy intense misogyny by way of enforced gender performance. but oh boy, if you’re not femme or you like masc women and you want skating to be more than Pretty Delicate Ice Princess? if you are actually fine with “empty program except for quads because fuck yeah that’s cool as shit”? if your standard for skating skills is more than Does Girl Pretty Gliding On Razor Blade? if you like the sheer athleticism and you want women to have the option of training to achieve it at the expense of looking graceful and elegant?
lol. lmao. get ready for an endless stream of one-sided criticism for anybody who doesn’t look beautiful enough.

I think I might be with you on this one. As a casual fan I often watch women's routines and get frustrated because I feel like they're being artistically limited by feminine performance, in the costumes, music choices, and expression. I just have a sense they could do so much more that could be so much more varied and compelling.

Hey, figure skating people. If there's an earthquake in Japan and you are skating at the time, what do you do? Go to the middle of the ice? Get off it? Or what?

one of the best fics I've ever read
It's Viktuuri. Please for the love of God, I cannot recommend it enough. After 20 years of reading fanfics, this is the closest thing to my own sensibilities I have ever ever seen.

I read a (really good) viktuuri fanfic which spends a bit of time on the process of Victor learning Japanese and at the end we discover he has picked up the local accent. It made me nostalgic for the sports stars of my youth - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Peter Schmeichel sounding much more Mancunian than I ever could, Rubens Barrichello suddenly talking with a stereo accent (Brazilian and Scots) when he was driving for Stewart. Then I thought of Eric Cantona and his improvised slam poetry:
"When seagulls follow the trawler
It is because they know
SARDINES
will be thrown into the sea.
Thank you very much."
And then he left. You can't fish for sardines with a trawler, and he definitely didn't know what "trawler" meant, but that didn't matter. The assembled press didn't know either, and were too busy pretending not to know exactly what he meant, which was, in summary "you are a bunch of parasitical hypocrites, I'm glad I kicked the hooligan, you are delighted I kicked the hooligan, and we all know it". I also learned an important life lesson from this moment, which is that "Thank you very much" is a great way to say "this conversation is over, and I have already left".

More hilarious manga fonts. I love this detail.
Kiyoka's font grows little serifs because the words are so uncomfortable to get out, and Miyo's goes all wobbly in response.

A very short list of words I seem to have randomly learned without trying from double-language subtitles:
是 shì
It means "yes", and "to be", and "so be it" although most of the time in historicals it actually means "aye, aye, Sir".
好 hao
It means "fine", "okay", "alright", and "good", or quite often it actually seems to mean "if you say so". I kind of like the character for this one because the pictographic definition of "good, fine, okay" is a woman with a baby.
多谢 duōxiè,
it means "thank you very much". This goes in the box called "I don't know if this is something people normally say, or if it's only for historicals". In award shows people say 谢谢 xièxie.
and
王妃 wángfēi
it means Princess.
Recognising some forms of address is really useful for getting hints of what's going on that the subtitles don't give you. These include didi, or a vocative a-die, which mean "younger brother", jiejie and a-jie which mean "older sister", and furen and fu(jun? not sure of the second syllable) for "wife" and "husband", specifically when they are contrasted with some other option that could be used.
For instance I am pretty sure that in this line, below, 妹妹 mèimei "younger sister" is being used to be pretentious, presumptuous, and ingratiating in a really specific and rather funny way which the subtitle doesn't attempt to translate:
Tumblr media
I recognised it by ear and then wound back to check the subtitle.
I also discovered that addressing your husband by his actual full name (not Surname + Courtesy Name but Surname + Name) apparently has precisely the same meaning as the equivalent in English, namely "you're ANNOYING me!"
This show is pretty entertaining

It has come to my attention that some of you lot are so absurdly young you might have missed out not only on the magnificence that was David Bowie, but also on the Canadian Astronaut and his Space Guitar, the best Bowie cover ever made

I wonder what Yurii! On Ice fanfiction authors think the word "geezer" means.

This is quite silly (with some mild angst and hurt-comfort) but I really enjoyed writing it.
I thought season 2 of the anime didn't work at all, the pacing was all over the place, the plot had various problems, the action scenes were a bit tedious, and we totally lost sight of all the fun things that were going on in the characters' minds, but I still really like the main characters and want to play with them.

Totally agree. I'm hoping the manga is much better. I think this part of the story didn't lend itself that well to being super condensed, and agree Kiyoka's character was lost completely. Miyo mostly made reasonable sense to me but it went way too fast and I kept feeling that it was dragging horribly and that we'd missed everything important.
Is there a big dip in quality between seasons 1 and 2 or is it just me???
Miyo fully awakening her power so fast felt like it was paced weird. So many of her scenes start strong with her trying to step up only to get quickly overshadowed by other characters, or needing to be rescued. I feel like Kiyoka became a set piece that just got moved around to where he needed to be. They both felt so flat and one-note

I watched a few eps of this on YouTube and I lost it at the subtitle "betrothal beast"
No woman from the Qiao family is ever, EVER going to forget or forgive this guy's shitty weasel present
