Reading some biographies about the Kennedys and I just wanna know how the holidays or big events were split with the in laws for some random reason.
Like it seems JFK spent time with Jackie’s family at Newport but the majority of holidays and just hanging out was with his family.
Ethel barely saw her family lol from what I read. Bobby sometimes stayed with them but not as much.
Joan and Ted??? Seems like her family was non existent lol.
Patrica and Peter is the same way (which I don’t blame them lol)
Eunice and Sarge are a mix. They lived in Maryland so it was close to the Shrivers but the again seems like they spent more time with her family.
Joe and Rose seemed like the type of in laws who want their kids with them at holidays all the time lol. I think If Kathleen had lived she would’ve been different since she would’ve been living in England.
With Ethel and Bobby, the reason why they didn't spend a lot of time with the Skakels was due to her mom and dad dying in 1955, there wasn't that binding in-laws factor there. Joan didn't have a great relationship with her mother, that could be part of why Ted and Joan spent holidays and stuff with his family more. I can see Rose and Joe being like that along with them having the Palm Beach estate so for Christmas especially that was probably quite a good reason to go there.

Who do you think was Joseph Kennedy's favorite son in law? What about daughter in law?
Daughter-in-law would be Jackie. I’m not really sure about son-in-law but maybe Sarge Shriver? He did work for Joe Sr. before marrying Eunice.

A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver

A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver by Mark Shriver
In this intimate portrait of an extraordinary father-son relationship, Mark K. Shriver discovers the moral principles that guided his legendary father and applies them to his own lifeWhen Sargent "Sarge" Shriver—founder of the Peace Corps and architect of President Johnson's War on Poverty—died in 2011 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer's, thousands of tributes poured in from friends and strangers worldwide. These tributes, which extolled the daily kindness and humanity of "a good man," moved his son Mark far more than those who lauded Sarge for his big-stage, headline-making accomplishments. After a lifetime searching for the path to his father's success in the public arena, Mark instead turns to a search for the secret of his father's joy, his devotion to others, and his sense of purpose. Mark discovers notes and letters from Sarge; hears personal stories from friends and family that zero in on the three guiding principles of Sarge's life—faith, hope, and love—and recounts moments with Sarge that now take on new value and poignancy. In the process, Mark discovers much about himself, as a father, as a husband, and as a social justice advocate. A Good Man is an inspirational and deeply personal story about a son discovering the true meaning of his father's legacy.

What are some of the best Kennedy documents/films/biographies? I'd really love to learn more about the clan 😊
Hi there ! Sorry for my (very) late reply, I’m the worst - I see a message and then I forget all about it :(
Okay so here’s a list of my favorite stuff (**will update) :
Biographies
- The Joan Kennedy Story : Living with the Kennedys, by Marcia Chellis (1985) : Marcia was Joan’s personal assistant for 2-3 years, starting in 1979. They went through the 1980 presidential campaign together. I know Joan felt betrayed by the book saying : “I tried to talk her out of it three years ago when she told me the notes she took on the 1980 campaign would be used in a book. I told her I felt so betrayed. I think it’s a real breach of confidentiality” - but I gotta say, it’s really great if you want to feel like an insider. It’s a must-read, in my opinion. But I don’t agree with how she did all of this - Joan was her friend and she trusted her but she ended up betraying her for money… yeah. - Jackie, Ethel, Joan : The Women of Camelot, by J. Randy Taraborrelli (2000) : “Three women who married into America’s royal family and became forever linked in legend. Set against the panorama of explosive American history, this unique story offers a rarely-seen look at the relationship shared among the three women – during the Camelot years and beyond. Whether dealing with their husbands’ blatant infidelities, stumping for their many political campaigns, touring the world to promote their family’s legacy, raising their children, or confronting death, the Kennedy wives did it all with grace, style and dignity”- The Kennedy Women : The Saga of an American Family, by Laurence Leamer (1994). 800-page book with rather tiny writing, but it goes back to the Kennedy’s ancestors and talks about every single Kennedy woman. - After Camelot : A Personal History of the Kennedy Family – 1968 to the Present, by J. Randy Taraborrelli (2012) : Taraborrelli’s books tend to be a bit on the gossipy side, but I kinda like his style lol plus he does A LOT of research for his books (the source notes are always like, 40 pages long). The book is divided into the following parts : The lengthy an detailed tome is divided into the following parts: Jackie, Eunice, Sarge, Ted, Ethel, Jackie/Ari/The Lawfords, Sargent Tries Again, The Third Generation In Trouble, Poor Ari, Rosemary and Rose, Shriver for President, Ted’s 1980 campaign, David’s Story, Kennedy Upheaval, Caroline/John/Maurice, William Kennedy Smith and the Palm Beach Scandal, Kennedy Wives Old and New, Jackie: Her Final Years, John and Carolyn, Michael’s Story, A Peaceful Time, Camelot Loses its Prince, Transitions, and Looking Ahead. - Peter Lawford : The Man Who Kept the secrets, by James Spada (1991). (See the review that I made about a week ago). - Joan : The Reluctant Kennedy, by Lester David (1974) : It’s really interesting because he interviewed her a lot for it and you can learn about her childhood, her girlhood, etc. It’s really the only book that is strictly dedicated to her (well Marcia Chellis’ book kinda is too, but it’s more like a tell all, not a biography and it only talks about Joan’s life from 1979 to 1983). The only thing is that since the book was published in the 70s, it doesn’t cover the rest of Joan’s life. - The Other Mrs. Kennedy : Ethel Skakel Kennedy - An American Drama of Power, Privilege, and Politics, by Jerry Oppenheimer (1994). I didn’t think I’d be into this book at first, since I’ve never been particularly interested in Ethel. But it really is a page turner. - The Last Brother, by Joe McGinnis (1993). Excellent book about Ted. I really enjoyed the fact that there is no ass kissing at all (compared to the ‘Last Lion’, published by the Boston Globe). It really reveals the dysfunctionality of the family. I also like how he analyzes Ted, he’s very interesting, psychologically-speaking, cause he was trapped from the beginning: someone (…Joe Kennedy) chose a life path for him and that was it. The Washington Post trashed the book but don’t listen to them lol- The Kennedy Curse, by Edward Klein. (2003)
Documentaries/Movies/Series
- The Kennedys (2011). Watch here : http://www.watchfree.to/watch-27654b-The-Kennedys-tv-show-online-free-putlocker.html#close-modal - I’m currently rewatching it actually. It’s 8 episodes and it starts with JFK’s election and ends with JFK’s assassination. Greg Kinnear is excellent as JFK, and so is Barry Pepper as Bobby. As for Katie Holmes, sometimes she’s good and sometimes it’s a bit cringy (like when she tries to imitate Jackie’s soft, breathy voice). The new series, The Kennedys : After Camelot (which covers from 1964 to the 1990s I believe), based on J. Randy Taraborrelli’s book, will start in April on Reelz
-The JFK collection– 8 mini movies by the History channel (2013). Disc One contains three films. “JFK: A Personal Story Part 1”, JFK: A Personal Story Part 2 and “Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis”. Disc Two contains four films “John F. Kennedy, Jr.: The Death of an American Prince”, “Joseph Kennedy, Sr.: Father of an American Dynasty”,“Robert F. Kennedy: His Many Sides” and “Ted Kennedy: Tragedy, Scandal, and Redemption” is the story of the life of the youngest Kennedy son, his scandals, and his life in politics. Disc Three contains the last film of the series, “JFK: Three Shots that Changed America.” **I’m afraid you’ll have to buy it, but I got it for pretty cheap on Ebay
- The Lost Kennedy Home Movies (2011).

Attention self obsessed : Sargent Shriver spoke (in 1994) about breaking mirrors and shattering the glass - In our current insanely self absorbed society, please please stop looking at yourself all the time and learn more about the face of your neighbor - spend less time on yourself and more on others. So profoundly real...thank you Sarge - we all miss you. Those who learned from you, that is - we took your lessons into our young adult lives and tried hard to do just this. Let the memories of our fathers and mothers this weekend become what a true Memorial Day ought to look like. Keep these ideals alive. Don’t just honor the country’s women and men for following the orders, which are consistently flawed and doled out by old theories (which were based on lies, as well) by old stubborn men. And so often these out and out lies are based on the Tarzan theory based “Big is better” — “Big, strong, fast, kill those who don’t look or act like us” - Ugg. Gotta start at some point, yes? You brought up John at Kerry’s wedding and it actually made me wonder about something that maybe you can help me with or point to someone who can if you don’t know too much about it.
What are the relationship like for the in-laws with the Kennedys? Like for the original nine sibling how did the sisters get along with their brothers wives? The brothers with the sisters husbands? The next gen spouses and the respective siblings? The cousins with their cousins in-law?
I wonder cause I’ve seen small bits on here that maybe Arnold and Andrew had not exactly pure motives?
This ended up being very long so I'm going to put it under the cut!
With the original nine siblings it kinda depended on the in law and the sibling. At the beginning of Billy and Kick's friendship/relationship it has been said that Joe Jr and Jack didn't really understand why Kick liked him so much, they thought he was kinda stuffy and took himself too seriously. Ethel was beloved by all of the family (people have said that Peter Lawford didn't really like her and thought she was too strict and up tight), she got along with pretty much everyone, and fit right into the family. Jackie had a bit of a tougher time blending into the family, she didn't have the same competitiveness as her in laws and was quite quiet and reserved which the Kennedys aren't but early on built a good relationship with Jean, over time she got along with everyone and didn't have a bad relationship with anyone it just took her a longer time to get there. Joan fit in pretty easily as well and didn't have a problem getting along with anyone really. Generally, with the male in laws, Sarge, Peter, and Steve, Jack was close with all of them and had a good relationship but Ted and Bobby were more distant and didn't have much of a relationship with any of them. I don't think that says anything on either parties, it's just that Jack was very outgoing and was willing to talk to anyone while Bobby liked to keep to himself more. All in all I think as the family got older the relationships evened out and no one had that much of a problem with each other except for the occasional fight or disagreement, I think part of it is also that for a while everyone moved a part from each other, and they didn't have as much close contact with each other. The Shrivers moved around a lot, the RFKs stayed in Virginia mostly, the Lawfords lived in California and then after the divorce Pat moved to NYC with her kids, Ted and Joan lived in Boston and DC, the JFKs lived in New York primarily after 1965, the Smiths were pretty low key but with Steve being Bobby's campaign manager for the '68 election they were traveling a lot.
For the 3rd generation many of them are private citizens so the status of friendships and how people get a long isn't widely known but there were definitely cousins that were very close as kids. Caroline, the Lawford girls and Maria Shriver were very good friends as kids and that has seemed to stay, Kerry and Courtney could also be included in that group. John Jr was close with William Smith, Bobby Jr and Tim and Anthony Shriver. All the RFK siblings were close knit and were kinda their own little group. David had a great friendship with Chris Lawford, they were thick as thieves and stayed that way throughout their childhood and then up until David's death. Chris actually named his son after David. Ted Jr goes on yearly skiing vacations with Anthony Shriver and Bobby Jr with all their kids which has lead to many of them being close as well.
A lot of what's known about the third generation and how they all get along with their in laws and stuff is just kinda rumors and speculation. The thing with Andrew is that he was known to be Bobby Kennedy obsessed and his relationship with Kerry was evidence of that. He took her to Bed Stuy (Bobby helped to create the community there) for their first date, their wedding was at the same church that JFK's funeral was, this article goes in depth on their relationship and details his calculated approach to how he wanted to be attached to the Kennedy family but only in certain ways. With Arnold it's more of just I think after he first met Maria he told people that he met President Kennedy's niece and kind of wore it like it was an achievement or something. I don't think he was as calculated as Andrew, Arnold was shitty for other reasons (ie cheating and fathering a child with their maid and not telling Maria until years later).

do you think Bobby or Sarge Shriver cheated on their wives?
Probably not, no. There are plenty of rumors about Bobby but I think those are more just guilt by association. People assume he must’ve because his brothers did.
