Mini-review:

This is such a nice movie, seriously. I must admit I thought it would be funnier, but it made up for that by making me cry way more than I expected. Also, that cast...just wow. They put together some of the best actors in the industry in one single film, and that alone makes it worth a watch. The characters feel real and lived in, and the movie perfectly captures the chaotic experience of families coming together for Christmas. It has cliches and stuff, of course, but that's exactly what it wants, cause the LGBTQ community also deserves its own Christmas movies. In fact, it's actually better made and told than most of the genre. I hope we keep getting films like Happiest Season, cause watching it was such a joy.

Amazon's miniseries adaptation of Hong Kong-born American author Janice Y.K. Lee's 2016 debut novel The Expatriates is brimming with affluence and high-level production value. Nicole Kidman (also a producer), Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yoo star as a trio of American emigrants living in HK tied together by unfortunate circumstances as we follow a year in their lives. Wang directs all six episodes with a patient style and verve, but there's a lack of urgency to the drama of the characters' unhappiness as they remain almost stuck in grief while muddling through their loss as well-to-do foreigners.
