When we first started training together a year ago, Kati was in a similar position to most people. With a demanding job and a busy family schedule, she had a hard time putting her own needs first. She knew she didn’t have the time to meet with a trainer in person but she took the leap and decided to try out online training. . A year later, I feel like I am working with a totally different person. Completing at least 4 workouts a week and pushing herself to change her nutrition little by little, she didn’t give up her love of baking or force herself to do any crazy workouts she hated. She dug deep, asking the tough questions about what she really wanted, who she wanted to be, and what would it take to get there. She still bakes, but doesn’t rely on it as her only stress relief. She has cut out soda and other, less satisfying things to give herself room for the treats she really enjoys. And she doesn't miss them! She has gained energy, lost over 30 inches and 25 pounds in the past year (and she’s still going strong!)-- but that isn’t what I am most proud of. . The real triumph I have seen is that Kati started out hating the idea of a lot of aspects of a healthy life. The thought of going for a run was nowhere on her radar (something I can agree with 😂). And yet, recently we talked about the possibility of her signing up as a guide runner in races to support blind athletes. Kati has worked on her own mental, emotional, and physical health with such dedication over the past year and she is now taking all that she has learned and finding ways to use it to help others. THAT is why I do what I do as a trainer. . In her own words, when I asked what’s better about her overall wellness and lifestyle since we started working together, she said “Everything. I can’t pinpoint one thing. It’s everything.” As her coach, I am honored to play any role in this journey and I am so looking forward to seeing where she takes things over the course of the next year. As people, we often make the mistake of thinking that big results can only come from big changes, but that couldn't be further from the truth. What we do every day sets the foundation for our lives. It's not the big things like eating a whole pizza in one sitting or running a marathon that make us unfit or fit--it’s the little decisions like switching from soda to sparkling water or eating a candy bar every day out of habit, that have shaped us into who we are. Find the food that ACTUALLY makes you feel good. So often, we reach for things that we think will make us feel good. After all, that hit of dopamine after eating a pint of ice cream is great! ...right? Well, yeah, of course, but how else does it feel? Does it make your stomach hurt? Give you a headache or an energy crash? Does it affect your emotions? Food shouldn’t just feel good when it hits your brain, it should give you energy, vitality, digestive health, AND be a tasty meal. The stigma that healthy food doesn’t taste good or can’t be as filling and rewarding as unhealthy food needs to end. We need to be more attuned to what our bodies are telling us about the food we eat. Today I want to challenge you to take the time to sit with your food, whatever it may be, and let yourself feel what your body is telling you after you eat. If you are trying to lose weight, your biggest focus should be in the kitchen. Getting enough protein and vegetables in your diet is KEY to feeling full, having energy, and getting all the nutrients you need. Today, I started my day with this easy and cheap breakfast--2 hard boiled eggs topped with feta and green onions, a side of sauteed garlicky mushrooms, tomatoes and red onion, and some plain greek yogurt with blueberries. This meal gave me 2.5 servings of fruits/veggies and 20 grams of protein! That’s plenty to power me through some tough training sessions before lunch. WEAKNESS makes me feel STRONG. I never used to be able to hold a plank. My arms would quickly get shakey, my back arched, my hips were too high, and I felt weak. I hated them. After years (literal years) of practice, I can hold a plank without immediately feeling like giving up. My core is stronger. It might look like it's easy now, but I never could have gotten to this point without months and months of planks that felt terrible. As with most good things, getting stronger and fitter feels better when you know how hard you worked for it. Nobody likes to feel weak, but pushing through weakness creates strength and pride. When things in life get hard, do you give up or do you push to do your best? Giving up is giving up on strength. It's giving up on your potential and its giving up on the amazing feeling of doing something you never believed you could. Without all the times I have felt weak, I would never appreciate or know what true strength feels like.
