Australian singer-songwriter Jack Colwell dies aged 34

The Australian music industry is mourning the death of much-loved singer-songwriter Jack Colwell, who died this week at age 34.

The out singer-songwriter self-funded his music as an independent artist and worked for years as a musical director, arranger, teacher and choirmaster.

Jack released his debut single Don’t Cry Those Tears – produced by singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko – in 2015 to critical acclaim. He released his debut studio album Swandream in 2020.

After his death on Thursday, Jack’s friends and music industry peers are grieving the tragic loss of the talented artist.

“One of my favourite people in this whole wide world, who possessed the charm of a thousand princes & a musical spirit like no other, has passed into another realm,” friend and collaborator Sarah Blasko wrote on Instagram.

“Good night darling Jack, changed forever by your presence.”

‘Jack came out before coming out was cool’

Musician Brendan Maclean, a longtime friend and collaborator, said he met Jack 15 years ago during a joint press interview.

“Pitted against each other as ‘the two up-and-coming gay songwriters of Sydney’, we loathed each other from the start,” Brendan told The Guardian in an obituary.

“We both came out before coming out was cool. It was, in part, the emotional toll this took on us individually that led us back together.

“I’ll never forget sitting outside venues on Grindr, trying to convince nearby homosexuals to buy tickets to our shows. It never worked!

“Where I concerned myself with sounding and looking pretty, he was unafraid to bark, belt and scream.

“Jack’s only focus was the song and communicating it with his audience, even if it left some terrified of the ferocious, writhing, howling musician on the stage.”

Brendan wrote on Instagram, “Good night Jack. Who am I supposed to fight with now? Who will match your fury?”

‘He tackled darkness and trauma head on’

Just a week ago, Jack Colwell had written on social media that a new album was “on the home stretch now and into your ears (sometime) soon”.

“Looking forward to releasing some new music soon. The mixes are nearly done and the mastering is booked in,” he wrote on September 24.

“I’ve been saying for ages that LP2 will be with you soon and that day isn’t too far off!”

Writing in The Guardian, author Jenny Valentish remembered Jack Colwell as “an astonishing talent”.

She described Jack’s performances as a “one-man séance, cresting operatic highs and frightening the horses with guttural, primal lows.”

“Visually, he was a vision board of romantic leads, from a knight in shining armour eating an ice-cream sundae, to a shirtless dreamboat swooning into a bed of flowers. On record, through his cluster of EPs and singles… he tackled darkness and trauma head-on.

“As a friend, he was generous and loyal, almost to a fault.”

Comedian Gen Fricker went to high school with Jack Colwell in Sydney, and the pair later made music together. Gen said Jack was “out and flamboyant at 14” and “so brave and so himself, always.”

“We met when we were 14 and loved each other instantly. My first best friend,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I have spent nearly two-thirds of my life loving him… I am devastated and furious.”
