Back when I was a Librarian, we lived and breathed by the Publisher's Weekly Bestseller List. It was my responsibility to print or photocopy the list every week and update our bestseller's display. (Also to purchase extra copies of particularly popular bestsellers.)
I haven't looked at the list in YEARS. Some of these surprise me:
A new translation of The Iliad made the list?!
Ken Follett is still alive?? (I looked him up, he's only 74.)
Danielle Steel is still alive?? ( I just looked her up, she's only 76 and has been married five(!) times. To be fair, I also looked up Ken Follett, he's only been married twice.)
I see some Christmas-themed books on the list!
I see a Disney manga! (“The Battle for Pumpkin King”)

Back to School Readathon 2023
youtube
Starting a few days after the fall semester starts for my university, Liv is helping to host another readathon, except that this one is not 24 hours, its almost a week long! With both reading prompts and photo prompts, each based on particularly school themed events and classes, there is about to be so much going on from August 25-August 31!
Tumblr media
youtube
Unlike the graphic novels and manga readathon, I do not plan to try to read more than the books I'm selecting for each reading prompt this time, unless I read way faster than I'm expecting! As far as the photo prompts, based on the spirit week we all know and love, we don't actually have to dress up or even have our faces in any of the photos! As mentioned in Liv's announcement video, you can simply use props to do flat lays with books, and I'll be mentioning one that I'm already planning out (and will likely take the picture super ahead of time!).
youtube
Tumblr media
Gwen has put out some awesome movie suggestions for the "study hall" prompt as well, specifying that the prompt is just that the movie needs to take place in a school, not necessarily a dark academia or anything like that (literally you can watch High School Musical even!) and if you are a patron of Gwen, she'll be hosting a live viewing of Heathers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
While there are enough prompts for a full school day, there is no particular order required or even recommended to my knowledge of how to follow each prompt. It certainly is not expected for you to knock out more than one prompt in one day unless your second prompt is the "study hall" aka movie prompt!

Here are some examples that I had to sift through of my own books to narrow down to my final selections!

I honestly love your approach to nurturing faith 💌 are there any theological books you would recommend? interested in any and all, but especially keen on any focusing on Islam, Judaism, or Christianity
🥺 that's so nice of you dear.....well as y'all know i am partial to the medieval mystics and simone weil at the moment.... currently in the middle of julian of norwich's writing and mechthild of magdeburg's book (which i recently realized i forgot to actually finish once i got the physical copy lmao). i'm also working on closet devotions by richard rambuss and some other things i currently have on my phone but haven't really started yet include mystical theology: the integrity of spirituality and theology by mark a. mcintosh, queering richard rolle by christopher m. roman, and alien sex: the body and desire in cinema and theology by gerard loughlin. on my tbr list are a couple books by belden c. lane, the universal christ by richard rohr, the roots of christian mysticism by oliver clement, hafiz, and amy-jill levine. to name a few lol. if i don't feel like putting in a lot of mental effort or want to read something chicken soupish i really enjoy reading people like sarah bessey who writes more colloquially and makes god feel like home. i would also recommend rumi but make sure you get a good translation as there are some very popular shitty ones, i have one by kabir helminski and ahmad rezwani that i think is good so far but i am not an expert. i will also mention the language of science and faith by francis collins which is more apologetics and less theology per se but was quite important to me when i was deconstructing from fundamentalism....also i have a place in my soul for a grief observed by cs lewis and the great divorce also by him, which is a book i've always enjoyed a lot and is very short and accessible. i also enjoy abraham joshua heschels writing.
not an exhaustive list by any means but perhaps you can find something in there!

The Story of “What I Like About You” 20th Anniversary
The WB television network had launched in 1995 and made a name for itself as the network for breakout teen starlets, such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Williams, and Katie Holmes.
Jordan Levin, the then president of the network, came to be acquainted with Amanda Bynes through a new deal made with Tollin/Robbins productions. The partnership had produced successes with Smallville and, on the Kids' WB, with The Nightmare Room.
In February 2001, Tollin/Robbins started production on The Nightmare Room, and for its third episode (”Don’t Forget Me”), they brought over one of their stars from another project - Amanda Bynes of All That and The Amanda Show.
The Amanda Show was one of Nick's highest rated live action shows, consistently placing in the top 50 of the cable TV Nielsen ratings. Amanda was still under contract to Nickelodeon at the time. But in December 2000 she had signed on to appear in her first motion picture - Universal’s Big Fat Liar (dir. Shawn Levy).
in the Spring of 2001, Amanda pushed to bring her Nickelodeon series to an end, and it was rumoured the 15-year-old was seeking to be emancipated from her parents in order to work longer hours without the need for a guardian to be on set.
On October 3, 2001, the WB announced that it was developing a sitcom known as “The Amanda Bynes Project”. Two names were attached - Wil Calhoun (who wrote for Friends) and Dan Schneider (creator of The Amanda Show). It was also announced the show would be on "The WB Friday", a night already known for having a good run of comedies, like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and one more successful comedy premiered in the Fall of 2001 - Reba McEntire’s "Reba".
On January 19th, the third and final season of The Amanda Show debuted on Nickelodeon. Amanda would routinely appear on the network’s Slime Time Live segments, but when she wasn’t promoting that she was talking up her starring role in Big Fat Liar, which opened in cinemas February 8th, grossing $11.7 m its opening weekend.
A core cast for “The Amanda Bynes Project” began to form in March 2002, with Wesley Jonathan of City Guys first to climb on board. Then came Simon Rex from Jack and Jill. Finally, the big sister came, and it was a big name - Jennie Garth, former Beverly Hill, 90210 kid.
On April 9th, the pilot simply filmed as "Untitled Calhoun/Schneider Project" at the Warner studios in Burbank. It would later be worked on and test screened under the title "What I Like About My Life". Jennie Garth would later mention she knew the pilot would be sold because she and the other cast members couldn't stop laughing at the script readthrough.
Whatever events were going on in Amanda’s personal life, she had remained under the care of her parents, and in the Spring of 2002 she was accompanied by her grandma in London whilst filming her first leading star role in What A Girl Wants (dir. Dennie Gordon). From there, via satellite, she talked to trades along with other cast and crew at the Television Critics' Association Summer Press Tour in Pasadena:
“I’ve done sketch comedy where I’m always transforming and becoming another person, always putting a wig on. To actually be one person and perfect that and make it into a full character will be great. I’m looking forward to it.”
On May 14th, the WB released its Fall 2002 schedule with Amanda Bynes' new sitcom, now titled What I Like About You, given the honour and responsibility of leading off Friday night at 8PM.
It would premiere September 20th, to a more than worthy 2.5m in the ratings, and run for a further four seasons.

(As a result I'm not going to bother including percentages for any of these stats, as the straight numbers will be pretty close to the percentage of total.) Of the books I read, only 7 were rereads, which is super low when compared to past years; not sure what all factors played into that. Fantasy: 51 Graphic novels: 21 Kidlit: 20 Historical fiction: 14 Nonfiction: 13 Romance: 13 YA: 13 Science Fiction: 11 Old books: 4 Short Stories: 7 Memoir: 5 Famous/Classic: 4 Translated: 3 Mystery: 3 Literary Fiction: 2 Gothic: 2 Folk/fairy tale collection: 1 Poetry: 1 Books with male authors: 20 Books with female authors: 73 Books with nonbinary authors: 12 Books with authors of colour: 52 5-star books: 16 4-star books: 38 3-star books: 42 2-star books: 6 1-star books: 0 Books continue to be an important source of good in my life. I love reading books, I love figuring out what I think about a book and how to express it clearly in my reviews, and I love talking about the books I read with other people who have opinions on them - whether in the comments of one of my book posts, in the comments of their book posts, in person, in twitter DMs, in chat....it's great. I've also been working on feeling like it's okay for me to not write/post a review of a book when I don't actually want to though, for whatever reason, and I feel like this year I was successful at not pressuring myself to! (however: if you want to talk with me about any of the books I listed without a review linked, please feel free to, talking to people is different :)) The kinds of books I read in any given year are highly influenced by what sorts of kicks I end up on. Last year I read a whole bunch of poetry, for example, because I started reading Robert Service and couldn't stop. This year my graphic novel count is the highest it's ever been because I went through the the list of all graphic novel ebooks my library had to offer. Both last year and this year I've done my best to read my way through all the Hugo nominees in all the categories I can, which introduces books into my life that I might not otherwise have thought to give a try to, and which sometimes result in exciting finds and sometimes result in me going "ugh WHY THIS." I've been making good use of my library's curbside pickup this year instead of just relying on their ebooks like I did last year, which opened up more books to my availability even in a time when covid means wandering through the library on a regular basis isn't as safe as it used to be. I started tagging all my book thoughts posts this year with my star rating of them (...at least on dreamwidth, where tags work differently), which I think is a net benefit to my overall tagging/info-conveyance system. It makes it really easy to discover, for example, how MANY of the books I read are ones that I really do like. A good sign that I'm curating my own reading well. And I read so many good books this year! I say this every year but it's really true! There are so many amazing books in the world and I put LOTS of them in front of my face. What's my favourite of them??? How to even narrow it down! She Who Became the Sun absolutely blew me away, When the Tiger Came Down the Mountain felt like it was written just for meeeeee, Elatsoe was a delight, An Anthology of Russian Folk Epics was fascinating, Beowulf: A New Translation was endless fun, Spinning Silver continues to be brilliant, The Magic Fish did a perfect job of marrying form and theme to enhance an already amazing story, My Cousin Rachel sent me basically feral for a week straight.....BOOKS!!! I successfully managed to not read any one-star books this year, go me. I think my least favourite would be either Upright Women Wanted or Come Tumbling Down, though it's possible that feeling like the Hugos made me read those ones made my feelings of dislike for them more intense than for the books I personally inflicted upon me. At any rate although both books emphatically did not work for me, they clearly have elements that speak to other readers, and honestly it's nice when my least favourite books of a given year aren't just irredeemable dreck.

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Duisburg - 1996 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Jerzy Jeszke (Jean Valjean), Hardy Rudolz (Javert), Cornelia Drese (Fantine), Deborah Dutcher (Cosette), Felix Martin (Marius), Sanni Luis (Éponine), Martin Berger (Enjolras), Tom Zahner (Thénardier), Anne Welte (Madame Thénardier), Willi Welp (The Bishop) Les Misérables - Dutch Revival - Spring, 2008 FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: René van Kooten (Jean Valjean), Wim van den Driessche (Javert), Nurlaila Karim (Fantine), Suzan Seegers (Cosette), Jamai Loman (Marius), Céline Purcell (Éponine), Freek Bartels (Enjolras), Gerben Grimmius (u/s Thénardier), Marjolein Algera (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Complete show, Amateur capture A, Double dvd Les Misérables - Fifth National Tour - October 5, 2018 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Nick Cartell (Jean Valjean), Josh Davis (Javert), Mary Kate Moore (Fantine), Jillian Butler (Cosette), Joshua Grosso (Marius), Paige Smallwood (Éponine), Matt Shingledecker (Enjolras), J Anthony Crane (Thénardier), Allison Guinn (Madame Thénardier), Sam Middleton (Gavroche), Cate Elefante (u/s Little Cosette), Matt Moisey (Grantaire), Monte J Howell (Combeferre), Tim Quartier (s/w Feuilly), Christopher Viljoen (Courfeyrac), Patrick Rooney (Jean Prouvaire), Gabriel Sidney Brown (Joly), Andrew Maughan (Lesgles), Felipe Barbosa Bombonato (Babet), John Ambrosino (Claquesous), Steve Czarnecki (Factory Foreman), Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Factory Girl), John Ambrosino (Bamatabois) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - November 11, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Victor Hawks (u/s Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Aaron Lazar (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche), Drew Sarich (Grantaire) NOTES: A nice capture here of Victor as Valjean. The capture is a little on the dark side, but still enjoyable. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - February 17, 2007 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Drew Sarich (u/s Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche) NOTES: A really nice video of the first broadway revival. Widescreen. Cleaned up nicely in remastering. And it has Sarich. It includes most of the show. Loud excited audience. Blind shot from stage right third row, with no zooms. It’s refreshing to see different faces in the lead roles, and both Nathaniel and Earl carry the show well. Nathaniel’s vocals are powerful and he has a great rapport with Caissie and Samantha. A lovely capture overall with no obstruction. Look Down is mostly blacked out and there are a couple quick dropouts during The Bishop scene and Lovely Ladies, but the show is otherwise fully intact. There is also some washout in high contrast wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. (Proof: https://youtu.be/KI_KHnLwk_k) Les Misérables - West End - May 6, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tim Godwin (u/s Jean Valjean), Cornell John (Javert), Kerry Ellis (Fantine), Julia Möller (Cosette), Hayden Tee (Marius), AJ Callaghan (u/s Éponine), Nolan Dark (u/s Enjolras), Barry James (Thénardier), Tracie Bennett (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Taper’s comments: Amanda and Nolan are better than the principles and Tim sounds uncannily like JOJ (Home Counties accent not-withstanding). He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. Heads in the way sometimes block the action on the lower right of the stage, but they are shot around well. Vantage point provides some interesting views such as of Fantine during Lovely Ladies. Wonderful performances from the entire cast but especially then soon-to-be-Elphaba Kerry Ellis.
