Companions...as companions
(or, “things that have been in my drafts since early 2020″)
Back in December, I got overwhelmed by feelings and wrote a random little concept sketch re-imagining The (Tenth) Doctor as a regular human and the companions as various pets, summarizing each one's place in his life ("Donna is a dog he reluctantly fostered for a friend, still reeling from the loss of Rose. She's bigger, older, a bit more stubborn and independent, but he finds himself fond of her anyway. Until she gets adopted, and he has to let her go (enter Martha). A year later she's back in need of a home, and this time he doesn't hesitate.”) I also got sassy about the ending, because it wasn’t THAT serious. "And then Rose comes back, dirty and footsore but HOME, and he lives his best life with his 3 best girls forever and ever, the end.”
Last night I reread it and suddenly went, "What if I cleaned up the writing and made this a real fic," and now I'm a thousand words deep and it's getting elaborate. Nine is standing in for this doctor’s father (wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey), because he had Rose first. I'm also trying to decide if I should stick with the idea of Martha being a cat because Independence (her dynamic is just so different from how R&D pledged their lifelong devotion to traveling with him, and he treated her differently too), or if making her the only non-dog Others her too much and I should just make her a super-smart and elegant breed. But on the bright side, since Ten is a goddamn neverending tragedy and the original version saw me tack on a "SAD ALTERNATE END" section just to stab myself in the face (“At the end of a series of short-lived fosters there's Wilf, sweet old elderly Wilf who looks like Donna, and is there by his side when the cancer finishes wearing him down, too young by half, at 40"), now he gets a full life and the Companion Farewell Tour becomes a shameless Titanic-style/Rainbow Bridge escort of dogs from days past. ...which ALSO makes me cry, but for better reasons.
(And there at the end of time is Rose, younger than he’s ever seen her, crossing over with him when everything goes dark and light at once.)
#sarah jane may or may not be in this story#because I may or may not have started wandering off on a companion chapter about her own collection of pups#as inspired by Sarah Jane Adventures#ANYWAY: it is my fondest dream that I will finish and post this this year if only for my own amusement#fic scraps#cleaning out my drafts#p.s. spoiler alert I am keeping Martha as a cat this time because I have added in the companions from the specials#and given that they include a literal cat burglar she is no longer the only feline#doctor who related

AS ALLUDED TO IN THIS POST: dr who canon LGBT companions tier list lol
Disclaimer: i cannot vouch for the accuracy of any of the below information as i've not read/watched/listened all the expanded universe works in question!!
Tier 1: self-explanatory these are characters in the show who are canonically LGBT (not an exhaustive list
Tier 2: characters who are LGBT according to dubiously canon bits of the TV show; Harry is mentioned to have a boyfriend in a deleted scene (unclear if being deleted makes this non-canonical) and Nyssa and Tegan are endgame according to Farewell, Sarah Jane (unclear relationship to TV canon)
Tier 3: these characters have both been made canonically bisexual by Big Finish stories which are official DW productions which may or may not be canon to the TV show
Tier 4: Mike Yates has been implied a couple of times in Doctor Who Expanded Universe books to be bisexual w a long-term male partner but this has never technically been confirmed
Tier 5: Steven Taylor had a brief flirtation with Christopher Marlowe in an expanded universe novel; i gather whether or not he reciprocates is ambiguous
Tier 6: whatever the fuck was going on with Ian in Campaign, a novel that was written for the Doctor Who EU and then rejected on the grounds of being too weird; unclear if Ian is bisexual in it OR if its being rejected makes it no longer canon
Tier 7: Liz has an ex-girlfriend in PROBE which is not technically a piece of Doctor Who media but also is not NOT a piece of Doctor Who media if that makes sense
Tier 8: to the best of my knowledge no piece of DW media has depicted Susan as LGBT but like she is tho

watched the mad woman in the attic. maybe i’m babybrained cocomelon brainrotted or something but why is this legitimately better than torchwood like?? or at least equal to it in complexity and subtext.*
but jesus christ… what a message about possessive friendship and the inability to let go — the parallels between eve mind-controlling the homeless people to do her bidding because she “just wants friends”, sam doing the same to rani (thinking she abandoned him after he stopped being her only friend, and trying to guilt-trip her into coming back) and rani doing the same to the bannerman road gang (becoming overly paranoid and gaslighting herself into believing she’s not good enough for them because they dare mention maria). THREE LAYERS of mirroring… “maria’s the new sarah jane” being salt on the wound of rani’s aspirational “sarahjaneification” … parallels with martha’s early-s3 complex of being unable to live up to rose, too …
^the ship interface is saying this about eve, but it can just as well be interpreted in a metaphorical sense: rani is a child trying to be an adult, rani is trying to become sarah jane, and it will hurt her. funny how the ghost of doctorification haunts the narrative even in his absence, it’s that powerful. The Doctor is a sort of memetic virus that is passed down from mentor to student, and although its intensity diminishes over time, it can still be fatal. gwen wants to imitate jack harkness. jack harkness wants to imitate The Doctor. rani wants to imitate sarah jane. and sarah jane wants to imitate The Doctor
^eve’s Not-Regeneration — proof of convergent evolution among time-active species? river song’s existence says “yes”. potentially, exposure to the vortex itself gives you the “golden energy emanating from your outstretched limbs” perk
also, from a lore perspective… eve’s species are fascinating aliens. a time-sensitive AND time-active people that’s not connected to the timelords in any way, we don’t see that nearly often enough! as for their backstory (being subject to a genocide as collateral damage because a race that can see the outcome of a conflict is dangerous to both warring parties), that’s definitely a main-show rather than kids-spinoff type concept. wonder what they were doing during the War, not the war on their planet, but the universe-spanning one. judging by the capabilities of their spaceships, the time technology they used is pretty advanced. eve may have been lying by omission: maybe the species that genocided them were none other than the residents of a certain planet that tries by all means to maintain a monopoly on time travel. they don’t like other species messing about with the web that they so carefully wove… ah, now THAT’S a plot seed for a short story in a faction paradox anthology if i ever saw one
Old Rani’s plot was also all incredibly 73 yards. the more i watch, the more i realise just how intertwined ruby sunday’s story so far has been with various callbacks and parallels to sja… it’s gotta mean something? something something trickster pantheon something somehow one who waits
*i almost hesitated to post this because the internet Hates people that analyse kids’ media with any degree of sincerity (im usually toeing the line anyway; the main show isn’t really Aimed At Adults either. which we sometimes forget)

Overthinking the Doctor Who Timeline
The present day on Gallifrey during the time of the Sixth Doctor is 30,491 CE (Doctor Who: FASA. Sourcebook for Field Agents). With a stated age of the Sixth Doctor is 900 years old (Revelation of the Daleks).
On that assumption, the Doctor was loomed circa 29,591 CE, and is a genetic reincarnation of the Timeless Child/the Other (Lungbarrow and The Timeless Children). The Doctor left the House of Lungbarrow to go to the Academy circa 29,599 CE (Lungbarrow and The Sound of Drums). Whilst at the Academy, the Time Lord known as Theta Sigma (the Doctor) befriended a fellow Prydonian from the House of Oakdown, Koschei (the Dark Path).
The Doctor left their primary school at the age of 45 (Shroud of Sorrow).
There were only 26 students in Theta Sigma’s class at the Academy (Lungbarrow). Ten of these students were the most gifted, called the Deca (Divided Loyalties).
During their years at the Academy, Theta Sigma and Koschei formed a pop band together, the Gallifrey Academy Hot Five. Theta Sigma played the perigosto stick and Koschei ironically was on the drums (Deadly Reunion).
The First Doctor left Gallifrey in a stolen Type 40 TARDIS at the age of 236 (The Ribos Operation) circa 29,827 CE. The First Doctor regenerated before the age of 450 years old (The Tenth Planet and The Tomb of the Cybermen).
The Second Doctor is grabbed by the Time Lord secret service (possibly Division) to carry out clandestine missions for the High Council (Beyond War Games). The Second Doctor visible ages between the trial at the end of the War Games and his appearance in the Two Doctors. (The War Games and The Two Doctors). Personally, I would view this as a 200-year time gap. Making the Second Doctor around 650 years old when he regenerates.
Personally, (I know people will disagree) but the Fugitive Doctor exists here. But her memories were erased by Division, so sadly it’s impossible to know how long she lived for. Her memories were erased and trapped inside a Chameleon Arch. Furthermore, Division sent back the Doctor back to the moment they were taken. To being their exile on Earth.
I believe the Fugitive is a Season 6b Doctor as. Firstly, she was working for the Time Lord secret service, other than her only the Second Doctor ever worked for them. Secondly, her TARDIS had a police box, the Chameleon circuit only broke at the end of the first ever episode (The Unearthly Child). Thirdly, UNIT was aware of the existence of the Fugitive Doctor, as she helped plan various the contingencies with Operation Time Fracture (Doctor Who: Time Fracture). Fourthly, her face was shown the Rogue when he analysed the different faces of the Doctor; but no other Timeless Incarnations were shown (Rogue).
To make the timeline add up, the Third Doctor probably lived for a century. With most of this time being between companions and in missing adventures. The only ages the Third Doctor gives is “several thousand years” (The Silurians and The Mind of Evil). However, it is safe to assume the Doctor is lying or may been unconscious aware as their life as the Timeless Child/the Other.
The Fourth Doctor says to Sarah Jane that he is 750 years old (Pyramids of Mars). Then when the Fourth Doctor first met Romana he claims to be 756; however, Romana corrects him saying that he’s 759 (The Ribos Operation). The Doctor has a birthday during the Key to Time story arc, as he then states to be 760 (The Power of Kroll). Furthermore, the Fourth Doctor regenerated into the Fifth at the age of 813 (Cold Fusion). This would mean the Fourth Doctor lived for at least 63 years.
The Fifth Doctor regenerated at approximately 850 years old (The Ultimate Treasure). This would mean the Doctor only lived as the Fifth incarnation for 37 years.
The Sixth Doctor regenerated at the age of 953 (Time of the Rani). This would mean the Doctor lived as the Sixth incarnation for 103 years.
The Seventh Doctor claimed to have regenerated at the age of 1010 (Set Piece). However, the Eighth Doctor believes the Seventh survived to the age of 1200. This would mean that the Seventh Doctor either lived for roughly 57 years or 247. Considering that the Seventh Doctor visibly ages, I would believe the latter.
But the Doctor starts to recount their age after becoming their Eighth incarnation (Vampire Science). But considering that the Eighth Doctor visibles ages, I would believe the Eighth incarnation lived for roughly 300 years.
The War Doctor states his age at the very end of the Time War claims to be 800 years old (Day of the Doctor). The War Doctor estimated that he fought in the Time War for roughly 400 years (Engines of War). However, we do not know how far into the Time War this story takes place. So for convenience sake I’ll add another century until the end of the Time War. This would make the War Doctor 800 years old when he tri-generates. The War Doctor tri-generates into three different Ninth Doctors (Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, and Christopher Eccleston).
The first Ninth Doctor (Rowan Atkinson) claims to be over 800 years old (Curse of Fatal Death). This shockingly lines up well with the age that the War Doctor claimed. Thus, supporting the tri-generation theory.
The second Ninth Doctor (Richard E Grant) doesn’t state his age (Scream of the Shalka). However, he is travelling with an android incarnation of the War Master (Derek Jacobi). Furthermore, it is implied that Gallifrey has been destroyed, as this Ninth Doctor is protecting a Time Lord matrix (Scream of the Shalka). The Time Lord matrix is a supercomputer containing the consciousness of every dead Time Lord (The Deadly Assassin and Dark Water/Death in Heaven).
The third Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) claims to Rose Tyler be 900 years old (Aliens of London). This means the Doctor meet Rose Tyler a literal century after the end of the Last Great Time War. This is even more hilarious that the Ninth Doctor never looked at his face for 100 years. Furthermore, the Doctor spends 28 years on Earth (from 1894 to 1922) before returning to Rose (The Other Side).
The Tenth Doctor is the shortest-lived incarnation, only existing for approximately 5 to 6 years. Regenerating at the age of 906 (The End of Time). Also, for three of years he was without his TARDIS and trying to save Martha and find the wreckage of the Infinite (The Infinite Quest).
The Eleventh Doctor claims to be roughly 1200 years old (Day of the Doctor). Shortly thereafter, the Eleventh Doctor was trapped on Trenzalore and spent the next 900 years protecting the town of Christmas (The Time of the Doctor). Regenerating at the age of 2100.
There’s two major time jumps for the Twelfth Doctor. Firstly, the Doctor spends 24 years on Darillium with River Song (The Husbands of River Song). Secondly, the Doctor has lectured at St Luke’s University for 50 years or 70 years (The Pilot). Also, the Doctor spends 100 years on the planet of Sto, after being sent back in time by a weeping Angel (A Confusion of Angels). Therefore, the Twelfth Doctor lived for roughly 200 years. This would make the Doctor 2300 years old when he regenerated (Twice Upon a Time).
There’s lots of time gaps in Thirteenth Doctor’s incarnation, allowing lots of potential for missing and solo stories. Also, she spent around 30 – 40 years in a Judoon prison. However, it’s impossible to know how long this incarnation lived for; but I would speculate around 45 to 50 years.
Initially, the Fourteenth Doctor bi-generates 15 hours after Thirteen regenerated (The Giggle). As the bi-generation allowed the Fourteenth Doctor to continue on living, as a separate incarnation of the Doctor. But sadly, the Fourteenth Doctor finally dies in Venice in 2063, trying to prevent the city from sinking. Then he possibly regenerates into the Curator (Tom Baker). Assuming this incarnation was living on the ‘slow path’ with only occasional day trips in time and space. This would mean the Fourteenth Doctor dies after 39 to 40 years.

From what I can tell, I can classify the mysteries so far into 5 main mysteries:
The Mrs Flood Mystery
The Susan Twist Mystery
The Mystery of The One Who Waits
The Mystery of Ruby Sunday’s Mother(??) Parent
The Mystery of Ruby Sunday
And here are my thoughts and theories on each of them (as well as fourth-wall breaks, and theories I do not like):
Mrs Flood:
She is Susan. I believe that ‘Susan’ Twist is a red herring, and Susan deserves her return. The fact that Ruby mentioned that she would be living in her time makes me even more sure, especially considering Ruby’s tendency to make things ‘happen’ - Strictly, Star Trek - more on that later.
She is River Song. A huge jump in likelihood, because I do believe her story is over, but you never know, and I don’t think I would be complaining about her return particularly. We don’t know Mrs Flood’s first name, which might be for a reason. Melody Pond, River Song and then xxxx Flood.
She is the One Who Waits. I’m going to probably say this about everyone but… idk what else to say. sHe’S tHe RaNi!!!11!!
Susan Twist:
She is the One Who Waits/part of the Pantheon of Gods. It just seems likely.
She is Ruby/Ruby’s mother. Seems the least likely, but in that case it would be a situation of ‘watching over’ Ruby in a way, but Susan Twist looks nothing like Ruby, so very unlikely.
She is no one/a spy. This works well for my first point regarding Ruby’s parent, but I think she might be a spy for The Trickster to keep an eye on the Doctor/Ruby. They could also be the same thing as the ‘Bad Wolf’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Vote Saxon’ - they don’t make sense until the finale, she might not make sense until the finale.
The One Who Waits:
Obviously one of the pantheon of Gods - I do believe the most powerful.
Probably Ruby’s mother, or someone related to Ruby.
We don’t know who they are yet. Some new guy. Hoping any one of these.
Ruby’s Parent:
THE TRICKSTER FROM THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES! The hood and cloak are the same, the desolate London is so similar and the theme when Maria has The Trickster’s box in her bed and when Ruby was hoisted into the air is the same - please just search on youtube, it will probably be there. Plus, The Trickster would work well with the Pantheon of Gods - the Gods of CHAOS - what The Trickster thrives on.
A powerful being from the Gods of Chaos - an evil thing, the One Who Waits.
Someone the Doctor may recognise - though I doubt it somehow.
Ruby:
The daughter of one of the Gods of Chaos - you cannot deny her powers, in terms of the snow, mentioning things and then they exist - she mentions the Butterfly Effect- it happens. She mentions Star Trek in Space Babies, and the crew are dressed in uniforms eerily similar to the Star Trek ones. She mentions Strictly - who come but Johannes and Shirley from Strictly.
A supernatural entity - like a changeling, or something like that. The DNA scan said she was human, but it was only 70% done - that might be foreshadowing something - in terms that she is not human. In The Wild Blue Yonder, The Doctor let superstition come in - maybe he also let Ruby in.
A bad guy. One of the Gods of Chaos, the One Who Waits. Getting close to The Doctor all this time… maybe this won’t even be revealed until series 15. That would be great in my opinion honestly!
The last episode - ‘The Legend of Ruby Sunday’ makes me believe that she is older than she is. It is not the story, it is the legend - the Google definition being ‘a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated. Not a word being used for a 19-year-old girl from Manchester, methinks.
Fourth-wall breaks: The Legend of Ruby Sunday seems to be based on a TV show - now we get to the ‘Doctor Who’ is a TV show in ‘Doctor Who’ - e.g. The Doctor can hear the non-diegetic music. I think this is a great idea. (I have written a fan-fiction about this 2 years ago hehe).
I DO NOT think these theories are true:
The Doctor is Ruby’s parent. Nope. Too obvious, lazy and just plain weird.
Ruby is Ruby’s parent?? Weird and impossible. Very very timey-wimey.
The Master is returning - I don’t think they are this series - keep in mind that we only last saw them 6 episodes as of now (after Boom - not counting The Tooth).
THANK YOU READING IF YOU’VE READ ALL OF THIS!!!

Lingthusiasm Episode 89: Connecting with oral culture
For tens of thousands of years, humans have transmitted long and intricate stories to each other, which we learned directly from witnessing other people telling them. Many of these collaboratively composed stories were among the earliest things written down when a culture encountered writing, such as the Iliad and the Odyssey, the Mwindo Epic, and Beowulf.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about how writing things down changes how we feel about them. We talk about a Ted Chiang short story comparing the spread of literacy to the spread of video recording, how oral cultures around the world have preserved astronomical information about the Seven Sisters constellation for over 10,000 years, and how the field of nuclear semiotics looks to the past to try and communicate with the far future. We also talk about how "oral" vs " written" culture should perhaps be referred to as "embodied" vs "recorded" culture because signed languages are very much part of this conversation, where areas of residual orality have remained in our own lives, from proverbs to gossip to guided tours, and why memes are an extreme example of literate culture rather than extreme oral culture.

50 Days of HypnoKink - Day 49: Hypno in Media
My heavens... we made it to the finish line. Tomorrow is the final day.
I wanted to save an obvious one for the end because I do so enjoy MC in fiction so very much. So much, in fact, that I made a Twitter thread with 110 recommendations and never even came close to emptying my resources.
I know so many of these scenes, both that Twitter thread and this page are skimming the surface.
I'll be using some of those recommendations here but let's divide by category:
Film
So let's get the obvious out of the way. You have
Trance
A Danny Boyle thriller with a terrible plot and Rosario Dawson as a hypnotherapist trying to get hidden information from James McAvoy's mind. Silly movie but one that doesn't get brought up a lot. Dawson learned hypnosis to get into the role.
Candyman
Horror movie in which the director literally hypnotized the actress so any time she was being stalked by the titular killer she looked completely entranced. Link above is an interview discussing this.
Hypnotic
HORRIBLE movie on Netflix but Sleepyhead and I have hosted a number of watch parties and let me tell you, this is the PERFECT movie to watch with a bunch of rowdy hypnokinksters. The therapist is unethical to a laughable degree and his office looks like it's inside of the Death Star. He's a living breathing red flag. The movie does have a really hot freeze scene, a good ragdoll and the dollification sequence. It's just enjoyable because it's terrible. Check CWs first though, this movie has a bunch of things that can make it an uncomfortable viewing experience.
The Great Hypnotist
This is a Not For Daja movie. A Chinese movie that doesn't get brought up a lot. Like Trance above it is a thriller with some twists and turns that I don't really want to spoil.
Stir of Echoes
A visualization of a dissociation induction designed to make a person view events on a screen so they are separate from the memory. It's a remarkably well done scene.
Now You See Me 1/2
The hypnosis in these movies is STUPID and I love it. The first movie has a punchline that every time Mark Rufallo's character makes a frustrated comment people who Woody Harrelson has hypnotized will start acting as if they're in an orchestra. Second movie has a twin Woody Harrelson as an evil hypnotist and he uses a pizza box as an evil induction. It's amazing.
Sherlock Holmes Woman in Green
This induction is one of the coolest I've seen in a film and I try my hardest to channel the energy of this when I am doing a relaxation focused scene.
TV
Charlies Angels
This is bar none my favorite hypnosis scene in any fiction. The typewriter induction is amazing, the hypnotist has such a smooth voice, the entranced gazes are lovely. It's just perfect. Heck, the link above is "hypnosis scenes" from the episode and is 26 minutes long. From a single episode of television.
Doctor Who
Sarah Jane gets hypnotized so often that I could make a list purely from her.
Legion
youtube
I just wanna link this one as it's one of those scenes that works so much better without context and the aesthetics are incredible. Plus who doesn't like Aubrey Plaza?
Quick Bonus Animation Round
Carmen Sandiego (Neflix) has a ton of mind control including the bad end to the interactive movie.
Totally Spies is a meme for a reason
And this one is a reason many of us are here <3
Comics
DC vs Vampires
I think the page speaks for itself. "Hypnosis isn't lying, Diana. It's speaking to your vulnerability."
Korra
This sequence of Asami, brainwashed to hate the avatar, being deprogrammed is so good that someone on AO3 did an incredible fan-fiction which may well be one of my favorite hypnokink stories of all time.
Super Mario Comic
I bring this one up as it was one of my earliest moments of "...oh... this is kind of making me feel some kind of way."
Video Games
A note that a full directory of video games featuring Mind Control can be found at mindcontrol.fun the MC Games Wiki, run by @soveryverytired
Nyx Gaming (Featured game: Enthralled)
Nyx do incredible games which are designed to hypnotize the viewer and their consent practices are wonderful. They recently teamed up with Secret Subject to release a vampire enthrallment game and let me tell you, there is not a single word in that synopsis that doesn't make me happy.
Mind Melting Massaging Machine
The best tool for VR hypnosis. Upload custom files and program spirals, subliminals and chose between static spiral or headtracking. I have had so much fun with this over the years. There's a desktop version too but VR is optimal for this experience.
Spiral Clicker
It's such a simple concept. Click on the character and watch their will go away. Spiral Clicker is backed with a fun little universe, fun characters both original and community sourced, amazing art and a clever little gameplay loop that is quite addictive. Careful, the game features a constant spiral, you may find yourself falling in to trance. Don't worry. The game will wake you up. You can even ask the game to include suggestions for you :)
The sequel is being worked upon now and I cannot wait <3
Music Videos
Anna Soares - Hypnodoll (NSFW)
youtube
Straight up just a song and music video about hypnokink. If you click anything in this thread, click this one.
Little Big - Hypnodancer:
youtube
Silly antics but a fun music video.
Pharrell Williams - Hypnotize U
youtube
It's just Pharrell hanging out in a mansion with his hypnotized harem.
Grimes - We Appreciate Power
youtube
It's dronekink baby.
Andamiro - Hypnotize
youtube
Maid hypnotizes their employer.
I could do so many more in all areas. But the point is, media is hypnohorny. I never went over advertisements (UK ones especially), books, musicals (Phantom and Next To Normal for instance), anime (Sailor Moon) or manga.
But I write about a bunch more in my Twitter thread.

when people say sja is great, this is the episode they are talking about, and for good reason, it is hands down the best episode, and all the other ones people call good only really feel possible because of this, and in some cases are just following in this episodes footsteps. If you only watch one episode, make it this one, if you’ve tried sja and decided its not for you but not seen this one, come back just for this. I mean maybe it’s the 8 year old in me talking, but I highly doubt it, its just that good (anonymous)

"Mr Rochester" by Sarah Shoemaker
3/5 ***
As someone who has read Jane Eyre every December since I was fourteen years old, I had a deep curiosity about this book. Jane Eyre was an incredibly important book to me in my formative years, so it would be easy for me to be snobbish about any kind of re-writes, as I know many people can be about such things. This said, I have also been a connoisseur of fine fanfiction for many years as well, so I'm of the mindset that it's always fun and interesting to see the spin other folks put on my favourite stories and characters, and I was very intrigued by this!
I will be honest and say it wasn't what I expected - from the cover having Jane front and centre, to the description and blurb, as well as other reviews, I was led to believe this was a re-telling of Jane Eyre from the perspective of Mr Rochester. If that's the story you're looking for, this isn't it. We don't even meet Jane until the last third of the book, and I can understand why some readers have felt misled by the way the book has been marketed, because when I realised the pace of the story and how things were likely to unfold, I felt that same disappointment.
Despite this, it is a really good book, and I would encourage people to stick with it. It's not a re-telling of Jane Eyre, as such, but rather it's the story of Edward Rochester's life, through his childhood, adolescence, his first marriage, various travels and love affairs, and then meeting and falling in love with Jane. It was very much a love letter to Mr Rochester, I felt, giving him a quite tragic backstory, and shining a light on what the author felt might have pardoned his poor behaviour in the original novel.
There were a lot of parallels between Jane and Rochester in their childhood, starting life lonely and mistreated by the family that should have cared for them, then being shipped off to school where they met (and subsequently lost) those childhood friends that made life more bearable. From there the similarities of their journeys end, as Rochester of course must become wounded by life so that he can turn into the dark, brooding, Byronic hero we know and love.
A lot of thought is given to his motivations, to things that might have influenced his choices later down the line. It's a wonderful character study, written with a great deal of care and respect for Rochester, which I appreciated. Some of it was a bit far-fetched, especially towards the end where Jane is involved and the marriage is coming up, but I didn't mind that so much because it was such an interesting read.
As I say, I think if you go into the book expecting a certain sort of story, you may be disappointed, but if you read it with an open mind, it's worth the read.

Mary Jane Kelly was brutally murdered on 9 November 1888 and although it has been debated about, she is generally believed to be the final victim of Jack the Ripper who killed five prostitutes around Whitechapel in the later months of that year. The other victims were killed on the street, where Mary was murdered in her own room at 13 Miller’s Court. Just after 10.45am on 9 November, the mutilated body of Mary Jane Kelly was found by Thomas Bowyer, a retired soldier collecting rent for the landlord John McCarthy. The inquest testimonies of Elizabeth Prater and Sarah Lewis, in which they spoke of having been woken by a cry of "murder" at around 4am, coupled with the medical evidence, led to a consensus that the time of Mary Jane Kelly's murder had been around 4am.
Did they see Mary Kelly after her murder?
However, doubt was cast on this by the appearance of Caroline Maxwell who swore that she had met Mary Jane Kelly between 8am and 8.30am, when Kelly informed her that she was the worse for drink and had recently vomited on the street. After this conversation Maxwell left for an errand in Bishopsgate. As she was returning home she claimed to have again encountered Kelly, some time between 8:45 and 9:00 though this time the two women did not speak. Instead, Maxwell claimed that Kelly was standing outside of a public house, The Britannia, and conversing with a man who appeared to be a porter but who she claimed she would be unable to point out again. She was able to describe Kelly's clothing, which she described as a dark dress, a velvet body and a maroon shawl.
When Mrs. Maxwell appeared at the inquest to give her testimony, the Coroner actually cautioned her to be careful about the evidence she was about to give as it differed from other statements. Mrs Maxwell, however, was adamant about what she had seen and stuck to her story.
It has been suggested that Maxwell may have confused her dates or perhaps spoken to some other woman and not Kelly. This has raised several theories over the years. The first is that the woman with whom Maxwell spoke was the so-called "Jill the Ripper", a female killer who has been suggested by some to be the real culprit. It has also been suggested that the killer himself simply disguised himself in Kelly's clothes in order to escape the scene of the crime. The somehow more fanciful version suggests that it was some other woman, for instance one of the two who were noted to have shared the room in the days leading up to the murder, and not Kelly who was murdered on November 9th. Others have suggested that the doctors may have incorrectly determined the time of death. Her testimony was discounted by contemporary police and remains hotly debated.
Maurice Lewis, a tailor, reported seeing Mary Jane Kelly at about 10:00 that same morning in a pub, drinking with some other people. He went home to Dorset Street on leaving the house, and, about half-an-hour afterwards, he heard that Kelly had been found in her room murdered. Police questioned him, then disregarded his witness testimony.
