In light of Sarah Friedland articulating the history of occupation and genocide in Palestine and expressing support for the resistance, it's especially shameful that big names in Hollywood (like Jolie or Ruffalo or Amal Clooney) are so mealy-mouthed and weak in their statements.

“Lyd”: Palestinian & Jewish Directors of New Sci-Fi Doc on How 1948 Nakba Devastated Palestinian City
youtube
A new film about the once-thriving Palestinian city of Lyd, now known as the Israeli city Lod and home to Ben Gurion Airport, has begun screening in the United States. The film is a “science fiction documentary” that depicts the Palestinian city both with and without the 1948 Nakba, when over 750,000 Palestinians were driven from their homes and villages. In Lyd, Israeli soldiers massacred hundreds of Palestinians in Dahmash Mosque during their takeover of the city. “We use the story of Lyd to symbolize the story of the Nakba, the Palestinian Nakba, the demolition and expulsion of over 600 villages all across Palestine,” explains Rami Younis, a descendant of Nakba survivors from Lyd. Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland, the co-directors of Lyd, join Democracy Now! to share excerpts from their film and discuss the vision behind their project.

YOU has been renewed for a fifth - and FINAL - season by Netflix.
Quotes on the renewal below:
Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter: “We are so incredibly grateful to Netflix and Sera and everyone that has been a part of this show from the beginning. Sera is the most brilliant writer and partner and she will remain a key part of the YOU family as an executive producer.  We intend to bring her every idea we can from our company for years to come. Ever since our friends at Alloy shared Caroline Kepnes’ fantastic book we have always conceived it as a five season journey. We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike and Justin as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home.”
Peter Friedlander, Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix, US and Canada: “YOU became an instant sensation on Netflix with a resounding cultural impact that has grown season over season. We’re excited — and a bit terrified — to see how it all ends for Joe Goldberg, but one thing is for sure: YOU are in for an unforgettable ending.”
Sera Gamble: "As I step back from day-to-day showrunning to focus on new projects, I'm immensely grateful to co-creator and all-around genius Greg Berlanti, Caroline Kepnes, my friends at Berlanti Productions and Alloy Entertainment, and our steadfast partners at Warner Bros and Netflix. Making the show alongside our writers, producers, directors, cast and crew has been an honor and ridiculously fun. And I feel lucky to have worked with an artist as gifted and thoughtful as Penn Badgely. I'm proud of what we've all accomplished and feel privileged to pass the torch. I'm excited to watch and support the You team as they bring Joe Goldberg's journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion."
Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo: "Working with Greg and Sera on YOU has been a highlight of our careers and we're incredibly honored to be entrusted with the final chapter of Joe Goldberg's story."

[ID: a quote tweet by Sarah Friedland (@motionxpictures) that says “We spent 4+ hours waiting cuffed in the bus blocking grand army traffic because none of the dozens of cops knew how to drive it! Solidarity w/ the bus drivers! ✊🏻 [white raised fist emoji].” The quoted tweet is by Jewish Voice for Peace NYC (@jvpliveNY) that says, “Bus drivers refused to transport protestors from last night's Seder in the Streets to the precinct, forcing cops to drive the busses. Power and solidarity to the union bus drivers with @twu100 who refuse to collaborate with the NYPD, which commandeers MTA busses for mass arrests.” It has a picture of someone wearing a keffiyeh, a “Jews say ceasefire now” shirt, and handcuffs from the back with a cop on their left and a bus on their right.]
Hundreds of Jewish anti-war demonstrators have been arrested during a Passover seder that doubled as a protest in New York, as they shut down a major thoroughfare to pray for a ceasefire and urge the Senate majority leader, Chuck Schumer, to end US military aid to Israel.
The 300 or so arrests took place on Tuesday night at Grand Army Plaza, on the doorstep of Schumer’s Brooklyn residence, where thousands of mostly Jewish New Yorkers gathered for the seder, a ritual that marked the second night of the holiday celebrated as a festival of freedom by Jews worldwide.
The seder came just before the US Senate resoundingly passed a military package that includes $26bn for Israel.

By Dikla Taylor-Sheinman October 25, 2024
Two hours before I was due to attend the debut screening in Israel of Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland’s film “Lyd” earlier this month, I received a message from the organizers informing me that it was canceled. Police, under instruction from Culture Minister Miki Zohar, had forced Jaffa’s Palestinian-run Al-Saraya Theater to call off the event. Their pretext was a century-old British Mandate ordinance obliging theaters to obtain prior approval for every film they screen — but for Zohar, it seemed there was another factor at play.
“The film presents a delusional, lying picture in which IDF soldiers allegedly committed a brutal massacre,” the minister said before its cancellation. His statement followed pressure from the right-wing group B’tsalmo, which had already planned to protest the screening at Al-Saraya, smearing Younis as an “inciter” and warning that the film “could cause terror attacks by Israeli Arabs.”
Narrated in Arabic with English subtitles, “Lyd” premiered at the Amman International Film Festival in August 2023, where it won the Jury Award for Arab Feature Documentary Film and the International Film Critics’ Award. In attendance at that first screening were hundreds of refugees from the city of Lyd, or Lydda, which is now known officially as Lod.
