Best at Petting- Sanha
Rating: Fluff
Warning⚠️: None
Pairing: Yoon Sanha x Reader (platonic)
Word count: 5K
Tumblr media
Plot/prompt: (Credit to r/writing prompts)
You accepted your trophy for “Best at Petting” in good humour, but the next morning you receive an urgent summoning from the King of the Werewolves.
A/N: I kind of went off and I’m not sure about the end. I may take a few paragraphs away, Im not sure at this stage :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The trophy sat high up on your bookcase in the living room, high enough to catch the morning sunlight. It glimmered in the first rays to pour through the porch door, flashing the rays in your direction. You sighed heavily as you entered the room, switching the tv on so that the house wasn’t so very quiet. Squinting against the sun rays, you headed for the kitchen, turning on the kettle.
The news anchor on the tv was speaking to the camera as always, the papers with what he needed to talk about being shuffled about as he moved a hand about to accentuate his point. The story didn’t interest you, but this news show was your best friend until all of the other channels had finished their endless rounds of advertisements and gossipy talk shows. The story changed and the small box which usually held what could be referred to as a thumbnail held a photo of a young woman standing before a crowd of people.
The image seemed familiar to you but you couldn’t put your finger on it. Oh, that’s right. The awards ceremony in which you were given the trophy sitting in the woman’s hands on the tv. It was also in your living room. You glared up at the shiny trinket, shaking your head at the writing you knew was engraved on it in cursive letters.
Best at Patting
Okay, sure. You had loved stopping to pet animals since a child, but seriously? A trophy for it? And it was given to you in front of a whole crowd of people, no less? Could you have been more embarrassed? Just as you thought that, a knock on your door disturbed you. Opening it, a young girl stood in front of you. ‘Hello, I’m Hyuna. I have been sent to retrieve you. You are Y/N, right? The young lady who got the “Best at patting” award?’ She burst out as soon as you came face to face with her.
'Uh, depends on who’s asking.’ You responded, sceptically studying the other woman. “Hyuna” took a breath, calming herself. 'I don’t mean to startle you.’ You raise an eyebrow. 'I was sent by Yoon Sanha.’ She adds, her eyes telling you that you should know who this “Yoon Sanha” was.
'I’m sorry? I don’t know a Yoon Sanha. I think you have the wrong person. Have a great day.’ You back away from the door and begin to close your door when Hyuna speaks again. 'Here.’ She hands you her phone, a man surrounded by countless other people on the screen. He stands tall above the others, looking off into the distance. 'That’s Sanha.’
You took another look at the man, making a face and murmuring an “okay”. You gave her phone back to her and smiling. 'And why does this person want you to come get me?’
'Because you won that award.’
'The..award? Does he want it? Because he can have it.’ You grimace at the shiny trinket. Hyuna shakes her head vigorously. 'No, he wants you.’
'Hyuna, I don’t understand. Why does he want me? It’s an award for petting. As in petting animals.’ You sigh, getting a little frustrated that you couldn’t understand what the woman was trying to tell you..or rather, what she wasn’t telling you.
'Come with me, and you will see. Please, trust me. I don’t want to hurt you and neither does Sanha.’ You scoff lightly. 'And how do you know that he doesn’t want to hurt me?’ Hyuna takes another deep breath.
'He’s my brother.’
You didn’t entirely believe Hyuna, but you finally nodded, holding a finger up. 'As you wish. Just give me a few minutes to change,’ you realised you were still in your sleeping clothes and your hair was a complete mess. 'And I’ll be right with you. Come in for the time being.’ You left the door open, returning to your bedroom to change your aforementioned clothes and brush your hair.
Hyuna was curiously watching the tv when you came back out, looking much better than 10 minutes earlier. She looks over her shoulder suddenly, eyes bright. 'You’re back, Miss Y/N. Let’s go; Sanha will be wondering where I am.’ You switched the tv off and grabbed your keys, locking the door behind you. You followed the woman closely as she walked into the local oval, leading the way toward the national park which passed behind the trimmed, grassy field. You paused as she lead you into the forested area a little, survival instinct going absolutely mental.
Hyuna stopped, looking back at you again. 'Come on, I promise nothing will happen. It’s just a shortcut to where Sanha is waiting.’ She smiles to assure you, the shadows of the trees dancing across her face. It looked like her eyes had changed colour, but as you stepped closer, you noticed they were still the dark brown they were before. You take another step, then another, then another, glancing around.
The forest seemed much thicker than usual and you quickly begin choosing your own path, sighing a soft sigh of comfort as a hiking trail appears between the trees. Soft voices carry through the almost silent woods and Hyuna walked toward them. Moments of walking past countless trees that looked the same and seeing small lizards startle at your presence, Hyuna slowed down, calling to a group of taller males, each of them glancing over in confusion.
'Where’s Sanha? I’ve brought the girl.’
'Uh, he’s-’ One guy began only to be cut off my another.
'In the cave. He was sulking, I think.’ Hyuna sighs, tilting her head. 'Why?’ She snaps.
'Because you took too long.’ The first retaliates. Hyuna rolls her eyes and tugs you along with her as she walks along the trail, glaring at the boys who only jeered quietly, smirking at your backs.
'Ignore them. They’re idiots.’ She sighs, letting your wrist go. She runs over to a large cave, tucked into the side of a slope. 'Oi, Sanha~ I’ve brought the girl.’ She uses her fist to bang on the outside of the den.
A large male pokes his head out, a sour look on his face. His brown eyes moved from the girl to you and you flinched away from his glare. Hyuna turns around and smiles. 'This is Y/N, Sanha. Y/N, this is Sanha.’
The man walked out, dropping onto one knee and tucking his head down, a large smile on his mouth which seemed to go on forever. The shiny teeth glimmered in the soft, broken sunlight. Then the mouth opened.
A soft noise filled the space where words would usually be, once sharp eyes now soft, as though he was smiling at you. Pulling your eyes away from the boy before you, you look at Hyuna. 'You want me to pet him?’ Hyuna shook her head.
'No, when he’s in wolf form.’
'When is that?’ You asked curiously, glancing back at the boy, still in his respectful pose.
'Tonight is the full moon. He will be changing as soon as the full moon gets close to being at the peak.’
You sighed, looking upward. 'It’s the morning. Why was I sent for now?’ Hyuna sighs with a shrug. 'I don’t know. Sanha wanted to meet you, I suppose.’ She looked down at her brother, unmoving.
'Sanha, are you going to stand up or are you going to stay down there until you start changing?’
'You know what I’m waiting for.’ He muttered, his voice soft as his eyelids fluttered closed for a moment. Hyuna nudged you and mouthed something to you. Shaking your head to signify you hadn’t caught what she had mouthed, you frowned. Leaning in, Hyuna whispered.
'Tell him he can stand up.’
'Isn’t he the Alpha of the werewolves?’ You whisper back, confused. Why was a person with so much power over a group of people acting as though the roles were reversed. 'Mhm.’ You sighed at the short answer, glancing down at the man for the third time in the last 5 minutes.
'You .. Can stand up now.’ Finding your voice finally, a hand on his upper arm tugged him to stand up. Following your gentle tugs, he stood to his full height once again, head still bowed in respect. 'Thank you for coming, Miss Y/L/N. I apologise for the lack of notice, but ..’
'He’s nervous about the change.’
'Hyuna!’
'You are. It’s nerve-racking for you and you like being pet. Miss Y/N was the best candidate for you seeing as she got the “Best at Petting” Trophy.’
You could only stand in silence, watching. What was the change? And what was Hyuna talking about “Nerve-racking”? You were snapped out of your thoughts by Sanha talking to you again.
'If you like, I can have Hyuna take you to the oval and then come and get you again at dusk. I’m sure you have things you’d like to do while the day is young.’
You nodded, looking at Hyuna. She only smiled, gesturing for you to follow, jogging down the hiking track away from the cave. You parted ways with Hyuna after a few moments, walking over the grassy oval, watching some young kids play some sort of soccer-like game, girls and boys laughing and screaming. You smiled as you passed them, heading over to a nearby breakfast place to begin your day.
You didn’t notice how the day ticked away, the sun sinking lower in the sky until it turned the soft, billowy clouds in the sky a beautiful orange colour. You only noticed how late it had gotten when a weirdly familiar scent hit your nose- the scent of the forest. But it was muskier than usual. Turning, you came face to face with Sanha. His hair was messy and his face was tight, brown eyes conveying a feeling similar to fear.
'Your- I- Sanha-’ you stuttered, unsure of what to call him. 'Do you mind if I accompany you back to where we met?’ He spoke, either ignoring your stuttering or not noticing. 'Hyuna is a bit busy.’ He finished, but there was something different in his tone.
'Uh, sure. I have to drop in at home first though, so you can go ahead and wait at the oval. I shouldn’t be more than a quarter of an hour.’ Sanha shook his head defiantly. 'No, I’ll come with.’ A shrug answered him as you turned away, heading toward your apartment. Assuming he would wait outside the complex, you were slightly surprised to see his tall frame right behind you. But either way, you had to drop stuff off so you just made your way to your apartment, unlocking the door.
Mere moments later, you were following Sanha, having a staring contest with his shirt-clad back. He led the way confidently over the quickly darkening oval but you hesitated at the border of the forest, the darkness making it hard for you to see what was awaiting you in the trees and where you would be stepping. Sanha, however, vanished into the almost pitch black treeline which only heightened your nerves. Now, not only were you faced with a forested area which you couldn’t really see, but your guide had moved out of your sight.
You couldn’t have felt less safe than you did just then. This was where the werewolves lived- you thought- and it was the full moon. Who knew what would happen to a mere mortal such as yourself. I mean, what if they tried to eat you? What would happen to you during the full moon? Should you just make a break for it and go home? At least then you’ll feel safe. 'Y/N?’ Sanha reappeared, head tilted like a puppy.
'Huh?’
'Are you alright? Why did you stop following me?’
'I- Uh-’
'Here.’ He extended his arm in your direction. 'Hold my arm. You won’t trip, I promise.’ When you didn’t respond, he stepped forward, lightly gripping your arm in his hand, warm moving from his palm to your arm within a second. He gently wrapped your arm around his, your hand resting on his bicep. As if on instinct, your other hand held his forearm, his free hand patting your hand comfortingly. 'Not too long before we’ll be there.’
With that, he began walking, slowly making his way through the trees, pausing when your hands tightened on his arm, eyes moving down to check on you. Seeing you were fine everytime, he lifted his head again, analysing paths he could take so that you wouldn’t trip, as he had promised. It took a bit longer, but anything would go if it meant that his transition would be a bit more bearable for him this time around.
Several werewolves were gathered near the cave, chatting amongst each other. Suddenly, they looked over and you jumped back, wretching your hand out of Sanha’s grip, causing him to let a noise slip, looking back at you with concern. The other werewolves began to murmur and you began to regret everything. Agreeing to this; it seemed like a terrible idea on all levels. But you had. And the leader was currently starting at you in utter confusion, nervous he had done something wrong.
He eventually found his voice and stepped toward you. 'What’s wrong?’ You shook your head, staring over his shoulder and taking a step back. 'Nothing.’ Sanha frowned. 'There’s clearly something wrong, Y/N. What’s wrong? Maybe I can help.’
It was then he realised you were staring over his shoulder at his pack. Following your gaze, he tilted his head. 'Are you scared of the others?’ He asked quietly. 'They won’t hurt you, they’re just curious is all.’ Sanha’s tone was comforting, but none of the words made you feel even a smidgen better. He took a step toward you again, slowly extending his hand, as though he was introducing himself to an uneasy dog for the first time. 'You’ll be with me the entire time, they won’t have the chance to hurt you. I give you my word.’ He tried again.
You hesitated, studying his face, faint in the still falling darkness. It was difficult to stay where you were; you wanted to take his hand again, so you did. The warmth calmed you weirdly and he slowly made his way toward the cave again, his eyes flicking up at the sky every few moments, between his short checks on you. The pack separated, some wolves glaring at you. Why? You could only assume. Sanha turned to face the group of creatures, silently looking over them before speaking loud and clear. You glared at the ground, kicking at the dirt and tuning the man’s words out. Unfortunately, it only made the other’s whispers more prominent.
“ Is she the Alpha’s choice?”
“She’s not a werewolf. I thought Alpha would choose one of us.”
“Mm, I thought so too. Keep the blood pure.”
“She’s quite pretty .. For a human.”
'Come, let’s go get ready. The moon is rising and it won’t be long before the change will start.’ Hyuna murmured to you, walking into the cave. You worked your hand free from Sanha’s and followed, glad to be away from the other’s stares. Settling your back against the wall, you found yourself looking around for a moment. The scent you had smelt earlier covered every corner of the cave. You then sighed, blinking a few times quickly, your body starting to get tired. Sanha entered then and you could hear the soft noises of the other Werewolves doing .. something.
Hyuna began to move around quickly, her quick speaking and movements a great contrast to her brother’s slow and lethargic ones. Siting down on a small mattress on the floor, the boy rested his forearms on his bent knees, your presence unacknowledged by either of the siblings. 'Y/N?’ His voice was deep and raspy. 'Huh?’ You answered with your mouth hanging open in surprise. It seemed like it was a common theme for you to answer in this way today.
'Come here. Please.’ He mumbled, barely making an effort to pat the mattress beside him. You made a soft “Oh” sound, pushing off the wall and dropping to your knees once you were close enough to him. 'Once it starts, everything goes into overdrive.’ Hyuna spoke up, still racing around the burrow.
'Overdrive how?’
'It’s.. Quite painful. You’ll hear some yelps come out of him that will seriously make you question taking him to get help. He’s fine, just stay beside him.’ She turned to her brother. 'And you be careful if you want to put your hand on her leg or something. You know how strong you can get and she is only a human. If this works, you won’t want to hurt her so that she’ll want to help you again.’ She pointed a finger at him; Sanha nodding languidly at her words.
Hyuna peeked outside, nodding to herself. 'It’s almost time, Ddana. Are you ready?’ She questioned. The alpha shook his head. 'I guess.’ He looked up for the first time since he’d come in. There was pure fear in his eyes and his body was tensed. He knew what was coming and he was scared of it.
You answered his gaze with an innocently concerned stare. His eyes sharpened suddenly and he fought to keep his eyes on you. 'I’m sorry for this.’ He whimpered, feeling the pain start. It was worse this time and he could feel the discomfort pulsing through him already. His breath hitched as it got worse, clenching his jaw tightly to avoid making any noises. That didn’t last long, as he was a whimpering mess within a minute. Soft pleas for the pain to subside passed his lips as the pain got worse and worse as the seconds passed.
You couldn’t help but furrow your brow and raise your hand to his arm, running your fingers over his flexing arm. He’s a dog. You told yourself. He’s a puppy dog. Pet him like a puppy. Eyes closed, you chanted the same thing over again, his whimpers turning to a pain filled scream for a moment. Then they calm back down to a loud wail. Then to a softer sob. You didn’t open your eyes until his noises were soft whines, giving your eyes a moment to adjust to the lighting difference.
The bed was indented slightly where the apexes of his sharp claws met the material of the mattress. It would have been weird that he was on all fours, but he wasn’t human. His skin was all furry and warm and a tail had grown from his butt. His ears stuck straight up into the air like soft, furry antenna and his face was one of a canine. He had changed to a wolf. His soft, beige colour and from what you could see, eyes a soft blue. Sitting down, he calmed his breaths. You continued stroking him, running your hand down his well-built body.
Once his eyes had opened fully, he looked over, his mouth opening slightly to reveal sharp, shiny teeth. They were large enough to make you nervous, your worries returning from before. Before you could say anything, he licked your cheek just as a dog would, and you took it as a thank you. Hyuna appeared, also in a wolf form. Her fur was a black with light brown mixed in there, yellow eyes finishing the look. She too sat down, giving your cheek a brief lick.
You only smiled, petting both dogs gently, a fond smile toying with your lips. You hadn’t heard Hyuna; had she been screaming too but you were too focused on Sanha? Was she used to the transition and it passed quickly for her?
And Sanha. How had the transition been for him? You knew he was in a great deal of pain, and judging by the quivers that ran through his sleek body every now and then, he was still recovering. But he looked happy. And you were glad. Even if it was that you just had a canine to pet.
The howls reached your ears and you winced, the piercing calls hurting your ears a little. Hyuna answered with her own howl, Sanha standing up, looking regally at the exit. Hyuna trotted out and Sanha began to follow, hesitating to look back at you, trying to speak to you through his eyes.
Please stay here. It’s not safe outside.
He hoped you got the message, sending you a long look then leaving the burrow. You didn’t really know what his stare was about but you didn’t want to leave the cave, feeling safe in the softly lit area. Tiredness taking over your body, you laid down where Sanha had been, your body cheering internally at your obedience.
You quickly fell asleep, blissfully unaware of the hunt currently happening. You didn’t know about the seemingly soft and comforting Sanha tearing the flesh off a hare mercilessly, his wolf happy to have meat. He looks around at his pack, all feeding on their hunts, at peace with their furry forms.
He sighed in relief as he usually did after a good hunt, leading the wolves back to the cave, standing on his podium and letting out a final, Almighty howl. His pack answered just as forcefully, faces facing the large, grey-coloured moon, smiling down on them. Once the last howl had quieted down to nothing, the werewolves scattered, some leaving with their partners, others playfully batting at each other. Some laid down to rest and others left again to hunt.
Sanha walked into the cave, stopping suddenly at the sight of you sleeping peacefully. If he were in human form, he would have bitten his lip. Since he was in wolf form, he lowered his head to nibble at his front leg. Hyuna appeared beside him, watching you for a moment. She then looked at Sanha. His light fur was tinged with blood, and his claws had dirt covering them, minuscule, dirty chunks pierced by the sharp points of his nails. All evidence of the hunt.
Having seen your reaction to seeing the other werewolves simply glancing at you, he didn’t want you to see him like this. You stirred in your sleep and Sanha flinched, turning and leaving the cave, breaking into a relaxed run as soon as he was on flat ground. He headed to the river, lowering himself into the water and using his paws to splash and wash his face and body, trying to rid himself of the evidence. Once he felt he was clean enough, he left the water, rolling around in some soft dirt he found to dry his coat.
Hyuna had stayed but had moved outside, laying at the entrance like a guard dog. The blood didn’t show up as noticeably on her dark fur as it did on Sanha so she didn’t worry, planning on cleaning herself once Sanha had returned from wherever it was that he had gone in such a hurry. She stood when her brother came into sight, watching him walk past and over to where you lay, sniffing your face. She left once he nodded at her, letting her wolf take control.
You stirred again when a cold nose touched your cheek, rolling over to face it. Even though you weren’t awake, you giggled at the nose touching you again, falling silent afterward. The fur-covered creature lowered itself down beside you, curling up and letting out a soft sigh. Sanha hadn’t had such an easy time with his transition since … Well, he hadn’t had an easy time at any point and he thanked the stars above that people had decided to make such an award as “Best at Petting”.
He hoped that when you woke up, you wouldn’t mind that he had snuggled up right beside you, watching you sleep as if he was ready to protect you from anything that wanted to hurt you in your sleep or in life. Because that’s what he wanted; to give back to you. If every transition was like the one he had had that night, he was willing to protect you; to welcome you into his pack, even if you were mortal; to stay by your side like a loyal pet and best friend.
It wouldn’t be easy; to get the pack to accept you but he knew he could convince them that you meant well and, he supposed, that you could help others as well. But then again, they usually all began the transition at the same time, and if you were helping him, you couldn’t help another werewolf at the same time. But you could help in other ways. Your petting and comforting presence may help a nervous mother going into labour, or an unsure pup get used to acting as human as possible while in human form.
“That would be nice” was his last thought as he gave in to his own sudden tiredness.
Hyuna watched from the shadows, having come back to check on you both. She smiled internally at the sight, glad that her brother now had someone he could rely on to help him during the full moon.
Perhaps she thought. Just perhaps, you may be the alpha’s choice. It was unorthodox, sure, but who cared?
A few of the elders peeked in as well, murmuring about how relaxed and happy their beloved alpha had been that night. They had always worried about him being young and having to lead the pack, but with you, they were sure he would have an easier time and they were glad. Already they could tell that you were a thing that Sanha would want to have around for a long time to come.
You woke at daybreak, blearily looking around the unfamiliar room. Soft breathing caught your attention and you found a large, dusty wolf beside you. His eyes were closed and his ears twitched alertly. As softly as possible, you stood and walked toward the exit, stretching your arms up. You felt like you were in Katy Perry’s Roar MV. Wolves were scattered here and there, sleeping or just resting. Some had blood in their fur, others were clean. Some had scratches on their bodies, others looked completely unscathed.
A dark wolf materialised from the woods, fur wet. You assumed it had just gone swimming. The wolf’s eyes found you and it trotted over happily, sitting at your feet. It was then you remembered the events of last night; Helping the alpha of the werewolves with his transition, petting Hyuna and Sanha himself. This was Hyuna, if you recalled correctly. And Sanha had been sleeping beside you. You pet her head and gestured toward the wood, trying to tell her that you were going home.
She shook her head, lightly holding your shirt between her teeth and bracing her paws against the dust. She wasn’t about to let you leave before Sanha woke up. 'Ah, is the change back painful as well?’ You murmured so as to not wake anyone up.
Hyuna shook her head again.
'Then what? I’ll be back on the next full moon to help again. I’m glad i could help.’
Hyuna growled softly, tugging back on your shirt. You couldn’t leave before Sanha saw you. Either way, Hyuna knew he would pursue you, but he would appreciate it if you were still here when he woke. 'Fine. I’ll stay a little more.’ You sighed, turning to go back into the cave, laying beside the still sleeping wolf that was Sanha. Before you knew it, his warmth was lulling you back into a state of slumber.
Sanha woke a fair while later, glad to see you safe and still tucked up beside him. He was surprised when your eyes flicked open, meeting his in a glance. 'Morning.’ You muttered, reaching your hand up to scratch behind his alert ears. He made a noise of enjoyment, closing his eyes for a moment. A yawn escaped him and he sat up, feeling himself begin to change back into a human. Luckily, his clothes were still intact, as it would’ve been embarrassing for him to have no clothes, or clothes that were destroyed where they needed to be the most intact.
You watched, noticing a short wince but nothing more. 'I miss your wolf already.’ You teased the tall male sitting like a mermaid beside you. 'He’s right here.’ He gestured to his chest lazily, a light smirk on his lips. 'Just not in a form. If you want him to talk to you, he can growl through this form.’
'What?’
'Mhm. Sounds weird, but it’s true. Here, listen.’ Sanha was silent for a moment until a guttural growl left his body and his soft brown eyes flickered a light blue for a millisecond. 'There he is.’ Sanha spoke again once his wolf had left again, watching your reaction.
'Amazing!’
'Really? You’re very open-minded for a human, hon.’ Hyuna came in, hair messy. 'But I’m thankful.’
'One day, you can help me with the pack. At your own pace. I know you’re unsure about them.’
'Maybe.’ You muttered. 'For now, I do have to get going. I have shows to binge and food to eat.’ Sanha stood. 'I’ll walk you home.’
You exited the oval, lazily walking alongside the man. 'If you wanted, you could come stay in my apartment in wolf form. I wouldn’t mind having a big, fluffy puppy wondering around. So long as you don’t eat me.’
'Sounds amazing. One day, I will. Somehow.’ He chuckled. 'You’re a bit whipped for me, aren’t you?’
'Weirdly, just a little. And I’m sure it’s the fact that you turn into a puppy once a month or so.’
'Fair enough. I’d be whipped for me too.’
You smirked at the man beside you. 'Cocky.’
