Space-Utah appreciation post
I fell in love with this kind of geology when I was in Utah. And I'm absolutely in love with Space-Utah after we got it like two times now, both in The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch.
Thank you Star Wars for this amazing view!
Thanks to boogieboba for the inspiration.

Stone With 1,600-Year-Old Irish Inscription Found in English Garden
A geography teacher, Graham Senior, stumbled across a rock with mysterious incisions while tidying his overgrown garden in Coventry, England. The discovery of a small stone carved with an early form of Celtic script has caused excitement among archaeologists.
The rectangular sandstone rock was found by Graham Senior in Coventry during lockdown in 2020 while he was weeding, but its true value was only recently understood.
The 11-centimeter-long and 139-gram rectangular sandstone rock had cryptic inscriptions on it that suggested a history spanning over 1,600 years, all written in the mysterious Ogham alphabet.
Ogham is an early medieval alphabet used to write the Archaic Irish language from the 4th to the 6th century and Old Irish from the 6th to the 9th century. It is usually found carved on stones in Ireland, Wales, and western Britain. It was the first written language in Ireland. The majority of the 400 or so known inscriptions from the Archaic Irish period are family name pillars that were built to announce land ownership.
Ogham is an extremely unique writing system among all writing systems, with lines arranged in groups of one to five only. The stones provide insight into the Irish language before the use of the Latin insular script.
Finds liaison officer for the Birmingham Museums Trust, Teresa Gilmore, told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that the discovery on an Ogham stone in the English midlands was a rare find.
“These finds do not turn up in the midlands. The bulk of Ogham inscriptions are found over in Ireland,” she said.
Professor Katherine Forsyth of Celtic Studies at the University of Glasgow conducted additional research that shed more light on the stone’s provenance. Her findings point to a period suggesting a timeframe ranging from the fifth to sixth centuries, with the possibility of an even earlier date in the fourth century.
The stone is inscribed on three of its four sides. The inscription on the stone, “Maldumcail/S/ Lass,” puzzled researchers, with interpretations pointing towards a version of the personal name Mael Dumcail, but the meaning of the S and LASS is unclear. Given the usual purpose and significance of ogham stones, it may be a location reference.
Theories regarding the origins of the stone abound, with speculations ranging from migration patterns to the presence of early medieval monasteries in the region.
The rock will be displayed at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, to which Senior has donated it permanently. It will feature in the forthcoming Collecting Coventry exhibition, which opens on 11 May.

I'm forever drawn to places where the Earth's geologic past has been thrust up from the mantle and opened like a crusty, craggy history book for all to read. The act of simply touching a rock formation that is hundreds of millions of years in the making and simultaneously connecting with the continent's primeval origins is both sacred and profound. Every layer of rock tells a story of its own. Against these accumulated histories, our mayfly existences barely register. Rock City at Coopers Rock State Forest is one of those very special places where the Earth has revealed her deepest secrets. The Pottsville Formation that underlies this part of Central Appalachia is estimated to be 300 hundred million years old. The massive slabs in the photos above are Connoquenessing sandstone, an erosion-resistant sedimentary rock that evokes the incredible drama of Earth's formation wherever it breaks through the crust.

Archovember 2024 Day 19 - Pelagornis sandersi
After the K-T extinction, the last remaining dinosaurs began to diverge, trying on many different shapes and sizes. While most birds stayed in the small forms that had kept them alive for so long, some achieved massive sizes. Some even reached these sizes while still retaining their ability to fly. One such genus was Pelagornis, a group of “pseudotooth birds.” While the gene for teeth was lost in birds, the Pelagornithids found a work-around, evolving tooth-like edges to their beaks. These were seabirds, using their saw-edged beaks to grip onto slippery fish and squid. The largest species of Pelagornis was Pelagornis sandersi. P. sandersi was not only the largest Pelagornis, but also had the widest wingspan of any known bird, estimated at 6.06 to 7.38 m (19.9 to 24.2 ft) long. P. sandersi had short, stumpy legs, and likely spent most of its time on the wing. It would have had to take off by dropping from cliffs, utilizing air currents to glide into the air. It would have been able to travel long distances like this, without landing, similar to modern day albatrosses.
Fossils of Pelagornis have been found worldwide, including in the Aridal Formation of Morocco, the Chandler Bridge Formation of South Carolina, the Bahía Inglesa Formation of Chile, the Black Rock Sandstone of Australia, the Molasse Coquilliere Formation of France, the Calvert Formation in Virginia, the Pisco Formation of Peru, the Castillo Formation and Capadare Formation of Venezuela, the Greta Formation of New Zealand, and the Purisima Formation of California. This worldwide distribution means they would have been living alongside a large variety of Eocene to Early Pleistocene animals, and eating a large variety of fish species. It is unknown why these giant seabirds went extinct, but they may have been encountered by archaic humans in the Early Pleistocene.

On the topic of Flight Rising (as a fellow FR enjoyer) I'm curious what flight(s) you've been in? If you dont want to share thats fair but it's interesting to hear peoples reasonings. I joined in the early days of sign up windows, didn't have internet and got put in Lightning by a friend who made the account for me. It has been years and years, don't even know that friend anymore and am still a die hard Spark.
I was actually a Light flight to begin with! Which is another thing that must be an Absolute Shocker, I'm sure. Girlboything who likes writing was in the flight well known for being full of weird writers.
My move was to the Wind flight because minty green is my favorite color. I do love the aesthetic of the wind, the kites, and the traveling, but I'm actually saving up gems to go to Earth next. I think I vibe the most with its lore, even though its scenery is a little uggo. I love how many cities are there, I love the idea of the crypts and the hidden treasures, preserving and documenting history.
I kinda wish you got a free flight change every like... 5 years. That's more than long enough to be fair I think. I've been playing since 2016 which is actually 8 years so... idk give me free flight change. let me out. im literally from the travel guys let me travel
#I kinda resent how uggo Earth's scenery is because rocks are gorgeous if you don't pick that dull dusty brown color#IF YOU NEED TO RELY ON GEMSTONES TO MAKE YOUR ROCKS LOOK GOOD YOU DID IT WRONG#(things i can equally yell at fr and an ugly diamond-block build in mincraft)#like to tie it back to the cats. Have you seen the GORGEOUS red sandstone formations in those parts of the modeled region?#ThunderClan's camp is a quarry and it was probably a sandstone quarry specifically#Because the sandstone in that region is a GORGEOUS shade of vibrant red#With white snow static that makes a breathtaking but subtle pattern to its banding#And like. The idea you can literally see layers of history in sedimentary rocks#ppl say rocks are boring but that's because they don't speak the language of the earth#It's a whole record of everything that happened in that geographic period of time#You can see where the world was covered in chixulub's ash#You can tell when a spot was a river and when it was a desert#And that's even without fossils which are EXTRA cool as shit#And they're NOT usually that ugly desaturated dusty brown#im going to go to earth flight and Edit Hue Shift the scenery it's gonna be great#pet site talk

Damp, cool, and overcast are the prevailing themes of this year's fall season. But even on the darkest of days, nature's inner light cannot be denied. On days like this, as a photographer, I get the benefit of longer exposure shots, which make the colors of the fall forest all the more vivid, expressive, and moody. My early morning hike in Cheat River Canyon reminded me how mist, carotenoids, sandstone, and moss can cast a magical spell that brings joy even on the darkest days.
