Beyond the Sea
Tri-Tober Fanfic shorts Prompt 5: Sand Setting: All / Any of Franchise Summary: Noman's Land is ancient and holds many secrets in its sands. (Aka, author thinks palentology is neat).
Prompt 5: Sand Beyond the Sea Vash leaned on the railing of the viewing deck of the Flourish watching the endless waves of sand.  “Small” (for a given value of “small”) sandworms breached the surface, chasing the sand steamer and a Grand Worm breached in the distance, against the low-hanging suns.  Some of the other passengers oohed and awwwwed, and some screamed, fearful of a creature that wasn’t anywhere near them.  The steamer shook slightly as a sand-wave hit the hull.  Sand was a dense material and this capering really shouldn’t have been possible, but the native creatures managed to make it work – built perfectly for efficient tunneling and insanely strong.  Vash tried to imagine the sand as water and failed because he had never seen so much water gathered into one place.  Imagining the sands as water just shifted the mental image he was trying to grasp onto back to sand.  Rem had shown him pictures and videos of the ocean when he was a child – the sunlit sea being one of her favorite things, and she often compared its vastness to the black outside of Ship Five’s windows, although she always said that space was…much deeper, much more.  She’d spoken of the interstellar journey of SEEDS as being akin to naval exploration in Earth’s ancient days when island nations found new islands and when people found unoccupied lands.  So, too, were people who found lands unknown to them, but inhabited and there was an entire dark history with that.    He knew that the sand-sea was the result of a water sea that had existed once upon a time. Great waters had buffeted rocks and ground them down into a seafloor, mostly shallow.  There was an entire history of this planet that neither humans nor Plants were privy to.  The worms knew, for as far back as their collective memory could reach, but unlike with his kin, the minds of the worms were something that Vash the Stampede could not touch.  In order for the breathable atmosphere and the protective ozone layer to exist well enough to make human and Plant habitation possible, this world had to have had a history at least somewhat like Earth’s in terms of geology and biology.  Vash had read about it… there had to have been liquid water here in the past – more than the paltry bit to be found in the clouds and occasional underwater springs that were struck, much more.  There had to have been bacteria and bacterial-mats that had generated oxygen, perhaps suffering a mass extinction from their own mindless processes, while paving the way for new forms of life.    Fossils were found occasionally in the rocks and scientists had some idea of how the worms might have come about.  Much more life that had once existed here was gone – Like the sea that had left behind the great swaths of sand loose enough for humans’ machines to plough through and for the descendants of the deep ancient creatures to frolic in.  And so Vash leaned on the railing, trying to imagine this history, hopelessly trying to imagine water, sweltering in his coat in the heat and wondering through the depths of time, past and future, what was beyond the sea.

Throughout the journey, he has been slowing down his pace

But I think it's here, at the very end, that he's the most stunning.
You might say resignation is guiding him at this point, but I don't think so.
Fear turned into acceptance. And bloomed into grace.

What I miss in Stampede and I miss it more and more with each episode... are all those people who are just surviving on Gunsmoke, while trying to make the best of it..those people who usually appear only for a moment, but make the place feel much more lively..Living their own stories...They are also a reminder for who its worth surviving and fighting for... All those random, yet charming individuals like: shopkeepers, round grandmas, sheriffs and their deputies, majors, hooligans,  little kids n their parents or guardians, bus drivers, shoemakers, plant technicians, bartenders, fellow travellers, doctors and nurses, postal workers, rude gawkers, soldiers, drunkards, clerks, sandsteamer workers, and gangsters who could change their ways. A WHOLE WORLD OF INTERESTING PEOPLE.
TLDR: I just adore interesting background characters and there are almost none in TRISTAMP
**under the cut is my compillation of some of the background characters from both the manga, few of the 98 episodes.. and like.. most of the background characters from first 7 episodes of stampede..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
meanwhile trigun stampede is like
Tumblr media
most of the background characters, even the more important ones, who drive the story forward, are either amalgams of many different people from the manga and 98 anime or they are quite bland and too characterless..reduced to parts of the background or collateral... and the world feels much emptier for it. (my love goes to those 3 insect hunters, those guys were great and what i want more of..they were also 2D animated) ...
And not to mention there are only about 8 models of basic citizens with two different skin tones of white, extreme same face syndrome, and most of them are thin except one slightly rounder fella..
there are also only about 2 models of goons for different factions, just with different clothes (the sandsteamer workers are all also the same guy...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and they all are kinda quiet and vacant... except the masked ones, cause nobody had to animate their lips moving and faces emoting...and except those two ladies who got shredded by knives..
While even more barren world can be charming too, this...
This..this saddens me..

yes, knives said "happy birthday" to vash. but I don't think he meant an actual date of july 21st. he said that because from his point of view, vash has been reborn and this is his literal day of birth
upd: wait hold on maybe I'm wrong, but why is the first episode set on May 25th then... I'm very confused now and don't know what's real anymore

Ideal trigun aesthetic: take the sleek sea creature vibes from tristamp (bioluminescence, the emphasis on blues, fishtanks instead of lightbulbs for plants, the underwater feel of the "higher dimension") & combine it with the heavy, busy industrial clunkiness of trimax, particularly evoking the feel of old diving suits
Gimme "sea monsters from ancient times" vibes for the twins and "ancient shipwreck" vibes for the ruins & tech

So I've had no time to write today bc work etc etc but I've been thinking about it like All day and
I have chapter 17 all plotted out, and tbh could potentially write it in a matter of days, brain willing. It's finally back to Not action, which as fun as action is to write its also fucking Hard. So it'll be nice not having to agonize over the sound of a fucking chain (Twice) etc etc. Add in the fact that it's gonna be angsty as hell (angst is always the Easiest for me to write) & I rly think I could knock this one out quickly.
And the Great news is that. Examining the timeline and what I have planned...
Wolfwood is definitely arriving in chapter 18. And not at the end like I'd suspected. No, he's probably gonna be there towards the Start.
I've gotten through the two most difficult arcs to write for early ITNL, so the ball is really rolling now. We are Finally getting places...

On the one hand it's frustrating that tristamp only covers like a week bc there is No Time for Development
On the other hand it's very funny that tristamp only covers a week. A hundred and fifty damn years and knives decides to send his highly experimental super soldier executioner out in the last WEEK to do the equivalent of escorting vash up the driveway. Wolfwood probably spent longer looking for vash than he did actually escorting him. Also in that last week vash got lassoed by the only tabloid writer willing to risk her life for a "stampede exclusive" and then breaks Knives's Uber Special Twin Plant Soup Mindmeld by yelling and also fascinates the conglomerate body of the locals who's been working with knives for a century.
A WEEK.

Quick question, has anyone been in the mood to write a TriStamp Knives and Tessla fic with all the new concept info? Like seriously, Knives had to deal with 149 years with an annoying shit of a older sister constantly pestering him with self-care (Did you even see the bags under his eyes?) or not treating Conrad like a nuisance at most. And of course, if the Plant Snuggie is alive, then Tess has every right to wrap him up in a murder burrito or tumble him in the eye-dome like a washing machine whenever he gets particularly cranky or powertrippy. And bonus points if Conrad (and/or Legato) get to see Knives, the self-proclaimed superior being, get manhandled by his own clothes like a feral kitten.
