Sandra Wusan gave birth to twin girls. Her contract with Cain had only called for one child, but what was she to do with a baby? She had just been released from the last of the ties that bound her. She was about to shape herself into something entirely new. She left both girls with Cain and set out to begin again.

Cain kept the children separated. There could be no chance of contamination if his project was to work. Neither girl was given a name. What was the point when they would never hear it? Instead the sisters, born 12 minutes apart, were referred to as Subjects 1 and 2.

It is not easy, being a baby. Having lost both mother and sister in quick succession, the girls had it harder than most. Cain did ensure that all of their physical needs were met. Nurses were hired to assist in regularly feeding, holding, and caring for the babies, but they were under strict orders to carry out their tasks in complete silence. Any sort of communication through words or gestures was forbidden in the girls’ presence. He also took a great interest in caring for them himself. After all, this was his great project, and one that he was going to do right.

I don’t think Jeannette’s scream would have any unique effect on Cass. Cass already experiences everyone else’s death as her own, true, but it’s still a horrifying traumatic experience each time. I think she would react the same way as everyone else.

The interesting question for me is wether Jeanette would even have to scream at all, or wether just looking at her would trigger Cass to experience Jeanette’s death. I personally think, as Jeanette is a corpse stuck in the moment of her murder, just looking would be enough.

Shiva, however, I think would be totally immune to Jeanette’s scream, and would probably listen to it recreationally.

Was thinking Jeanette needs to be in more comics. Was also thinking Cassandra needs more villains of her own. They should kill two birds with one stone and make them fight each other. Partly I think their fight banter would be god tier, partly I'm interested in what someone who can literally smell death would make of Cass and partly I want to see the person whose superpower is empathy fight the woman whose superpower is forcing you to feel her pain.

Originally written for DCU Rarepair Exchange 2024. All of my fandom friends can attest that I went fully down the rabbit hole, and kept messaging them about Shiva and DinahShiva (even though most of them do not care and only one of them even reads comics, lol), but I could not help myself; these two are so compelling.

I tried to write something that captured how obsessive Dinah and Shiva are about each other-- how they keep being drawn to each other, but how ultimately neither of them will ever change who they are. Two sides of the same coin, separated by their morals. I hope even a little bit of this dynamic came through!

It’s worse because Shiva is also in this weird grey area of potentially being a rape victim. He did break into her house, kill her sister, and then demand she have a child with him. Batgirl (2000) wrote it that Sandra was so grateful to David for freeing her from her love for her sister that she had his child as a kind of thank you gift? But considering how absurdly young she was at the time (no older than 20, while David was at least in his 40s), and the fact that David would not have taken no for an answer, it felt more like DC clumsily trying to dodge the issue. I really wish DC would either address this, or make Cass explicitly an IVF baby (especially since IVF has a MUCH higher rate of successful conception than natural fertilization anyway).

It’s very gross, because yes, Shiva absolutely did fail Cass in many ways, but she also had very little agency in the entire situation and never wanted to be a mother. They were both David’s victims.

Batgirls trade solicit saying Steph spoke for Cass's mind towards Shiva about her being a terrible mother really speaks to how badly DC needs to bring David Cain back cause these antagonistic parental relationships for Cass aren't landing as well when the parent the characters are screaming at isn't the reason for all of the trauma.

Shiva continually getting blamed for all the shit David Cain did is getting ridiculous
