Stuff I’m Looking Forward to in August
We are now deep into the Summer. No holidays this month, but here is what’s on my radar:
Movies:
Dreamin' Wild
This musical biopic is about brothers recording an album in the 70s and then the album finally gets discovered thirty years later. There’s a lot of musicians who have had similar experiences (Death comes to mind) but this is based on Donnie Emerson and his family. Opens 8/4.
Strays
Alright, I admit a bunch of celebrities voicing dogs didn’t have me at first, but I’m looking forward to it because it’s directed by Josh Greenbaum, director of one of my favorite documentaries of the last decade Too Funny to Fail and the trailer got me laughing. Opening 8/18.
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah
Adam Sandler has been on a roll lately and in his newest starring / producing vehicle, his actual wife and daughters co-star in this bat mitzvah comedy. Netflix premiere on 8/25.
Music:
Neil Young Chrome Dreams
Recorded from 1974 to 1977, this Neil Young album was never released. In 2007, he released the sequel to the widely bootlegged album. Excited to see it’s official release on 8/11 (review coming soon).
Aerosmith Greatest Hits
In 1980, Aerosmith released their Greatest Hits album filled with 10 hits from the 70s. It is one of their biggest selling releases (12 times platinum). It was re-issued in 1997 with more tracks. There have been other compilations since then, but this new deluxe edition of 44 tracks is coinciding with their upcoming farewell tour. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros Live at Acton Hall
Recorded on Nov. 15, 2002, this benefit concert was one of the final live appearances of Joe Strummer before his death on Dec. 22, 2002. Especially noteworthy about this concert is that Strummer was joined onstage for some songs by his old Clash bandmate Mick Jones. In 2012, there was a Record Store Day release of this, but this marks the first official release on vinyl and CD and remastered. Album drops 8/18 (review coming soon).
Alice Cooper Road
Call this my Summer of Alice Cooper: in June I got to review his super group Hollywood Vampires’ live album, then I got to cover the re-releases of School’s Out and Killer, and just last week I saw Hollywood Vampires live in Boston. Now the King of Shock Rock is back with his 22nd solo album, dropping 8/23 (review coming soon).
TV:
Ahsoka
Rosario Dawson stole some scenes as Ahsoka Tano on The Mandalorian. Now the character is getting her own limited series taking place post-Episode 6 around the time of Mandalorian. Disney + premiere on 8/23
Conventions:
FAN EXPO Boston
The annual Boston comic con hits the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Good news is that even with the WGA and SAG strikes, celebrities can attend and sign and even do some panels (as long as it’s not about struck work). This year’s guests include Henry Winkler, William Shatner, Hayden Christiensen, Jason Lee, Peter Weller, Robin Wright and more. The fun happens from 8/4 to 8/6.

Amanda Palmer Live Show Review: 4/12, Chicago Theatre
BY JORDAN MAINZER
She’s a divisive singer-songwriter and writer in terms of ideas, tone, and simply the taste of the audience. But I’d be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks Amanda Palmer isn’t a great storyteller. That’s the crux of her current tour, There Will Be No Intermission, named after her recently released album. Between each song last Friday at the Chicago Theatre, Palmer gave context through stories, often longer than the songs that bookend her talk, sometimes combined. To see how specific elements in her life influence the songs was illuminating, especially because many of her songs, especially those on her new album, feature them quite literally.
For one, the first name of Palmer’s late childhood next-door neighbor Anthony, a therapist who introduced her to formative music and “never told [her] what to do” (except not to date a boy addicted to heroin), comes up often, prominently in “Machete” and “A Mother’s Confession”. The 2013 Boston Marathon bombings that prompted her to write a controversial poem trying to find humanity in the bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, caused her to be reviled even from those on the same side of the political divide. (“You’d think I shot their children,” Palmer quipped.) Her three abortions, the last of which she was unsure she would go through with due to her internal back-and-forth about wanting to be a mother, became inspiration for a quest to write a true white whale--a good abortion song--which she eventually did in this album’s “Voicemail for Jill”. Yet, Palmer admitted what others perceived as a failure. “Oasis” from Who Killed Amanda Palmer is a satirical song about abortion; after playing it, Palmer explained that she was criticized for apparently making light of date rape and abortion. “That’s my job,” she told the crowd, confused. “To go into the dark and make light.”
Even more impressive, Palmer weaved covers into her story. When she was considering becoming a parent, the pervasiveness of the Frozen brand turned her off from doing so. So in covering Jodi Benson’s “Part Of Your World” from The Little Mermaid, Palmer, in a funny and brilliant mental exercise, instructed the audience to hear the song from three simultaneous points of view: a mother wondering what her life would be like if she was still a childless artist, vice versa, and a zygote itself. (For good measure, she added in the vagina, too.) And for those who came just to hear The Dresden Dolls’ “Coin Operated Boy”, not only did she perform it immediately after the intermission, but she played the opening chords at the behest of the audience whenever the show was getting “too sad.” “It’s a palate cleanser,” she said. “The musical equivalent of sage.”
As a performer, Palmer was raw, borderline crying her way through songs when she wasn’t belting them and pounding at the piano or strumming her ukulele. But the show was more a one-woman show than a concert, consisting of equally funny and painful anecdotes about Googling “abortion near me”, waiting in the lobby while an Adam Sandler movie was blaring, giving birth with the help of “witchy midwives” in the woods of Tennessee, going on a prison retreat experiencing the power of radical empathy, and her eventual kid watching Frozen three times in a row. Perhaps it’s her experience with Patreon, essentially crowdfunding her entire life beyond her creative endeavors, that has helped her become a more effectively open person, let alone songwriter. If The Dresden Dolls (who, according to Palmer, are serious about making new music) are theatrical, Palmer is both dramatic and ultimately real, her stories likely achieving her aim of making the world and trauma a little bit easier to cope with for others.

Marisol Escobar (1930 – 2016) was a French sculptor of Venezuelan heritage who worked in New York City.
"For the best part of a dizzying decade (60s), Marisol has been the talk of New York. When her breakthrough solo show opened at the Stable Gallery in New York in 1962, “word spread like wildfire,” remembered gallery owner Eleanor Ward. The show was described by Irving Sandler in the New York Post as “one of the most remarkable shows to be seen this season,” and by fellow critic Max Kozloff as “the cause célèbre of the Spring.”
