i've held this off for quite some time and now my two cents are beginning to rust. but i really hope that, some day, we can all be creative again. and by "be creative", i really just mean writing the things that we truly want to write. there's nothing wrong with a written work being slightly similar to another (when written with pure intention, of course), nor is there anything wrong with not being able to write like shakespeare, because if that were the case, this community would be in shambles.

but i've noticed a pretty dull repetitiveness in popular fics, and it has now become increasingly obvious that majority of the posts dominating the tags were created for the sole purpose of being in that position. and i'm not saying that i blame anyone for that. everyone wants to be popular, no matter how much we deny it. but upon the recurring complaints of how nobody wants to read/write fluff anymore or how too many smutty stories these days lack plot and sensuality, there is a very obvious need to rectify those problems. and my suggestion is for everyone to start being creative again, as in write the things that are in our hearts, regardless of whether it's popular or not. because when you are passionate and genuine about something, a trope, genre or style (again, popular or not), believe me. it shows.

and i'm getting really sick and tired of people saying not to worry about notes as the final solution, because we all know that it fucking sucks when something that you've taken the time and care to make and share (rhyme unintended) gets thrown into the rough. you feel like you've wasted your time, and it frustrates you knowing that there is no way in hell you're going to get it back.

there was once a time on tumblr where, regardless of your follower count, regardless of how simple or complex your work was, regardless of how popular the trope was, almost every single fic had an equal chance of being noticed by masses. and that was only made possible by all of us allowing our fics to be noticeably unique in their own way.

so let's do that, please. let's not have shame in being unique.

i don't think "multilingual person momentarily slips into their first language rather than the language currently being spoken" is a bad trope, per se, but as it is typically used it seems that monolingual people (especially people who have english as a first language) fundamentally misunderstand why it happens.

like. for example, the trope where a spanish speaking character says some spanish expression and everyone looks at them funnily to explain what that meant and they seem caught off guard and belatedly realize "oh sorry i forgot to speak in english." it's...not that this never happens, but rather it's only believable if we had to switch from only-spanish-for-a-chunk-of-time to only-english. if the character was already speaking in english and "forgot" for a moment it's much less believable.

other than that, it's usually not a "slip" or "mistake." more often than not there's just a word or phrase that feels more natural or accurate for the conversation, or the word/phrase we know in our first language doesn't have a direct translation. this is a choice we are making to use the more natural or accurate word/phrase instead, and we are usually prepared to explain it to people if anyone asks, or start explaining right after using it. this is especially true if we're amongst friends we interact with a lot. we will likely keep using that word or phrase in the future, so it's handy to explain it at least once.

like. idk there's just some odd lack of thought/agency assigned to characters when it's written as a mistake rather than a choice, and it feels like this effect is just an extension of how people view those who are ESL. it doesn't sit well with me.

I love audiobooks and a good one can change your life but the thing about realizing you Do Not Vibe with a narrator halfway through a book but still finishing said book is that it calls your entire experience of the book into question like would I have enjoyed that a lot more if I read it physically or would I have not liked it that much anyway? anyway I may need to read the iwtv book again to decide if I actually unfortunately didn’t like it the way I wanted to or if it was all the narrators fault but I need to do that in several months must take a break for now
