SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A 20-year employee of the San Jose Police Officers Association charged in a scheme to distribute drugs, including fentanyl.
"I was just absolutely taken aback, shocked, became saddened," Sean Pritchard, President of the San Jose Police Officers Association said, "And as the days have gone by, I'm at a place where I'm now I'm angry."

Sean Pritchard, president of the San Jose Police Officer's association says he first got a call from federal authorities last Friday that Joanne Segovia, the union's executive director, was charged with attempting to import illegal synthetic opioid drugs from overseas, specifically valeryl fentanyl.
Federal prosecutors says it was part of a scheme to distribute them in the U.S.
Pritchard says Segovia had been with the union for nearly 20 years.

"This person has been really known as the grandma of the POA, and it's not the woman that we have known for well over a decade and so that's why it's been so difficult," Pritchard said, "A woman who has helped fallen officer's families, helped organize fundraisers when officer's children are sick. That's the person we know."
Investigators say Segovia, 65, used her personal and office computers to order the drugs and agreed to distribute them elsewhere in the U.S.
The SJPOA says they had no knowledge of it and are conducting an internal investigation.

The union says Segovia handled front desk operations but did not make decisions for the organization.
They still don't know what her exact intentions were with the drugs.
According to the criminal complaint, Homeland Security agents were led to Segovia through an investigation that looked into a network they say ships controlled substances made in India.
A network operative's phone was searched and they found messages that were found to be linked to Segovia and her San Jose address.
Investigators found that between October of 2015 and January 2023, Segovia allegedly had approximately 61 shipments mailed to her home coming from countries all over the world, from locations that included Hong Kong, Hungary, India, and Singapore.

The shipments had labels that included "Wedding Party Favors," "Gift Makeup," and "Chocolate and Sweets," federal officials said.
Federal investigators intercepted those shipments and say they found thousands of narcotic pills.
According to the complaint, Segovia continued to order controlled substances even after being interviewed by federal investigators in February. On March 13, federal agents seized a parcel addressed to Segovia in Kentucky, containing valeryl fentanyl, a fentanyl analog. The package reportedly originated from China on March 10 and declared its contents as a clock.
Santa Clara County supervisor Cindy Chavez heads the county's fentanyl working group that works to combat the opioid crisis locally.

"What's really concerning me is that it's just a reminder of how accessible this is," she said, of the news, "And that we, from a law enforcement and a community perspective, need to be much more aggressive and much more assertive about how we deal with interrupting that chain that that we just have been unable to break."
ABC7 reached out to Segovia and have not heard back.
The complaint states that she denied any illegal activity in initial interviews with investigators and then later tried to blame her housekeeper.
Segovia is due in court Friday at 1 p.m.
If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 20 years.

TW: climate change, wildfires, hurricanes, woe.
Sorry, I know you follow me for Good Omens stuff, but I’m freaking out.
San Diego doesn’t get hurricanes, but one, (a category 4???) is coming for us.
I’m a born and raised San Diegan and I can’t believe I’m typing this at all. But here we are, facing Hurricane Hilary and collectively holding our breath, wondering if we’ll be okay. Wondering what we’ll look like in a few hours.
I’m a worrier. I worry. I worry for our loud wonderful parrots who wake me up every day, and for our marine wildlife who I love with all my heart. I fear for our homeless community, who have already dealt with enough this year just existing, and who are too often children. I worry for the people who believe they’ll be okay, will make a bad decision or two, and prove themselves wrong.
It all makes me think of 2003.

For a week that October, it felt like the world was ending. The Cedar Fire, which was the biggest fire in California history (might still be) burned for a week. I was little.
We had never had snow days (the only snow we get out here comes in cone form), but suddenly white ash was falling like snow and school was canceled. This was the first revelation to me that we were really In It.
I remember sitting at the sliding glass door with my big sister, small feet pressed against the glass, as we watched the sky turn black from smoke and ash. I remember how you could only tell it was daytime because you could still see the sun behind the smoke. It was this ominous, dull red orb, like a dying ember, like Sauron’s eye, like God had abandoned us but stuck around to watch til the credits rolled. Even inside, we held wet washcloths over our noses and mouths so we wouldn’t inhale the ash that snuck into the house through cracks we didn’t know we had.

I remember my dad, crying and clutching the phone, as he begged my grandma to follow evacuation orders to leave their house. Grandpa didn’t want to go, so he stood on the roof with a garden hose, watching a wall of fire two blocks away as it ate trees and homes. He stood up there, spraying the roof like it would make any difference, while Grandma broke down and screamed for him to escape while they still could. Dad kept saying “leave him, Mom, leave him!”
I’ll be honest: that fucked me up.

Scripps Ranch, their part of town, has eucalyptus trees. They’re oily. They blow up when they catch fire. He only agreed to leave when he watched one explode a few houses away. My loyal, loving grandma didn’t leave him behind.
That taught me something strange about love that I haven’t been able to untangle since. I love my grandfather, but I never have forgiven him for what he put her through that day. What he prioritized under the black skies and white ash and red sun when people were dying. I wonder if he thinks he won, that he beat the fire, because their house didn’t burn in the end. I wonder if he thinks of himself as David and the fire Goliath, not realizing that his David was so small, Goliath hadn’t ever known he existed.
I hope so much that we don’t get more Davids this time around.
That people don’t hear about 19ft waves and grab their boards. Don’t drive their cars through the same place it always floods in Mission Valley, the same place people always end up drowning. Don’t try to save a house and lose a life instead.
That fire season was our worst, but fire response has improved so much since. Everyone said it was so bad because we hadn’t been prepared; now we do backburns, controlled burns, we’re better about campfire education. We’re safer now. We listen to evacuation orders. We have bug out bags and back up plans and binders where we keep our important documents. Aside from the occasional low-grade panic when I smell fire in the air that may be a barbecue, may not, I’m not really even afraid of wildfires now, only sad for the places impacted by them, like Hawaii and Canada. I find myself wondering what their sun looks like.
When I think back, I also remember how everyone came together to help. Firefighters from across the country and around the world came to help fight. Came to help us. It chokes me up as I write- especially when I think about the active fire maps and remember we only have so many firefighters.
I hope we don’t need backup this time. But I’m scared anyway.
Because we don’t have hurricane practice. This is new. The rain this year was new. The October-June winter was new. I’m scared this is is like 2003 and we’ve got a massive deadly natural event and no idea how to fight it. We didn’t build for this.
I hope this is just a dramatic response to what winds up being nothing. I was in Ireland during Hurricane Ophelia, and that was a bit of wild weather, but most people shrugged it off. I’m crossing fingers and everything else I can for an Ophelia situation.

To any San Diegans reading: don’t shoot the Hurricane.
But if it’s worse, then I just want to say I love my city. I love the way we held each other up in 2003 and 2007 and 2020-22. I hope we never have to again, but I’m grateful I have all of you if we do.
I just sandbagged around the house, covered the windows with blankets, filled the freezer with ice. Everything’s charging, my flashlights have batteries, and my bathtub is clean and full of water. I’m not religious, but I still said a little prayer for the fish in my pond and brought in the patio umbrella. I couldn’t catch the black cat that hangs out in my yard so I said a little prayer for her, too.
I hope I reblog this on Monday to tell you I’m a silly and melodramatic idiot, but today I’m scared. Climate change is real and something must be done. I’m sick of fires and floods and this self-fulfilling prophecy that the end is nigh.
We still have options. We have addresses (figuratively speaking). We know how to build the guillotines (figuratively speaking). We outnumber those who would have our streets flood and our homes burn for personal profit- and we can permanently separate them from it (figuratively speaking). And I am tired of speaking in codes about who our enemies are now that the planet is fighting back. I’m sick of having to say I’m figuratively speaking.

On November 27, 1978, angered that he wasn’t to be reappointed to the Board of Supervisors slot he resigned from on November 10, Dan White enters San Francisco City Hall at 10:30 a.m. through a basement window.
Mayor George Moscone agrees to meet with White, who shoots the mayor four times at point-blank range with a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver.
Leaving the 49-year-old father of four dead, White reloads and then walks to where the supervisors’ offices are located and asks Supervisor Harvey Milk, the state’s first openly gay elected official, if he can speak with him in private.
White ushers Milk into White’s former office and kills him with five gunshots, two to the back of his head.
A stunned and tearful Dianne Feinstein, president of the board, announces the murders: “Both Mayor Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk have been shot and killed… The suspect is Supervisor Dan White,” she tells reporters.
Tens of thousands of mourners form an impromptu candlelight march, beginning in the Castro District and ending at City Hall. Joan Baez leads the assembled in “Amazing Grace.” Moscone and Milk lay in state at City Hall. Moscone’s funeral is attended by 4,500 people.
Feinstein becomes mayor – the first woman to hold the office. She is mayor until 1988 and wins election as a U.S. Senator for California in 1992.
White surrenders to police officers one hour after the shootings. He is tried for first-degree murder, but his lawyers convince the jury that White’s depression creates “diminished mental capacity,” which prevents the premeditation necessary for first-degree murder.
Convicted of voluntary manslaughter, White is paroled in 1984 —  spending just over five years behind bars for the murders. On October 21, 1985, the 39-year-old White runs a hose from the exhaust pipe of his 1979 yellow Buick LeSabre into the passenger compartment, poisoning himself with carbon monoxide, the New York Times reports.

The Crimes of Dr. Crippen

Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen was born on September 11, 1862, in Coldwater, Michigan and was the only surviving child of his parents Andresse Skinner and Myron Augustus Crippen who was a merchant.
Crippen first studied at the University of Michigan Homeopathic Medical School, and graduated later at the Cleveland Homeopathic Medical College in 1884.
Crippen married his first wife, Charlotte Jane Bell, but when she died of a stroke in 1892, Crippen sent his son, Hawley Otto, who was only a toddler, to live with his parents in San Hose, California.
Dr. Crippen began practicing medicine in New York City, marrying his second wife, Corrine "Cora" Turner in 1894. Cora was actually a music hall singer who sang under the name, Belle Elmore. Also in 1894, Crippen began working for Dr. Munyon, who had a homeopathic pharmaceutical company.
In 1897, Dr. Crippen and Cora moved to England, even despite the fact that Crippen's medical qualifications were not met to practice in the UK. Crippen was working as a distributor of patent medicines around this time, while Cora was socializing.
Dr. Crippen was fired by Munyon's in 1899 for spendin too much time managing Cora's career. Dr. Crippen went on to work as a manager for Drouet's Institution for the Deaf, where a young woman named Ethel Le Neve was his typist in 1900.
By 1905, Crippen and Ethel were having an affair. That same year, Crippen and Cora moved to 39 Hilldrop Crescent, Camden Road, Holloway and took in lodgers to help with their income. Cora ended up having an affair with one of these lodgers, and due to this, Crippen officially made Ethel is mistress in 1908.
On January 31, 1910, the Crippen home hosted a party, and after said party, Cora had disappeared. Dr. Crippen's excuse for his wife's disappearance was that she had gone back to the US, later adding that she had died there. After this, Ethel moved in with Dr. Crippen and actually began to wear Cora's clothes and jewelry.
The first mention of Cora's disappearance came from her friend, Kate "Vulcana" Williams. The disappearance was taken more seriously when people associated with the Scotland Yard Superintendent, Frank Froest were pushing for the matter to be looked into.
Police searched Dr. Crippen's house but found nothing. Dr. Crippen under questioning did eventually admit he had made up the story of his wife dying, because he wanted to avoid the embarrassment over him leaving her, fleding to the US with one of her lovers. Authorities were satisfied with Crippen's story, however he did not know that and instead fled with Ethel to a hotel in Brussels.
The next day the two got on the SS Montrose, headed for Canada. This made them look suspicious, so police further searched Crippen's house, finding the torso of a human body buried under the brick floor of the basement. Traces of a calming drug called scopolamine was in the torso as well.
The torso was identified as being Cora, however her head, limbs and skeleton were never recovered.
Dr. Crippen and Ethel who was disguised as a boy were heading across the Atlantic ocean, and the captain noticed them. Notifying the Chief Inspector, Walter Dew, of this, he boarded a ship from Liverpool and beat Dr. Crippen to Canada, arriving in Quebec.
Dew himself actually boarded the next ship disguised as a pilot. When entering on board, Dr. Crippen was invited to meet the pilots to which Dew removed his cap and said, "Good mornin, Dr. Crippen. Do you know me? I'm Chief Inspector Dew from Scotland Yard."
Dr. Crippen's response was apparently, "Thank God it's over. The suspense has been too great. I couldn't stand it any longer." And then held out his wrists for the handcuffs. Both Crippen and Ethel were arrested on board on July 31, 1910.
Dr. Crippen was tried at the Old Bailey, on October 18, 1910. The trial lasted 4 days. Though they argued that the torso could not be totally proven to be Cora, there was a piece of skin that had a scar that was similar to Cora's medical history.
Other evidence was brought forth, such as a piece of a pyjama top that Cora had given Dr. Crippen the year before, in 1909, and hair that matched Cora's. During the trial, Dr. Crippen did not show any remorse for his wife. He was only concerned with Ethel's reputation.
Dr. Crippen was found guilty in just 27 minutes. Ethel was only charged for being an accessory after the fact and was eventually acquitted.
Crippen never actually gave a motive for why he killed his wife, however many theories have risen over the years. A late Victorian and Edwardian barrister, Edward Marshall Hall believed Dr. Crippen had been giving Cora hyoscine as a depressant but accidentally gave her too much, causing her to overdose.
In 1981, multiple British newspapers reported that a man claimed to have met Ethel in 1930 and she confessed to him that Dr. Crippen murdered Cora because she had syphilis.
Another theory is that Dr. Crippen was carrying out illegal abortions and the torso was actually that of a previous patient, not Cora. Others find it strange that Dr. Crippen would bury his wife's body under the floor, but managed to get rid of her head and limbs with no discovery.
Dr. Crippen was hanged at Pentonville Prison, London, on November 23, 1910. Ethel sailed to the US before moving to Canada and found work as a typist. She supposedly returned to Britain in 1915, and died in 1967. Crippen had requested that a photo of Ethel be placed in his coffin and buried with him which was approved.
Think the story's over? Think again.
In October 2007, a forensic scientist named David Foran claimed that mitochondrial DNA evidence showed the remains under Dr. Crippen's basement floor were not that of Cora. Using genealogy, they identified 3 of Cora's living relatives who gave their DNA to be compared.
The original remains were also tested using an assay of the Y chromosome, finding the flesh sample was male, not female. This research team also argued that a scar that was found on the torso and had been identified as a scar that Cora had was incorrect.
This new DNA evidence has been disputed, with a journalist commenting that this team used a special technique that is too new, and working on a century old slide isn't the best sample to use to compare DNA.
In December 2009, the UK's Criminal Cases Review Commission declared that the Court of Appeal would not hear the case to pardon Dr. Crippen posthumously, meaning he is still known forever in history as having murdered his wife.

A MILLION MONDAY MILES
That was a great weekend. I made 20 or so new friends, learned a ton, and got in some great riding. Except LA. Riding in LA sucks donkey balls.
I missed an exit in LA Thursday and ended up doing way more LA miles then planned, but I eventually figured it out and was able to take a less crowded route. 
It was 50ish degrees when I left home and close to 90 as I rode along the edge of the high desert. It was 70s during the day and 30s during the night at the campground. There’s still snow in the San Bernardino Mountains too.
Friday I took a ride to Big Bear Lake. It’s not bad for a remote tourist town. I ate at Tropicali, a funky Hawaiian inspired place rated the best in California. I really enjoyed the experience and their Tikijuana bowl was delicious. Smoked chicken, rice, beans, pineapple, onions... awesome.
I got to see a bunch of different hammock setups, and there were clinics on first aid, hanging without trees, and making whoopie slings (knots and ropes for hammocks). There was a potluck dinner and there wasn’t a bad cook in the bunch. 
Barton Flats Campground is nice, and the camphosts are awesome, but something happened with the water and they shut down the restrooms and showers and brought in four porta-potties. They set them up at the entrance, which were a long long way from us, especially if you really had to go. They also filled up quickly with a full weekend of campers, if you get my drift. I shit you not.
I made it home in only four hours. Well, almost. There’s a sensor on the bike that stalls the bike if you put it in gear with the kickstand down, and that sensor started giving me trouble this weekend. I stopped to gas up about 15 miles from the house and that dang sensor pretty much gave up on me. After 500 miles and it quits 15 fucking miles from home. UGH!
After over half an hour of trying I went into the convenience store and paid a small fortune for a can of WD40. I hosed down every bit of the kickstand and everything surrounding it, hoping maybe the sensor was just gummed up, along with the clutch in case it was involved in the shenanigans. It worked!
At least enough to get me home. I tried again once I got here and it quit working again. I’ll mess with it today if it stops raining. I may have to order a new sensor if it’s something if I can replace or take it to the shop if I can’t. 
Lily and neighbor cat Raja were quick to welcome me home. Jackie and Rebecca had to act nonchalant to punish me for being gone, but they were obviously happy and both had the zoomies. Jackie forgave me and slept on top of me most of the night. 
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to wash the campfire smoke out of my clothes.

A video of an art gallery owner abusing a homeless person has made its rounds on social media, ultimately leading to the man’s arrest. Identified as Collier Gwin, the 71-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins issued a misdemeanor battery arrest warrant, the Los Angeles Times reported. 
While the victim did not seek to file charges, evidence gathered by the district attorney was sufficient to proceed with charging Gwin with misdemeanor battery for intentionally and unlawfully spraying water on a woman who was sitting on a sidewalk outside of his gallery, the District Attorney's Office said.

Welcome to the DOS
Welcome to the United States Department of Objectoid Study.
We are a small branch of the government dedicated to the observation and research of objectoids. If you live in an area without an objectoid population, you may be unfamiliar with this subspecies of human.
To keep things short, objectoids are humans fused with common objects, such as a woman with a fire hose tail, or a man with a clock in his eye. They make up about .5% of the global population and are most highly concentrated in San Francisco, California. Many objectoids have superhuman abilities that relate to whatever their object is, and it is our job to find out how these abilities work, and how to optimize them for use by the Objectoid Crimes Division as objectoid agents.
Our main facility is based in San Francisco, so that we can be close to the Toy Town district, where the majority of objectoids live, although we also have other locations across the country, and a few small outreach programs operating overseas.
This blog will be used to share unclassified information regarding objectoid research, as well as answer questions from the general public.

Thanks to films and television, many people I encounter during my travels outside of the United States are surprised to learn that California is not a wonderland of palm trees, sleek automobiles, handsome dudes, and radiant blondes. Also, that it snows here, that San Francisco is not the capitol, and that -- alas -- you are not a movie star.
Why anyone would take any of the above assumptions to be true is not worth much further thought, except that we're all enchanted by fantasies, no? Especially our own? Even fantasies we didn't realize we had? Let's say, for example, you're in Avignon, France in a hardware store looking for a fitting for the nozzle of a garden hose, when a stranger walks up and tells you that he and his wife "super-enjoyed" your latest film. It would be best to say, "merci," and walk away, basking in the glow of your own vanity. That is, unless vanity gets the best of you, and after a couple of questions you learn which movie star the man had mistaken you for. And you discover, immediately and sadly, that vanity, disappointment and humility are three sides of the same coin.
So, wonderlands aside, here's an image of California you might see if you were on a flight landing in the Central Valley, in Sacramento, the capitol, at dawn on a morning like today. No cars, no blondes, no snow. No film stars either. Neither real ones, nor ones in somebody's imagination.

The Essential Water Heater Maintenance Checklist

How much thought do you give your water heater? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think about it very much at all. Many of us just expect it to stay tucked out of sight, providing us with hot water, and we don’t give it a thought until something goes wrong. Unfortunately, this approach to water heaters is short-sighted. With a little bit of maintenance, you can help your water heater running more efficiently and even prolong its lifespan. Here, we offer a water heater checklist to help you stay on top of your water heater maintenance. - Know your water heater. If your water heater was in place when you moved into the house, you might not even know the manufacturer or age of the appliance. Knowing the manufacturer and model will give you access to the owner’s manual, which can give you specific details for maintaining the water heater. Knowing your water heater’s age is even more important. Most water heaters last anywhere from five to 15 years, depending on your usage and whether you have hard water. Replacing it before it begins to fail can save you expensive emergency repairs. - Perform a visual inspection. Look at the water heater closely, noting any damage to the pipes, pipe joints, or tank. Rusting and leaking are two common types of damage you might see, and these warrant further inspection by a professional. If your water heater tank is showing signs of rust, the metal is deteriorating, and this could lead to a flood if you don’t call in a plumber. - Maintain the right temperature. Keeping your water heater set to 120 degrees is the safest option for a few reasons. First, keeping it at a higher temperature can cause scalding. Additionally, when the water heater is too hot, it can result in water heater buildup of minerals, as well as corrosion in the tank. - Flush the tank. Once or twice a year, turn off the electricity or gas to the heater, shut off the cold water supply, and connect a hose to the drain valve. Open the hot handle of any faucet and drain the tank, then remove the hose. Draining the water heater tank will clear out sediment and preserve your water heater’s efficiency. Once the tank is empty, close the drain valve, remove the hose, open the cold water supply, open the hot water faucets throughout your house, and wait until water flows from them to turn power back on to the heater. - Check the anode rod. Your “sacrificial” anode rod is a long metal rod designed to attract corrosive minerals, removing them from the system. Check it for damage, and if it’s too corroded, have it replaced by a licensed plumber. Anode rods only work when they’re in good condition. - Have a professional check the valve. The pressure relief valve is a safety device that prevents the buildup of pressure and excessive temperature in your tank. You could check it yourself, but it’s better to have this done by a professional. Without a properly functioning temperature and pressure valve, the water heater tank could explode, so if yours is not working well, it should be replaced. - Ask your plumber about water softening or filtration. Hard water and excess minerals can damage your water heater, so it’s worth considering a water softener or filtration system to extend the lifespan of your water heater. Your plumber will know the conditions in your area and can advise you on the best steps to take to keep your water heater in good working condition. TIPS ON PUMPING GAS
I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. So here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon:
Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline in San Jose , CA deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.
One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.
Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.
