Game 14: Samurai Shodown V Perfect (2023) Judging Samurai Shodown V is a hassle because they are effectively 3 games that are exactly the same with minor differences that make 2 of them better than the first one, and largely it just comes down to game feel. V Perfect has everything that Special had as well as a story mode, kinda, and some more tweaks and balances of the cast. While I do think that V Perfect is a better version of V Special and V Special is a better version of V; I don't think V Perfect is (ironically) that special.
I think the major problem V Perfect has is that it can only improve so much on itself. Literally a game that feels like it cooked itself for too long that just feels like it should have been it's own game. Perhaps V Perfect's saving grace is simply that it's not packaged as a standalone game as it's paired with the Neo Geo Collection of Samurai Shodown rather than being sold separately. Like don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying V Perfect is a bad game, it's just how much can you really improve V Special before you just have a new game on your hands? V Perfect does have some nice text story to character endings, and some slightly better presentation tho. The problem is that, that's about it. V Perfect was made after Samurai Shodown VI, and thus has to work with the constrictions that come with that. While I do think you can replace V Special with V Perfect; really it just comes down to how much time you have had with either game. If V Special feels like it's version 1.5 of Samurai Shodown V then I'd say V Perfect is a 1.6 version.
Largely your enjoyment of V Perfect is the novelty of it. For those newer to the series, V Perfect is perhaps the best version to play Samurai Shodown V, and literally the latest version of said game. For those that had more time with V Special, I'm sure V Perfect just feels like a glorified patch that does some nice things for lore, but ultimately doesn't really make it worth the same amount of time you put in with V Special. Don't want it to seem like I'm not grateful for this game's existence though as going from the cancelled final game for Neo Geo to being a neat little bonus in the Neo Geo Collection is pretty great. Just don't expect a big jump in quality compared to it's previous versions.

Some Stray Worldbuilding Elements
Someone pointed out to me recently that a lot of movie fights are constrained by what will fit in a camera frame. This leads to, among other things, often misleading or minimal visual examples of the proper use of long-distance weapons. So if you plan to have proper use of arrow volleys or tank battles, make sure you read up on their historical use in warfare. The wonderful thing about a book is we can make the view as wide as we like. Take advantage of it!
If you want a good visual of a pretty realistic, desperate life-or-death struggle between two characters at melee range, though, you might be interested in checking this movie out.
Sabu and Ichi's Detective Stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojrHZqBFX1E
In Edo, a group of masked samurai storms a seafood wholesaler and commits murder, but the deaths have only begun....
Information I’ve found says was broadcast in 1981, as part of Fuji Television’s “Jidai Geki Special”. The plot was based on Shotaro Ishimori’s popular comic, specifically the story “One Leg of Darkness”.
It’s the last about 15 minutes that have the showdown between Sabu as an okappiki and a mad samurai. It’s long; I’m told it’s brutal. I personally didn’t have that reaction, when you’re fighting for your life you do what you have to and there was relatively little blood or injury compared to a lot of modern movies. But it does show someone having to take minutes to wear an opponent down long enough that the enemy finally collapses. Writers, take note!
Another few bits of interest. Want to see an example of a smart monster luring prey?
youtube
A green heron who figured out how to use bait to lure a fish!
Or real examples of what cavalry horses can do, and would know how to deal with?
youtube
Cossack trick riding. I was particularly impressed that they could get horses to jump the fluttering banners. And slashing bottles at head height, spraying water on horse and rider? Yes, a cavalry horse would need to be used to that, think about it....

FFXIV 7.0 job guess - Painter
Mythril foil hat disclaimer
Relm's painter = TMNT Donatello named after a painter + FGO Foreigner Hokusai fights with a brush + Magic class for bringing painting to life
Tumblr media
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are name after painters (biggest hint and thought line for me)
Relm is a painter
Donatello fights with a quarterstaff
Foreigner class Hokusai (or his daughter Oi in this case... long story) fights with a brush!!! and her moves are really pretty!!!!!
That Stormblood raid - Sigmascape 2.0
Paint Emote
youtube
Finally quarterstaff without going Lancer!!! Alternate weapons, mop, fountain pen, pencils, brushes, broom, regular quarterstaff
Or quarterstaff is the melee job so..... covering base because Donatello
Can't just quarterstaff without stepping on Estinien's territory
My job mentor can't be a teenage ninja painter koujin or a qiqirn (Splinter) Is there a meme lord on the Dev team?
Job quest involves a young painter girl
Some Orthardian guy fixated with koujin soup
Do I have to shell out all my TMNT and FFVI memories just to guess this?
Stormblood got added to free trial because Teenage magic painter koujin's homeground in Tamamizu?
The Artist Alphinaud finds a magic paint brush and muscled in on the new job..... Well magic ranged
short of a location with Renaissance vibes for human painters quartet, Orthard folklore takes over with magic paintbrush found in Tamamizu? And we Donatello
Is very colorful job but I only have Bard for reference but see Enshrined Byakko lutebow for for inkblot reference
Depend on your brush for sumi ink black, oil brush colors, watercolor, watercolor pencils(?) pastel color stick (or makeup brush-ish)
Dry color vs wet color differences? I never Splatoon or Mario paint so I can only Urushi-e guess from Hokusai.
Return of the Four Lords
the ink kraken that we fight is not Ultros covered in ink, nope not at all
a sneaky reference to Ookami pops in because is Orthard after all.
Alternate dual wield brush and palette version
Dual stance - Little brush and palette switch to big brush equipment pending
Uhhh... Leofard's Granddad is one of the job quest people?
Can you paint with all the colors of the wind~~~~~` Is a dynamis job emotions given form
The totally totally off grid guess that it combines Geomancer because of sealing talismen (draw boulders, splash water, cast wind, throw flame)
Van Gogh, fellow servant from FGO also fights with gaint brush too
Hokusai is the Relm we have all along!!!! Quarterstaff -brush WANTS!!! There should be another fighting game character that fights with a brush (not exactly Ookami) but Hokusai is the most recent one in my memory because I'm playing the game currently
Dang it Exarch!!! Summon Hokusai!!!
FGO mobile version for Foreigner Hokusai fighting style
Arcade fighting game version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p5kROCRjLc
The earlier one that I can't remember Samurai showdown - Morozumi Taizan.
No I didn't forget, she isn't in my stable of servants. But Van Gogh(long story), who is a little less fancy but brighter paintwise than Hokusai
I haven't played Splatoon so I can't comment.
--------------
Post reveal - Leonardo is the dual blade viper combined to become quarterstaff Donatello. the fusion is unexpected since FFIX memories fuzzy. but the Zidane!! - Painting Pictomancer palette version bigger brush - a Relm referenced

also this description.. Y'know, why do we only have to fight atrocities in there? Where is the secret sections where you can fight the legendary figures of the time?
Do you know how much I'd love to have a 1 v 1 showdown with amped legend Venessa, the KoF founder while she shows me what the true meaning of hell is itself? How about some of the Adepti in their hey day? The high ranking youkai or heavensent samurai from the old Inazuma days?
Oh the possibilities.. and the fun character developments depending who is facing what.

Please give us some of your headcannons, all your posts are amazing!!!!
Just some random misc. Xiaolin Showdown headcanons?
Omi and Chase both have a huge sweet tooth, but most of the fallen warriors don’t share that trait, especially to the extent that Omi and Chase do. Some of them prefer heartier things, some just dislike less saccharine tastes in general. The warrior who comes closest is the Samurai.
Chase gushes about Omi to the warriors whenever he’s not gushing about them to Wuya, and the warriors have each come to have varying levels of interests in Omi, and some have almost as much of a soft spot for Omi as Chase does himself.
Guan comes from a military family back in the day, and designed his signature weapon himself.
Omi is multilingual and can speak all of his friends’ native languages and then some, but he’s got that same formality and clumsiness in every language he knows. He’s even sort of clumsy when trying to be informal in his mother tongue, because he learned so much from ancient scrolls.
Omi regularly sneaks into Chase’s lair just to hang out sometimes on days when there are no missions or Shen Gong Wu. He’s the only person Chase would happily allow to do that.
Kimiko’s best friend Keiko loves making clothes and accessories, and that she's the one who makes most of Kimiko's outfits. She dresses pretty plainly herself, but she's a master seamstress, and she and Kimiko still design outfits together even now that they’re far apart. She loves taking photos and videos of Kimiko modeling her newest outfits. Growing up, they started with making outfits for their dolls and playing with their hairstyles, sometimes with pretty tacky results, but they grew into their fashion skills pretty well. Kimiko’s dad bought Kimiko lots of toys, but his style in clothes for her has always been too traditional for Kimiko’s taste, so most of Kimiko’s clothes come from Keiko.
Keiko is big into the occult and legends (some of which of been directly influenced by Dashi’s travels in Japan, unbeknownst to them), so while some other kids were very offput and scared of Kimiko after her first fiery outburst, Keiko thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Keiko works as a miko part-time, although she and Kimiko agree that the outfit is a bit too plain and traditional for their tastes.
Keiko and Kimiko were each other’s first kiss, back in grade school.
Clay refers to his mother as “Momma Bailey”. She’s hard-working and headstrong, a great cook and an even better shot. They’d worked together as farmhands on her daddy’s farm and alternated between flirting and butting heads. The family farm was inherited from her side of the family. She and Daddy Bailey had a literal shotgun wedding once they could out she was pregnant with Clay. They’re still married, but they separated after Jesse ran away from home when she learned Clay was accepted into “monk school”.
Clay was very bookish and nerdy in school. Even though all the sports teams were dying to recruit him, he would have been more inclined to join the chess club. It was a moot point though, since Clay had too many responsibilities at home to ever have time for a club. Jesse wasn’t as good at Clay in classes or with sports, and it bothered her being compared to him both at home and at school when her big brother always seemed so perfect to her.
Jesse became the leader of the Black Vipers by beating them all 1-v-3 in hand-to-hand combat. They had a tendency of running off new people who took control of them this way because despite that being their rule, that doesn’t endear them to their new leader in any way. But Jesse has personally earned a lot of respect and comradery with the girls.
Jesse and Belle are very obviously crushing on each other, but neither has come out and said it yet. They have even kissed once in the heat of the moment, but both are still somehow in that will-they-or-won’t-they phase.
Raimundo trained in capoeira back home. He comes from a big family and a lot of siblings, and he’s somewhere in the middle, with a lot of younger siblings to look after and a lot of older siblings to look after him. He’s not used to having his own space, so his cubby at the temple is more personal space than he’s used to not having to share, but he’s also used to a lot of fun hustle and bustle, a lot of stuff to keep him occupied, and so many siblings that were just as big troublemakers and pranksters as him that they could often get away with pulling stuff and no one knowing which of them was a fault, which got him out of having to deal with a lot of culpability or punishment. A few of his siblings are already working adults and he even has a few very young nephews and nieces already, but they all still live together or at least in close contact.

Console Fighting Games of 2003 - Samurai Showdown V
Four years after the most recent release and seven years after the release of Samurai Showdown IV a new entry in the series was release. Samurai Showdown V is a prequel with the game set before the events of the very first Samurai Showdown, hence why the Japanese title サムライスピリッツ零 translates to Samurai Shodown Zero.
Samurai Showdown V is the first entry in the series to be developed by Yuki Enterprise after they acquired the Samurai Showdown IP. Prior to this Yuki Enterprise was known for Strategy games like Master Chess, Ultimate Mind Games and Jarinko Chie The Hanafuda.
Samurai Showdown V debuted in Arcades in 2003, as with other main-line entries in the series it would release on the Neo Geo, again in 2003. A PlayStation 2 release would follow in 2004, with a port to the Xbox happening in 2006. The game would later be ported to the PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows App store as well as Android and iOS.

Game 13: Samurai Shodown V Special
It's hard to pin down what makes V Special better than it's original counterpart. There is a lot of stages cut, a few characters cut, but ultimately everything here feels fresher or brighter or simply more alive than it's previous counterpart. What it lacks from the original Shodown V, it effectively delivers in smoother gameplay, and a slightly more interesting arcade experience. The difference between the two games even shows up at the very beginning and ending of their respective games. With the character selection screen being more interesting, and a far more engaging credits compared to a simply rolling of names. This all kinda accumulates to a better time playing this version of V compared to the original.
Arcade mode has effectively gutted out the story mode for these characters, but it replaced it with an interesting alternative which is effectively a boss rush of the past boss characters if you get the right requirements. Each match's speed and character balance also helps make for not only an easier time during arcade mode, but also makes it feel like a more enjoyable, well paced ride. Each character has something to use and options to play with on top of a bunch of mechanics and attacks that are able to decisively end the match. V Special basically just gives each character / player enough options to make it feel like a hard earned victory without other characters feeling overpowered or wasting each others time. If you failed to make the right moves and used the wrong power than you are punished for it properly. While I can't say this is an exclusive feeling in Samurai Shodown, V Special certainly makes it feel far easier to use these optional power ups compared to the rest of the series.
Basically Samurai Shodown V Special is just a polished product compared to it's original counterpart. It's odd in the sense that on paper the original certainly seems better. More characters and stages traditionally make for a better game, but with the way the changes V Special makes it out to be the better experience. V Special's roster, the balancing of characters, and the more vibrant stages it has; gives off a product that is better than the originals newly added dull stages and unbalanced character additions. Their certainly is enough reason to look at Samurai Shodown V, but V Special simply outshines it in ways that matter more to a fighting game audience.

Favorite fighting game, and their play style?
I didn't do their play styles because I don't think I'm familiar enough with fighting games in general to make a list. Honestly, I may have played smash bros ONCE in my entire life and that's it for my fighting game knowledge.
Also, some people don't classify Arms or Punch out as "fighting" games, but according to this wikipedia article, they're on the list!
-
Xemnas - Injustice
Xigbar - Mortal Kombat
Xaldin - Street Fighter
Vexen - Marvel v. Capcom
Lexaeus - Tekken
Zexion - Soulcalibur
Saix - Fatal Fury
Axel - Samurai Showdown
Demyx - Arms
Luxord - Capcom v. SNK
Marluxia - Punch-Out
Larxene - The King of Fighters
Roxas - Super Smash Bros.
Xion - Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Games Played in 2021
It’s that time of year again! A list of every game I bought, beat, or just played in 2021! When I’m writing this exact sentence I just beat what I’m fairly certain will be my last game of the year. So now’s as good a time as any to show off a recap of what I’ve been playing!
I’m actually a little embarrassed by how much I bought this year. But hey! It’s been a tough year for me and I am a tax paying citizen! I’ll spend embarrassing amounts of money on whatever I want. List is under the read-more :)
On this list I included games I got that were presents from people which are marked as “Present”, as well as gifts I bought for others that I can still play myself (which means I bought them for a family member lol) which I marked as “Gift”. And I included games that I got for free, marked as “Free” of course. If it’s a game I bought for someone else but I can’t actually play (like, for example, a steam game) I booted it from a list. This isn’t a list to show how charitable and sexy I am it’s so show what I bought that I can actually play.
As for the “played this year” section, I only included games I played for the first time this year or had the intention of beating this year. So I won’t be including something like Smash, which I played this year, but I’ve been playing for years now. I also tried to make games I know released this year bold but I didn’t do any real research because I’m lazy.

Hoo, god DAMN that’s a lot of stuff. I’m pretty sure it’s missing things or there’s tons of repeats. It’s a sloppy list but honestly I don’t care. I’m putting myself in a vulnerable spot by showing you how irresponsible I am at spending money, so you’ll forgive me if the list is a little messy.
With getting tons of commissions for games, my friends being WAY too generous all year round, having a gaming computer for a full year for the first time ever, and also discovering game pass (which I’m not a certified shill for) I was able to play an INSANE amount of stuff this year. And I really want to thank everyone who helped contribute to this list in one way or another. IT’S YOUR FAULT!
No but seriously, I love playing games and I wanna play a bunch next year too. Hopefully by then I’ll have a better idea on how to organize these lists (or I’ll just become too embarrassed to post them. I’m honestly questioning if I should post this as we speak.) So here’s to hoping 2022 is also filled with tons of games and some much deserved good times. Have a safe new years, everyone!
