I can't tell you how much it means to have ppl who look like you in movies. And I'm just some white bitch who got made fun of for her looks as a kid. It's an even bigger deal to WOC and other minorities. I'm sick of seeing the same face repeated over and over for female characters.

I am so here for gap-toothed, broad nosed Gwen. 😭 13yr old me would have been obssessed. Wait... actually 25yr old me is also obssessed. I basically went home after my first viewing and started ordering materials for a cosplay...

one of the millions of things i liked about spider-verse was that not only did all the female characters look different from each other, they gave mary jane her classic dimples and square chin, which might not seem like a big deal but you’d be surprised how much tiny details like those can make women in comic books look distinct

ok but i think the thing that bugs me most about disney’s same-face syndrome is that it’s NOT because the artists are lazy. like

the sheer amount of face and body design in this screenshot from Tangled? INCREDIBLE. i am in AWE. it’s so fun to look at, i want to know the stories of each of these people because i believe! they are actual! people!! the amount of creativity in this one screenshot is downright contagious!

and it’s the same with Frozen, like

the design style of these people is a bit different from Tangled, and I’m not sure if that’s meant to denote a different geographical area or if it’s just a matter of different artists being involved, but still: you can clearly see the variety of faces in these shots. i’d even say there’s MORE variation in background female characters than male ones.

which means that THIS

is NOT a symptom of incompetence. and it’s not a sign of lazy design work. it’s a CHOICE.

and that shouldn’t be a surprise! that’s what disney DOES, these days; it finds a niche that makes some cash and pumps it until it runs dry. it owns the entertainment industry. it can afford to be tasteless and formulaic. it doesn’t HAVE any competitors to keep it honest.

but it drives me absolutely MAD to realize that the thing disney sees as a primary moneymaking asset, enough to impose THIS level of sameness for as long as they can get away with it, is the appearance of its female leads. It’s the face of their main character.

Because it works. This design is nonthreatening, attractive, and perfectly appealing to all audiences, children and adults alike. It’s white, and pretty, and thin, and young. it’s what we’re used to looking at, even as it catches the eye.

It’s a perfect face.

It’s a face that sells tickets, and a figure that sells toys.

They could create new characters with their own faces, but why would they? This face, this character, this body makes them money. They find actresses for live-action remakes that match the mold of thin-sweet-pretty as closely as they can, and filter out the rest.

They’ve bought out their competitors, and it’s not like they’re accountable to their audiences. There’s nowhere to go but Disney, these days.

They’ve found something low-effort and high-profit, and there’s nothing anyone can do that will make them let it go.

Why would they ever change this perfect face?

✏️Character Studies✏️ Okay so epic moment when I'm in a mall waiting for my mom . [INCOMING ESSAY ABT SAME FACE SYNDROME] . The little note on the top corner explains what this is for. I divided it to cute/childish round characters and characters with a more elongated face structure . I wanted to do practice more of these studies because it helps a lot when practicing variety in character faces and shapes. A problem about my old art is same face syndrome , where there is little to no change in majority of the characters (maybe eye shape or face shape from time to time but that's it) . Normally in cases like these, the easy way to identify characters with the same faces is through their colors and clothing (e.x. some anime do this, thats why there is more emphasis on clothing). Although in some cases, the reason for this does make sense (ex.for merchendise or cartoons because of the fast rate of production), I do believe that variety is good to add into practice as it gives more spice to an art piece . The artwork here is a play on shape language (mostly on the rounder side) . Circle=cute, childish, Square=sturdy and strong, triangle=stern and danger. This can be mixed together to make even more types. HOWEVER, with that being said,just because you use shape variety doesn't mean that you can be completely out of same face syndrome. All of the round characters could look the same, all of the triangular characters could look the same. Which is why I attempted to draw diffrentiatable characters within the same shape.
