Dagur: remember, when we take out the dragon riders, Hiccup is mine, get it? you can have the dragons, but Hiccup is MINE. as in, only I can have him. no one else touches him. do you understand?
Viggo: yes, I understand
Dagur: good. just wanted to make that very clear. I don't like sharing.
Viggo: you can rest easy, Dagur. the dragons are all I am in interested in
~ later ~
Hiccup: hey
Viggo:
Viggo: say, Dagur, would it be too late to renegotiate?

For your entertainment:
Hiccup: *trying to get stuff done at his workbench*
Dagur: *dramatically lays his head on Hiccup's shoulder*
Hiccup (clearly annoyed): ....Hello, Dagur
Dagur (moping): Heeeey Hiccup
Hiccup:....
Dagur: What'cha up to?
Hiccup: I'm trying to make improvements on Toothless' tail.
Dagur: Oh? That's cool.
Hiccup:...
Dagur:...
Hiccup: *sighs* How about you Dagur?
Dagur: Oh nothing, I've just been waiting all day for my boyfriend to pay attention to me.
Hiccup: Oh gods.
Dagur: But hey, it's okay, I guess a tail is more interesting than me.
Hiccup: *shakes his head* You're impossible.
Dagur: *pouts*
Hiccup (finally breaking a smile): Hey! Don't try to distract me with those sad puppy dog eyes!
Dagur: *perks up* I have sad puppy dog eyes?
Hiccup: *realizes that he's given Dagur a new weapon for his arsenal*

Politely Rude
Tumblr media
Dagur is someone I would consider politely rude, as the title indicates. This probably sounds strange and I'd concur, but I still think it's true.
Dagur has traditional manners. He even tells Shattermaster to show good manners after he's fed rocks. He says please and thank you both as a good guy and a villain. (Examples being when he thanked Hiccup for agreeing to help him train a dragon and asked Ryker to please just listen to his ideas for the Hunters.)
The chief dislikes poor table manners like smacking. We've even seen him eat in "Gone, Gustav, Gone" where he did so with a fork and knife.
Yet, Dagur will also do the rudest things😂. He's called the Outcasts a band of rejects, snuck onto the Edge and rummaged through Hiccup's things, etc. In this very gif, he'll ask Hiccup to be his best man and then proceed to almost force him to agree.
Tumblr media
This one too. There's someone else in this scene: Savage. The reason you can't see him is because he fell after Dagur half-choked/half-tossed him. He's also why Dagur goes upwards randomly. He steps on him🤣. Just no respect.
I feel like Dagur knows how to be polite and does definitely try to be more when he's good, but there's a combination of not caring about certain rude moments and not knowing that he's being impolite. For instance, in the same episode when he wanted Shattermaster to be a grateful dragon, he compared Hiccup to tiny and "wimpy" Hunter. He did something similar when they were kids too, stopping himself before he got through the entire insult because Hiccup "know(s) what (he is)." So, sometimes, he's definitely trying to get under someone's skin. Other times, I really believe that he just says stuff and has no clue it could be interpreted as offensive (or he realizes it after it's already come out his mouth).

I take the whole "pretending dragons are still enemies" thing when Dagur visited Berk for the peace trade didn't really happen then?
It did! As much as Minicup loves Dagur, he knows it would probably be a Bad Thing if he knew about Berk's flock. Twinsanity happens as usual, with the slight change that Minicup is a lot better at keeping Dagur distracted than Stoick, Elder and Gobber are. Minicup has a lot of dragon facts and funny stories about the Pirate Training Program to go around.

If I had a nickel for every time I fell in love with an animated tv show that was a spin off from a popular movie franchise, whose protagonist was a dorky slightly shaggy boy who was a genius mechanic/inventor and also that universe's equivalent of a horse girl, who was in love with a strong independent female with a love for weapons (who he'd had a crush on since he was a young teenager, and who found him annoying for the first part of their relationship) and had a team that he considered family, most of the plot switched between said family adventuring and helping people, and our protag being obsessed over by a deranged man with all of his screws loose, that simultaneously loved and hated the protag, had tattoos on his face and a red and black color scheme, and other than the deranged man, our main villain was a genius obsessed with the art of war, seeing it as a game to be played with our main cast, the show had several big villains and events that were never quite resolved because they got resolved in the movies, throughout the show we get to see our protagonist evolve from an unsure adolescent to a confident selfless leader, and the show does a great job of adding to the worldbuilding and expanding the already established universe of the franchise, and although it was technically a children's show, it managed to have very mature and complex storylines and themes, while also not taking itself very seriously and giving us a nice balance of fanservice and witty humor.
I'd only have two nickels

but it is weird that it happened twice.

Hmmm, having a realization that all the ocs I remember are taller than the love interest to some degree. Or! Just straight up might be the same fuckin height but is stronger than the love interest. This is a realization I’m not complaining about. I’m just putting my realization out there though for you nerds to see.

...With Children
(RTTE spoilers) Here are my headcanons for Dagur and Mala as parents because you know they're having a minimum of 2 kids assuming everything is okay health wise. They just seem very...romantic as a couple.
I think they'd be great parents! Even though they don't always agree on the best rearing techniques (Mala thinks balancing on stones near lava is good and Dagur wants them to spend more time throwing knives), they stay a united front with the kiddos around. Then, they can disagree afterwards so that the kids aren't receiving mixed messages. They're a team in raising the little ones just like they're a team with leading their kingdoms.
In the same vein, I don't think they fit into the "one is a fun parent. One is a tough parent" stereotype. If the kids mess up stuff around the hut, they know Momma Mala's not going to be happy with them. If they do something insanely reckless that puts them in danger, they know Daddy Dagur's going to be livid. (Also, I just realized that they can have alliteration with their names and I love them as parents even more because of that.)
I think that in the lighter times when one parent disagrees, whichever one it is can win over the other. If Mala and the kids want to go out to find new dragons to heal, Dagur isn't going to be able to say no to them. Similarly, Mala will see their matching 🥺s and give in on whatever idea they want to try out.
Overall, I see them as a really happy family that distributes the work of leadership and parenthood pretty evenly.
(p.s. title is a reference for any Married...with Children fans out there. Genuinely not sure if any exist on this platform, but hi if you do!)

i'm rewatching the night and the fury because it's one of my favorite dagur-related episodes, and,
Tumblr media
the look on dagur's face when he declares hiccup his enemy and hiccup accepts it without hesitation, lowkey hurts me.
i mean
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
his expression changes from anger to surprise to upset.
it makes me think some part of dagur was hoping for hiccup to object to it, to say they were still brothers or something like that, and that it pained him to hear hiccup didn't actually care.
dagur made such a big deal out of them being brothers, and I think he expected hiccup to feel the same, which probably made the "betrayal" worse for him, fueling his anger and need for revenge. in his eyes, hiccup didn't even fight for their brotherhood, picking a dragon over him with no hesitation, and it enraged him.

Hi! I was wondering if there's any piece of HTTYD media where dragons are actually loyal to someone who is a bad person? In all of the three movies it seems they forced to do evil, but is there a villain who actually cares about their dragon?
This is such an interesting question!
The only one I can think of right now is Viggo and the Skrill from RTTE, but his relationship with that dragon was definitely at the peak of his redemption. Viggo had to shed a lot of his previous notions about dragons to be able to form his bond with the Skrill, so I wouldn't necessarily count him a "bad person" at that point. He's still not good, but he's not as bad as when we first meet him.
The same goes for Dagur and his dragons: Dagur bonding with Shattermaster is a significant step in his shift from an antagonist to an ally to Hiccup and co. Any villain who ends up befriending a dragon ceases to be a villain and becomes an ally in one way or another.
You could argue that Drago's Bewilderbeast was loyal to him, but Drago definitely didn't care for it. I've seen some theories that the metal staff he had was used to "discipline" the Bewilderbeast when it was still young enough for it to be effective, and it only listens to Drago because it fears him as a consequence. I would count that as "a dragon loyal to their villain", but it's definitely dark.
A running theme in HTTYD is that the villains are villains because they very explicitly do not care for dragons. Which is an interesting theme in itself, but I do like the idea of a HTTYD villain subverting expectations by having a good bond with their dragon(s), but still choosing to do bad things for whatever reason. The two things are entirely unrelated, they're just someone who has a deep and profound respect for dragons but also likes to do evil messed up things. As like, a hobby.
