about. 2000s quirkless au with grunge! dabi. female reader. messy fluff headcanons all over the place. wc of 1300+

notes. inspired by @bloodabi's 90s au w goth dabi. the fact that i always hc dabi as a grunge kid and scrolled through tumblr for hours js to find one but i only found one and he's goth (EVEN BETTER) so here's a grunge version! part two.

2000s au with dabi as the weird grunge kid that everyone is scared of except for the kind and 'sort of' popular fashionable girl. like, dabi is a popular loner, known for his intimidating personality and a bad history he had with one of the elder seniors (he beat a dude who called him a disintegrated crispy freak once bc of his skin condition)

nobody talks to him. nobody even dares to look at his way. but does dabi care? no. he has music and his life to continue if he wants to be a successful musician in the future.

he calls everyone else lowlife rats— except you, one of the heavenly angels of the school, a natural beauty. the exact polar opposite of the grunge boy. what would he do when you received a note in your locker and the first person you approached was him?

what's even more intriguing to you is that the weird scary grunge kid of the school has written “you look like sonne's sample of the female vocals.” mind you, anyone can recognise his horrible handwriting anywhere.

this is truly a rare and interesting compliment coming from the dabi himself. so when you approached dabi about it, he flushed red and didn't know exactly how to react or reply, only fiddling with his rather punkish looking belt in nervousness.

his love expert sister, fuyumi, told him that if he ever likes someone, he should compliment them. that's what he was doing, but fuyumi never told him what to do next.

dabi really thought you were going to call him disgusting or weird for leaving such a horrible note in your locker and that you'd tell him to leave you alone forever. little did the grunge todoroki know that you said you love the song and it made your heart flutter that the intimidating dabi just gave you the best compliment that will be stuck in your soul forever.

from then onwards you started to talk to dabi in secret during school recesses. and since he insisted that he didn't want to be seen talking to people— talking to you, one of the prettiest girls in school. that includes exchanging emails and facebook accounts.

you still remember the day when you first went out on a date with him at the local mall where dabi always hangs out with his friend shigaraki from another school. the two of you went into hot topic and bought a bunch of matching stuff, including really cute punk mushroom keychains.

how cute, a hot topic date with dabi that ended with hours of endless karaoke just blasting rock songs together. dabi honestly didn't expect that you would listen to the same music as he does, but when he does, he just falls in love with you even more.

hot topic isn't only the place where you hang out with him. you bring him to a bunch of designer stores and talk about fashion all the time there. dabi doesn't mind it though, in fact, he loveeesss listening to you talk endlessly about fashion. he even offered to be your model if you ever designed something!

he's so clingy after the both of you started dating. of course, in private. during friday or saturday nights when your parents are out and you are left home alone, dabi would come over and tell you the coolest stories of his life.

did you know dabi is in an underground band as a drummer?! he brought over some videotapes of his band recordings and you both watched it together at your small television. yk what's even better? one day he hands you a special ticket to one of his concerts downtown that's happening in a few weeks. you practically jumped on him for the free ticket. of course you're going to watch your cool boyfriend's concert!

those long nights, dabi opens up to you a lot when it's bedtime as you're both on the couch, your head resting on his shoulder and his head above yours. he tells you he isn't actually called “dabi” but he's actually touya. touya todoroki. dabi is just a nickname that the world calls him by. to put simply, a stage name.

he said he didn't like being called touya, but when he heard touya slipped down your tongue, his mind changed immediately. he wanted you to continue calling him touya. it sounded like a heavenly call if you said his name. he liked it so much that touya said only you can call him by touya, besides his family members.

regardless of dabi or touya, you still love him. you know he is somewhat insecure about his scars, so you make sure to always pepper his skin with gentle and loving kisses. even the ones on his back.

you'd take his shirt off and kiss his scarred back before applying baby lotion to ease the irritation. touya never fails to feel like a shy little child when you always kiss his scars. your favourite place to kiss him is obvi under his eyes and his scarred lips <33

what a clingy teenage boy touya is. all he does is stay by your side, never wanting to leave you alone for he fears something might happen to you if he isn't looking. touya would poke your shoulders as you do your homework at his house, telling you to pay attention to him.

don't get me wrong, touya is smart, he finishes all his homeworks in school so he could practice with his bandmates until evening, but he will not let you do your homework if you don't let him play with your hair or let him at least hug you somewhere.

speaking of his bandmates, he brings you to his band practices a lot! his band is so cool and welcoming that you almost feel like this little community is the main source of touya’s happiness. it was like you could feel that this band is.. home.

when touya performed on stage, you couldn't help but unleash your inner fangirl on your own boyfriend. as if you aren't already a fan of him when you first set your sights on him in the school canteen with his wired earphones and lightly bopping his head back and forth at the beat of the song.

he looked cool, honestly. your type in edgy men is literally sitting just a few tables away from you. how could you not take your eyes off of him?

you're honestly such a loser for touya despite him being the loser. the people at your school just couldn't see how amazing touya todoroki is outside of school. you're such a lucky girl that touya gets to kiss your cheeks daily, gets to add his songs into your ipod, gets to go on hot topic dates with him. and most importantly, you get to be with touya for life.

what's different now that you're married? nothing changed at all. except, touya is so popular now as a world-class drummer and you as a popular fashion designer. specifically, you have your own brand and you specifically design clothes for your husband and his bandmates. their band is your main sponsor.

soon, you're going to attend a rammstein concert as your anniversary with touya giving you his first love letter. rammstein will be streaming sonne, and touya twisted and turned some knots so that the concert experience is at the level of 100% for you.

you melt at your husband’s words before a smile crept up your cheeks. “aweee touya baby, time to have kids!”

Lance and Hunk work at a library and like to people watch, guessing what genres they like to read. a grunge/punk guy with the worst RBF walks in and they’re really surprised to see he’s checking out classic romance literature.

idk something with public transportation? like they take the same train/bus/subway every day but they never actually talk— just eyes that meet occasionally and a polite smile but nothing more. until one day, the other guy just.. stops showing up? and Lance is pretty bummed but what can he do? (and then he sees a familiar mop of black hair at the grocery store or a café or something and is like “!! it’s you!!”)

The trio go out to see the next installment of their favorite movie series, but Lance keeps sneaking out of the theater to buy more snacks (and definitely not to talk to the hot guy running the concession stand)

Keith works at a convenience store/gas station and this tall, beautiful man comes in occasionally, but no matter what he buys, he always always always gets a bag of candy that just so happens to be Keith’s favorite too— he always has a bag at his station so he can snack on it throughout his shift. One day, the man is in line without the candy and he honestly looks like shit— he’s definitely not his usual, happy self. Keith asks about the candy. The man replies, “Oh, i couldn’t find any today... You guys must be out.” So Keith gives him a bag from his stash. “You look like you need it more than me.”

Lance goes to the campus library to check out books for his literature class, but every single time, without fail, someone else has taken the last copy. “What do you mean someone else checked out the last copy?? Who??” “That guy.” *insert Keith* (it would be funnier if Keith isn’t even reading them for class, he’s just reading classic literature for funsies)

Lance checks out a novel from the library and there’s an envelope inside with a name written neatly on the front of it. it looks like it’s important so he resolves to find and return the envelope to K. Kogane, whoever that is (another library one?? yeah sorry idc i love public libraries and books and love stories . sue me.)

Keith is a barber/hairdresser and Lance’s regular stylist isn’t available so he’s stuck with Keith -OR- Lance takes his nephew to get his hair cut and Keith looks kinda scary but he’s actually?? really good with kids?? (insert mullet joke here)

Keith meets Pidge’s friends from a different class. Keith is super into Pidge’s hot, tall friend but is discouraged from acting on it because he’s constantly glued to Hunk’s side and making comments like “this is why I love you, Hunky” and (wrongfully) assumes they’re dating (but Lance is just that kind of guy! yk! he says “ily” to his friends all the time!)

bartender Keith is so good but think abt bartender Lance……… yeah….. need i say more??

Havik Head canons from someone who hasn't played MK1 yet.

When Havik gives kisses, he's just nipping whatever part of your face he's *kissing* with this teeth.

Prefers an autumn color pallet, takes a lot of comfort in warm tones.

Prefers silvers, learned it's a metal that tends to represent working and lower class citizens on earth and liked that symbolism.

Trophies luxuries he's found from the oppressors he's killed/conquered, sometimes gifts those same luxuries to his own people after modifying them, so that they aren't caught with those goods and falsely accused.

He approached the concept of Anarchy and non-hierarchical governments with sincerity at some point but became desperate as his protests continuously failed under Seido's oppression and ruthless militaristic responses to it. At the expense of many protestors lives and his own experiences, any concept of government began to prove untrustworthy.

Some of the reason he clings to chaos has more to do with being berated by the oppressors, trying to incite division within his protest by falsely titling him as a zealot. Havik became disillusioned with his effort to persevere over the oppressors cruelty, and just decided to become the thing he was always painted to be in the media. Leaning into chaos as a method of combat incited the fear in his oppressor that he needed to make them buckle and made his protest methods ruthlessly unpredictable. it very quickly became more difficult for Seido's Leaders to take advantage of what arguable few followers he has left because of this change, Seido's Leaders could no longer bank on Havik's empathy for his own people or whatever sympathy he had for those unknowingly benefitting from the oppressive system...

Johnny tried to be buddies with Havik at some point and sent him an earth realm, punk playlist on cassette w/ a walkman. Granted, as a celebrity, Johnny only really understands punk at a surface level, so the punk rock he sends Havik tends to be old school and quite popular, with titles like Iggy pop, stooges and rancid. One could even say some artists he shared weren't technically punk, regardless, Havik loves listening to it. Johnny chose to send Havik a cassette player for aesthetic reasons, but also bc he's introducing outworld Kombatants to earth realm technology in little bits at a time.

Havik has broken, picked at, ripped and shredded pieces of himself off and re-healed it over again to get certain scars to look more aesthetically pleasing to himself. He sees his self mutilation as a form of expression, in the same way some one might dye their hair or pierce their nose.

Loves grunge punk and denim jeans.

He breaks his bones at the joints alot trying to crack them bc he always has the feeling of needing to crack his joints but they just won't.

Breath smells bad bc he doesn't brush his tongue when he cleans his teeth. Also just heals his cavities.

Prefers candle light and sunlight to overheads.

i. may have asked this before (if i did i absolutely forgot) BUT do you have voiceclaims for any of your ocs' normal and/or singing voices ??

you havent i dont think!! it is a good question and one i think about a lot.. a difficult one for me to answer with 'they DEFINITELY sound like this' bcuz my brain has a hard time attaching itself to particular voices for my characters, and wanting them to have trans va's etc. so these r mostly like approximations or ideas!

im not including every oc here just like, major ones for me, or ones who i have an idea of what their voices sound like better

blue: so what i know for him he has a masculine voice, something that can get screamy, but hes technically skilled enough as a vocalist to pull off a ballad no problem (this is not uncommon for rock vocalists). one thing i want from him is sounding similar between talking or singing, you can tell its the same guy. ive always had trouble finding a fitting voice for him.. i associate nightlife with him in some ways i think bcuz hansel romero has a very clear voice, and i could see smth like a foreign affair being.. adjacent-ish for him (u can see how much i struggle to find smth truly fitting for him). neither of these bands rly play the exact kinda rock music i think he sings tho so yknow, grain of salt here. kid me thought he sounded like dane cook. for better or for worse i cant rly like.. disagree with that lol. i also used 2 think he should have a grungier voice but thats kinda changed w time lol he looks more like he could pass as a member of a boy band nowadays

first we have mike:

i was thinking abt taking these and maybe making the pants a bit more fun w patches or patterns but keeping it pretty similar to the refs otherwise. tho w that last one the outfit just feels SO mike to me,, bookbag included, i would keep it p much the same as the ref

now for will:

i will b honest it was significantly harder to find good refs that i think have the right vibes but i like these ones a lot. maybe w/o the tie tho? at least w the last one. but then again thats where ur opinion would come in 2 help guide me lol. it definitely gives influenced by jonathan vibes w the first one, like hes a bit more grunge than canon and i think that tracks personally but i also think he would definitely keep that bright colour palette that he has most of the time so i would throw in some bright striped shirts and the like.

sorry if this is weird and out of the blue but u got me thinking and i ended up scrolling thru pinterest for probably a good 30-45 minutes afterwards

ok, so for mike i really like that style of shirt!! colorwise, i tend to stick to things he wore in S1 but in an edgier style. i can’t add images but he wears emerald greens, reds that are like a shade lighter than what you’d imagine for a typical dark red, deep navys, even some dampened yellows against black or white. although i can see him experimenting with brighter things, my analysis brain forces me to face the fact that mike wearing bright colors is a major indication that he’s not being himself. brightness seems to be something he associates with normalcy, but he’s still expressive with his darker color palette. in s2, he’s heavy on hiding himself under jackets, and we know he was dealing with intense survivor’s guilt and depression

basically, for mike, i like the fits but i’d suggest going for a darker palette if you’re going for accurate characterization and, exactly as you said, throwing in some punk elements

as for will, i struggled SO much with trying to figure out the style i wanted for him. on one hand, will has a history with wearing tighter fitting clothes over the past two seasons and generally wearing very form fitting things and i feel like that fits really well with denim skirts but i also had a few concepts for looser, longer skirts because i think of his will the wise costume which is very loose and, although it isnt swishy, it gives him room to make that effect.

i think, if will were to get to the place where he confidently wears skirts, he’d wear more stylized things reminiscent of his outfits in s3 and the first two outfits from s4. long skirts with artistic patterns he admired that he can swoosh around or shorter skirts that fit his form well are where i generally find myself thinking because skirts have so much more potential as an art form than men’s pants and shorts at the time did, at least regarding things he could wear casually.

in general, i don’t see will wearing a whole lot of baggy stuff if he has a choice. he wore loose stuff a lot in the first two seasons, though i imagine that was moreso a result of wearing jonathan’s old stuff and being kinda scrawny. in s3, the stuff he’s wearing most likely isn’t jonathan’s, even more so in s4 because we know the byers have the money for will to pick out his own clothes. even the jacket he wears in the st experience is more tightly fit

and, with will, he does definitely seem to lean int brighter colors a little bit more. not neon by any means, but definitely more eye catching than mike and his more muted colors still lean towards brightness. honestly, i dont think we ever see will choosing to wear anything particularly dark, maybe a little in s2, but that was also the Horrors Season so.

will is always tough for me because i havent studied him like i’ve studied mike, but my rule of thumb is form fitting and lighter/brighter colors unless you’re intentionally trying to break him out of that typical zone and explore new possibilities with his character

obviously that’s just how i perceive the both of them, but if you think those outfits fuck then draw them For Sure. never too much gnc byler in the world

i have kento n his bfs on the brain again. uh oh.

they don’t really have a preference for positions when cuddling, but most of the time kirishima ends up in the middle.

kento is the tallest of the three, and though kirishima and bakugou are basically the same height, technically kiri is the shortest.

they all love to cuddle, but also they all run warm (for kento and bakugou it’s because if their quirks, kiri is just really warm regardless)

they all have pretty different fashion!! kento’s is more of a goth style, bakugou’s is punk, and kiri’s is soft grunge!

kirishima usually drives, bakugou likes to call shotgun, and kento doesn’t mind the back seat. he likes to steal kirishima’s hoodies on long car rides and sleep in them.

they call each other by their hero names teasingly outside of work.

kirishima likes to carry both bakugou and kento at the same time. bro is the embodiment of that one post that’s like “reasons to get strong: to hold my future partner”

oh? there’s only one bed? doesn’t matter, they were probably gonna end up in the same one anyway

if kento or bakugou don’t finish their food, kiri will eat the rest. it isn’t a very common problem, however, since all of them have pretty big appetites.

aight so for years i have said "Kawaii is a punk movement" because of the Ideology behind it, but by this chart, it's a lot closer to grunge. Essentially, Kawaii began as a rebellious move from young japanese girls. i'm summarizing this post and this article but basically in the 1970s schools had to start banning an overly-cutesy way of writing that girls had developed thanks to the fine-writing ability of the mechanical pencil. students would add hearts, stars, and other little shapes to their characters, the same way girls in the states might dot their i's with little hearts. As cute as it was, a lot of teachers found it SUPER illegible, and it got banned. some students were even expelled for continuing to use it!

this cutesy, rounded style of writing, called marui-ji, was picked up by companies and local businesses that thought they might be able to appeal to this side of girls. and honestly, it Did, in a major way.

the thing about being a girl in japan is a lot of them find it very stiffling, especially as they get older. you're expected to grow into a fine, polite young woman, get married, probably get a respectable boring job, and throw away all the childish princesshood of your childhood. choosing to Embrace that cutesy bubble world instead if a form of rebellion against those societal expectations; why SHOULD i become boring just because i'm growing up? what EXACTLY is wrong with being soft and sweet and pink and sparkly? why, PRECISELY, am i "too old" for princesses and tea parties and brightly-colored sweets? it's a mixture of rebelling against japan's strict comformity culture(the nail that sticks out gets the hammer, as they say), and against the larger problem in developed countries of Femininity being looked down on and seen as lesser; by being Kawaii, you are being LOUDLY feminine, in the most childish, standouty way possible. and if that weren't already a bit feminist for you, there's also an appeal against the expectation that femininity must inherently be for the attraction of men. Kawaii, especially subsubcultures within it such as Decora and Lolita, take a LOT of effort; it's a look that very obviously took HOURS to put together, while also being very, VERY obviously not meant to be sexy. not that nobody's ever found a way to fetishize it, but that base concept of dressing up like a princess in a little girl's story book is pretty unsexy, and for a lot of people, that's the point. and of course this appeal of embracing femininity and going against the grain is also MASSIVELY true for boys who engage in kawaii.

it should also be noted that marui-ji was popularizing around the same time that we were seeing the Gyaru subculture("Girly", more of less), which nowadays is largely considered within the same branch as kawaii. we likely wouldn't have kawaii if it weren't for gyaru.

and, as is common for alt subcultures, kawaii also has its appeal within queer communities; i've seen many a trans person, girl boy and enby alike, embrace kawaii because of that rebellious and highly feminine nature. many trans women find it's an excellent way to try and recapture the girlhood they missed out on, while many trans men find it a comfortable enviornment to embrace the girly shit they grew up with and still enjoy while still being seen as A Boy. it's also an easier place to be a boy if you're small and cute, which many trans guys still are in the early stages of their transition. there's also a decent chunk of lesbians to be found, with yuri content often drawing from kawaii culture.

and, just like basically every other alt subculture, it's been commodofied to hell by businesses looking to make a quick buck.

-w-" remember, y'all, making your own decorations with some polymer clay and cheapo hair pins is JUST as cute as the ten pack you found at the mall!! and speaking of, like many of the cultures mentioned up top, Malls are one of the best place for kawaii to thrive, at least in the united states. besides food courts being a great spot for unreserved meetups, the general space of capitalism trying to appeal to as many demographics as its able means that you'll always find a spot you fit in; particularly, shops that mainly appeal to tweens such as Claires and Justice. and hot topic. there is a LOT of kawaii shit at hot topic.

long story short, hyperfeminine subcultures like kawaii, gyaru, barbies and bimbos all have their place at the table of alt subcultures alongside punk, grunge, goths and emos. (wonder what the underlying ideology of scene is meant to be... society sucks so i'm just gonna be me? idk) and if we're defining grunge as "i'm opting out of societal expectations", i would DEFINITELY say that kawaii falls under that line of thinking :3

But I think he’d get it a lot faster than Dick ever would. All you have to do is explain it and his little raisin brain would get it right off the bat.

Hell, he might even join you on that train. The fashion of goblin-core isn’t his style completely but blending in elements to his everyday wear isn’t the hardest thing he’s done.

He really likes the black nail polish and spiky jewelry, but a connection to nature and how that intertwines with city life is what interests him the most.

He might come home with a frog in a tank with all the necessary equipment to take care of it. Might, idk. I don’t know this man he’s unstable-
