On friendship

Someone today said that they don't believe friendships change. That they've never had a friendship become distant or fizzle out. That you were never truly friends to start with if it happens.

I disagree.

I'm no longer friends with the first person I called when my parents were getting divorced, but that doesn't mean she wasn't there for me during some of the worst times in my life.

I'm still close with my best friend from when I was 8 years old. We drifted a bit in high school, finding other friends and other interests, but we grew back together with no love lost.

My best friend moved away when I was 7. We stayed close for many years, but messages between us grew further apart as time went on and it's been years since we last saw each other. When we do meet, we get on like no time has passed, but the distance in between is only filled by two "happy birthday" texts.

Another friend moved when I was fifteen. For years we were as thick as thieves, missing each other like a limb, then suddenly there was nothing. There's the occasional text, a reaction to something posted publicly or a holiday wish, but nothing more. I still miss her sometimes, but sometimes it's how things are.

My two best friends have only known me for 18 months. People think it's been years, that we knew each other when we were running around playgrounds and skinning our knees on gravel.

Friendship grows and changes. It ends and stretches over time and space and snaps and breaks. It doesn't fit into a box. Friends grow apart, sometimes slowly, sometimes so quickly, you don't have time to breathe before it happens. Maybe you come back together. Maybe the whole thing fades into a memory. Maybe you find yourself in the car years later, singing along to Noah Kahan and imagining her smile.

I think it's naive to expect your friendships to stay the same, to treat them like plastic plants that will never change, grow or die. But maybe it's not naivety.

Maybe it's hope.

As you all know, last August I opened a cafe (a.k.a. my cafe themed writing challenge). The response to that was so wonderful and I adored hosting it and reading every single one of your entries, and I'm thinking it's time I host a new one! ♡

This time I decided to rent out a private theater for all of us to sit and have a movie marathon! This writing challenge starts today and closes on March 30th! I will be traveling the last week of March and it would be the perfect time for me to catch up on reading all the entries (since I read & reblog every fic submitted). The masterlist of all entries will be posted sometime in the following days of me returning from my travels! (Just like my last writing challenge, if you see this anytime later or can’t make the deadline do not fret, if anything below inspires you, you are welcome to write and tag me so I can read it and add your submission to the masterlist♡)

who you can write for: all marvel characters are welcome / any fictional sebastian stan or chris evans characters are welcome too (any characters they’ve portrayed based on real life people will not be accepted though!!) I will be expanding this from my last challenge and accepting submissions for characters from Top Gun Maverick & Twisters 2024. (please keep it to x reader fics only!!)

some general guidelines: Below I’ve provided a number of different scenes, quotes, and songs for inspiration ♡ Anyone can use as many as they'd like and even mix and match however you’d like!! If you use any please let me know somewhere in the post! If nothing below inspires you, you can always submit something with inspiration from a scene/dialogue exchange from another movie or tv show, just please let us know where the inspiration came from!! :) here's the catch though -> the scene/dialogue exchange has to come from another movie or tv show that is not from the one the character is originally from. Pride Month Art Challenge Day #11: Sam and Steven from Dynasty

Can I just give major props to the creative team behind Dynasty (2017) to be like “yeah let’s gender swap one of the characters from the original” thus giving us this couple. Granted Steven then gets written off for like 90% of the show but at least they reunite in the end. Curse you great CW cancellation spree, we could’ve gotten another full season of them together again.

Album Review: Darrell Scott - The New Modern Hymns

Hymns need be neither ancient nor religious to speak to the core of one’s humanity. Darrell Scott understands this implicitly and put that understanding to work on New Modern Hymns, a covers album created in 2007, smited and taken out of print in 2013 and, now, resurrected and reissued.

A secular hybrid of gospel-bluegrass music without drums, the new New Modern Hymns opens with a bonus track: Scott’s long-lost redo of Cat Stevens’ “I Wanna Live in a Wigwam.” MIA for two decades, this 2004 recording stands out for its traditional rhythm section and tilt toward rock. But despite its obvious differences from its album mates, “Wigwam” serves as a fine on-ramp to Hymns as Scott originally imagined it and he and Dirk Powell, Sam Bush, Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, Dan Dugmore et. al originally played it.

Plumbing the songbooks and/or discographies of Gordon Lightfoot (“All the Lovely Ladies”), Joni Mitchell (“Urge for Going”), Waylon Jennings (“Out Among the Stars”), Hoyt Axton (“The Devil”) and Paul Simon and Bob Dylan, respectively, on “American Tune” and “I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met),” Scott is as adept at turning the divine human as on Kris Kristofferson’s “Jesus Was a Capricorn,” as he is at making John Hartford’s lament for cool Nashville, “Nobody Eats at Linebaugh’s Anymore,” sound like a chronicle of a crucifixion.

Of course, having the Fisk Jubilee Singers - alongside other guest vocalists including Del McCoury, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Mary Gauthier, John Cowan and others - simplifies the job. Then, there’s Scott’s personal motivation.

“These are lifetime artists who inspired me,” he said, reinforcing what the performances make so clear.

I promised myself that this year would be different. This year, there'd be no anger festering in my chest, nothing to spit out onto a page. This year, I'd just ignore the day, not let it get to me, not acknowledge its significance. It's been two months since I even spoke to him through texts. It's been six since I saw him in person. The only communication has been emails sent with lawyers' approval and the occasional story from my sister.

Fathers' day shouldn't be an issue anymore. Not this year.

But I woke up feeling wrong. It happens often. I feel like an ornament carelessly knocked off a shelf. Like all my pieces shattered across the floor. Like someone tried to pick up the shards, but they couldn't find all the pieces and put me together wrong, leaving me with sharp edges.

I went to work and was surrounded by fathers and daughters. Little girls racing their dads up the stairs and cheering when they beat him. Middle-aged women with their sons, husbands and fathers, celebrating generations of love. And I smiled at them and prayed they wouldn't ask me about my plans, lest they catch their fingers on my sharp edges.

I wished my mother a happy fathers day. I reminded my sister to send him a text. I joked with my friends about not having a father. I smiled and I did my best to seem fine, because if anyone asks me if I'm doing okay, I'm pretty sure I'll shatter. And I don't think I can be fixed this time.
