My boss tried telling someone that it was against policy to discuss salary a few months ago... they have a degree in management and I work for a law firm. Don't underestimate an employer's capacity to pull shady shit. I'm pretty sure the only reason a few of us knew it was illegal was because we saw it on tiktok.
Do Not Let HR do this to you. It is not illegal to talk about wages in the work place. I did and got a 12% raise!

I read your article on salary negotiations/questions during a job interview, but what happens if I'm asked for a salary range before an interview, when I'm sending in my application?
To apply to this job, I have to go through an online portal, and one of the questions they ask during account creation is my ideal salary range. Which. How do I deal with that? Select the range I'm hoping for? Or the one that's the average for the industry?
Another thing is that they only posted an hourly wage, but don't have an annual range?? I tried calculating an annual salary with an online source based on the hourly wage they posted. But not sure how accurate that is.
I don't want to start with too low a salary, and be stuck with that. But I also don't want to be too aggressive and risk them rejecting my application outright before I have a chance for an interview. Any advice on what to do?
Thank you for reading this and answering these questions!
From a confused and frustrated job applicant
My sweet baby angel, you should worry MUCH less about being "too aggressive" in the salary question. It's far more likely that you'll end up being underpaid than that they'll rescind an offer based on your aggressive salary request. Most of the time, if they like you as a candidate, they'll ask to negotiate the salary!
Now, we recommend finding the average salary (check out these links at the end) and choosing something within that range according to your experience. Then just stick a number in. Value yourself. You're worth it, baby.
