Sleepyhead... (1.6k words, M/M)
For Day 8 of @danganronpashipmonths Saioma month. Inspired by the prompt : Sacrifices
Kokichi needs to make sure Shuichi is safe during late night training. And he needs to talk to Shuichi afterwards. And then it doesn't matter if it's one in the morning by the end, and he needs hours to be able to fall asleep. It doesn't matter that the minute Kokichi can actually rest, the morning announcement goes off. Because Shuichi is safe. And Kokichi can sacrifice a little sleep for that.
Or~ Kokichi can't get to sleep, but still tries to look after Shuichi. While they're talking after late-night training, Shuichi catches on to just how exhausted Kokichi really is.
Read on Ao3 or below
Kokichi was tired. That was probably the simplest way to put it without lying. Shuichi had started to train with Kaito, and now Maki, for a few nights. Which meant Kokichi shouldn't have been able to meet up with Shuichi. But Kokichi made it work. He stayed up every night, waiting for Shuichi to finish.
Kokichi wasn't even sure why; all they did was talk. And it was even necessarily about the game, or anything useful. It was whatever had caught one of their interests. Kokichi would happily listen to whatever Shuichi had on his mind. From the most recent trial, to something much simpler. Like Shuichi missing rain, that was the most recent thing they had talked about.
Other times, Shuichi let him ramble about whatever he wanted to. He would properly listen, and he would talk back. Kokichi still lied a lot, of course, but he felt he was doing it for himself - not for image, or self-preservation. He did it because, sometimes, Shuichi would laugh at his lies. They'd make eye contact and smile, in the night. And Kokichi cherished those moments.
He also watched, originally, to make sure Shuichi would be safe. Because there was no way Shuichi could've beat Kaito, if the astronaut had a knife. But Kokichi could beat Kaito, he was fairly confident. The assassin girl he could toootally take. He just didn't feel like it. And he didn't think Shuichi could handle the assassin, cause he was weaker.
Maki didn't seem as much of a threat anymore, she'd even started trauma bonding with the two. But that might just be a strategy to kill one of them, and then shift blame off them. Emotional vulnerability, even if you lied about it, was one of the best ways to get someone to let their guard down. That was what Kokichi had learnt, anyway. Although he'd always done it with strangers, and had never exactly been honest with it. His version was a lot more like guilt-tripping.
Staring out again, Kokichi stifled a small yawn, covering his mouth with his bandana. He tried not to rub his eyes, and wipe off the make-up underneath them. Before Kirumi had...
While Kirumi had been able to help him, Kokichi had had her get some concealer in his shade - and teach him how to apply it. His dark circles weren't that bad, he just didn't want Shuichi worrying unnecessarily. Besides, it was totally a turn-off when he went all mother-hen (even if something in Kokichi did crave to be taken care of). Some days he hadn't even needed to put concealer on. And the attention Shuichi gave him when he was worried was all kind of nice.
Narrowing his eyes, Kokichi tried to see what they were doing. At first, he'd thought of going to Miu for a pair of dark-vision binoculars, but then he remembered it would be Miu. And she probably wouldn't be able to keep her mouth shut about that. Instead, he had to resort to normal person eyes. Well, he was above average, of course - but mainly normal eyes. Kokichi also took a torch with him, just in case. But everything was pretty illuminated, at the very least.
Kokichi could never forgive himself if something happened to Shuichi, especially if he could prevent it. So he always stayed up. Watching silently, and then waiting. Waiting to see if Shuichi still wanted to talk after training, because as fascinating as their conversations were - they weren’t worth making Shuichi tired. Kokichi staying up himself was a different story, obviously. He wasn’t getting very tired from it. And there was always coffee.
Peering again, Kokichi noticed Kaito standing up and offering Shuichi his hand. So training was over, for now at least. Smiling, Kokichi hung back slightly before starting to follow them - staying in the shadows the entire time, of course. Looking, Shuichi didn’t seem as tired as he had been the previous nights. Maybe he could stay up with Kokichi this time?
Staying silent, Kokichi watched as Maki and Kaito disappeared into their respective rooms, before Shuichi left to go into his. Another beat of silence, and then Kokichi quickly stepped across the empty dormitory to Shuichi’s room, knocking on it, “Open up sleepyhead!”
“Kokichi?”
Sure enough, the door quickly opened, Shuichi staring at Kokichi slightly, as if trying to figure out why Kokichi was there. Moving, he slipped inside of the room, “Wow Shuichi, your room is really boring y’know?”
Tactfully ignoring Kokichi’s taunts, Shuichi headed inside too, “Why are you here, Kokichi?”
“So we can hang out together!” Kokichi felt himself grinning, “Unless my Shuichi hates me so much he doesn’t want to see me?” “Sorry, your Shuichi?” Even with the time, Shuichi still managed to be perfectly sceptical, one eyebrow raised at Kokichi’s antics.
“It’s ok if you hate me Shuichi, cause I actually hate you too!” Kokichi then paused for a second, “Just kidding - that was a lie! Did I get you?”
But even with his usual level of exuberance, Shuichi still seemed to be looking at Kokichi sceptically. Under the mask, Kokichi felt himself panic slightly. If Shuichi knew just how exhausted Kokichi was getting, he’d stop them from meeting up. And then Kokichi wouldn’t be able to spend time with Shuichi anymore. Then he realised, he wasn’t doing any gestures with it. That was why Shuichi was worried!
“Is Shuichi worried about me?” He teased, this time making sure to skip a bit closer and lean into Shuichi grinning up at him and exaggeratedly batting his eyelashes.
“Yes… I am.”
That threw Kokichi off-guard for a second, the level of genuine concern. Recovering quickly, he tried to just grin again and laugh, “Nee-heehee, that’s all part of my masterplan! Once you’re concerned about me-”
“Kokichi,” Shuichi suddenly interrupted, in a rather soft voice. He stood up, making direct eye contact with Kokichi, seemingly oblivious to the butterflies suddenly in Kokichi’s stomach, the effort he was making not to blush. “You seem… burnt out. Are you ok?”
“Of course! You really think the Ultimate Supreme Leader needs something as silly as sleep?”
“You’re not sleeping well?” The question is posed instantly, and with the certainty of Shuichi in a class trial. For a second all Kokichi can do is blink, before he internally curses to himself at the slip-up. He has been sleeping. Not that much, but surely enough to prevent a slip-up like that?
“I’m sleeping fine,” Kokichi puts a grin on again, “I enjoy talking with you Shuichi. Especially after dark…”
“Kokichi, I’m serious,” somehow, Kokichi only now realises just how deeply Shuichi has been staring into his eyes, looking at him, “You… you do seem exhausted.”
“You’re no fun Shumai!” Kokichi pouts, turning away slightly and crossing his arms. Trying to bring a smile out of Kokichi, to let their dynamic go back to normal. Something in Kokichi loves that Shuichi is worried about him. But he also doesn’t want Shuichi to have to be worried at all.
“You need to sleep, Kokichi.”
“Nuh-uh!”
“Yes.”
“No.”
Before it can develop into a back and forth, Shuichi briefly frowns, pinching his nose. “Right, you need to sleep, now.”
The detective glances around, before his eyes land on the bed. “Please Kokichi, just try and go to sleep?”
“Is my Shumai inventing me to get in his bed?”
Even with his tiredness, Kokichi laughs at how flustered Shuichi suddenly becomes, eyes going downwards and face becoming rosy and flushed. “Aww c’mon. Wanting to sleep with me is perfectly normal. I’m really popular-”
“Bed. Now,” there’s something more demanding in Shuichi’s tone, and Kokichi almost moves closer to the bed without thinking.
“Wow, you’re really desperate,” Kokichi grins, “If you wanted to sleep with me this badly-”
“How about a deal?” Shuichi seems just as tired as Kokichi is, but he has a thinking grin on, “Just… try to go to sleep in the bed for ten minutes. If you don’t, we can stay up tonight for as long as you want.”
“And if I do?” Kokichi prompts, before following up, “You’re a pretty shit deal maker Shuichi.”
“But very well,” he grins. He’s not been able to get to sleep in less than two hours ever since the killing game started, and this won’t make any difference. It’s an easy challenge. And one that Shuichi is glad to accept, “I accept your terms! Prepare to lose!”
Oddly, that wouldn’t have been the weirdest thing that Kokichi had said while throwing himself onto a bed, although he’s in probably some of the strangest company. Around him, he can feel Shuichi grimace at the fact he didn’t take off his shoes. He hears Shuichi shuffle again, and then the light is turned off. Kokichi takes one last look at the clock. It’s precisely midnight. Stopping a yawn again, Kokichi grins sleepily at Shuichi, “Well, see you in ten minutes!”
Kokichi didn’t mean to close his eyes on the bed. He didn’t mean to fall asleep. When he reminisces, he isn’t even sure how it happened. Perhaps it was the gentle sound of Shuichi breathing, staying completely still so as not to disturb him. Deep down, Kokchi knows it’s because, for the first time, he truly feels safe.
And if in the morning he wakes up just before the morning announcement and sees Shuichi, asleep in a chair, he doesn’t mention it. He quietly gets his lockpicks out and slips away from the room. And he certainly doesn’t have a smile on his face.

Bail me out? (905 words, M/M)
For Day 21 of @danganronpashipmonths Saioma month. Inspired by the prompt : Cellmates
It’s almost twelve at night, there shouldn’t be any reason Shuichi is getting a call. To be fair, there isn’t much (good) reason he should be up this late either. He’s working on a case, he tells himself. In reality it’s because something in his brain won’t switch off and let him rest. But at the same time… if someone’s calling, it is probably important. There aren’t many reasons he’d call someone this late on a Tuesday night. --------- Shuichi picks up the call anyway, only for it to be Kokichi calling him and asking him to bail him out of jail - to which Shuichi agrees to do, and comes to pick him up. They talk for a bit in the car, and Shuichi is more honest when he's tired...

Shuichi picks up his phone quickly, squinting at the light for a second before checking the number. It’s unknown, because of course it is. There’s a second when he thinks about declining, but then he does decide to pick up. Almost instantly he holds the phone away from him as noise bursts through, “Shuichi!”
“Kokichi?” He double-checks the caller ID for a second, before frowning, “What are you calling me on?”
“You’re my one free phone call in jail,” the voice says cheerfully, “Oh, by the way - I probably have to tell you this, but there’s a pretty cute police officer leaning over my shoulder right now and listening in.”
“Hold on,” Shuichi takes a moment to process this, before saying the first thing that came to mind, “Why did you call me?”
“What do you mean?” Kokichi asks, and Shuichi can practically picture him turning his head in confusion, a small smile on his face.
“Shouldn’t you be talking to a solicitor?” Shuichi presses, “You need to know your rights, Kokichi. Do you have legal advice currently, what were you arrested for, are-”
“Geez, don’t be such a buzzkill,” a yawn is suddenly heard from the phone, “I don't, trespassing, and can you pick me up and bail me out?”
“What?”
“Pretty please? With a cherry on top?” Kokichi pauses, “If not I’ll set D.I.C.E. on you.”
“Slow down,” Shuichi says firmly, “Right. Why were you arrested for trespassing?”
“Mmm,” there’s a pause, “No comment, Mr. Police is looking at me suuuper suspiciously.”
“Ok,” Shuichi thinks for a second as well, “Fine. I can come bail you out, how much will it be and where are you being held?”
Just as Kokichi starts to answer, the phone is taken away. Shuichi gets nervous for a second, before a new voice comes in. And then, almost half an hour later, Shuichi arrives at the police station, bail money in hand and with a frown. As he enters, he looks around for a second. There are three people in the room, a receptionist of some kind, a very tired looking police officer, and Kokichi.
“Shuichi!” The way Kokichi immediately brightens makes Shuichi’s heart sing, and he gives a small smile in return. To his relief, Kokichi does stay silent while they sort out all the legal matters, and doesn’t speak again until they’re officially outside the station - and Kokichi is a free(er) man. Somehow, he skips down the street without any worries, “Y’know, thanks Shuichi.”
Kokichi waits a second before continuing, “Shuichi, what’s wrong? Why are you mad? Is it me? Is it? Is it? Is-”
“It’s almost one in the morning Kokichi,” Shuichi looks around, “How do you have that much energy?”
“I actually had a pretty good nap in Ikea, so I’m not that sleepy.”
“I-Ikea?” Shuichi repeats, turning fully around, “That was where you got arrested for trespassing, Ikea?”
“Are you mad?” Kokichi had a smile on his face, “It’s whatevs. I can just pay them later.”
“Of course you can,” shaking his head slightly, Shuichi opens the car door, “Get in.”
“Y’know, that’s the exact same thing the police officer told me. Although I suppose you are with the police, Shuichi.”
“I will set Maki on you,” Shuichi attempts to threaten, although he doesn’t really mind when Kokichi just laughs instead. “Right, to your apartment.”
“To the store.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Can I…” Kokichi trails his voice as Shuichi climbs into the driver’s seat, waiting until he can hear again, “Bribe you?”
“You needed me to pay your bail.”
“Touché.” Kokichi considers again, “I can bribe you without money?”
Shuichi begins to turn the car on, but decides to humour him, “Like what?”
“We could… kiss.”
Something that Shuichi hates about staying up so late is it removes his filter. He becomes incredibly honest, to a more extreme point. And at almost one in the morning, outside of a police station, Shuichi turns fully to face Kokichi. “Alright then.”
His face immediately burns with blush, but as Kokichi’s cheeks become slightly pink too, he stays where he is. Conscious of how fast his heart is beating when Kokichi briefly looks him up and down, before locking their gaze. Shuichi only focuses on Kokichi’s eyes as they become closer, until suddenly their lips intertwine.
Even with the space in between them, it feels completely right - completely natural. Reaching out, Shuichi leans down slightly while his hand tilts Kokichi’s head up. As his hand brushes Kokichi’s face, he can almost see sparkles appearing in Kokichi’s eyes. And when they break, both of their eyes are shining, and both of them are smiling.
Kokichi glances around at their surroundings, and grins, “Wow Shuichi, I wouldn’t expect that from you.”
“W-what do you mean?” Shuichi asks defensively, “You kissed me!”
“Maybe,” Kokichi acknowledges, glancing at Shuichi out of the corner of his eye, with something more in his look, “You’re a pretty good kisser, y’know.”

Modelling favours (856 words, M/M)
For Day 16 of @danganronpashipmonths Saioma month. Inspired by the prompt : Talent Swap AU
Shuichi has been enjoying his new lab, but he wants company. Kokichi has been enjoyed his new lab as well, but he needs a new model for his work. Kokichi has a genius idea on how to solve this problem, and just needs Shuichi to tag along with the idea.
Or~ Kokichi tries to convince Shuichi to model for him, after Shuichi's been pining
Read on Ao3 or below
Kokichi was an enigma. Shuichi could say that without any doubt. And if he may, he would argue that his opinion carried more weight than most; he was the Ultimate Anthropologist afterall. And if he couldn’t figure it out, he doubted anyone else could. Perhaps the Ultimate Psychologist, or (considering how guarded Kokichi was at times) the Ultimate Therapist? Certainly no-one else in this school, at the very least. Well, no other student in this killing game.
Maybe he should ask Kaede, to see if they could team up. Shuichi would be the expert in human nature, and Kaede could be the much needed mystery solver (as the Ultimate Detective). But there was a small part of him that thought it might be better to just ask Kokichi. He did lie, a lot, but he could be honest. And there were times when the two would hang out, that Kokichi did seem genuine. Incredibly genuine. Even if he did try to mask it immediately.
Shuichi thought about potentially asking Kokichi to his lab, before dismissing that idea. In a way, it was sad that both of them had gotten their labs at the same time. Shuichi would have enjoyed being able to show Kokichi his lab, and the various wonders that were in it. And he would like to see Kokichi’s as well - although he was consistently keeping it locked. In all honesty, that part perplexed Shuichi. There was a cylinder lock on the art lab - but no key.
Looking around again, Shuichi felt himself smile as he looked at the books. There was something so beautiful in humanity, and especially in books. Because books always showed how important something was. The things contained in them were so beautiful, in fact, that humans had chosen to record them - hoping the knowledge would be available for the rest of the century. That was why Shuichi was keeping a notebook now, and why he was so grateful he knew shorthand. It was beautiful that the world would be able to experience Kokichi for as long as this book survived. And that he would be able to experience Kokichi as well, even if…
Death could be beautiful as well. But that wasn’t something that Shuichi wanted to think about. Especially with Kokichi. Not with him. Just as Shuichi’s thoughts began to stray to the sparkling, purple-haired boy - a knock distracted him. A series of knocks, actually, all impatient and erratic. Then a cheery shout, “Hey Shuichi! Open the door!”
“It’s not locked,” Shuichi responded, a smile on his face as the door immediately opened - Kokichi tumbling out with a massive grin on his face, some paint on him. There was a concerning amount of paint on him actually, more than his usual messy but artistic apron. It looked like Kokichi had been making use of his lab and genuinely painting.
“Shuichi!” Kokichi immediately began to move forward, trying to hug Shuichi and pouting when he dodged, “Why are you running? Hey? Hey!”
“You’re covered in paint, Kokichi,” he pointed out, dodging out of the way again, “I don’t want it on my uniform.”
“You have another one, riiight?” Kokichi grinned, doing what could only be called puppy dog eyes, “Besides, aren’t all anthropologists like ‘this is only a material possession, it is replaceable’ and stuff? Now hug me!”
“I-” Shuichi looked at Kokichi in front of him, before sighing slightly, “Fine.”
Kokichi immediately buried his face in Shuichi’s frame, hugging Shuichi tightly before looking up, “I have a favour to cash in.”
“Don’t you mean a favour to ask?”
“Nope.”
“You’re sure?”
“Yup!”
Releasing Shuichi, Kokichi stepped back, “You asked me to corroborate your alibi in the class trial, riiight? So you owe me.”
“That was so we both wouldn’t die!” Shuichi protested, but he had a fond smile on his face.
“Whatevs,” Kokichi let his eyes sparkle slightly, knowing the blush it would cause on Shuichi, “Now will you help mee?”
“Maybe,” Shuichi knew Kokichi well enough to not immediately say yes, “What’s the favour?”
“I want to paint you.”
“P-Paint me?”
“Yup.” Kokichi said it was like the easiest thing in the world, “I mainly do hyper-realism in paintings, so I need a model!”
“Why me?” Shuichi couldn’t stop more blush from appealing on his face, briefly averting his eyes.
“You’re the prettiest here, obviously.”
“Really?” For a second Shuichi tried to look anywhere other than Kokichi, but eventually he looked up. And, to his surprise, there was some blush on Kokichi’s face. It was partially disguised by red paint, which Shuichi was now fairly sure was deliberate. Almost subconsciously, Shuichi reached out, gently wiping the still wet paint of Kokichi’s cheek. Kokichi was now just as red as before, but it was a natural blush now.
Puffing out his cheeks, Kokichi slowly drew away from Shuichi’s touch, before choking out, “Geez. If you wanted to touch me that badly you could’ve just asked, y’know.”
“Of course, my apologies.”
“Yeah, yeah. Whatevs. I like you too.”
Something in Shuichi’s heart missed a beat there, although it was certainly in happiness.
“You still want to model for me?!”
