LITERALLY THIS. Hajime is so conflicted that it's funny but man does he care even if he's in denial about it. Hajime cares a lot about Nagito's input and his well being despite everything, he doesn't want to think about it because it's so complicated though.

Their relationship with how conflicted Hajime feels about the complex and confusing person that is Nagito is always such a brain worm for me. They're so complicated and endearing. Their dynamic with how reciprocal they can be and how much they try to understand each other when they're so confusing to each other is so special. Hajime feels betrayed and is hurt when Nagito breaks down and gets to his worst, and Nagito loves Hajime and as always doesn't think he deserves any reciprocation but is still sad when it's gone.

Then eventually Nagito himself feels betrayed finding out they're terrorists and the breakup period gets to its climax. Nagito is lashing out, but he still cares despite everything and he's aware but confused about it. Hajime cares despite everything but denies it as his way of reacting just to Nagito's worst mentally and his moral grayness. Hajime's conflicted portrayal of grief over Nagito when their relationship of not understanding each other but caring is so complicated and perfect.

Nagito's freak out in Chapter 1 feels like a breakup for Nagito and Hajime in ways.

Whether he wants to admit it or not Hajime still cares for Nagito and that's conflicting for Hajime. He doesn't want to think about his feelings, he's upset and confused, and he feels as if he was tricked by Nagito. He's practically heartbroken,

"How could someone so kind hearted and pleasant to be around trick me like this?"

But even so, curiously, upset, and frustratedly, Hajime wants to understand Nagito. He wants to understand him, and he's afraid of him because, I mean, a guy who thinks anything in the name of hope is okay even murder, is scary who can blame him!
