this is for my chapter 5 au... I tried to compose a toxic doomed yaoi saiouma essay in the tags just now but it went over the tag limit (mortifying) so I'm just going to paste it under the cut!!

#look.. in my mind there is no world where shuichi truly comes around on kokichi #but there is TOTALLY a world where he feels eternally fucked up and guilty about assisting in his suicide #and cant bring himself to hate anymore #cant bring himself to reject the casual but blatantly self-indulgent touches of the boy hes about to murder in the most excruciating way possible #just let him have his fun #let him squeeze your shoulder a little too long #its the least you can do when hes about to let his entire body be turned into an unrecognizable puddle of gore #you dont have to pretend you like it. he KNOWS you dont like it. just let it happen & soon enough itll be over and youll never have to see him again #youll never be *able* to see him again. nothing left of him to even call a body #fucking unidentifiable #god. #(to be clear i dont approve of that logic at all but i sure think shuichi would feel that way)

As my favorite character, Kokichi spiraling makes me very invested. I love his POV.

I did want to color this but, my wrist was hurting lol - I'll probably get around to a different piece with color. Also, I don't remember the V3 dorm bathroom, so I get to just, modify THH's bathroom.

Not to mention his voice: like the melancholic triads of a shelved viola or symphonic croaks of a chorus frog orchestra. Something complex and forlorn attaches to every phrase uttered; yet, Kokichi would be lying if he claimed it wasn’t calming to listen to. The perfect voice to read aloud a tragedy, he thinks.

Kokichi is in a Brobdingnagian predicament: while scouting for a new DICE hideout, he's become lost, injured, and stranded in the mountains! Luckily, his vampiric rescuer is more interested in discussing mystery novels than eating him - or, at least, he's trying very hard not to eat him. This fic is a delightful combination of silly, tense, and angsty. If you're a fan of found-family DICE, you'll love their portrayal here, as well as the author's characterization of Kokichi as the leader who feels that he's failed them. Shuichi as a vampire is just the right combination of dangerous and adorably socially awkward, and the story's worldbuilding is masterfully executed to make the plot feel as natural as it is unique. We've been immensely impressed with Kiwi_LuminaryoftheStars' work so far and this story is no exception. IT HAS ARRIVED.

It should be no surprise to anyone that Dawn Again is my favorite Saiouma fanfiction of all time. It surpassed Kriegspiel and Psychobabble in my brain space and soared to the top of my list forever and ever. I could sing it’s praise for hours, complimenting the dynamics, the reimagined scenarios, the formatting, and experimentation on the writing side, the thoughtfulness of the clues, the games, and the romance.

Listen. I am a shipper at heart. I don’t read fanfiction if it doesn’t include either my favorite little guys or my favorite character dynamics in it. I also cannot read just fluff or angst. I need there to be something extra, something to chew on. Most of the time this takes the form of canon divergence for my favorite series—reimagining/playing in the space and Dawn Again far exceeded my expectations for this.

I love Shuichi in this fic. I love his development. I love the other side we get to see of him, his cool and collected nature. I love to see him flustered but also cold and confident. He’s so in his head, I always love seeing how he comes across to others. I love Kokichi in this fic. I love his tricks, his mechanics, his quiet observations, and his stubbornness. I love the way the two push and pull one another, the ways they test and play and bond over the course of ten chapters. I love the way Kokichi is a few steps ahead but Shuichi is always on the verge of catching up.

I love them, I love them, I love them.

I am so happy that the physical book has come home. I’ve had it downloaded on my IPad in PDF but to have and to hold it is next level. It feels so official and I am so honored to have it sitting on my shelf. This picture is kinda shitty in quality, but I am loving the book itself.

Seriously considering doing a saiouma vampire one-shot, Jesus Christ. My repressed teenage vampire phase is cropping back up reading some of these fics on my lunch break and I may be trying to fend it off but I’m losing, dammit.

I rewatched drv3 and I want to say that I don't dislike Saiouma nor Shuichi at all, -quite the opposite, really!!- but I hate that the basis for it seems to be the mistranslation of Kokichi deeming Shuichi "trustworthy" when in the og game he labels him with "stay catious", which is the OPPOSITE of trustworthy.

Of course he'd be suspicious of a detective being put into a murder mystery killing game, he thought Shuichi was the mastermind! It's such a turn off whenever the "trustworthy" thing is mentioned in fics because it doesn't make any sense: It's not like they had many positive interactions together that would justify Shuichi somehow being trustworthy- at best there's the time Shuichi bandaged Kokichi's finger (basing it all on that would be too emotion driven for someone as logical as Kokichi), at worst there's when Shuichi left Kokichi's concussed ahh to wobble off screen.

(Unrelated, but why do people write Kokichi SOLELY thinking of Shuichi on his deathbed, rather than DICE? He knows DICE isn't real but in his mind that's his family and always has been. People idly mention Gonta too occasionally, but aside from the guilt of getting him killed, Kokichi would think of Gonta more, bc they were actually friends and were often seen hanging out.)

Also the way Kokichi's arc ends with Shuichi deciding there was nothing to Kokichi but lies hurt sm like WDYM? Kaito may have omitted some things, but he still spelled the answer out for you, detective. (He figures it out later when going into Kokichi's room though so it's not a big deal but STILL💔💔)

I just wish saiouma fics weren't so centered on, well... A lie. There's still plenty of ways to develop them together, even without the trustworthy label! I like their ship, to an extent, and I believe it can be done well while staying true to the og game, but so many things about them seem to be taken at face value rather than truly analyzed. Their dynamic would be more interesting if it stayed true to them, and if both of their flaws were acknowledged, as well as the mind games there could be with Kokichi suspecting Shuichi.

Crazy how the localization also fucked up Kokichi's relationship with Kaito (for example, in ch 2 in the og Kaito tells Maki to let Kokichi go or he'll die, while in the english ver he tells her to let him go or she'll die; end of ch 5, og Kaito says "He was a liar to the core", rather than "he was a lying sack of shit" ) and Gonta (in the og it was more clear Gonta and Kokichi were scheming together in ch2, and that Gonta knew about the true purpose of the insect meet and greet; in general, Gonta is portayed in the english ver as a dumb caveman and I wish people wrote him by just making him talk formally but in the third person like he does in japanese, because it takes away from his character- and, by extension, Kokichi's)

I've read SO much fanfiction in this fandom, and the probability of me finding something that addresses the canon dynamics rather than the localization ones is lower than the chance of a meteorite coming to kill me on my birthday. What a shame.

I still love most things this fandom makes, so I guess this -the trustworthy thing- is just a pet peeve of mine.
