DOFF the MASK
Masters of portraiture
Even if the same person is photographed by a different photographer, the resulting portrait will be completely different.
There are no two portraits in the world that are the same.
Ten encounters between giants that represent the 20th century.

Photograph by Man Ray
Man Ray (Self-Portrait)
Subject
[Self-Portrait] The title of Man Ray's autobiography is "Self-Portrait," and in fact he left behind a great number of self-portraits. Many of the Surrealist artists of the time, including Dali and Duchamp, who were his friends, were self-exhibitionist artists, and Man Ray could be considered one of them.

Photograph by Philippe Halsman
Salvador Dalí, Artist, 1904-1989
Subject
[Salvador Dali] A genius surrealist painter born in the Catalonia region of Spain. He was a solitary artist who intrigued those around him with his many strange, self-exhibiting words and actions, and who drew the backlash of other artists for his support of dictatorial government. However, there is also a theory that these were just his own kind of performance. He was also famous for his passionate love affair with Gala Eluard, whom he married at the age of 30.

Photograph by Cecil Beaton
Thomas Stearns Eliot, Poet, Playwright, 1888-1965
Subject
[T. S. Eliot] British poet, playwright, and literary critic. He is famous for his five-part poem, "The Waste Land." He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. He is also known as a conservative thinker. He is a photogenic man of letters who has been the subject of many photographers and has left behind many portraits.

Photograph by Edward Steichen
Gary Cooper, Actor, 1901-1961
Subject
[Gary Cooper] Born in Montana, USA. At the age of 25, he set his sights on becoming an actor, and four years later, he rose to stardom with the huge success of "Morocco." In 1936, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "The Opera Hat," and grew into a leading Hollywood actor. He went on to win three Oscars. Tall and stylish, he was also known as an actor who looked good in suits. His most famous works include "High Noon."

Photograph by Arnold Newman
Truman Capote, Author, 1924-1984
Subject
[Truman Capote] His parents divorced when he was a child, and he moved to his relatives' houses many times. As a result, he rarely went to school and studied on his own. At the age of 19, he won the O. Henry Award and was praised as "Enfant Terrible." He continued to attract attention as a young genius writer, and in 1966 he also had success with non-fiction, with "In Cold Blood." In his later years, he became addicted to alcohol and drugs.

Photograph by Horst P. Horst
Yves Saint-Laurent, Fashion Designer, 1936-2008
Subject
[Yves Saint Laurent] Born in French Algeria. At the age of 21, he was appointed chief designer of Dior, which was in financial difficulty. At his debut collection, a French newspaper highly praised him, saying, "Yves saved France. He will continue to protect the great tradition of Dior." In 1962, he launched his own signature brand. He retired in 2002.

Photograph by Jeanloup Sieff
Homage to Georges Seurat
Subject
[Homage to Georges Seurat] This work was taken by Jeanloup Sieff as a homage to the 19th century Neo-Impressionist painter Georges Seurat. In keeping with Seurat's style, which established a new style of expression using pointillism, Sieff has created a nude with blurred focus and reduced brightness in accordance with the theory of light.

Photograph by David Bailey
Catherine Deneuve, Actress, 1943-
Subject
[Catherine Deneuve] An actress from Paris, France. Both her parents and her sister are actors, so she comes from a family of actors. She married David Bailey, who took this photo, in 1965. She later had children with film director Roger Vadim and actor Marcello Mastroianni. She is also known as Yves Saint Laurent's muse. Her most famous works include "Belle de Jour," "Indochine," and "Paula X."

Photograph by Henri Cartier-Bresson
Lucian Freud, Artist, 1922-
Subject
[Lucian Freud] Grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Born in Berlin, he moved to England with his family and became a painter. His early works were influenced by surrealism, but from the 1950s he began to paint portraits, especially nudes. His nude portrait of Kate Moss, painted in 2005, is particularly famous.

Photograph by Brian Griffin
Damien Hirst, Artist, 1965-
Subject
[Damien Hirst] British contemporary artist. He rose to fame in the 1990s with his series of formaldehyde-soaked cows and sharks called "Natural History." He was criticized by some animal rights groups for his work sacrificing animals. Since 1995, he has come out about his drug and alcohol addiction, which has had a strong influence on his work.

St Finnian’s Day

The Witch by Lucien-Levy Dhurmer. Source: Pinterest
Today is St Finnian’s Day, also known as St Lucia’s or St Lucy’s Eve. Lucia was a saint much honoured in Scandinavia and her memory lingered long in those parts of northern Britain occupied by Scandinavian settlers during the Viking invasions. Tonight the so-called Lucian witches are rumoured to be abroad, surrounded by evil faeries and their sinister black cat familiars. This echo of pre-Christian darkness at the darkest time of the year for some reason became associated with the blameless Irish saint, Finnian. Apparently Finnian’s otherworldly followers will abduct anyone unwise enough to be out tonight without having eaten his or her supper. This tall tale probably owes more to frustrated parents trying to get their children to eat their greens than any maligned saint or pagan predator.
Little is known of Finnian other than he died at Clonnard in Ireland, in the sixth century, apparently sacrificing himself so that ‘the people of the Gael’ would not die of the plague. Today was also the day that Christmas Season Games would begin to be played. With intriguing names like My Lady’s Toilet and Hawld Hard, most were a variant on forfeits or blind man’s buff. Few have survived to the present day, all being sucked into the ubiquitous festive games of charades.

I think I've made a post about this before but I want to talk about my OCs, the Saints ( name pending)!
I don't quite know how to describe what they look like to me, but: they are mechanical in nature but they are covered in fabric that resembles fur/ feathers/cloth; quadrupedal; they resemble a mix between a dog, a bird and a machine; they have a structure coming out of their back that resembles a pair of wings, although very few of them can actually fly.
Honestly, they resemble the AI generated creatures from the erosion bird thingy that went around tiktok a while ago

They were designed to be purposefully unsettling.
Inside the saint's internal machinery is a small box (reliquary) that holds a single, seemingly normal item.
Designed and brought to life by government-backed scientists on Canis Majoree, a Saint was gifted to each of the nations. They don't do much- they just sort of wander, except for in Cygnus, where they seem to have domesticated theirs. Each saint will lash out if someone tries to mess with their internal mechanisms.
Despite having "come to life" over a decade ago, the Saints need no fuel. This is because they run on "perpetual motion", a mysterious energy source that Canis Majoree has somehow mastered.
Anyways...
Perpetual motion?
This form of energy can only exist because of human souls. A captured soul can theoretically power a machine forever, as a human soul can never be destroyed. These souls have been captured in a less-than-ethical manner and do not want to be in some engine.
Relics?
Seemingly normal items that secretly have great power. When they're brought together, power is created, power that the creature known as "Dianne" would like to harness. "Dianne" is unable to use human souls for power, so she seeks the relics.
The relics were put in the Saints as a way to protect them. Indeed, a Saint will fight to the death before it lets anyone access the reliquary.
Why where the saints given away as gifts?
Primarily to spread out the relics (distance is safety), but also:
- to show off Canis's technological capabilities
-the idea was that the nations would keep the saints in treasuries and other protected places like museums and palaces. This is not what happened- instead of being treated like a valuable treasure, they're treated more like a weird uncle that's around our of obligation
- a bit of... Debt building, I guess? Like. Look what we gave you, now can you do this thing for us
Basically, Tenry and co. are being paid to go and get the relics. Magdalene knows where each saint is going to be, Lucian is a little too familiar with how they work, Tenry is supposedly just muscle, and Hanelore somehow gets swept up into this thing and would very much like to go home.
Oh, and because Polaris has a space theme going on, each of the saint's placeholder names is that of a dog sent to space by the Soviets. Surprisingly , there are enough of them for this
#Polaris#Untitled Polaris project#saints oc#Tenry Cliffsbane#Magdalene Hightower#Lucian Leprae#Hanelore#there's 22 of them help#they'll go about it 39 clues style. multiple relics per book
