So, I finally got to crack open my copy of the Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge!
First off, this is a visually gorgeous game. I love the character cards, and I particularly love the range of characters a person can play as. All the senshi, villains from the first two seasons, and even side characters like the Serenities (princess, queen, and neo queen), King Endymion, and moon cats. Every character has a unique mix of dice they have access to, as well as a special ability.
I haven’t played a lot of dice games in the past, so a lot of the mechanics were new to me. But after playing a few rounds, we started to get the hang of it. Dice act as both your attack source and your score. Rolling high numbers enables you to capture opponents’ dice, which are then tallied up at the end of the round. However, the turn order is determined by who rolled the lowest single number, so having high rolls is not always a benefit.
One thing we struggled with was how the game is meant to work with more than two players. Even though the box says the game can be played with 2-8 players, it’s really meant to be played between an even number of characters. Beyond two players, you need to dip into the special rules, which include people playing multiple characters. We didn’t really want to do that, since we were still figuring out the mechanics, so we wound up just sticking to the base rules and stretching the rules where necessary with our three players. Now that I’ve got a better grasp on it, I’d like to try it with multiple characters to do it properly.
Character powers are interesting. Powers can only be used a limited number of times, and can be things like rerolling, forcing someone else to reroll, forcing a die out of play, or blocking someone from taking your die.
And that last power? Is really, really freaking useful. And unlike many powers, only one character has access to it, and that character is Mamoru. Our Mamoru easily wiped the floor with all of us, partly because she had two opportunities to block us at key moments.
I found that playing Kunzite was a very high risk/high reward experience. Kunzite gets two D20s as his starting dice, which is a huge advantage. However, since I never rolled low enough to go first in the round, those D20s made enticing targets, so I always lost them really fast.
Overall, it’s a game I would absolutely like to play again. It’s confusing to pick up, but once you start to understand the mechanics, it makes for a quick social game with a lot of fun Sailor Moon elements worked in.

If anyone here plays/has played Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge, I’ve homebrewed a card for Cure Black and Cure White. Once per game they can capture the die with the highest number showing with their Marble Screw attack instead of using their dice.

Did someone say 'Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge'? I normally don't go for Crystal stuff, but when I saw it was a redux of the Button Men game from the 90s, I had to pick it up.
The nerd in me is extremely happy 🌙

Sailor Moon Crystal Dice Challenge.
I love all the cards.
The Shitennou are amazing!
Note that the Shitennou's poses are somehow similar to the Senshi, each couple posing quite similar.
