Finally finished to watch Black Sails…and man, I loved it with every fibre of my being ❤️
Tho, the only thing that disappointed me is that, at the end of the last episode, I expected something like and old Long John Silver narrating it all at a young Jim Hawkins. I mean, it was nice to see other really existed pirates enter the (very last) scene and the “birth” of the classic pirate Jolly Roger…but I have to be honest that it left some bittersweet after notes, since the show was basically around the figures of Flint and Silver, which are both imaginary characters from Treasure Island. I would have loved a wink to Stevenson’s novel, since it’s basically the source material :’)
Apart of that, really a great show! Can’t recommend it enough, even if I was the first in line to watch it with a delay of, like 9 years xD
#Marian watches Black Sails#black sails#captain flint#long john silver#treasure island#and now I’ll just stare into void till I find something to watch#joking I have to kick myself into watching the latest One Piece episodes#and the Nier automata anime#and a trillion more things I’ve always saved for later >.>

okay just watched Tango's latest episode and like. hole jokes aside, something about those lighting glitches on the bedrock is driving me insane. and i know its not a huge deal, they're just glitches, but like. like. you carve a hole through the bedrock. wings you stole from a ship that sailed a void not unlike this one cling to your back, the only thing that will keep you alive down there. you leave a light in the opening to guide you home, a lifeline, the only spark in an infinite darkness. you fall. below you waits the void, and above you (where there should only be one) dozens, Hundreds of lights mar the bedrock ceiling, drowning out your little spark with their sweet, inviting glow. they call out safety, freedom, home, and they stretch out jagged rocks like teeth that will tear through your wings and rip through your hearts and leave you to drown in the abyss beneath. you are trapped between a wall of fangs and an ocean of hunger, false lights over a void-dark sea. there is only one way out. do not lose track of it.
#um. sorry for going insane it will happen again#this is absolutely about anglerfish btw#i saw the lights and was immediately like ANGLERFISH??? VOID ANGLERFISH?????#Tangotek#i guess?#hermitcraft#I guess??#rot talk

Hi guys, this is sort of my official "please, for the love of god, listen to Skyjacks with me” post because I’m losing my mind and all the content I can find is from the latest stuff right now, and I don’t want to spoil myself. I want to be able to talk about this with people!!!! I will make a watch (listen) party discord if there is enough interest. Just give it a chance; you won’t regret it. Also, some information may be wrong or outdated. I’m on episode 11 out of over 200.
Skyjacks is a ttrpg podcast about sky pirates in a world where there was a catastrophe about 200 years ago that left the sea unsafe to sail and maybe even damaged the entire world to the point where civilization is scattered and in small groups. There is very casual queer rep, and it’s casual to the point where it really just fits into the world perfectly.
A brief summary of the premise of the first episode will hopefully get you hooked. I’m really bad at summaries, but I promise it’s a billion times better than how I talked about it here:
Captain Orimar Vale is dead, and a mutiny will be on Gable, Jonnit, Travis, and Dref’s hands if they are unable to keep up the ruse of him being alive. To do this, necromancy (deeply forbidden magic) is performed by the Dref, the ship's doctor, to turn him into a semi-functional zombie. Captain Orimar is famous for his abilities as a captain; to replicate this will take great skill.
As they run out of supplies, they make a desperate decision: port on the land of one of Orimar’s scorned lovers or deal with the growing uneasiness of the rest of the crew. They haven’t seen their captain healthy in months, and whispers about his health are starting. However, greater danger will await them when they take to the skies again, lurking just beyond the clouds…
And more propaganda as to why I think you guys will like it:
There are unique and interesting gameplay mechanics they use to tell a really cool story, and if you like Hermitcraft or any other sorta storytelling-based SMP, I promise you’ll like it. Like. If you liked Boatem from Hermitcraft 8, you’ll love the characters in Skyjacks. The players are exceptionally good at playing their characters, their humour is unmatched by anything similar I’ve had the pleasure of seeing, and the story is prioritized, which I think is an amazing choice.
Best part? It’s still ongoing after, like, 5 years. Some people have left, but a good chunk of the OG cast has stayed. Not that leaving is bad, because holy crap, 5 years is a long time, and stories have to end at some point! It’s a good way of getting into something and knowing there is still a shit ton of content to be explored.
The music is good. The story is good. The characters and humour are amazing. The lore of the world is sprinkled throughout, and as you learn more about the world, the more excited you get. It’s incredible so far, and if you decide to listen to it, I will actually love you forever and ever. My boyfriend is on episode 190, and he finds it so funny every time I go. Oh my god, this is so cool.
Link to the podcast, but in a playlist (up to 180). So it’s in order and easy to find, since it’s a part of something else from the oneshot network:
#I need you guys to get into skyjacks I cannot do this alone#Can’t even look in the skyjacks tag for fan art to loose my mind about because I am literally over 200 1hr+ episodes BEHIND#I promise it is so worth it#I’m almost done episode 11 :#which is so so early so it would be very easy to catch up to me#I’m going to reblog this once a day or so I think#collapses in a heap of dust this post was never supposed to be this long#also please don’t spoil me if you’re ahead or get ahead guys istg i will kill you with my bare hands I’ll put my episode number in my pinne#ack tags too long#me when I infodump for 45 minutes straight when I should be working on my final essay#I’m dragging you fuckers kicking and screaming. Please guys.#I realize now this will like definitely show up in the tags but honestly I don’t know if that matters

So if we must sail through dangerous oceans and beaches I'll go where Poseidon won't reach us And if I gotta drop another infant from a wall In an instant so we all don't die Then I'll become the monster
(Monster from EPIC: The Musical)
Stargazer's the only character from the main trio who doesn't become an avatar at any point! She has a lot on her plate here, at least she has Parhelion in the main story... I'll jump a bit further in the plot this time - Newt was already discovered to be a Desolation avatar at this point.
Latest venture got the trio to a Slaughter arena, and both of Stargazer's companions wanted to put an end to it. Yet, a quarrel of two powerful beings, fueled by a murderous spirit of the place, couldn't end in a simple altercation. Guests were ecstatic about the fight - not so much about the decision to let the downed fighters "rest", yet no one seemed to object. To stunned Stargazer's suprize, it was a simple dragon-gladiator who showed up on the side of the arena to clean up the mess. As a healer, Stargazer always avoid unneeded violence. Her prerogative was saving lives, not taking them, and she was successful to stay true to this motto for years. Besides, in a team of two monsters and a dragon she was the weakest and, most importantly, the most fragile. But now? She didn't care anymore. Landing on a bloody sand of the arena, Stargazer couldn't find even a drop of fear in her. All she had was dull exhaustion and determination. She needs to find her kid, but she won't lose the remains of her family in the process.
A little tip about trio's quest...
I reeeeally want to talk about Stargazer's guilt, especially since this song fits this part of her AU arc as well, but I would rather keep the story short and to the point this time… I even wrote that part, guess I'll have to draw a different piece for this narrative?.. 👀 Stargazer sertantly deserves a deeper and better look, I think this one's the weakest on this front comparing to my previous two posts Also def would love to talk about the Slaughter arena episode more, it's the lowest of lows in Newt and Iris relationship :(

request for izzy hands x gn or male reader where reader is going through a depressive episode
Izzy Hands x Reader
words: 2550
google docs pages: 5
warnings: Mentions of drinking, abuse, depression yk the usual, a mention of a suicidal thought, start of S2 spoilers
opening: Blackbeard was back, but different. The way he’d been treating the crew had gone on for too long, and it was getting hard to bear.
AN// Reader can be any gender! A small break from fluff, and back to beloved angst with comfort from a character who does not recognise the word comfort<3 I hope I stayed on topic, since I wrote half of this a little mindlessly :”D Thank you for the request !!
“Rather share the burden”
Sailing with Blackbeard had turned into all you knew. So many years on the seas together with the same crew, one can’t help but to start getting used to some of the men and their personalities. Even when the Revenge’s crew had joined it, it didn’t take long for you to get used to them too, to get to know them. So it was no wonder you’d started feeling conflicted the second this new Blackbeard had come into the picture. That was not the captain you’d sworn your life to. He was radical, at times seemingly insane. Like a shell of the man who you’d known, controlled by someone else now. He’d made the crew do rather horrendous acts, and at first it’d been okay. But day after day of massacring the men from other ships and looting them after had started to weigh the crew down. Sure, others were handling it better than some but ultimately everyone agreed that some of the attacks were getting a little out of line even for a pirate to do.
There was so much plunder coming and going that some nights the only work you had to do was to throw some overboard. The attacks themselves were brutal, but wasting whatever loot the crew had gained made it all feel like it was all for nothing. What was the point of any of this, if the items gained meant nothing and were thrown away when something new was coming in?
And by the signs Blackbeard was giving, he didn’t care either. The torture like environment you had to live in ultimately were for nothing and for no reason. You wanted to spend time with the crew and feel some kind of community around you, but something in you didn’t allow that. It felt like you were bringing more weight to their shared table, and doing that felt wrong. They were dealing with enough as it was, so you retreated to being on your own. And that had been easy, considering the others spent most of their time together, only interacting with you when there was work to do. You didn’t dare to step out of line, no matter how tired you were. You’d seen how this new captain reacted to that. Better to just do as you were told.
Being at the sidelines every free moment given, you didn’t think anyone had noticed any change in you. You would spend time on the main deck, excusing the long times spent there by saying you’d been sweeping it clean. In truth you would either be hanging around the bow of the ship if no one had noticed you slither over there, or in the crowsnest. All the places no one usually thought of checking or went to. Sometimes you’d find tears welling up in your eyes, only half of those times did you allow them to stream down freely. Though, the warmth the tears brought was never unwelcome, using it as an advantage against the rather cold air when the ‘deck sweeping’ took a little longer than expected. At times you’d just find yourself leaning against one of the masts, a bottle of whatever the latest loot had in it in hand. Sometimes more buzzed than others, but you pretended like it helped. And through all this, you thought no one had the time to notice. But someone in the crew distanced himself in the same way rather often, and it didn’t take him long to catch up on what was going on.
Izzy had been well aware of your new habits, finding you away from the crew and instead alone at the far corners of the ship. He’d known you since the day you’d joined Blackbeard’s crew, and by this point the first mate had grown close to you, sharing a few similar traits and enjoying each other's company. So, as much as he was hurting himself, the soft spot he had for you ached at the sight of your condition.
He wasn’t sure if you wanted company at those times you drifted away from everyone, so he did not offer it. Instead, he tried to shield you from the reality you’d been living in. He’d keep commanding the crew with the orders given by Blackbeard, but shield you from it and offer to do the jobs meant for you himself. Izzy could see hints of fear and shame in your eyes each time he offered to do the work for you, knowing you didn’t want to be caught not doing as you were told. But he trusted you knew where to hide and get some rest. He trusted that you wouldn’t get yourself caught because he’d take the hits for it. And this worked for some time, even if he wasn’t able to see huge changes in you. You had still gotten more rest than you’d been able to get in a few weeks, but that didn’t change how you felt internally. You’d seen how Izzy lmped, pretending as if he was okay with what was going on. Knowing him for this long, you knew this wasn’t what he’d wanted either. No one could have expected that it would come to this. He’d gotten more of his toes cut off, but of course the man didn’t tell you or anyone else about it. You’d just figured that out on your own.
But while you’d followed the cycle of abuse Izzy was going through, you witnessed the crew also notice it. The first mate was also starting to break, but this time more visible, and it hurt more to watch. The crew tried helping him, but even then Izzy pretended he was fine, having his mind set on you. And you knew he was pretending because after that, he would join you. You’d find yourself with him beside you, drinking or smoking a cigarette. Sometimes you wouldn’t talk, just pass a bottle back and forth in a comfortable silence. If you were lucky, these moments made you almost forget how horrible each and every day was. You were both suffering, but at least not alone.
“I’m going to tell him.” The first mate said, breaking the silence that had been surrounding the crowsnest. “Tell him what?” You asked, turning to look at the dishevelled man. “That the atmosphere is poisoned. I can’t keep watching the crew suffer, you.” Izzy said, silencing himself by taking a longer swig from the bottle. Your brows furrowed, worried for Izzy. “He’s not going to take it well…” You sighed, crossing your arms for warmth. “I do not care. Stay somewhere away from him tomorrow.” He said, you sure he’d almost added a ‘please’ at the end, but decided against it at the last second. Your mouth opened but closed soon after, only giving him a nod and a silent hum as a reply. Too exhausted to argue against him.
And that you did, avoided leaving the sleeping space you’d found for yourself. Avoided getting up until the worry over Izzy had gotten over the heavy feeling of staying still and avoiding seeing anyone. The sound of someone speaking rang from the main deck, getting you to head over there. Though, you didn’t quite make it in time. The sound of a pistol being fired stopped you dead in your tracks, a horrified shiver running down your spine the second a familiar voice groaned in pain. Only the gush of wind from the door being flung open gaining your focus back. Blackbeard marched through the threshold, stopping momentarily as his eyes landed on you, before walking past with his shoulder hitting yours rather harshly.
Your breath hitched in your throat the second after, the feeling only growing worse when you peeked at what had gone down on deck. Izzy laid near the door, curled around his leg. You could feel tears welling up, a familiar feeling but this time something in your chest burned worse than before. You wanted to go and help him but as if your legs had decided against it, and without much of any feeling you retreated back to your sleeping quarters. A place where you’d be spending multiple days, horrified of leaving.
You’d only creep around at night, those times when sleeping didn’t feel like an option anymore. When you’d slept for long enough that every time you were able to close your eyes, you would wake up again not even an hour later. And those times during the day when you were awake, you couldn’t hear Izzy’s commands echo in the ship, assuming he must have been hit in a vital spot. He was gone, and you wanted to go with him. You hadn’t even realised how dear he’d become, not that he hadn’t been before. But before now, you hadn’t seen him as a comforting type of persona. More of a closer friend you got along better than anyone else, but you blamed that on the way he usually treated the crew. Not letting them see the person he was under the title of the first mate.
Time passed like this rather quickly, the sense of time fading away rather fast. You’d eat small amounts of food whenever you felt like it, swallowing it down with some rum. You didn’t know if the crew had noticed your now total absence, and you didn’t care. The thought of Izzy being dead shook every bone and muscle in your body.
You could vaguely remember a night when the ship had swayed worse than usual. Like a never ending storm was over it, doing everything in its power to sink the wretched thing. But that didn’t make any sense, or it wouldn’t have in the past. The more you thought of it, the more sense it made that Blackbeard would have lost it by now. And a part of you accepted it, the fact that this could have been the night the ship sunk, and there was nothing you could do about it. But by some miracle, it didn’t. Because by the early hours of the morning, the sea was calm once again and the ship was mostly intact.
You wouldn’t have bothered to go check on the crew, and you didn’t, but something else got your attention. A familiar voice that called for you by name a couple of times, though as familiar as the sound was, their voice sounded strained. Oddly enough it sounded like Izzy, which got you to sit up just before a knock came from the door. You wanted to answer but your mouth was dry, nor did you have the energy to speak up much. “You in there?” He sounded a little tipsy, though when did he not. The first mate pushed the door open, revealing the man to you. He was leaning on a crutch, other leg missing, now replaced by a peg made of a table leg. You bit your inner lip, at a loss for words. How was he alive? You’d heard him get shot and been assured that he was gone. Your mind raced, not even noticing the hint of worry through his tired expression. The man looked dishevelled as ever, yet he’d come looking for you. “You shit, I went out on a limb for you and once I came back you were nowhere to be found. I thought you were dead.” He murmured while closing the door and limping to sit next to you. You made space for him on the small bed, exhausted enough that you didn’t feel like standing up.
You wanted to pretend like you were fine, to tell him ‘you told me to stay away, so I did’, but none of those words could make it out of you before the tears that had welled up earlier started streaming down your cheeks. Due to the blur in your vision that caused, you weren’t able to see his expression. But you did feel the hand placed on your shoulder. “I thought you were dead.” You ended up whispering, lowering your head. His hold got a little tighter after that. “When’s the last time you ate something?” Izzy asked, sliding his hand down your arm as his eyes searched the small room you’d spent your days in. “When did you?” You asked, wiping your eyes before grabbing a half empty bottle from under the covers. To that Izzy only gave you a displeased hum, turning to look at the bottle. “You know, we got it handled. It’s going to be alright from now.” He added after, a hint of sorrow flashing on his face before he hid it for your sake. He’d never seen you in such condition, but now that he was back he wouldn’t leave until those words were true. That everything would be alright. You took a swig from the bottle, gaze turning to Izzy. You were glad that him talking to Edward hadn’t been for nothing, but you had no idea what he meant with ‘handled’. The rum had cleared your throat a little, words slightly more clear this time. “What do you mean ‘handled’.” Izzy looked a little troubled, but knew you deserved to know. “Eddie’s gone. We dealt with him last night.” You gave the man a blank stare, not believing what he’d said. In a way you were glad the torture was over, but on the other hand, that’d been your captain for as long as you could remember.
Deep in thought, you didn’t even notice the tears still streaming down your face. You lowered the bottle to between your legs, mouth slightly agape. “Are you..okay?” You asked, lost with what you could have even said at that point. “That doen’t fucking matter right now.” He moved to the edge of the bed after saying that, his eyes still on you. “We’ll get you something to eat and go from there.” You turned to look at him, having not seen the crew in some time and a little frightened of having to face them. But it seemed like Izzy sensed something was off. “The crew? They’re all fucked up, we all are.” He hummed, a hand rising up to your cheek, not making contact until you leaned against it yourself. His touch was a little hesitant, awkward even, yet he still wiped the remaining tears away. “Tough, they have each other. And I know you fucker and the ways you would keep isolating yerself.” He spoke, taking the bottle from you and taking a swig from it himself.
It was rather clear he was hurting alongside you, but at least neither of you seemingly wanted to be alone with the pain. You both knew how it felt to be alone.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States. The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science. SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research. The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network. Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor. Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. Gary’s radio career stretches back some 34 years including 26 at the ABC. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. He was part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and became one of its first on air presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth. The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually. However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage. Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently. StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016. Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

Hi Fai, I know it‘s evil to ask you these questions bc your worldbuilder brain might go brrrrr, but if there WAS an Atlantis, I assume it would have turtle yokai? Do u think the fact that they mostly stay underwater allow some gigantism?
But my actual question; would there ONLY be underwater yokai? I mean, Gale can breathe underwater (probably? It‘s saltwater I mean, I think you mentioned it would fuck up his skin after a while in tfts?) but if they were to visit there, could Draxum use some sort of spell or air bubble to come, like in that one Bojack Horseman underwater episode? Or would he have to keep both hooves on the boat/other side of the portal, while Donnie can keep his eyes open for any billionaire submarines
(Hypothetically, apart from the fact that Draxum obviously wouldn’t ever let Gale go there alone, I mean)
Also, entirely unrelated, if the doth cast was dropped into a beach episode how would that go? Would Gale turn into a horror movie creature? I think that would make him healthy, unbothered, moisturized
(pls don’t feel obligated to give super detailed answers or any at all, I‘m just really curious about your ideas relating that)
Love!!
You're right, you are evil. 💕
That would depend on where Atlantis is in this universe. While, most likely, Plato was using Atlantis completely metaphorically and was not referring to any historical civilization in particular, there's still a number of places proposed that he could have been talking about. The very name Atlantis implies that it was located in the Atlantic, and Plato describes it as being located "in front of the mouth which you Greeks call the pillars of Hercules." (The Strait of Gibraltar-the channel in between Spain and Morocco, if you're bad at geography) Furthermore, Atlantis is also stated to be huge, Plato says it's really more of a continent, "larger than Libya and Asia together." (to my understanding, they used 'Libya' to refer to all of Africa outside of Egypt at the time)
It sounds...weirdly like he's describing the Americas. "a confederation of kings, of great and marvelous power," yeah, there were absolutely ancient American societies that grew very large and could be considered to rival kingdoms.
Except, you know, even though we know now that Africa used to be all snuggled up in between the Americas, that scale of 'used to' is measured in millions of years. Loooooong before anything resembling modern humans existed, and certainly long before we had any form of oral history we could use to pass the knowledge down. People came to the Americas the other way, from what is now Russia to Alaska, or by island-hopping the Pacific. And while Europeans absolutely did cross over to the Americas before Columbus, they mostly did this farther north. Where, you know, there was Iceland to stop at. And Greenland not too far from that. And it was a physically shorter distance from the coast of Iceland to Canada. And, important to note, this was estimated to have happened during the Viking Age, roughly a thousand years ago. Plato wrote this in 360 BCE, and claimed that Atlantis rose and fell 9000 years before his time, (though apparently he might have meant months, which would make it 750 years) I don't know much about ships but I think I can say with some certainty that absolutely no one had the technology to sail from Gibraltar across the Atlantic to hit the shores of West Virginia in, at the very latest, 1000 BCE. And even less likely that Athens would have particular beef with these people.
Of course, there's always the possibility that Plato's understanding of where Atlantis is (if there was even a historical equivalent to Atlantis at all) was misunderstood or mistranslated over the years. It's very possible that the island nation he spoke of was inside the Mediterranean-likely, even, considering the tectonic activity in many areas. We already know that Malta is merely the top part of a much greater island that has since sank below sea levels. And Greece itself is well-known for its volcanic activity-literally, it's a bunch of islands formed from the nonsense of the Aegean Sea Plate, it can't not have tons of volcanic activity. There were absolutely small island nations that exploded and were completely destroyed by Pele stretching her legs in ancient history. Hell, we have a pretty good candidate for what a Greek Atlantis might have been-
This is the island of Thera. You see that bay in the middle, with the bit in the middle not quite breaking the surface?
That's the volcano.
It literally destroyed itself. Civilization on the island was wiped out, some people survived and came back to see what they could retrieve and bury their dead but it remained unoccupied for a few more centuries. It caused earthquakes and tsunamis that destroyed settlements in the surrounding islands and as far away as Crete, causing 'apocalyptic rainstorms' in Egypt.
This happened around 1600 BCE, so while neither dates match, considering the imprecise nature an estimate on that scale would have in Plato's time, it's very possible that he was referring to the destruction of Thera.
If a Yokai Atlantis did exist somewhere around Greece, or somewhere around Italy where there's also a lot of that nonsense, it would likely built upon a now-submerged island. Maybe even get some coral reef activity going on? 'Googles something' Okay no, apparently coral reefs aren't very common in the Mediterranean. I guess it's too cold? You don't really think of Greece or Italy being cold, but compared to the waters around the Philippines and Indonesia I guess it is. Well, the map in Wikipedia shows some coral reefs off the coast of Sicily, plus we're playing with magic here so I'm saying it could happen.
And that would be sick. Like, sooooo many possibilities for aquatic Yokai. How their city is set up, their architecture and culture. How they communicate with each other, with other Yokai.
It would be pretty unlikely for gigantism to occur there though. I know we talked in the doth comments about how the difference in gravity underwater allows animals to grow absolutely huge without putting their bodies under such immense strain, but that's only half the equation. The other half is why they would need to.
Animals don't just evolve for no reason. I mean, sometimes weird mutations do occur spontaneously and end up getting bred into the species because it isn't detrimental enough to impact their survivability, (this is actually what happened with humans and why we can be vitamin C deficient, we lost the gene that handles producing it and it just straight-up wasn't an issue until we moved out of sub-Saharan Africa because we were living in the tropics with so much vitamin C-rich foods available) but if something's not broke they don't fix it. In this scenario, in a coral reef ecosystem or neritic zone, there would be little reason for gigantism because they wouldn't need to conserve calories so much-they have plenty of food available, and they'll have plenty of food tomorrow. They might get bigger, but there would be no reason to become truly giant. Getting big might cause more issues than it's worth if the waters are shallower, (it's my understanding that the Mediterranean isn't particularly deep on average, and this Yokai settlement would be built on a seamount and would be closer to the surface anyway) and would be hard to maneuver. Plus they can upset the food chain by becoming too big and consuming too much, which would cause a collapse and kill them anyway. Just too much of a risky move for evolution to take.
(of course, we're talking about a magical world where humans can be crossed with goats and then can go on to give turtles depression, so it's not out of the question that the mutation itself can give people gigantism but let's stick to science for now)
But as cool as that is, I know that isn't what you're asking for, so let's move to the other locational option.
So. In the Atlantic, but before you hit the Americas. What's there?
Uh...not really a whole lot.
Like, there are some islands and seamounts, but nothing compared to the Pacific. Someone smarter than me can explain how that works with tectonics and why so many islands arose within the Ring of Fire, but if I go down that Wikipedia rabbit hole I'll have written a dissertation on this. Basically, the Atlantic Ocean is pretty deep, and it just kind of...stays deep. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is still on average about a thousand feet below sea level, so even the high points are barely breaking the photic zone.
And the problem is, there at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, is that there's no sunlight. And you kind of need sunlight for a viable ecosystem-like, even if you're a carnivore, what you're preying on is probably an herbivore. Even if it's not, there's an herbivore at some point in the chain-and the plants it eats needs sunlight. So down at the bottom of the sea, where no light penetrates, they have to subsist on what floats down there or go to shallower waters to eat.
A lot of deep-sea creatures live off of marine snow, which is that shit that floats down I mentioned earlier-dead things, phytoplankton, and literal shit. These guys actually tend to get smaller in the deep sea-predation is much rarer down there-to reduce the amount of food they need to sustain their bodies. And a lot of them are hermaphrodites literally just because sexing is hard and they don't have the energy to fuck around finding one of the right sex.
The guys who travel to shallow waters for food, like our friends the colossal and giant squid, they tend to exhibit gigantism because the body becomes more efficient at processing and storing food the bigger it gets.
That's what this girl was doing when she was caught. She'd come to shallow waters and was chowing down on a toothfish she'd pilfered from their line. (she was already very close to death, deep sea creatures like this are adapted for high water pressure and low temperatures and don't fare well if they swim too close to the surface) So they do have to put themselves in danger to feed, and have to eat a lot to fuel their giant body. But they only have to make this trip every couple of years or so. The rest of the time homegirl was just floating and vibing in the deep sea, not doing much of anything to conserve that last meal. Their size also makes them quite able to defend themselves, and threatening enough that most predators won't bother.
(just to note, this beautiful lady was estimated to be about 10 meters long when they pulled her up-33 feet in freedom units. And her beak was significantly smaller than the beaks we've found before, implying that she wasn't even fully grown. These things are massive)
So how would that translate to deep-sea Yokai? Well, I think it would be really hard for intelligent Yokai to exist down there at all. Not to say it can't happen, but our big brains are very resource-intensive. Like, that's the whole reason we eat meat while other apes are mostly herbivores, our big brains needed more energy. (generally herbivores, they eat insects and will eat small game if they can get their hands on it, but that's true for most herbivores) And the combination of needing more fuel for our big brains and having the capacity to be bored would greatly interfere with the 'just vibing' method of survival and force them to be more active-which would require more calories, and thus the problem snowballs. They'd probably be blind, since there's no light down there. They also probably wouldn't be nearly as active as the Yokai we see, since moving their giant bodies and doing things and socializing would take so much energy.
Unless they can get their energy from like, geothermal heat or something? That might work. We're talking about magical creatures after all, it has to make sense but that doesn't mean it has to be realistic.
But generally, for deep-sea giant Yokai to work, they'd need to be migratory and return to shallower waters quite frequently to eat, which begs the question of why they don't just stay in those shallower waters and stop being so giant since they're already there all the time.
Or maybe they just have their own little greenhouses at the top of their city like these dudes:

After last week I'm keeping my expectations low but remain hopefully optomistic. A character hanging off a cliff seems like a pretty big cliffhanger for me lol
I hope your day gets better and take a good rest tonight! Thanks for being a bright spot in this fandom and I love your blog!
Yeah, same. I'm trying to go into this episode level-headed. I'm reading spec and I'm definitely thinking about a lot of scenarios that could play out, but I'm cautious to not expect too much for 8a anymore.
They might have planned all the big Bathena episodes in 8a, because I just read somewhere that Angela is shooting a movie in 2025. So it might have to do with sheduling. This will leave more time for the rest of the mains in 8b.
Next to that, Buck only just broke up with Tommy and it was heavily hinted at that he would start exploring his bisexuality. Eddie is only at the beginning of his journey to find joy. So maybe they have the plan to get back to their stories in 8b and flesh them out.
But in order for that to happen they need the audience to think about the possibility of Buddie. To do that I would love to see something more concrete in Thursday's episode. 🤞🤞🤞
I have seen too many signs in the show itself screaming their story is about to begin, so I'm still in the boat and I will be until the ship sails, but it would be really nice to see some progress in 8x08. How great would it be to go into the hiatus filled with positivity?
Thanks for the wishes and the lovely compliment.❤️🫂 The latest negativity about the episode and the whole Tommies situation has really done a number on me. I'll be happy when hiatus is here to get some rest to refill my batteries.
As for now?
Well, I'm not replying to any of the doom posts in my ask box. Sorry to all the Nonnies who are dropping them in there. But I just don't agree with so much of it. I appreciate your thoughts and opinions, but maybe it would be better if you posted them on your own blog? That way you could find people who think the same and agree with you.
I like talking about the positive side of 911 and this fandom, so I'll mainly be replying to those asks and the occassional negative ones if I find them interesting for a certain reason. Sorry guys, but all the negativity is really wearing me down right now.
I'm also planning to go to bed early tonight, so I'll hopefully feel better in the morning.
Hope you have a lovely day! 😋

More fic covers | More fic recs
I mentioned I made fic cover in a recent post and it reminded me that I'd meant to make one for SJTrinity's Band of Brothers fic: Under Thunder and Rain which is THE Webgott fic, as far as I'm concerned. I've reread it something like five time in the past three months, it's ridiculous. You should read it to.
More about my thought process under the cut, with some spoilers.
So, the entire fic is amazing, of course, but the scene that keeps standing up in my mind is the one in chapter 4, where David is about to sail away on the Tusitala and Joe tries to convince him not to. I love this scene, the vulnerability in both of them, the fact that they find each other, the fact that Joe doesn't realize that it's him David was looking for in the sea. (I know David compares himself to the Shark from the Frisco chapter, but to me his fight to catch said shark is also an excellent parallel of the way he constantly has to reel Joe in and then give him some slack before he breaks the line in his struggle.)
All this to say: I had to have the Tusitala on the cover, if only because if this boat could talk it would be able to tell the tale of how Joe and David finally stop struggling and come together for good. The rain, of course, is a reference to the title and the poem David writes Joe in chapter 5, but I still wanted a bright blue sky as the background because I feel like the vivid and peaceful color are a good contrast to the way they struggle to find their way to one another (and also it reminds me of Episode 10 of BOB, where the color is back in the world and it feels like everything should be alright, but Easy is still losing men and none of them is free of the weight of the war.
The title and author name being on pieces of paper is, of course, a nod to Joe's box full of David's letters and notes, which is also featured against the title card. I wanted watercolor of a bag of groceries for the upper left corner, to further reference that first note and the fact that we don't know how significant it is until the end of the story, because Joe keeps all his cards fucking close to the chest, even if he also betrays himself in his struggle.
(Full disclosure, on my latest rereads the bits that caught my brain were
the time David asks Joe if his future wife does have a smile to die for and Joe says "yeah, it's a great smile. Drives me nuts." While running a finger over David's lips
"He wouldn't add or take away a single thing, and the people who read that book would know how fucking lucky he had been, how he had fought against it and gotten it anyways, this symphony of a life.")
Unfortunately, I couldn't find any graphic on Canva that fit the style of the rest of the cover, so I got a pastry instead. I picked the croissant because, while not extremely sweet for a delicatessen, it's very buttery, and, well: "Copious amounts of sugar and butter clearly loosened him in a way even sex couldn't achieve, because when David came and stood beside him by the stove, Joe threw an arm around his shoulder and bumped their heads together, then playfully tried to wrestle him off his feet." which I feel is also a delightfully deep insight into Joe in general.
And last but not least: the transparent text is the last note David writes Joe in the fic, standing in as the last page of Joe's unwritten book of them.

Hi. Hope you are doing ok. How are your pets?
I just wonder if you have ever watched House M. D, it's a medical series, but the main characters have a codependent sometimes bordline toxic (if it's even the right word) relationship that kinda reminded me of Hannigram.
(The show itself is actually hilarious and has a lot of malpractice but also is heavy at times)
Anyway, if you're not interested - no worries. You may just ignore the ask
Hi! I'm actually not doing very well, but I'll make a separate short post about it later. Thank you very much for the rec - I always welcome such asks and I save all the recs! Granted, by the time I watch them, I usually can no longer find the ask, so it goes unanswered. The latest things I watched and loved are Black Sails and Devil Judge.
In this case, I did watch House M.D. and I loved it! It's a brilliant show with brilliant acting. I loved the plots, the characters, and of course I was a big fan of the relationship between House and Wilson. The co-dependency, the jealousy, it was right up my alley. The show began to feel tiresome to me in the latest two seasons, even though it preserved a high level of quality, but it remained enjoyable and touching. I loved the moments between House and Wilson in the last season and I adored the finale. I do wish it was a little more powerful and dramatic - it felt less so than, for instance, the episodes with Amber's death, even though the ideal set-up was right there. But the idea of House foresaking everything just to share the time Wilson has left, to leave with him - it was so wonderfully bitter-sweet and in-character because in the end, it all came down to the two of them.

If Ruby is still depressed in v10 (if it, yknow, happens) but just being communicative and healthy about it, I'll forgive v9.
If she's back to normal and they really did resolve depression on the level of a suicide attempt with 'she's ok now because the afterlife gave her a pep talk' I will tear and bite
Yeah what even (if anything) is going on with Volume 10 nowadays? I've been out of the loop for a while and yet it simultaneously feels like I haven't missed anything...
I personally will not be retroactively absolving Volume 9, even if Volume 10 knocks it out of the water. I've been playing that game for years: "Well, maybe if they finally do this, that, and the other thing we'll have a cohesive narrative!" Yeah, that ship has sailed. They needed to start that work back in Volume 6, Volume 7 at the latest, and things have just consistently gotten worse instead. In this age of full season drops and crazy fast release dates, I'm continually reminded that RWBY is an episode-by-episode show that, whether for creative purposes or commercial, has always taken its time. That produces a very different viewing experience and, for me at least, it means that what we get feels like it has more weight, simply by virtue of existing as the only new RWBY content for a significant, set amount of time. Just like it can be frustrating to hear fans dismiss literal years of worry over bumbleby because they finally kissed in Volume 9, dismissing the horribly handled suicide allegory after 9-ish month of sitting with it because our hypothetical Volume 10 might make something of it doesn't work for me. Yes, there's always something to be said for giving stories time to capitalize on ideas, but we're still left with the impact of those choices now. Far more significantly, I feel like I have a good sense of when a story simply needs more time to flesh out a complex idea (the 2nd season of Good Omens immediately comes to mind) as well as when the issue is indeed a matter of "This is a complex, as of yet unresolved conflict that viewers may not personally like, but that doesn't make it badly written" (again, Good Omens). RWBY, unfortunately, is neither of those things. The first half is a writing disaster and they've consistently shown that they can't pull it together in the second half.

honestly, the burgeoning ruidus plot really took the wind right out of the c3 characters' sails with respect to inter-party character development
and this has affected ships too. like, i'm sure given enough time and space, imogen and laudna's relationship could have been something more rather than the fluff we have now and same might even apply to other characters
wishful thinking, but i hope post-c3, whatever campaigns we get are a little more grounded and focused on exploring exandria, feel like there hasn't been enough of that
Hey anon,
I've said as much but while I agree that the structure of this campaign has worked against the party relationships, I think the issues I see with that particular relationship are tied to character creation and lack of discussion out of game because again, shorter and more tightly plotted campaigns and mini-series achieve more developed romances all the time.
I am also to be honest a little frustrated for two reasons. The first is that it felt like when I criticized the pacing of the campaign earlier on the broad response was "GIVE IT TIME" and "ugh not everything will be C2" and now, when I have made my peace with that and am enjoying what quieter moments we get and focusing on what this campaign is bringing (lore, culmination of longstanding plot) there is infinite whining about how this silly plot [the entire fucking point of this campaign] is getting in the way of characters talking. Like, we have actually had a number of good conversations and quieter scenes although I think it's been hard to get anything romantic; the back half of latest episode was a good example that allowed for those deeper conversations, and it's one of several openings lately, and like. If the players are feeling rushed and talked over, while they cannot stop the plot they are allowed to say that and say "hey we REALLY need a breather episode."
The second is that again I don't really get why people come in to try to give me the like...reasonable, moderate opinion, or defend a bad take on anon, because I tend to be very unwelcoming to it.
I do, fundamentally, think Imogen and Laudna's relationship is so weak because the players either didn't prep the backstory enough or are not conveying it, and I suspect it's the former. I gave multiple examples of miniseries or other character relationships; like, again to bring up C2 but the three pre-existing groups within that, of which two were really acquaintances (Fjord and Jester had only known each other a few weeks; Veth and Caleb were dependent on each other but had also only been together a few months and really knew very little about each other) felt more realized from episode 1. The Ring of Brass, the Circle of Needle and Thread, the family of stoats in the current D20 season or the Rocks family in A Crown of Candy, honestly the restaurateurs in the Elder Scrolls Blackwood three-shot are all groups that came in and made their relationships crystal clear and full within the first 4 hours of gameplay if not sooner; none of these groups were afforded more than a fraction of the hundreds of hours Imogen and Laudna have had, plot-heavy though those hours might be. If Imogen and Laudna had been recent roommates in Jrusar, then I think it would be fair to blame the pace of the plot at least in part in the lack of development of their relationship, but the fact is this is an exceptionally weak grounding that should have been in place before the first episode even began, and which could have been fixed after the fact by again, like two hours of intense discussion in a coffee shop. The campaign structure isn't helping; but it's not, in my opinion, the cause.

ofmd rant under the cut.
i'll be honest with everyone here. i haven't actually watched the latest episodes. i forgot to filter out the spoiler tags and saw a couple of posts about izzy, and even without watching the episode i'm so fucking angry.
so here's the bit where i jump ship, i think.
honestly even before this i'd found s2 pretty disappointing. i think it being rushed really diminished its quality and it just felt odd to me. predominantly i felt like ed & izzy & their relationship was really not developed and explored enough and they shouldn't have made it so dark with all the toe cutting if they weren't willing to put the fucking effort in to resolve that which they really didn't.
but yeah izzy dying is the last fucking straw for me. honestly i haven't been invested in stede/ed since my first watch of season 1. but izzy is imo the most interesting character with the most interesting relationships. yknow i would've rather they took more time with his arc because it did feel rushed and unrealistic and like they just brushed everything edizzy under the rug but fuck me, a rushed arc is better than no arc, than a complete stop because the character's fucking dead.
so. i'm not intending to watch s3. and i probably won't participate in this fandom a whole lot more, except for hopefully a series of fics in abt a month or so. and i'm really disappointed because i think season 1 deserved so much better than the second season it got. izzy deserved so much better. but. we move. & i never finished black sails, so i've got a new queer pirate show to watch.
