Today and Tuesday are the final opportunities to see my solo exhibition "What the Crows Brought Me" at ARTHOUSE Gallery. I'll be picking the work up on Wednesday to bring home to my San Francisco studio and shortly thereafter shipping out pieces that were sold to buyers in outlining areas. I am so grateful for all the encouraging feedback, the many crow stories shared and the camaraderie I experienced from beginning to end. New work and more shows to be announced very soon! What the Crows Brought Me, a solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE GALLERY 1021 R Street in Sacramento CA Open Monday, July 4th 10 a.m. – 2 p.m and Tuesday, July 5th 10 a.m. – 4 p.m #whatthecrowsbroughtme #sacramento #sacramentogallery #showaboutcrows #crowfriends #assemblageexhibition #foundobjectart #diannehoffmanart #Rstreetcorridor #sacramentoartshow #diannehoffmanart #assemblageartist #arthouseonr (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfjhptELSx9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The last days to visit my solo exhibition "What The Crows Brought Me" in Sacramento are upon us. This show has really opened so many doors for me to learn more about these fascinating birds and the people they resoundingly resonate with. Five of the 24 pieces in the show have been claimed by California collectors from as far North as Eureka and as far South as Los Angeles. Remember that all art sales for this exhibition are processed directly through me. You can reference the 'Available Work' tab of my website and reach out with any inquiries. Thank you for your continued interest and support! This is the last of the 21 new pieces created since March 2022 for my solo show currently on exhibit in Sacramento. It was a genuine delight to see them all meticulously hung and spaced with great care on the white walls interfacing with Crow lovers and assemblage art enthusiasts, many of whom had come a great distance in the central valley summer heat to engage with each piece on a personal level. It was an honor to see and meet every person I was fortunate to speak with. The journey to or from a destination is referenced as "the way the crow flies" typically when that distance is measured in a straight line. The physical completion of this show did not necessarily manifest as a straight line for me but my vision and actualization of the concept most certainly did. I am grateful to curators @artbyjuned and @sarahwhyte52 for offering me the opportunity and trusting in my professional integrity to deliver a show worthy of the lovely space at @arthouseonr. I've been asked recently how I know that the birds that frequent my backyard and neighborhood in San Francisco are in fact Crows rather than Ravens. Two big differences between Crows and Ravens are their size and sounds. Ravens are the larger of the two, with wingspans around 45 inches. Crows have smaller wingspans, with bodies around the size of pigeons. To distinguish a crow from a raven listen to their calls. Crows most often have an even caw, caw sound, while Ravens have a deeper, throatier, croaking call. Also, Ravens have fluffier feathers around their head and especially at their throat. They also have thicker beaks than Crows, with more of a curve to the end. A Crow's tail feathers are all fairly even in length, so their tails will have a fan-shaped appearance during flight. Ravens have differing lengths of tail feathers, so their tails appear diamond-shaped. Typically, Ravens soar, while Crows flap and Crows usually walk, while Ravens will do a combination of walking and hopping. While there are plenty of Ravens that soar the cityscape of San Francisco, it is a Murder of Crows that wake me up every morning and have become the namesakes for my upcoming solo show opening THIS SATURDAY EVENING in Sacraemnto, CA...... For my upcoming solo show, this is ten of twenty and is set within a vintage sewing drawer to abstractly relay a line from a specific nursery rhyme about counting crows. This is also perhaps my favorite. The camera does not capture the subtle details but to see it in person you would be transported to a sun bleached, carefree afternoon shared between youngsters at a water's edge with toy boats and tadpoles....quietly observed by a curious murder of crows. For this new series of assemblages relating to crows, I forced my figurative imagination to work more abstractly than what I am typically comfortable with. Abstract art has a unique voice that permits both the artist and the viewer a sense of expressive freedom. Despite its spontaneous appearance, it can possess distinctive structure. Crows would not recognize an object they may pick up in the same manner as I would. By placing small random items that I thought a clever bird could carry in their beaks, I attempted to convey a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create compositions that may exist with a degree of independence from visual references of the human eye. Swipe left for close up detail. I’ve been invited to present a solo show this June at ART HOUSE gallery in Sacramento titled “What the Crows Brought Me”. Through a series of staged vignettes a story is told about a flock of crows and the sacred treasures they offer as gifts of gratitude. Ten of the twenty new pieces for this series are set within vintage sewing drawers to abstractly relay a line from a specific nursery rhyme about counting crows. Eight for a Wish, 14.5” x 5” x 3.5”, $425 June 11 - July 5, 2022 What the Crows Brought Me - A solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Sacramento, CA Save the date for the Opening Reception: Saturday June 11th 5-8pm #whatthecrowsbroughtme #crows #corvids #giftsofgratitude #foundobjects #reliquaries #eightforawish #murderofcrows #smartbirds #artistmuse #assemblage #assemblageartist #assemblageart #diannehoffmanart #arthousegallery #sacramentoartshow #savethedate #sacramentogallery #crowgifts #soloshow #foundobjectart #creativereuse #sewingdrawer #makeawish #sacredofferings #foundobjects #itsthelittlethingthatcount (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeMCcqxlO2S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“How Long is a Piece of String” is a colloquial, often humorous, rhetorical question used as a response to a question such as "How long will it take?" or "How big is it?" when the length or size is unknown, infinite, variable, or relative. The phrase is used to indicate that the responder does not know the answer nor cares to guess but would rather offer this particular facetious question as a reply. As I was creating this piece using 4 different scraps of found string captured in glass test tubes outlining a tiny crow’s skull, I had in mind a favorite song by contemporary folk singer Alena Diane from her 2006 Pirate’s Gospel album. In it she sings about a paper bag her grandmother kept and labeled as ‘Pieces of String Too Small to Use’. The following lyric says “.....but her Autumn leaves are now the dust…and those summer winds did blow her hair…and now she’s pieces of string too small to use….what’s left is pieces of string too small to use.” I invite you to listen to this beautiful haunting song by clicking the Pieces of String tab in my linktr.ee How Long is a Piece of String, 18” x 14” x 2”, $575 June 11 - July 5, 2022 What the Crows Brought Me - A solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Sacramento, CA Save the date for the Opening Reception: Saturday June 11th 5-8pm #whatthecrowsbroughtme #crows #corvids #giftsofgratitude #foundobjects #reliquaries #piecesofstringtosmalltouse #howlongisapieceofstring #murderofcrows #putabirdonit #smartbirds #artistmuse #assemblage #assemblageartist #assemblageart #diannehoffmanart #arthousegallery #sacramentoartshow #savethedate #sacramentogallery #crowgifts #soloshow #foundobjectart #creativereuse #foundobjects #itsthelittlethingthatcount #testtubes #crowskull #skull #rhetoricalquestion #alenadiane (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeJl3nIp39e/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There are the seven wonders of the world, the seven dwarfs, seven days in a week, and seven colors in the rainbow. There are seven swans a-swimming, seven notes on a musical scale, and seven deadly sins. But if you notice seven crows in your vicinity, it’s said to be a sign of pending travel or moving away from where you live. Both of these possibilities strongly appeal to me and add to the long list of reasons why seven is often regarded as a secret lucky number. Seven for a Secret Never Told, 12.5” x 5” x 4”, $425 June 11 - July 5, 2022 What the Crows Brought Me - A solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Sacramento, CA Save the date for the Opening Reception: Saturday June 11th 5-8pm #whatthecrowsbroughtme #crows #corvids #giftsofgratitude #foundobjects #sevenforasecretnevertold #murderofcrows #smartbirds #artistmuse #assemblage #assemblageartist #assemblageart #diannehoffmanart #arthousegallery #sacramentoartshow #savethedate #sacramentogallery #crowgifts #soloshow #foundobjectart #creativereuse #sewingdrawer #luckyseven #foundobjects #itsthelittlethingthatcount #seven #secrets #crowsecrets #secretlifeofcrows (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeBol9HrK4J/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Crows are very social and have a tight-knit family. They roost in huge numbers (in the thousands) to protect themselves. Their distress calls bring other crows to their aid, as crows will defend unrelated crows from predators like red-tailed hawks, horned-owls, and raccoons. A group of crows is called a “murder.” There are several different explanations for the origin of this term, mostly based on old folk tales and superstitions. Birds of a Feather, 18” x 18” x 4”, $650 June 11 - July 5, 2022 What the Crows Brought Me - A solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Sacramento, CA Save the date for the Opening Reception: Saturday June 11th 5-8pm #whatthecrowsbroughtme #crows #corvids #giftsofgratitude #foundobjects #reliquaries #birdsofafeather #flockofcrows #murderofcrows #putabirdonit #smartbirds #artistmuse #assemblage #assemblageartist #assemblageart #diannehoffmanart #arthousegallery #sacramentoartshow #savethedate #sacramentogallery #crowgifts #soloshow #foundobjectart #creativereuse #foundobjects #itsthelittlethingthatcount #crowfeathers (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd80-nwpS5n/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Crows have a long history as messengers in storytelling because they symbolize wisdom and knowledge. In many stories, crows are considered to be guardians of the dead. They also symbolize adaptability, reciprocity, cleverness, teamwork, psychic abilities, and transformation. I've staged ten of the twenty new pieces for my solo show within vintage sewing drawers to abstractly relay a line from a specific nursery rhyme about counting crows. This one shows a gold chain draining from a faucet into a tiny bottle of Cloxone, an antibiotic used to prevent infections typically given as a drip (intravenous infusion) or as an injection directly into a vein or a muscle. Behind the gold chain is a vintage photograph of 6 young boys stacked on top of each other in a pyramid formation, presumably cheering for this golden potion to make things right. Six for Gold, 10” x 4” x 4”, $425 June 11 - July 5, 2022 What the Crows Brought Me - A solo exhibition by Dianne Hoffman ARTHOUSE Gallery, 1021 R Street, Sacramento, CA Save the date for the Opening Reception: Saturday June 11th 5-8pm #whatthecrowsbroughtme #crows #corvids #giftsofgratitude #foundobjects #reliquaries #sixforgold #murderofcrows #putabirdonit #smartbirds #artistmuse #assemblage #assemblageartist #assemblageart #diannehoffmanart #arthousegallery #sacramentoartshow #savethedate #sacramentogallery #crowgifts #soloshow #foundobjectart #creativereuse #sewingdrawer #vinatagephoto #sacredofferings #foundobjects #itsthelittlethingthatcount (at Arthouse on R) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd3RcMpL5jl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There is a factual flock of crows that has influenced my interest in the concept of this new series for my upcoming solo show in Sacramento. But, I have yet to establish an actual reciprocal relationship with them in where food is rewarded with a bounty of gifted objects. Instead….I regard the countless number of people who have gathered to give me bundles, bags and boxes of collected bits and random materials over the years as my “counted crows” for this project. They too are my attributed muse. So while the show’s story is a fictitious one, it is comes earnestly from genuine gratitude.
