Dragon Age Thoughts: Sabine’s Brat

There was a weird, slow intro to him when I played and I kept expecting there to be a quest involving him at some point but it didn’t happen. Maybe it got cut for time.

Anyway, the thought:

Uncle Gamlen hired Sabine often and Sabine told her kid his father was a noble. Sabine’s brat might be Hawke’s cousin, half brother to Charade.

Sabin claims to be from the town of Lothering, to have grown up with Hawke and to have known Hawke's parents, Malcolm Hawke and Leandra Amell. Sabin further claims to have known Leandra's family, a questionable assertion considering Leandra's family is from Kirkwall and not Lothering. During the Fifth Blight, Sabin fled to the city of Kirkwall and ended up living in Lowtown. He got a job working for Hubert as a miner in the Bone Pit.

In the years since becoming partners in the Bone Pit mining operation, someone has been carrying out raids on their shipments. After investigating for the better part of a year, he will tell you that he finally had a breakthrough in finding who is behind these raids. Sabin, a Fereldan miner, is Brekker's informant, selling information regarding cargo shipment schedules heading to the Bone Pit in order to allow them to be stolen by Brekker's branch of the Coterie. Hubert finds out about it and asks Hawke to interrogate him.

Sabin will agree to cooperate [... and] will then reveal that the next raid will happen tonight, in Dietrich Crossing outside Kirkwall. Hearing this, Hubert proposes Lilley leave immediately to make it there in time. She will offer to dispose of Sabin's dead body on the way out. Hubert agrees and asks Hawke for their opinion.

The Muses: Sonja Hawke

A peacekeeper from a young age, Sonja always excelled at breaking up fights and brokering compromises between her squabbling twin siblings, and the trouble her own elder twin, Garrett often stirs up with his smart tongue. Though she never aspired to any position of power or influence, Sonja never shys or turns away those that seek her counsel or aid. Despite her secret desires for a simpler, even a more traditional sort of life, she can't imagine life without the friends she's made along the way.

thanks to the tincture, he has a reprieve from the tremor in his hands. as he could write for himself and not need to dictate, his usual scribe was excused. this was the last correspondence that he would ever send, and he wanted nothing more than for it to be in his own hand.

I offer my most heartfelt apologies, that I could not divulge this information in person. It has been thirty-five years since my Joining, and, as you can imagine, I appear to be quite the mess. Not that I believe that you care about such things, but I would like to leave you with what you remember and not what I have become. I look the very picture of health, and don’t you forget it.

the very picture of health. he was far from it. black tendrils snaked under his pale skin, creeping up his neck and spreading along the sides of his face. his grey eyes ‒ ringed with dark circles ‒ had turned reflective and lifeless. ghoulish dark spots marked his face, darker and more profound than any bruise.

the old gods whisper, and, sooner or later, all tainted beings come flocking. grey wardens were no exception. try as he may to resist, given enough time, the taint physically starts to affect the brain. not only was he starting to look like a ghoul ‒ he was starting to think and behave like one as well.

First and foremost, know that I love you. You are the strongest and bravest person that I have ever known. Of that, there is no doubt. My baby sister, the Hero of Ferelden! the quill scribbles erratically against the parchment as an unexpected tremor causes his hand to spasm, and he lifts his arm before too much damage can be done. the old warden sets his quill down before resting his elbows on the desk and folding his hands. his fingers remain as seemingly soot-stained as ever, and he rests his forehead against them. after a deep inhale, he feels a stinging in his sinuses as tears well up in his silver-esque eyes, and, before he knows it, a blood-tinged tear spills over and hits the bottom of the parchment. a rare curse escapes him and he blots it away with a handkerchief before sighing. ‘it was an honor to have been one’, he had written, but he wished that he had longer. even if thirty-five years is longer than most grey wardens get. no amount of time truly felt long enough.

he picks up his quill to continue.

If you should find yourself grieving and missing me, light a candle. Fire always has been my thing.

more pink tears patter against the bottom of the parchment, but a smile curls his lips as they fall. after a moment, he wipes them away in the same manner as the first.

I’m going out in a blaze.

the letter completed, ignatius signs his name and gives the ink a moment to dry before rolling it up and sealing it with black wax. after sliding the parchment into a scroll case, ignatius removes the ring that he’s worn ever since he left the circle so many years ago, and the small amell family crest hits the bottom of the case with a quiet thud. then the package is handed off to a trusted warden to deliver to sabine’s hands only, and he’s all set. it was time to head for orzammar. it was time for the long walk.

Tom meet up with the heroes outside the hospital and waited for Monsieur Noir to retrieve the necklace from Vulpes. "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. If I had been quick enough or if I didn't pull her, she would still be alive," Vulpes exclaimed as she cried, not realising that her transformation had already dropped. Monsieur Noir pulled her into a hug and said, "It's alright, it's not your fault Ondine. None of us saw it coming. You are not to blame." This calmed the girl down as they separated. Trixx patted the girl's cheek and reassured that it was not get fault. Ondine thanked them and apologized again, and finally left.

"Claws in," Luka said dropping his transformation and have both kwamis food. He can already feel the tears flow and he can't stop it. He then felt a strong pair of arms hug him from behind. "It's alright, son. The three of you did your best," Tom said in a broken voice as he couldn't stop the tears. Luka returned the hug, feeling hopeless and useless. Plagg and Trixx joined in too, mourning for their dear guardian. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I couldn't save her the first time and even now, I'm always too late," Luka cried as he blamed himself for it all.

Sabine found Kagami crying in the corner. Her heart broke, she bent down and engulfed the quivering girl in a hug. "Mrs. Cheng?" Kagami asked in surprise. "It's alright dear. I know what happened, and I don't blame any of you. You all tried your best," Sabine said in a hoarse voice. Kagami clung to the woman as she cried at her failure. Tikki even joined in as she tried to calm both women. But all together they cried for their sunshine.

Tom, Sabine, Gina, Rolland, Kagami and Luka, all waiting outside the emergency room. The old couple seated across each other with tears as they looked at the door expectantly. The parents were in a silent embrace of tears and heartbreak. Luka stood and leaned against a wall as he looked at the floor with a blank expression. Kagami had her eyes closed to calm her mind as tears continued to flow.

The door opened to their doctor, everyone was on their feet now. The doctor could only look at them with empathy as he uttered the sad news.

Marinette fluttered her eyes to find distressed faces around her. Seeing this she already knew without even having anything to say. "Good to see you, Marinette," she heard someone say from behind. Recognizing the voice, this made eyes tear up again. She turned around to find her friends there, waiting for her.

She immediately got off the hospital bed and jumped into their arms. "Joined the club?" Claude joked as they were in each others arms. This made them all laugh holding each other tighter. "I know this is bad, but I'm glad you're here," Allegra added. "Sorry to be the first to die," Kenya apologized, earning a laugh from the others. "As much as I would've wanted us to be alive together, this could work, too," Lindalee said with a smile. "Does this mean none of you are visiting my grave?" Allan quipped. "I definitely doubt that," Felix replied.

Once they have finally calmed down, they let go. Marinette immediately punched Felix on the arm with all her strength. "Ow! What was that for?" he asked rubbing his arm. "That's for not closing you're eyes when Medusa turned you to stone," she scolded. "Why not a thank you instead?" Felix retorted but was silenced when Marinette kissed his cheek. "How about that instead?" she said with a grin.

"Will you two ever stop flirting when I'm around?" Grim commented from behind. Felix threw an arm over Marinette's shoulder. "You're just lonely," he countered. This made them giggle at his comment. Grim sighed and mumbled something between the lines of, "Annoying little brats." "Is this the thanks I get for waiting since Kenya's death?" Grim asked. "Oh, come on. Lighten up, you know that we appreciate it," Allan said. This made Marinette look at them with wide eyes. "You guys waited for me?" she asked with surprise.

"I asked Grimm to not let me crossover yet, until all of you are safe," Kenya said. "But we all died. I still find it unfair that I was the only one on the floor where I died," Allegra complained. "Yeah, I guess almost all of us died alone. Except for Marinette, she died with doctors and nurses around her," Claude joked. "Well, I always thought we could all be together alive, but I instead we all died together," Lindalee added. "Booooo, then what about me?" Allan said. "You, my friend, are not included because we died together," Felix teased as the six of them clustered together leaving Allan out. "Ouch, hurtful," he said, pretending to be insulted.

"Are you kids done or do you not want to crossover?" Grimm impatiently asked. They nodded excitedly as they held hands and formed a circle around him. "You too, Mr. 'I'm not included in this group,'" Grimm said pointing at Allan. Allan's mouth went ajar at what Grimm said making him unable to move. "Hey, get in here already," Claude said reaching out as he included him in their circle. Allan held onto Claude's and Felix's hands. Grimm the placed the end of his scythe on the floor.

Water started coming out from underneath them as it began to cover them like a sphere. Kenya tightened her grasp on Marinette's and Lindalee's hand as they were covered with the water. Grimm began to chant as the water has concealed them all from the world of mortality;

"Ameles potamos.

Let this water Lethe,

Help you through your cross.

Let your mind be clear,

Of all those things you lost."

From the water is the river of forgetfulness, the seven souls slowly felt their minds clear. Clear from suffering, clear from pain, clear from hate and clear from brief. With this they were calmly brought to the afterlife.

"You kids can open your eyes now," Grim says as he looks around glad to be back. Opening their eyes, they slowly adjust to the light, but once they opened it their smiles reached their eyes. They could see a grassy plain with light breeze blowing, a clear stream flowing with flowers blooming everywhere. "Wait, is that you Grim?" Claude asks with surprise. This made all of their jaws drop, for right in front of them was not the skeleton that had brought them here but a good looking man in a neat black suit with a scythe in hand.

Grim grinned at them saying, "Welcome to the demimonde." Kenya and Lindalee began to run towards the flowers as they giggle along the way. Allan and Claude carried Allegra as they turned to a tree with sweet fruit just waiting to be picked. This left Marinette and Felix, which to their surprise, were still holding hands despite the others breaking free.

"It's beautiful," Marinette breathed. "Very beautiful," Felix replies while looking at her. "Together?" he asks as he brings their joined hands and places a kiss on it. She smiles and places a kiss on the same spot, saying, "Together."

What kind of nightmares do you have? Do you ever dream of your family?

Her breath hitched at the questions present to her by the recruit. Dreams and nightmares – always a topic that comes up for mages, doubly so for mages who are also wardens. A soft hum played on the Amell’s lips as her finger traced the outline of a griffin on her shield, her thoughts culminating.

“I have the usual nightmares you’d expect from someone like me,” she began softly, her gaze still glued down to the Warden heraldry. “Demons with their alluring words and tempting offers; they try to be my friend, show that they’re on my side. They always did that before my Harrowing, back in the Circle. They were concerned about me, at least some of them acted like they were – tell me they don’t trust the Templars and they don’t want me to end up getting killed by them.” 

Amber eyes trailed up to lock with the eyes of the recruit and there was a pang in her heart. Would this be one of the last few things she tells them, were they not to survive their Joining? She’s seen her fair share of recruits lose their lives once the Joining chalice was brought to her lips, but it never dulled the shock and underlying grief that accompanied each death. 

“But listen to me when I say that if you ever encounter a demon in person, do not trust them. Some will act like they you’re friend and they will tempt you, but do not fall for temptation.” The Warden-Commander’s words grew firm, but the words that left her lips following a sigh were softer, gentler. “My apologies. I’m beginning to stall from the questions you asked, am I not?”

Sabine hesitated before continuing, contemplating whether she should reveal to them the nightmares that accompany a warden. They might not even live long enough to… No, it’s better to not tell them…

Approaching the answer to the recruit’s second question, the woman lowered her voice, a bundle of insecurity beginning to grow in her chest. “I’ve… had some dreams about my family, yes.” The mention of her family left her feeling the air in her lungs be drained, wires squeezing out any excess from her throat. “It’s been so long, that I’m afraid that what I see may not be reality. I was the eldest child, and I cannot even remember what some of my younger brothers and sisters looked like. I only remember expressions – what they wore on their faces as templars dragged me from my home in Kirkwall. Sometimes I wonder if it simply just demons trying to deceive me when I dream of my siblings.” 

An apology, then a question. I’m sorry, you said Kirkwall? That is in the Free Marches, correct? 

A soft chuckle, a small release from the tension building in her system and gripping her throat. “Yes, I was born in the Free Marches. However, I was not there for long; the templars took me to the Circle here in Ferelden, and that’s where I have spent most of my life.

“But let’s move past that. I believe I have answered your questions, no? I think it’s time we get everything prepared for the Joining.”
