Imagine the guilt Havers has - like James came all this way, had to find him, had to be there, had to see him and tell him everything they’d never dared speak in wartime.
And then his old CO is ridiculed, pointed and laughed at, different to the other men, just because he wanted to see you. And then he dies.
Havers must think it’s his fault to some extent, maybe to a large one since he isn’t really known after the war (Button House Archives: ‘unknown soldier’), stuck with his own questions and time stolen from him. From them both.
He’s stuck with the regret of not reaching out to James, not finding him first, even leaving him all those years ago without another word said in between.
That sort of guilt is indescribable.

The way nandor takes responsibility, we don't get to see it from any other character in the show and it's not sth we expect to see from a former warlord. He blamed himself for the Sire's escape too even tho it was technically Nadja's fault. Which reminds me, the way he called for a press conference then to handle the situation and the speech he gave was very reminiscent of the way he tried to gather everyone in this episode and make them all work together. Call him dumb all you want, but nandor also knows how to act like a commander and give inspiring speeches. He also knows his way around swords and knives. Which is very hot of him. And he does all of this while looking extremely pretty. So many points in his favor honestly!

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in The X Files (1993) The Post-Modern Prometheus
S5E5
Mulder and Scully travel to a small town after Mulder receives a letter asking for his help in solving a mystery. The townsfolk believe there is a Frankenstein-type monster living in the woods and many claim to have seen him. One of the locals has even created a comic book on the creature, which he's called the Great Mutato. Scully of course thinks it's all nonsense but soon changes her mind when they see what appears to be a hideously deformed man in the woods. The episode is filmed in black and white.
*Chris Owens, who plays the great Mutato in this episode, played the young Cigarette Smoking Man and goes on to play the recurring character of Agent Spender in the series.
