“TV’s brashest 21-year-old talks revealingly about her wild past, her brief engagement, and ‘people who think I’m a bitch,’” the coverline next to a picture of Shannen Doherty reads on a 1992 issue of People magazine. A year later, on another People cover: “Out of Control! These days, Beverly Hills’ hard-partying, check-bouncing bad girl may be going way too far.”

In the ’90s—before a wave of early-aughts tabloids and bloggers like Perez Hilton made a mint lampooning young, female celebrities like Lindsay and Britney and Paris—Shannen Doherty was popular fodder. Drunken nights out, shotgun marriages, fights at the club, court-appointed anger-management classes, and other run-ins with the law were breathlessly chronicled for a celebrity-obsessed public thirsty to see the unraveling of the stars they tuned in to watch every week. Doherty was deemed unhinged, branded a liability. How the media treated her (and Drew Barrymore, too, for that matter) was a template for the years to follow, when such cruelty would become ever more commonplace and, with the dawn of social media, ever more accessible. Doherty was branded a bad girl; she was called difficult, a notoriously loaded term when lobbed at women.

But for teenage me, those were the very labels that made me fiercely love her. They were labels that Brenda Walsh, the character that arguably made Doherty most famous, had already confronted onscreen. When Beverly Hills, 90210 debuted in 1990, I was in junior high and already deeply familiar with Doherty from her roles as Jenny on Little House on the Prairie, Kris Witherspoon (opposite tween dream Chad Allen) on Our House, and as one of the titular mean girls in the seminal 1980s film Heathers. Brenda Walsh (played by a then 19-year-old Doherty) was introduced to audiences as a wide-eyed girl from Minnesota with a stretchy headband, mousy brown hair, and pastel-hued wardrobe who, along with her goody-two-shoes twin brother, Brandon, had been plopped into the decadence and debauchery of LA. “Nobody knows me here—I could be anybody, I could be somebody,” Brenda says to her brother on the show’s first episode as she anxiously considers what to wear on her first day at a school in a city that was definitely not Minneapolis. Beverly Hills, 90210 would dive into taboo topics like AIDS, domestic violence, eating disorders, suicide, and drug abuse, becoming a runaway hit for producer Aaron Spelling. All these years later, the show remains the pinnacle of teen drama, and Brenda its queen. (Let’s face it: The seasons after Spelling booted Doherty from the cast could never measure up, even with the addition of Tiffani Thiessen’s chaos-courting Valerie Malone.)

Over the course of the four seasons that Doherty was on 90210, Brenda would grow and shift, both in her look (along came the bodysuits, high-waist jeans, endlessly imitated dark brown hair with blunt bangs, and that signature knowing smirk) and her identity. We watched her decide to have sex for the first time (an episode that famously raised conservative eyebrows); contend with a pregnancy scare; fight and make up and break up (to the tune of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”) with Dylan; rebel against her parents’ arcane rules; try on new personas (bonjour, Brenda Dubois); get arrested (for protesting animal testing, naturally); and face the aftermath of a best friend’s betrayal. Yet Brenda would also face well-publicized backlash from fans of the show, as people began to conflate the character with Doherty’s off-screen behavior. (There was even a popular ’90s zine called the I Hate Brenda Newsletter.)

Brenda—or was it Shannen?—became the girl people loved to hate. Doherty once said in an interview: “People couldn’t separate me from her, and I got sick of people assuming that I was as naughty and bad as Brenda was. It was all very hurtful.” Though one was fictionalized, they were both up against the complicated pressures of adolescence and wanting to be taken seriously. Both on television and off, Doherty was passionate, she was intense, she was straightforward, she was self-assured, and for all these reasons, she was dismissed and poorly regarded. For those of us navigating our own coming of age, and simultaneously facing harsh judgment from our families and peers, we saw ourselves in Brenda—and, in turn, in Shannen. I know I did.

When the news broke this week that Doherty had died from cancer, prompting an outpouring of social media tributes and Instagram messages from saddened friends, I saw that others felt the same way. Part of the sadness seemed to come from how hard Doherty had fought to live; she’d recently shared on her excellent and refreshingly candid podcast Let’s Be Clear how hopeful she felt about a new course of chemotherapy.

But for many of my fellow Gen X’ers and older millennials, we’d also lost a part of ourselves. We loved Shannen Doherty, we idolized her, but most of all, at some point, we saw ourselves in a version of her. We were all a little wild once; we were all a little difficult. We were all a little Brenda.

brief(ish) bio:

fiorella dondarrion ( born fiorella storm ) is the bastard daughter of the ruling lord of house dondarrion by one of his wife’s wet nurses. her birth caused quite the stir at blackhaven, with rumors claiming that lady dondarrion attempted to smother an infant fiorella in a fit of rage. all of this ongoing drama resulted in her being sent to the capital to be fostered by ser criston and his bride doranah at the knight’s father’s behest. still, this was not exactly the end of fiorella’s woes, as the pair struggled to bond with her in spite of having no surviving children of their own. plus, she was somewhat ostracized by those around her for being a known bastard child. it wasn’t until she was legitimized and became a companion of queen alicent’s children that she began to earn more respect from those around her. prince aegon in particular was said to have been fond of her from the very start. the two were both lost souls pushed to their limits from an early age. thus, they were able to bond over it. aegon found in fiorella what he felt he had no were else; solace. knowing such, fiorella was successfully able to win a young aegon’s heart. the targaryen prince originally wished to marry her, but was pushed to marry his younger sister, helaena, to keep the bloodline pure instead. in order to keep the dondarrions on their side, the greens initially considered betrothing her to aemond, but eventually got away with marrying her to off to an ally of the crown, the older weslar westerling. due to this, she was able to remain in the capital and close to aegon. neither fiorella or aegon were happy within their marriages, but were able to make do by becoming each others lovers in secret. there was a lot of secret rendezvous and passing glances between the two. nevertheless, it wasn’t super difficult for those close to aegon to notice the way he looked at fiorella. by the time the dance commences, fiorella has become aegon’s most trusted ally. it’s believed she had the largest influence on him, often fueling his erratic actions. in truth, she had a way of manipulating most of those around her with her innocent demeanor. however, behind that mask was a thirst for power and the respect she was robbed of as a child. that was her main reason for enamoring aegon, not love. fiorella loved the idea of what aegon could offer her more so than him as a person, whereas he loved the unconditional support and acceptance she had to offer. in spite of all of these efforts though, she is never able to officially wed aegon, even after helaena’s death. instead, she was wed to lanse tyrell iii after aegon perishes. he is the only spouse she had surviving children with.

Anyways the DC canon full names are so generic its like infuriating to me so here are my alternate full names names with some explanations:

S1:

Jake: Jake Kuroda

Meaning: First of all I’m keeping his full name as Jake instead of making it short for Jacob because I just don’t like the look or sound of the name Jacob. But second of all I chose Kuroda because it’s a Japanese surname that means black field (or black rice paddy). I thought it tied back to his association with death and graveyards in season one (lost his grandparents, lost Miriam and Ellie in apocalypse episode, biggest fear was graveyards, has skulls on his clothes, etc).

Tom: Thomas Velasco

Meaning: Velasco comes from the Spanish surname Vela, meaning watchman. I felt like to both fit his past as a spy and his present as team leader, both in seasons one and three.

Ellie: Elliott Gray

Meaning: Elliott fits her best out of all the Ellie names in my opinion (Elizabeth, Elaine, etc). I do like the surname Parker but think Gray more suitable since it ties back to her design and her morally gray nature.

Gabby: Gabrisya Malinowski

Meaning: I don’t hate Nowak as a surname for Gabby but Malinowski is slightly less generic and I think it suits her. It means raspberry and used to describe people who lived near raspberry fields, which both connects to the red in her design and her love for nature. Also I think the inclusion of Mal- in her surname is nice since it hints towards her future status as a villain. Also she’s sweet like a raspberry :) Blorbo from my show.

Miriam: Miriam Foster

Meaning: I actually really like Foster being Miriam’s surname, it’s less on the nose than something like Baker but still hints at how she fosters her skills and how she sort of fostered Jake and Tom (I miss their friendship so much man).

Alec: Alec Çelik

Meaning: Once again I actually like Alex’s surname, it means steel which I feel fits him as a strong villain.

Fiore: Fiorella Ricci

Meaning: Third time in a row; Fiore’s surname doesn’t really have an applicable meaning here but I just really like how it sounds and looks idk. I did consider Orsini (“little bear”, since she’s small and fierce), D’Angelo (“of the angels”, both since she looks innocent and as a tongue-and-cheek nod to her being a villain; also ties back to her being Catholic), or Abbandonato (uncommon surname meaning “abandoned/forsaken”, since she loses all her friends/allies by the end of season one and also since it’s kind of implied that her parents don’t care much for her), but I feel like Ricci sounds and looks the best, meanings aside.

Lill: Lilliana Park

Meaning: Park is a common Korean surname, which fits with my headcanon for Lill, but I chose it mostly because of the English connotation of…a park. And she spends a lot of time in nature and with her Girl Scouts in presumably city or national parks.

Will: William Greene

Meaning: Green. Like his shirt. Idk, society if Will had better characterization before he was booted.

Nick: Nicholas Gould

Meaning: He is not related to Dakota I don’t believe that. Anyways Gould like gold the previous metal, I don’t like Nick I don’t care if his last name is good society if Nick never existed.

Ashley: Ashley Hayes

Meaning: Graham is also good ig but Hayes like hay is funny to me.

Dan: Daniel Dressler

Meaning: Dressler is a common Ashkenazi surname that means to turn or spin, which I feel fits his habit of turning or changing who he voted with in most eliminations.

Drew: Andrew Leclair

Meaning: Leclair means bright light in French, which I feel fits since he illuminated Tom’s secret to Grett and since he clarifies himself in writing.

S2:

Aiden: Aiden Cadena

Meaning: Cadena is a Spanish-speaking surname that means chain. I picked it because he’s like, an e-boy. You could also get symbolic with it, like his fears chain him back? Idk

James: James Castelo-Domingos

Meaning: James’ Tik Tok handle in season two was JamesCDofficial so I figured his last initials were C & D. Castelo means someone who lives near a castle and Domingos comes from the word for Sunday or the lord’s day, and I figured those both hinted towards his massive online empire and him being the last person in the game in season two— the conqueror and the last one at the end.

Lake: Lake Müller

Meaning: This one’s been canon for years I’ve just accepted it already.

Ally: Allyson Valentine

Meaning: I feel like this is like a perfect online screen name, Allyson Valentine sounds like a real streamer name to me, but I mainly picked it after Jill Valentine. Like the Resident Evil character. She’s a gamer bro.

Hunter: Hunter Keyes

Meaning: I had a couple different ideas for Hunter’s surname, I wanted to go with Turing for famous codebreaker Alan Turing or Vigenére for the Vigenére cipher, but I felt like Keyes worked best when referring back to his interests in puzzles and his strategic skills, both because I think it goes better with his first name and because it has more Celtic origins since I headcanon him to be Scottish.

Tess: Teresa Hyun

Meaning: First of all, ONC can rip Korean Tess from my cold dead hands. But second of all I think Hyun works because depending on the hanja used to write it, it can mean dark/mysterious and worthy/virtuous, both of which fit Tess at different points in the series.

Maggy: Margaret O’Connor

Meaning: I honestly picked Maggy’s surname mostly for the sound and look; O’Connor allegedly means something along the lines of “hound of desire” or “lover or wolves”, which idk if you really stretch you could talk about how she desires companionship or how she’s been a lone wolf her whole life, something like that— but I just kind of thought it Worked more than anything. O’Connor is a pretty common Irish surname and I headcanon her to be Irish so that was also a factor in choosing it.

Kai: Kai Setiawan

Meaning: Setiawan is an Indonesian surname which means “loyal friend”, which I thought suited Kai since he’s loyal both to his friends (Maggy is a good example of this) and his beliefs.

Connor: Connor Boutella

Meaning: Boutella is an Italian surname that means “father of the hill”, which I feel suits him as the oldest member of the cast in season two and the leader of the heroes in later season three.

Karol: Karol Aguilar

Meaning: Karol is both a nature lover and a strong, conniving, and assertive antagonist, so I thought Aguilar (“haunt of eagles”) was a fitting surname for her.

Riya: Riya Varma

Meaning: First of all while I know his posts aren’t technically canon, I could’ve sworn Riya’s surname used to be Varma instead of Sharma in an old Ordartz post? So I kind of got attached to that. And second of all Varma just fits her better I think; the V sound is a lot sharper than the Sh sound which I like for her, and also Varma allegedly means “armor” while Sharma means something along the lines of “joy” or “bliss”, which I think suits her better since Riya is clearly a very armored person who’s afraid to be authentically kind since it’ll destroy her image.

Rosa María: Rosa María Amador Ortiz

Meaning: Rosa María is very loving and kind, and also very willing to stand up for her loved ones, so I figured Amador (“lover”) and Ortiz (“brave/strong”) fit her well.

Oliver: Oliver Bennett

Meaning: First of all idgaf about Oliver enough to find him a new surname but second of all I think Bennett is an ironic surname for him since it supposedly means “blessed one” and he was so unlucky in season two like all the time.

Yul: Yul Sunwoo

Meaning: This was another one that I picked mostly for the sound and look of the letters; I couldn’t find any reputable websites with a meaning for the name but it seems that every website I did find consistently insisted that Sunwoo had a positive connotation so I think it would be funny if that was Yul’s last name considering that he’s fucking terrible.

I saw on your twitter you live in SF, I just moved to Berkeley a couple months ago and was wondering if you could give me some recs in the area for bookstores and restaurants (sorry I know this isn’t related to fics or Pedro)

omg no please don’t apologize i love the Bay Area so much i’d love to give you recommendations!!

i know sf much better as i’ve lived here for like (oh god) 12 years, so most of my recommendations will be on this side of the bay—

bookstores:

- Green Apple Books (Inner Sunset & Inner Richmond) — the one in the Richmond is far larger, but both are amazing used bookstores with incredible selections. The one in the sunset has readings occasionally which is really cool.

- City Lights (North Beach) — perhaps one of the most famous bookstores in the country. they even have their own publishing company. literally three stories of books. the third floor is entirely poetry with a cute little reading nook.

- Dog Eared Books (Mission) — cozy bookstore on Valencia, they sell used and new books.

- Half Price Book (Downtown Berkeley) — omg this place is huge. it’s family owned and also sells music and movies. i once found a city lights beat poetry collection from the late 50’s here for like 15$

- Pegasus Books (Thousand Oaks, Berkeley) — huge selection of used and new books. they also do readings here occasionally.

BIZARRE WILDCARD OPTION: Bound Together Bookstore (Haight-Ashbury) — this place is weird af but worth at least one visit. they sell a lot of local zines which is cool, but also have a lot of conspiracy literature, anarchist and counterculture books.

Rooh (Mission Bay) — elevated Indian food. sooooo good. best naan i’ve ever had in my life.

Pancho Villa (Misson) — great, affordable Mexican food.

El Farolito (Mission) — best burritos in the city, don’t let anyone else tell you differently. it is cash only, though, so be prepared for that.

Panchita’s Pupuseria (Mission) — real Salvadoran pupusas. cheap and sooo fucking good.

Burma Superstar (Richmond) — incredible Burmese food. best tea leaf salad i’ve ever had in my life. good cocktails too, if you’re into that.

Chile Lindo Empanadas (Mission) — only real Chilean empanadas in the city. so incredibly good that they’re only open Thursday-Saturday and they sell out FAST.

Fiorella (Sunset & Richmond) — great Italian. the one in the Richmond has a larger menu and cocktails, but books up fast. sunset location is just as good, easy to get a table.

Greens (Marina) — INCREDIBLE vegan food. pretty expensive, but worth the buck as it is right on the bay and the food is divine even for those who don’t normally eat vegan. good place for a date or anniversary.

Thank you for your email.  Please accept this reply as a response to the concerns you raised with respect to the protection of Protected Health Information (PHI). 

Fiorella is committed to safeguarding our clients’ personally identifiable information (PII) and PHI, and has enacted robust controls to prevent the unauthorized use or disclosure of PHI and PII.  These controls include the issuance of numerous policies that govern our employees’ conduct and establish clear rules for protecting PHI and PII, comprehensive online and in person training, and state-of-the-art systems and tools to ensure that all PHI and PII is encrypted.

 

With respect to policies, the following expressly establish requirements and expectations with respect to handling PHI and PII:

• AssuredPartners Employee Handbook;

• Fiorella Code of Conduct; and

• Fiorella Privacy and Protecting PHI and PII Policy (Privacy Policy).

Each employee is required to execute an acknowledgement of these policies certifying that they have read and understand the policies.  The Privacy Policy defines terms and explains in plain language the restrictions on the use and disclosure of PHI and PII. 

Employees also are required to take online training that addresses proper handling of PHI and PII through SkillSoft’s learning management system, in addition to in person training provided by Fiorella’s management team.  Additionally, the Compliance team issues monthly compliance newsletters, which have reminded employees of their obligation to safeguard our clients’ PHI and PII.  The Compliance team is available as a resource should any agent have a question or concern.

 

In addition to the resources and compliance requirements imposed by Fiorella, each agent also has independent obligations by virtue of state licensing requirements and the Federally-facilitated Marketplace Agreement each agent must sign before he or she begins to sell plans.

swastamita 2023 part 1

this is a part 1 of a full review of swastamita 2023. a fashion show event that shows my senior in university their graduation collection.

nadya okvita putri titled fiorella. in this collection she gave us 3 clean n elegant dress with an embroidery of flowers. 5/10 its maybe too basic for my liking. it doesn't give me any feeling toward it n its not bad nor amazing.

syifa aurellia alfi k titled orchid muse. in this collection she gave us 3 clean n elegant dress with flowers made of fabric. 6/10 its more adventurous with how she made the clothes. I like the the design but it still doesn't really hit me. there's not really any emotion that hitting me.

still good but I want the art of it not just clothes.

alvina zalva titled shining sea of bunaken. now we cooking this one is a collection of soft blue dress with beads n drapery. 7.5/10 now this one catch my attention its braver then the last two n it looks more how do I put it, maybe like its more "finish". great collection.

raissa ayuni putri titled supata ayu. translated from javanese it's titled beautiful oath. honestly this is executed really really well the graphic of a folklore character this is muach chef kiss 8/10.

haudlatifa widjiantari titled kandita. another clothes looking clothes it feels really conservative. 6.5/10.

afra syahra nabilah a titled inong. this is modest fashion honestly I don't really like this side of fashion. because they are so big headed calling them self "the modest fashion". but this is a good collection it really nice to look at modern with a traditional taste in it. 7/10.

salza pradita utari titled anggrekalis. this one I love how the fabric flows and make a water drop shape. 7.5/10 another one that can be categorize as modest fashion.

sophia dewi anjani titled sweet heart. this one even tho a basic silhouette but the embroidery it goes crazy the fabric it glitters. 8/10 it's crazy.

dumanna titled poppy. I'm not crazy for its beading on the neck 5/10

muhammad firja fadilah s titled badjoe manten. now this is crazy amazing work uhhhh i love it so much. 8/10

anugrah rafid ghifari titled gelombang cahaya. this one also good. playing with asymmetry. 7/10.

ame julia meliala titled flavia. this look intricate but its so okay like there's nothing special from it. 7.5/10. after a few time a lot of it kinda look the same and it started to kinda make me like "ah here we go again".

asha fadillah andani titled gadang. there's nothing special to this don't get me wrong the beading is good but it's so empty n boring. 5/10.

denys nurhaliza titled lin diah. a traditional clothing. I could care less about traditional clothing. it's been done to death by the old people. like if u wanna do a traditional feel make it a bit modern this is so dead. I want something new I get it oh u want to keep tradition alive but cmon. don't get me wrong its good but its so old 5.5/10

silviliana laillatul m titled maha wira. this is just plain. 4/10.

lutfia nurazizah & shela rahayu hasannah djalinan serat. I love the pattern. it feels rich. it's giving old money. 7/10.

anisah dhiya azizah titled banuata. this one is fun it feels complete from the slit on the pants showing the inside lining the ruffle hand warmer the asymetric vest its all fun n looks good 7.5/10

What is a story?

A story is a depiction of a journey. In a story, we follow a character or a series of characters on a journey as they pursue something up against certain obstacles. (Travis et al., 2011)

What is a tale?

A narrative; a story. Commonly a slight or petty account of some trifling or fabulous incident: as, a tale of a tub. (What Does Tale Mean?, 2019)

What is science fiction?

"Science fiction is a time-sensitive subject in literature. Usually futuristic, science fiction speculates about alternative ways of life made possible by technological change, and hence has sometimes been called "speculative fiction." Like fantasy, and often associated with it, science fiction envisions alternative worlds with believably consistent rules and structures, set apart somehow from the ordinary or familiar world of our time and place. THE STORY

All that people wanted was to have a secure future for themselves, being selfish led them to serious consequences in the world, and eventually, everything went downhill. At this time, it was a cloudy afternoon when everything started. Nevertheless, it was the year 2080, I was 57 years old at the time, and firstly, I was doing my everyday morning routine when there was a crash outside my house. Subsequently, I went outside and found out that there was a very bright light and I approached it, turning out to be a weird celestial creature.

-Fiorella, you are the chosen one…- It talked with a very soothing voice. 

-What? What are you? What does that mean?- I asked exalted. 

-Means that you are the one who will help save humanity as it is. You will need to hurry up. We are running out of water. -Said taking my hand and opening it, putting some kind of paper in it. 

-What is this? Wha… What is going on?- I asked, stuttering my words.

-This is a map that is going to help you throughout your odyssey, there you will find where to encounter the prophecy mermaids due to them having the key element you will need to save humanity.- She said, and disappeared.

I went to see these prophecy mermaids that lived in a beautiful landscape, and they gave me some kind of mushrooms that I needed to ingest so that I could travel through time to end with this tragedy. Furthermore, they gave me four of them and warned me to use them wisely, the only condition was to ingest them while in a photo booth. I went to look for the closest photo booth and went in as quickly as I could. I believed I couldn’t give up on this journey, I couldn’t let humanity down. Consequently, I chose the year 2023, because that’s where I got along with Adrian and Victor, so I came across them and asked for help, explaining everything. Previously, they helped me spread the word through social media, and as a remembrance, I gave them one of my special cookies. I checked my clock and I was running out of time, so I returned to my actual era. Indeed, I could help save the world because of my actions, and it was like any of the terrible things we were going through happened in the first place. Last but not least, please help save the planet, every single little action counts.

Le origini del reggae in Italia sono da ricercare fuori dal genere, in una dimensione diversa dall'immaginario più conosciuto. Dal 1970, numerose sono le sperimentazioni, in cui i ritmi caraibici, uniti all'esperienza mediterranea, hanno prodotto qualcosa di molto particolare e unico. In questa selezione sono raccolti quattordici brani di straordinaria bellezza, per comprendere al meglio una delle musiche più amate.

Tengo moltissimo a questa ricerca a cui lavoro da diverso tempo e che adesso sono felice di far conoscere. Per realizzarla ho ascoltato tantissima musica, forse quasi tutta la discografia italiana pubblicata dal 1960 al 1990, dove non ci sono dei dischi completamente reggae.
