Thanks for the advice on au fic writing! I really appreciate it! Im currently working on an outline for the overall story and each chapter. It’s inspired by a movie so I’m trying to stay true to the movie (very angsty) while also adding my own spin on it with Joel and an original character. I hope to start posting chapters on here soon but again I really appreciate you taking the time to answer and offer advice!

it was really important for me-- in this fic in particular-- to shape joel as a dom in all aspects. a lot of the time (in some of my other fics as well) joel comes across as gruff and uninterested everywhere but the bedroom. that could not be the case in this fic, as Ophelia needs motive for leaving her husband, she needs someone to point out all the glaring disparities in her relationship.

because of that i think the kink hits different in this fic, because he's proving to her he can be the dominant one across all avenues of her life, not just in the bedroom.

anyway!! i'm excited to dive into it!

I am so grateful you're here and writing and sharing your work with us. Thank you, seriously. Fandom is an escape for me I probably rely on too much, but there are times where it's really made me wanna kms less lmao. I'm insane, I know. But whatevs life is hard! Especially so for me personally this past year. It feels like this fandom has all but disappeared and it sucks. With the exception of a few writers in their respective silos, certainly it seems the amount of writers has halved basically. I feel like this time last year there were like 30, even 40 blogs, I followed that were pretty engaged and sharing work and it felt like a community for the most part! Maybe I'm looking at it with rose colored glasses. People were excited for all the work PP had coming out this summer though, and at that time the new season of TLOU hadn't come out yet so there was still some excitement before opinions got super loud. Now it's like 3, maybe 4 blogs I know, that seem engaged. Yours included for which I truly am appreciative! I've seen other people say it and I get that it is true, things change and there's ebb and flow, but it makes me sad. If things just naturally fizzled out, that would be one thing. Why is the Internet so FUCKED!! Ugh.. okay. Sorry for the mini rant. I just really do love your work. Others have said it but your writing is a fucking masterclass in yearning and longing and it's so perfect. I'm so excited for the rest of this series and whatever else you have planned. THANK YOU!!

all fandom ebbs and flows, it's just the nature of the beast, but it is very sad that so many writers have been forced out because of drama and bullying. it's why i'll always preach to stay removed to a certain extent, but i only know that now because i have been the victim of bullying and drama in previous fandoms i belonged to. that being said, you're not insane for relying on fandom to get through tough times. that's what it's meant for!! an escape, a community of people with a shared interest.

i know that i do rely on writing as my escape, and i'm lucky enough to share that writing with you all, so don't worry, i'm not going anywhere anytime soon <33

I just discovered mercy for those seeking and I love everything about it so far. Effy’s personality, how she is around Joel and her sister. I was wondering if you could give any advice on how to write au fanfics for Joel and an original character? I am thinking about writing my own but I’ve never written for Joel or the characters in the tlou world. I prefer au’s and have an idea but I am sort of intimidated and overthink if it’ll even be interesting to read or post on here

yeah - happy to give some advice!

writing an AU is very similar to writing an original novel - that's not necessarily good advice for someone who may just be starting out, but here's what i mean by that.

there are thousands of different versions of all of us -- me, you, the barista down the street that you order your coffee from each morning. that rings true for fictional characters as well. we all think there's one version of joel or javi or whatever pp character you're writing about, but that's not true, characters are just as multi-faceted as real people. joel would not be the same person he's portrayed as in the game and the show if the outbreak never happened, or if he grew up in california instead of texas, or if he never became a father. there are so many avenues that can make up a person, that shape them. when you're writing an AU it's important to shape whatever character you're writing about with the original source material as well as whatever changes you want to make.

i've said this a thousand times, but it's especially true for an AU - you need to have an outline. figure out what it is you want to say, your plot points, draft a character map for every character even side ones. figure out their fears, their motivations, their backstory. sometimes after doing that the plot will completely reinvent itself.

as far as making something interesting - if you're interested in what you're writing, other people will be too. our creative endeavors are not supposed to appeal to every single person, but i do promise that if you find your story interesting, other people will be too.
