Bump in the Night — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
When the PattyCake guys were considering their options for Halloween of 2020, they had two options — acknowledge the reality that celebrations would be largely curtailed or cancelled entirely, or provide an escape to an alternate reality where everything was normal. In the end, leaning into the abnormality of the situation provided an opportunity to bring together some of their favorite antagonists from multiple spooky franchises, ranging from campy to creepy. And the song they wrote to serve as a soundtrack is downright catchy.
Details:
title: Bump in the Night – A Horror Musical (feat. Ghostface from Scream 5)
performers: Ben Brainard (Brad); Bailee Hebbler (Janet); Stevie Christofore (Jamie Lee); Layne Stein (Freddy Kreuger / Frankenstein / Gremlin); Jason Urbanski (Beetlejuice); James Keaton (Uncle Fester); Kyndall Dale (Cousin Itt / Samara); Erich Dale (Michael Myers / Ghostface / Jason Voorhees); Tony Wakim (Chucky / Dracula / Pennywise / featured vocals); Brianna Fogden (Bride of Frankenstein / dancer); Anna Ricks (Elvira / dancer); Cassandra Ariel (The Nun); Kimberly Zurzolo (Winifred Sanderson / dancer); Stephanie Trilli (Sarah Sanderson / dancer); Jaimz Dillman (Mary Sanderson / dancer); Sean Philliban (Jack Torrance); Shawn Ryan (Ghostface voice); Hannah Laird (Neve Prescott / dancer); Marcus Boyle, Christopher Villegas, Edward Cuellar, Joel Santiago, Chris Ross, Max Sjostrom, Sarah Ivory, Kendrick Pasley, Ronnie Stripling, & Allie Bath (dancers)
written & arranged by: Layne Stein & Tony Wakim
screenplay by: James Keaton & Tony Wakim
release date: 16 October 2020
My favorite bits:
the serious, cynical kid who's overly mature for her age
that fun, ultra-synthesized instrumentation that evokes the era but conveys that there's no real danger 🎹🥁
Brad's melodramatic teasing and Jamie Lee's exasperated retaliation, excellent sibling dynamics
the echo-y wail of ♫ "Don't you dare" ♫
the Sanderson sisters doing the stacked Scooby Gang emergence from the hedges
Jamie Lee getting actually annoyed by Brad putting his hands on her glasses (They get dirty enough on their own!)
the Vertigo zoom leading into…
monster dance break! 💃🕺👻🤡🤡🧟🕺💃
the ominous heartbeat percussion as they flee
adhering to the horror movie rule that being inside the house is safe, even if the barrier is transparent glass
the captions explicitly including the "Carrie-d away" pun
the 80s-tastic sponsorship integration and slasher-specific disclaimers

Trivia:
The overall aesthetic for this project was inspired by 80s and 90s slasher movies, with the dance break heavily influenced by Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video.
The style of the song is a combination of Dua Lipa and classic 80s pop, which is perfectly suited to Tony's natural timbre. (By his own admission, Ben's a comedian, not a singer.)
Tony had to do several recording passes for the vocals, singing incrementally worse each time, so that the auto-tune would create the over-modulated sound they wanted.
The PattyCake guys initially met Ben when the casting notice for their first Descendants project was overrun with recommendations for him to play Carlos.
Stevie had played Dani in the previous year's Halloween Hocus Pocus video, "Into the Night".
The teen characters are named after Brad Majors and Janet Weiss from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the younger sister for actor Jamie Lee Curtis who first rose to fame after starring in Halloween.
The reporter's name, Neve Prescott, is a combination of actress Neve Campbell and her character Sydney Prescott from the Scream franchise.
Jason was one of the BJ actors who Tony had worked with in the Beetlejuice Rock & Roll Graveyard Revue show at Universal Studios, and was happy to put on the striped suit again.
James was another long-running Beetlejuice, and is also a huge Addams Family fan who was thrilled to play Uncle Fester.
Erich had previously portrayed Captain America in the "Avengers: Thunder" video. The proliferation of physically imposing dudes with masks in the slasher genre allowed him to do triple duty here.
Brianna, Anna, and Cassandra are regular cast members and swing performers for PattyCake's various ongoing projects, particularly the Villains Lair and Princess Academy series.
The guys did approach Geoff and Kathy Castellucci to reprise their Beetlejuice Revue roles as Frankie and the Bride for a more complete reunion, but they were out of town during filming. 😞
Kimberly, Stephanie, and Jaimz are all reprising their roles as the Sanderson sisters from previous Hocus Pocus projects.
Hannah often provides vocals and background acting for PattyCake projects, but this is one her few prominent onscreen appearances.
The outdoor scenes were filmed in Layne's childhood neighborhood, "borrowing" electricity from the neighbors. In order for the video to be finished in time for Halloween, that filming had to happen in the middle of summer. Needless to say, the residents who weren't in the know were quite confused by the hoard of movie monsters shambling down their street.
The dance break was choreographed by Lindsey Galvin Todd, who the guys had known since their theme park days, and had worked with on their videos for grown-up girl group 4Eva29.
Three of the dancers — Marcus, Christopher, and and Ronnie — returned four years later as some of Captain Hook's pirates in the second season of the Villains Lair to help remind Hans that "Life's Not Fair".
The incredible prosthetic monster makeup was applied by Rick Underwood, as usual.
PattyCake posted the song portion without the opening and closing scenes on TikTok for Halloween 2023.
Layne and Tony also did a full behind-the-scenes commentary for the video's third anniversary.

My 20 Most Anticipated Films of 2025!!
As always, these are a far from definitive, quickly thrown together sampling of films I'm looking forward to. There's definitely a bunch I'm missing, here, but I honestly didn't feel like doing any extensive search. These are just the ones already on the 2025 calendar that stuck out to me when browsing through. One that's not here because there's no release date yet—but stands as probably my most anticipated film of 2025, period—is Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. Enjoy!
Wolf Man (Leigh Whannel) - 1.17.25 I've been digging the trailers that have been shown before every movie for the past few months, and really dug the approach to The Invisible Man, so hopefully this one delivers.
Presence (Steven Soderbergh) - 1.24.25 No clue what this is about, but Soderbergh is always at the very least interesting. So, yeah...
Companion (Drew Hancock) - 1.31.25 The trailer's been playing a ton, and I am intrigued.
Captain America: Brave New World (Julius Onah) - 2.14.25 Oh, c'mon... have we met?!?
Mickey 17 (Bong Joon-ho) - 3.7.25 Bong Joon-ho + Robert Pattinson + Edward Ashton's book being a blast = This film making my list for the second year in a row.
Black Bag (Steven Soderbergh) - 3.14.25 Another Soderbergh that I know nothing about... ::shrugs::
Sinners (Ryan Coogler) - 4.18.25 Hailee Steinfeld being involved has this on here more than anything else. Coogler's solid, though, even if I'm still not sold on Michael B. Jordan.
Thunderbolts* (Jake Schreier) - 5.2.25 Flo. That's all... just Flo.
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (Christopher McQuarrie) - 5.23.25 The last bona fide movie star's last Mission. Can't wait!
The Life of Chuck (Mike Flanagan) - 5.30.25 Flanagan does King... again. I absolutely loved this novella, and I can't wait to see how Flanagan & Crew bring it to life.
Ballerina (Len Wiseman) - 6.6.25 I would've much rather have gotten a Paloma film, but I'll take my badass Ana de Armas anyway I can get her.
28 Years Later (Danny Boyle) - 6.20.25 Meh... I like zombies and Boyle and enjoyed the first two well enough (even if Days is grossly overrated these days).
Superman (James Gunn) - 7.11.25 Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is more than enough to have me pumped for Gunn's take on Supe, but then there's everything else in that trailer, on top of her. Damn.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Matt Shakman) - 7.25.25 Solid casting, and I'm just really excited to see where their introduction into the MCU takes the MCU as a whole.
Untitled PTA Film (Paul Thomas Anderson) - 8.8.25 I know nothing about this... but it's PTA. So, duh...
The Bride (Maggie Gyllenhaal) - 9.26.25 Ambitious take on a classic and a holy shit cast. Yes, please.
Tron: Ares (Joachim Rønning) - 10.10.25 Loved Tron: Legacy so damn much.
The Running Man (Edgar Wright) - 11.7.25 Wright does King... Hell. F*cking. Yes.
Bugonia (Yorgos Lanthimos) - 11.7.25 More Emma Stone/Yorgos Lanthimos weirdness?!? Gimme, gimme gimme.
Predator: Badlands (Dan Trachtenberg) - 11.7.25 Haaaaave y'all seen Prey?!?
There they are!
As for My Best of 2024, once again all of the major lists will not be getting posted until late-January/early-February, but I’m going to try to get some of the early lists – such as Posters & TV – sorted and posted over the next week or two. Please Feel Free to Follow Along So You Don’t Miss Anything!
Stay Tuned!
-Timothy Patrick Boyer.
