Elise Kova’s latest book in the Married to Magic series is fang-tastic!

“A Duel with the Vampire Lord” centers around Floriane, a forge maiden who is kidnapped by her worst enemy—the vampire lord Ruvan. In order to survive, she becomes his blood sworn. But the longer Floriane stays at Castle Tempost, the more she realizes that the vampires are not the monsters she thought they were.

Floriane is a strong female protagonist and compelling character. She finds great joy working beside her mother as a blacksmith. As someone who is not familiar with this line of work, I loved learning about how metal is forged into weapons and how much strain the body goes through during this process. To accurately portray smithing, Kova worked with an iron artist to make her own dagger, which makes this book extra special!

Due to the long hours Floriane spends in the smithy, she has an “untraditional” figure—one that is curvy and stout. The way she is described made me love her all the more because Floriane provides representation of women of different body types to readers.

Though she is self-conscious about her appearance at the beginning of the novel, comparing herself to other women in the town, those feelings go away the moment she realizes that Ruvan burns for her. Of the three books in the series, “A Duel with the Vampire Lord” has the best relationship development. Ruvan and Floriane naturally start off as enemies, but they are forced to put their differences aside in order to break the curse plaguing Ruvan’s people. Their attraction for each other heightens the more time they spend with each other until it reaches a fever pitch (arguably Kova’s spiciest scene to date). I absolutely love Ruvan and Floriane’s chemistry and the sacrifices that they made each other towards the end of the novel truly made me feel things.

Another aspect of the novel I appreciated is how Kova was able to create something new about vampires. In her world, blood is used to enhance magic rather than quench thirst. Their blood based magic system is both complex and unique, informing the reader of the vampire’s customs and abilities.

In past books, a majority of the time is spent in Midscape (Kova’s magical land). Kova switches it up in this novel, dividing the protagonist’s time between Midscape and Hunter’s Hamlet, Floriane’s home in the Natural World. I enjoyed getting the opportunity to learn about the social structure of Hunter’s Hamlet (complete with a Master Hunter, Hunters, a Forge Maiden, and farmers) while still being able to venture into the Vampir mountains.

I cannot wait to continue on in the Married to Magic series with “A Duet with the Siren Duke” next year! Fingers crossed that Ruvan and Floriane make a cameo!

1.unseelie , it’s part of a duology and I loved 🥰 that it was written by an autistic author ✍️ ivelisse housman and featured an enemies to lovers between raze and unseelie and found family and an autistic Fae protagonist as I’m autistic and it’s a fantastic book 📖.

2. the secret 🤫 of service of tea and treason by India 🇮🇳 holton , a autistic author ✍️ and it is part of a trilogy about autistic witches , spies 🕵️‍♀️ and witches in a magical 🧙‍♀️ Victorian world 🌎 and has an enemies to lovers romance 🥰 between Alice and Daniel and it’s an phenomenal book 📖.

3. a duel with the vampire 🧛‍♀️ lord by Elise kova and it is amazing 🤩 book 📖 with the found family trope and an enemies to lovers romance 🥰 between Floriane and Ruvan and it’s an amazing 🤩 book 📖 and a retelling of snow ❄️ white.

4. a taste 👅 of poison ☠️ by tessonja odette is an excellent book 📖 and a wonderful book 📖 featuring Fae in a beautiful 🤩 magical 🧙‍♀️ Victorian inspired world 🌎.

5. court of dragons 🐉 by frost Kay and it’s an epic fantasy romance 🥰 and it’s part of a trilogy and has dragons 🐉, romance 🥰 and elves 🧝‍♀️ and badass ladies .

6. Midnight 🕛 in everwood by m.a kuzniar and it is a wonderful retelling of the nutcracker and has an rivals to lovers story, and LBTQ representation as well as many other representations and relationships as well .

7. A throne of shadows by tessonja odette and it’s part of a trilogy and has unicorns 🦄 and magic and Fae and second chance and enemies to lovers romances respectively between the two different characters, Cora and teryn and larylis and mareleau.

8. These vengeful souls by Kelly Zekas and Tarum shanker and has an LBTQ relationship with the main relationship being enemies to lovers and has villains 🦹‍♀️ and heroes 🦸‍♀️ living in Victorian times and I’m a history buff 💪 and it’s x men meets the Victorian era. It also reminds me of the heroine complex series by Sarah Kuhn and the renegades trilogy by marissa Meyer as well as my favorite 🤩 shows titans and doom patrol and x men evolution.

9. Ana Maria and the fox 🦊 by Liana de la Rosa is a historical romance 🥰 set in the Victorian era in England and has a slow burn 🔥 romance 🥰 between a Mexican heiress Ana Maria who is the sunshine ☀️ to the grumpy African politician, Gideon fox as well and a marriage of convenience and Ana Maria and Gideon’s relationship is amazing 🤩 and I love ❤️ how he knows to speak 🗣️ Spanish and can talk to her and her family in their native language and I’m so excited 😆 to read the next book 📖 in the luna sisters trilogy next year as well as India 🇮🇳 holton and Elise kova and tessonja odettes books 📚 too etc.

10. the moonfire bride 👰‍♀️ by Sylvia Mercedes has Fae , slow burn 🔥romance and combines beauty and the beast with the Greek myth of Eros and psyche and it’s so good 😊 and the protagonist is a seamstress and she can weave dresses �� out of moonlight and other things in the Fae world 🌎.

11. Bellegarde by Jamie lilac it’s a retelling of the movie 🍿 she’s all that in 18th century France 🇫🇷 and has two slowburn romances between evie and beau and evie’s best friend Josephine and beau’s cousin , Mia Bellegarde and I love 💕 these two couples and the book 📖 is very well written and phenomenal and it’s awesome 😎.

12. Daughter of the pirate 🏴‍☠️ king 🤴 by Tricia levenseller has an abundance of magic 🪄, sirens 🚨, pirates 🏴‍☠️ and a heart ❤️ pounding enemies to lovers romance 🥰 between riden and alosa and it’s a stellar book 📖 .

13. Queen bee by Amalie Howard is a retelling of the count of monte Cristo by Alexander dumas and takes place in the regency era and has an array of different romances from enemies to lovers and slow burn 🔥 and friends to lovers and LBTQ relationships and representation from the many biracial characters in the book 📖 and it’s a fantastic book 📖

★ How was your reading this month? Did you discover any new favorites? I didn’t read as much as I typically do this month, and didn’t get to all of the books I wanted to, but that’s okay! Tomorrow I start my first day of grad school (MFA candidate, woot woot) and my first day teaching college English, so my month has been pretty devoted to that! I’m nervous, ready to get started, and looking forward to what the future brings. The one book at the top of my September reading list is @elise.kova’s A Duel with the Vampire Lord, the third book in Elise’s Married to Magic series! It just released a couple of weeks ago, and has been one of my most anticipated releases of the year. I love this series and am excited to continue in the world! But when her brother's in danger, she'll take up a silver sickle against the Vampire Lord himself. In Floriane, Ruvan sees a potential end to the centuries-long curse that's plagued his people. Hunters, vampires, an ancient curse, a blood oath, and a forbidden romance come together in this gorgeous darkly re-imagined Snow White meets Beauty and the Beast. Floraine is a forge maiden for the Hunter’s Hamlet, she was raised to make weapons for the hunters to hunt vampires, and her entire life has been spent listening to the wills of others and having no choice of her own, not even in who she can marry. Her only solace is her family, her mother who was a forge maiden before her and her brother who is a Hunter. But on the night of a blood moon she sees her brother dying at the hands of the Vampire Lord Ruvan and decides to do whatever it takes to protect her home... even taking a forbidden elixir and going head on with the vampire lord. However, Ruvan doesn’t want to kill her in fact he wants her. He kidnaps her and brings her back to the vampire castle and he explains his true motives: he needs a human’s help in breaking the curse placed on him and his people...a cursed they believe to have been placed on them by the hunters. Ruvan and Floraine make a bloodsworn oath: she will help break the curse and not harm him or those loyal to him and he will not harm her or even come back to the Hamlet in exchange. The more time she spends with Ruvan the more she begins to question the line between hatred and love and what is the truth and what is a lie. This was the perfect blend of enemies to lovers with slow burn romance and high stakes quest. Ruvan and Floraine have to honestly question their entire histories and beliefs of what they know, and face new emotions and feelings, they have to find the bond that is deeper than blood and truly see one another for who they are. Ruvan was honestly so swoon worthy, he’s kind, supportive, patient, and my all time favorite thing: CONSENT. He is constantly checking in on Floraine and asking her if she is okay with things and that is just perfection to me. So yes, this is definitely one of my favorites from the series ( though it can be read as a standalone but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL THE BOOKS) and I can’t wait to see what book Elise Kova writes next in this series!

Reading Update and minor writing update

Greetings all!

Rest assured I am alive. Just came here to give some updates.

Not sure if anyone's noticed but I am a huge Elise Kova fan, I have read her entire back list. Last August she released book 3 of her Married to Magic Series, A Deal with the Vampire Lord.

This might just be my favorite book in the series. I found that I liked the plot and characters more than the first two books. I liked Floriane but in the earlier part of the book, when Ruvan first brings her to Midscape, it felt like it took her forever to accept that vampir had their own issues the entire time her own people had the vampir problem. As for Ruvan, he’s probably my favorite among the male leads in this series. He felt more complex compared to the Eldas and Davien, especially regarding his motivations in breaking the curse. In terms of romance, I consider it to be on par with book 2. I like it when they’re together and I think this is more on the Upper YA side. The blood sharing is hot, more than the steamy scenes in my opinion. 

I really enjoyed this book and I’m very excited to see what happens in the next book. 

I am currently reading,or rather re-reading, Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent, I've gotten a few discord friends on board and watching the emotional damage has been entertaining.

As for writer's side of things, I'm still in the midst of writing my new WIP, I'm on chapter 3 right now and once I have a decent amount of chapters I will begin posting. I'm also trying to get back into writing those monthly shorts I do except I'll try to make it less of a monthly thing and instead make it shorter but more frequent, I'm still figuring it out.
